Chapter 60 The Domineering CEO Falls in Love with the Old and Frail Me
As soon as Qiu Yingying stepped into her home, she was so startled by the "moving flower bed" in the center of the living room that she almost dropped her suitcase on the ground.
Grandma sat upright in the center of the sofa, wearing a bright pink satin cotton-padded jacket over a peacock blue cardigan. Her gold necklace was as thick as a dog leash, and she wore seven or eight rings on her fingers—gold, jade, and rhinestone-encrusted. [One of the gold rings was a gift from Qiu Yingying's parents; the others weren't genuine.] Under the light, she shone like a Christmas tree. Her hair was permed into ramen-noodle curls, smeared with half a pound of hairspray; even a fly would need a cane to land on it. Her foundation was so thick you could scrape it off and use it to make dumplings, her eyebrows were drawn like two caterpillars, and her lipstick looked like she'd just finished eating raw meat.
"Yingying's back!" Grandma's eyes lit up, and she jumped up. Her movements were more agile than seventy-three, more like seventeen.
Qiu Yingying's parents exchanged a glance, their eyes clearly saying: Oh no, the old lady is up to her old tricks again.
"Mom, what brings you here?" Qiu Yingying's father asked cautiously, his tone as if he were facing a supervisor inspecting the sanitation.
Grandma glanced at him, her disdainful look like she was looking at a wad of toothpaste that hadn't been squeezed out completely: "Why can't I come? I have an 'important appointment' right now!"
"An important date?" Qiu Yingying and her parents asked in unison, as if they had been told to repeat themselves.
Grandma puffed out her chest and said mysteriously, "You'll find out soon enough. And don't laugh when I tell you—"
She cleared her throat, instantly switching to the tone of a domineering female lead in a TV drama, so affectionate it could give you goosebumps:
"Yingying, do you know? Love knows no age! So what if you're seventy-three? You can have a passionate love even at seventy-three!"
Qiu Yingying's lips twitched, and her parents' faces turned green.
Grandma remained engrossed in her own Mary Sue world, pacing back and forth with her hands behind her back, her tone so cringeworthy it could make anyone cringe out of a three-bedroom apartment:
"He's a romantic and domineering CEO in the used car world! He conquered my aging and beauty-loving heart with a little tricycle! He said he'd take me to see all the wonders of the world and make me the happiest old lady in the world!"
She stopped abruptly, covered her face with her hands, and acted coy like a young girl experiencing her first love, her voice as soft as a mosquito's buzz:
"Oh dear, it's a bit embarrassing to admit. He even gave me a silk scarf, saying that I looked like an eighteen-year-old girl when I wore it."
Looking at her grandmother's appearance, Qiu Yingying had only one thought in her mind: This old lady must have been poisoned by some kind of "domineering CEO" drug.
Qiu Yingying's mother couldn't help but ask, "Mom, who did you learn this from? These words... why do they sound so familiar?"
Grandma immediately straightened her back and said proudly, "Of course I learned it from TV! You think I'm too old to be romantic? Let me tell you, I'm a 'senior Mary Sue' now, enjoying my second spring!"
Qiu Yingying's father rubbed his temples, looking troubled: "Then... who is this 'domineering CEO'? Tell us, so we can be at ease."
Grandma smiled mysteriously: "His surname is Wang, and his name is Wang Fugui! Doesn't the name itself sound wealthy? His son sells used cars, and he himself used to be a boss, owning a big company! Although he's retired now, his charm hasn't diminished at all!"
She paused, then began to mimic the domineering CEO's tone: "He said, 'Woman, you've successfully caught my attention.' I said, 'CEO, the back seat of your little tricycle is my greatest longing in this life.'"
"Pfft—" Qiu Yingying couldn't help but burst out laughing, almost spraying a mouthful of water onto the sofa.
Qiu Yingying's father quickly coughed twice, pretending to be serious, but his shoulders were shaking like they were powered by a motor. Qiu Yingying's mother covered her mouth, almost laughing to tears.
Grandma glared at them, displeased. "What are you laughing at! I'm telling you, he and I are serious! He said he'd take me for a drive in his little tricycle, to watch the sunset, to find our poetry and distant horizons!"
Just then, a "beep beep beep" sound came from outside, like a tractor in heat.
Grandma's eyes lit up, and she instantly came to life, as if a start button had been pressed: "He's here! He's here to pick me up!"
As she shouted, she rushed out, not forgetting to turn back and wave to Qiu Yingying's family: "I'm leaving! You guys stay home and wait for me to come back and tell you our romantic story!"
When Qiu Yingying's family arrived at the door, they saw a small tricycle parked there. A string of colorful lights hung in the cargo bed, flashing like a karaoke room. An elderly man with gray hair but a sprightly demeanor sat in the driver's seat, wearing sunglasses, a floral shirt, and a large gold chain around his neck, smiling at his grandmother.
Grandma ran over like a happy old hen, took the old man's arm, and said sweetly, "Mr. Domineering, you've come."
The old man chuckled, patted her hand, and said in a loud voice, "Come on, my little princess, let's go for a drive!"
The little tricycle sped away, its exhaust fumes carrying a romantic scent.
Watching Qiu Yingying's departing figure, her father sighed deeply, "Oh well, as long as she's happy."
Qiu Yingying's mother nodded, laughing so hard she could hardly stand up straight: "Yes, I never thought that at my age, I could meet such a 'romantic domineering CEO'."
Qiu Yingying watched the tricycle drive further and further away and couldn't help but smile.
Perhaps Grandma's love story seems a bit absurd, but who can say that it wasn't her happiness?
Her grandfather died young, and her grandmother began her belated rebellion. At least now she laughs like an eighteen-year-old girl—even though her makeup makes her look like a thirty-eight-year-old witch.
Qiu Yingying stood at the door, watching the tricycle chug away and disappear at the end of the alley. The string of colorful lights swayed back and forth in the night like an earthworm trying to escape.
She suddenly shivered, as if some mysterious force had struck the top of her head.
"I knew it..." she muttered to herself, her voice filled with a shocked realization. "My parents are both honest and simple, both of them are very upright. How come I seem to be under a spell as soon as I start dating?"
She slapped her thigh suddenly, her eyes shining with the light of "the case is solved".
"So that's where the roots are!"
