America: The Cremator
25. Advance into the blockade zone!
The three quickly dressed, and Stella was the first to open the door and rush out of the room.
Stella glanced at the black Wrangler parked in the rain, then turned to Suron and Hannah, who were walking out behind it, and said, "I'm going to meet up with my medical team; they're just two blocks away."
"You guys go first, don't worry about me."
Sulong nodded, gestured for Hannah to get in the car, then opened the door and climbed into the driver's seat.
Su Long stepped on the gas, the engine roared heavily, and the car slid forward, merging into the long river of red taillights on the main road.
The air inside the carriage was somewhat stuffy, so Hannah reached out and turned on the car radio.
After a series of crackling electrical sounds, a male voice rang out in the carriage.
"This is the Seattle Emergency Management Agency, issuing an emergency alert in conjunction with the Federal Anti-Cybersecurity Agency. Effective immediately in Pacific Time."
"A highly destructive Class B eerie threat has been identified in the area near St. James's Cathedral at 804 Ninth Avenue in Seattle's First Mountain District."
"Immediately impose martial law and road closures on the following areas: west to the intersection of Interstate 5 and Fourth Avenue, east to Twenty-Third Avenue, north to Danny Street, and south to Dearborn South Street."
"This threat poses an extremely high risk to the lives and property of people within the restricted area. Non-essential personnel are strictly prohibited from entering the aforementioned street boundaries. Essential workers must present federally certified work credentials to pass through."
"Residents near the controlled area are advised to immediately take shelter in place, stay away from doors and windows, and refrain from going outside."
This alert remains in effect until further notice.
Both of them looked rather serious as they listened to the radio broadcast.
Level B threat.
The rain girl who almost killed him, and the smiling saint who tormented them in their dreams, were both only C-level.
A Class B rating means that the thing has the capability to alter the local environment, cause mass casualties, or even destroy neighborhoods.
Su Long silently increased the pressure on his feet, and the vehicle sped through the rainy night.
Ten minutes later, the previously clear road ahead was completely blocked by a row of vehicles with flashing red and blue police lights.
That was a makeshift military-grade blockade.
A black armored riot control vehicle was parked across the middle of the road, and several fully armed special police officers stood in the rain with automatic rifles in hand.
A SWAT officer stepped forward, shining the blinding beam of his tactical flashlight directly into Su Long's face, while his other hand rested on the trigger guard.
"Identification documents".
Surong pulled out his stained Corpse Management Bureau ID from his pocket, took Hannah's temporary plastic card, and handed it over together.
The SWAT officer took the identification, glanced at it, and after confirming the identities of the two people, threw the identification back into the car and waved to the armored vehicle behind him.
The armored vehicle's engine emitted a deep roar as it slowly reversed, creating a gap.
Su Long stepped on the gas, and the vehicle quickly passed through the roadblocks and entered the restricted area.
The wide streets were deserted, most of the streetlights were off, and only the occasional flashing police lights illuminated the blurry outlines of the buildings on both sides.
Every few hundred meters, you can see a police car parked at the intersection, with several police officers standing outside, vigilantly watching the surroundings.
Two police helicopters hovered low overhead.
Suron parked his car on the edge of the square in front of St. James's Cathedral, which had been turned into a huge temporary command center.
The square was packed with people, and countless people in various uniforms were moving quickly in the rain, carrying equipment, adjusting devices, and shouting instructions.
Hannah unbuckled her seatbelt, placed her hand on the doorknob, and turned to look at Suron.
"I need to go to the church first. The priest said on the phone that the situation was bad. The holy water in the stock has been used up, and I need to go and make new holy water."
Su Long waved his hand, his gaze sweeping over the chaotic crowd outside the window.
"Go, just don't die."
Hannah pushed open the car door, jumped into the rain, and quickly disappeared behind the busy crowd and the mountains of supply boxes.
Su Long got out of the car and walked toward the trucks bearing the logo of the Bureau of Corpses in one corner of the square.
He slowed his pace as he passed the area of the eerie support bureau.
The area was cordoned off separately with yellow warning tape, and several special forces members dressed in black combat uniforms were organizing their equipment.
Sulong spotted Elena immediately.
She wasn't wearing a raincoat; her black tactical vest was soaked through, and her golden ponytail was plastered to the back of her head.
She was standing in front of a middle-aged man in a black trench coat, seemingly arguing fiercely about something, her finger pointing to the closed bronze door of the cathedral.
On the ground beside her were more than a dozen huge metal basins.
Rainwater fell into the basin, creating ripples.
Su Long squinted and, using the light of the searchlight, saw what was sinking at the bottom of the basin.
Those were thousands upon thousands of bright yellow bullets, with the bullet heads displaying a unique silvery-white hue.
The bullets were left completely exposed, soaking in the liquid in the basin.
It wasn't ordinary rainwater; the liquid had a pale pink hue.
Holy water!
So much highly concentrated holy water was used to soak bullets with pure silver tips.
Su Long withdrew his gaze. It seemed that this so-called B-level anomaly had instilled fear even in these arrogant special forces.
He made his way through the crowd to the temporary camp of the Bureau of Corpses.
Watkinson was standing on the back panel of a hearse, holding a whiteboard, yelling at several workers who were putting on protective suits.
"Hurry up! You lazybones!"
"This isn't about picking up trash in a park; we're going to the sewers!"
Su Long walked to the car and patted the metal of the carriage.
Watkinson turned around and saw it was Su Long. A hint of impatience appeared on his fleshy face, but more than that, it was a look of relief.
"Leon, you've finally arrived."
"Where's the new girl you were training? The one named Hannah?"
Sulong shrugged and pointed to the magnificent cathedral behind him.
"You know, she grew up here. I told her to go back and visit first. At times like this, only God can give people a sense of security."
Watkinson snorted and then pointed to a huge metal box next to him.
"Stop talking nonsense and hurry up and collect your equipment."
Su Long walked up to the box, and the equipment inside was completely different from what he usually used.
Instead of the lightweight white protective suit, there was a heavy black rubber bodysuit that looked like a deep-sea diving suit.
The gas mask is not the simple filter type, but a fully enclosed mask with an independent oxygen supply port.
At the bottom of the box was a heavy metal backpack containing specially formulated cremation oil.
Watkinson jumped out of the car, his tone turning serious, and said, "This big trouble comes from underground."
"The torrential rains of the past few days destroyed the city's drainage system. The bodies that hadn't been dealt with in time were all washed into the main drainage ditch under the cathedral, which resulted in the emergence of a Class B monster."
"The people from the Weird Support Bureau are responsible for clearing the way ahead and dealing with the big one. Our task is to follow behind and clean up the corpses that it has awakened or created."
"The Corpse Management Bureau was divided into eight groups, two people in each group, each responsible for a different branch of the pipeline."
A staff member walked over with a large marker in his hand and wrote a huge number "8" on the back and front of Su Long's black rubber raincoat.
"Go ahead, go to the assembly area over there and wait."
Su Long hoisted the heavy fuel tank onto his back, adjusted the shoulder straps, and carried the flamethrower toward the assembly area designated by the Weird Support Bureau.
The rain was getting heavier, making a crackling sound as it hit the rubber raincoat.
As soon as he reached the edge of the cordon, Elena turned her head and her gaze fell on the white number "8" on Su Long's chest.
She strode over: "Where's Hannah?"
Sulong stopped and pointed in the direction of the church.
"She went in first, saying she was going to prepare the holy water."
Elena frowned and glanced around behind Su Long.
"Where's your other teammate? Isn't the Department of Corpses supposed to operate in pairs?"
Su Long spread his hands, looking completely innocent.
"Isn't Hannah my teammate?"
Elena paused for a moment, then a smile suddenly appeared on her tense face.
"That girl likes to do two jobs at the same time. I'll give her the opportunity to do two jobs at the same time. Go to the church and see what she's dawdling about. Call her out. Our team is about to leave."
