Reborn in America, I'm serious about making money.
Chapter 31 Living Next Door to a Boss
Having earned so much money, Zhang San has to pay taxes here in Sing Tao and again when he returns to the United States; however, he doesn't want to pay taxes, and he doesn't want to take this money back to North America.
He needed to find a place where his money could appreciate and be preserved. He suddenly thought of Hong Kong, a place with one of the highest returns in the world, with an annual return of up to 19%. That was Hong Kong. Zhang San decided to invest his money in Hong Kong's real estate and stock markets.
He doesn't need to conduct in-depth and detailed research to know about stocks with great potential; this is the benefit of being reborn. As long as you have a general idea, and then find a good trader, you can work backwards.
Now that I've been reborn, I'll make money in the easiest way possible. If I'm still struggling to earn money, what's the point of transmigrating and being reborn? Isn't it just about taking shortcuts?
Since there's a shortcut, Zhang San doesn't want to be foolish and take the long way around; he doesn't want to spend all his time making money.
Zhang San assembled two teams, one based in Sing Tao and the other in Hong Kong, through recommendations from headhunters and Morgan Stanley. The two teams were unrelated and independent of each other.
After arriving in Hong Kong, Zhang San bought the remaining part of the Wantong Building for HK$2.6 million; the other part was owned by Liu, a famous and wealthy man in Hong Kong, who was even more powerful than the protagonist of a novel; from then on, he became neighbors with such a big shot.
According to the original owner, the other half was bought by Mr. Liu in 1987 for HK$160 million, while Zhang San paid more than HK$100 million more for the remaining part, and he felt he got a good deal.
When Zhang San bought it, it surprised Boss Liu, who had received the news. He was prepared to buy the rest, but unexpectedly, someone beat him to it.
"Boss, there's a Mr. Liu who says he's your neighbor and wants to visit you."
Zhang San immediately grasped the key words: surname Liu and neighbor. When these two words are combined, isn't that the other half of the Liu family?
The visitor was indeed Boss Liu, a former sniper expert, a legendary figure, and also a female celebrity sniper. He came out of curiosity about who had bought the building he had his eye on, which made him condescend to come and see which formidable person it was, and also to give them a warning.
"Please let him in."
Zhang San was in his office, and he asked his assistant to invite someone in. He didn't get up, even though he was worth less than 20 billion US dollars. In Hong Kong, he should be considered a big shot, right?
The door opened, and a kind-looking man, followed by four bodyguards, walked in. He noticed that the young man sitting there was processing documents. Hearing the door open, he looked up at the group of people who had entered.
He stood up with a smile and said, "Mr. Liu? Please sit down. Quickly, serve Mr. Liu some tea."
Zhang San's smile was quite approachable; however, after Boss Liu came in, he looked around first and ignored Zhang San's friendliness. But after seeing the large photo behind the desk, he suddenly became enthusiastic.
Those were photos of him posing with a group of people, with him standing in the middle, surrounded by a group of foreigners, and the NT-MS logo in the background.
Another photo shows MCA posing with a group of Westerners, with him standing in the middle and surrounded by them.
These two photos show his most glorious acquisitions; as for Pixar and Marvel Comics, he hasn't acquired them yet.
"May I ask your surname, young friend?"
Zhang San could see through the man's initial arrogance followed by obsequiousness, but he didn't care. When asked, he didn't hide anything and said, "My surname is Zhang."
This surname is so elegant that there's no need to say "no need for formalities"; this made Zhang San very proud, though no one really knew what he was so proud of.
"Mr. Zhang, aren't you from Hong Kong?"
"I was from mainland China before last year, then I immigrated to North America and now I run a small business."
The fact that the two could communicate in Mandarin shows that the other person is very fluent in Mandarin; no wonder they were able to invest in mainland China in the mid-to-late 1980s, their Mandarin is really impressive.
"Mr. Zhang, what kind of business do you do? If we have any overlap, we can cooperate."
This was a test of his limits. Zhang San smiled knowingly and said, "Did you see that photo? The one under NT-MS."
"I know about MS, but I don't know about NT-MS."
"I am a shareholder of NT-MS. After MS was acquired by NT, the two companies merged to become NT-MS, which has now been relisted in North America."
Zhang San spoke casually, then pointed to the portrait beside him and said, "That's MCA, it's mine."
Although I don't know about MCA, I'll find out by asking around when I get back.
"I never expected Mr. Zhang to be so accomplished at such a young age. My apologies for not being more discerning. It is truly a great honor to be his neighbor."
The conversation between the two then went very smoothly, and both host and guest enjoyed themselves immensely; being able to chat and laugh with such a powerful figure was truly enviable.
Finally, Zhang San asked directly, "Mr. Liu, I'd like to buy that property next door. Would you be willing to part with it?"
Holy crap! This young upstart actually dares to spout nonsense, wanting to buy my share of the property. Does he really think he's rich? I'm already being lenient by not buying your share, now he wants to acquire the property I own. Does he really think he's something special? The older you get, the more timid you become.
"This is also a property I like..."
Since the other party didn't want to sell, Zhang San naturally wouldn't force them. His current team all works here, and the remaining space is naturally rented out.
After seeing Boss Liu off, Zhang San went back to his business. He was now preparing to acquire Hang Seng Index constituent stocks; the Hang Seng Index was going to rise, and rise a lot, so it was naturally the best investment option.
Like many Southeast Asian countries, Hong Kong operates on a fixed exchange rate, where one US dollar can be exchanged for 7.8 Hong Kong dollars.
Zhang San exchanged US$2 billion for HK$156 billion, leaving him with HK$153.4 billion. He used HK$340 million as working capital for the company, and invested the remaining HK$15 billion in the Hong Kong stock market.
The team that came from Wall Street this time is indeed a capable team. Although it took them a lot of time to complete the position building, this is also related to the current situation in Hong Kong.
In 1990, the daily turnover was less than HK$2 billion. If it had been like the later A-shares, with a daily turnover of HK$200 billion, HK$300 billion, HK$400 billion, or even HK$500 billion.
They shouldn't have taken this long to complete their position building.
However, in 1990, the Hang Seng Index did not rise much, and the daily turnover of the Stock Exchange was less than 30 million.
The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (HKEX) was formed in 1986 through the merger of four exchanges; the new exchange introduced stock index futures.
