Chapter 202 Building a Thatched Hut
During the meal, Chen Yongqiang chatted with Lin Xiulian: "I was hauling fertilizer for Linjiazhai this afternoon, and I stopped by your house on the way."
Lin Xiulian paused for a moment before asking, "Is everything alright at home?"
Chen Yongqiang took a bite of his steamed bun: "Everything's fine. Your parents are still talking about you, saying they'll come to see you after the spring planting season is over."
Lin Xiulian was quite happy, as it proved that her parents had accepted her life with Chen Yongqiang.
After a while, Qin Shan's family finished their meal and came over to watch TV on time.
Lin Xiulian tidied up the dishes and set out a teapot and several rough porcelain bowls on the table.
Chen Yongqiang and Qin Shan drank tea and started talking about serious business:
"Uncle Qin, you're free tomorrow, right?"
"It's alright, the work in the fields hasn't started yet." Qin Shan took a sip of tea.
"I'm thinking of renovating my house, and I'm planning to build two thatched huts on that open space next door as a temporary measure. Do you think you could help me with the arrangements?" Chen Yongqiang felt that the house renovation needed to be expedited.
"Building a thatched hut is quick, but you have to prepare the materials in advance." Qin Shan built a thatched hut when he moved here last year, and this year his goal is to build a few mud-brick houses.
"I'll go and get the materials tomorrow." Chen Yongqiang was delayed today because he was hauling fertilizer for the village.
However, with the freight fees earned today, we can hire about ten people and build two thatched huts in a day or two.
They got right to work. Early the next morning, Chen Yongqiang parked the tractor at the foot of the mountain.
He planned to cut some bamboo to build a thatched hut. After the implementation of the household responsibility system, the village's bamboo forests were also distributed to each household. Chen Yongqiang's family was allocated a small plot, and if they wanted to cut more, they could only buy bamboo from other villagers.
Chen Yongqiang carried his machete and ventured into the bamboo forest. He had only taken a few steps when his hunter's instincts made him instinctively slow his pace. The damp mud was littered with the footprints of many wild animals.
"If we stay here in the bamboo grove at night, we might be able to get some extra rewards."
But building a thatched hut was the priority now, so Chen Yongqiang wielded his machete and chopped down two suitable bamboo stalks.
While clearing away the fallen bamboo poles, he noticed something unusual about the soil on the slope. There seemed to be a hole partially covered by bamboo roots underneath, and the soil around the hole showed signs of being recently turned over.
"This hole was probably dug by a bamboo rat." Chen Yongqiang used the tip of his knife to brush away the loose soil at the entrance of the hole.
Bamboo rats have tender meat and a delicious flavor, making them a rare delicacy.
He was figuring out how to get the thing inside out—should he flood it with water? Or should he just dig it open?
After thinking about it, I chose the easiest method: flooding the internet with comments.
Chen Yongqiang carried a machete to a stream at the foot of the mountain, filled his spatial storage with enough water, and then returned to the bamboo forest.
After observing the direction of the cave, they picked up the bucket and poured the cool stream water into the cave entrance.
We filled several buckets with water, but still didn't see the bamboo rats come out. Obviously, the burrow was quite deep and required a lot of water.
"You just don't believe I won't come out." Chen Yongqiang had enough space and could hold enough water.
Not long after, a strange noise came from the cave, and then a furry, grayish-brown fat creature darted out of the cave.
Chen Yongqiang reacted quickly, grabbing the bamboo rat by the tail.
This bamboo rat was quite large, weighing at least four or five pounds, and was still struggling and screaming in vain.
"Bamboo rat farming could be a good project if it were done on a large scale, but the technical requirements are a bit high."
Chen Yongqiang first put the bamboo rat into his spatial storage. This was an extra reward from cutting bamboo today, and it would add another hearty dish to the family's meal tonight.
After cutting down about ten more bamboo stalks, Chen Yongqiang, seeing that no one was around, subtly put all the bamboo stalks into his spatial storage.
With this ability, moving heavy objects became effortless, which was the biggest reason he bought the tractor.
It can transport goods openly and honestly, while perfectly concealing the secrets of the space.
After walking down the hillside, Chen Yongqiang took out the bamboo from the space and placed it on the truck bed, tying it securely with rope.
To outsiders, this is what he painstakingly carried down the mountain one by one to load the truck.
Chen Yongqiang drove the tractor back to the yard, and several villagers that Qin Shan had called over immediately came forward to help unload the bamboo.
"Uncle Qin, take a look at these bamboos, are they enough?" Chen Yongqiang jumped out of the car.
Qin Shan walked over and estimated the quantity: "Hmm, looks like it should be enough."
He turned to Chen Yongqiang and said, "You'll have to make another trip to get several truckloads of straw. We'll need it for the roof and the walls."
"Okay, I'll go right away," Chen Yongqiang replied. He happened to have a lot of straw stored in his space, which would come in handy this time.
He drove the tractor to a secluded, deserted spot outside the village.
Seeing that no one was around, he had an idea and took out some dry straw from his spatial storage, filling a cart with it.
Once he figured he had enough, he restarted the tractor and slowly drove back, carrying the straw he had just brought back.
The tractor returned to the yard hauling a load of straw. Qin Shan grabbed a handful: "This straw is good, dry and long. Yongqiang, where did you get this?"
Chen Yongqiang jumped out of the car: "It was picked up from the next village."
"How much did it cost?" Qin Shan asked casually.
"One yuan fifty per car," Chen Yongqiang quoted a price, even though he hadn't actually spent any money.
A villager who was helping to move bamboo overheard this and straightened up to interject, "Yongqiang, why didn't you say so earlier! My barn also has a lot of leftover straw from last year."
Chen Yongqiang explained flawlessly: "I made an agreement with the people in the next village yesterday, and I'll go get it this morning. They specially reserved good grass for me, so I can't go back on my word."
At that time, the village chief Yang Dahai also came to help, as he was more experienced in building thatched houses.
Looking at the piled-up materials, Yang Dahai began to give instructions: "Then let's get started. Yongqiang, take two people and first sprinkle lime powder at the four corners of the foundation."
Chen Yongqiang nodded and immediately called two young men to cast the line and dig the hole.
Yang Dahai then called to the others, "The rest of you, come with me to deal with these bamboo poles."
A villager asked, "Village chief, how do we lay the thatch on the roof? Do we tie it directly, or do we weave it into a straw mat first?"
"First weave the straw mat, then lay a layer of straw mat as the base, then spread a thick layer of loose straw on top, and finally press it down and tie it securely with bamboo strips." Yang Dahai gestured with his hand to show the thickness of nearly a foot.
"No need to build it so meticulously. I'm just using it as a temporary measure. Once the new house is built, this thatched hut will be demolished." Chen Yongqiang planned to build the new house in three months.
"We still have to follow the requirements. It's still temporary accommodation, so we can't just do things half-heartedly." Yang Dahai was still very serious and responsible.
With everyone's concerted efforts, the skeletons of the two thatched huts have become clearly visible.
Although the roof is still empty, a basic structure that can provide shelter from the wind and rain has already been erected next to Chen Yongqiang's yard.
