America 1869: A Doppelganger Every Day

Chapter 19, Part 2: Using Alexander as Bait

This newspaper directly tied all Chinese people to the Republican Party.

Any Republican who runs for office will be a supporter of Chinese Americans.

In this way, at least one thing can be accomplished.

That would prevent Republicans from targeting Chinese people anymore.

It's unacceptable that Chinese people clearly express their gratitude and stand on your side, yet you still use anti-Chinese sentiment as a pretext to garner votes.

As the largest force in the United States, the Republican Party already represents the majority of the people.

This one move alone could reduce anti-Chinese sentiment in the United States by more than half.

At least among the upper class, a large majority of them are no longer able to openly express their anti-Chinese sentiments.

At the same time, this alignment has another benefit: it may facilitate the issue of Chinese people obtaining U.S. citizenship.

Although the Burlingame Treaty allowed citizenship, obtaining citizenship is extremely difficult for those who desire it.

Wang Qingfu once said that he was able to obtain American citizenship because his adoptive parents were Americans.

Otherwise, he would never have joined.

Currently, very few Chinese Americans hold American citizenship.

Without citizenship, one loses many rights.

Li Changsheng's goal is to take advantage of the fact that the Western Development Strategy is still ongoing to get a large number of Chinese people to become American citizens.

For the Chinese people, land has always been what they yearn for most.

If they could buy more than 1000 acres of land for ten dollars, they would definitely bring their whole family to develop this land.

There will definitely be a surge in Chinese immigration at that time.

If more and more Chinese people come to the US, and if they can obtain American citizenship, they will become a target for politicians.

The Republican Party will pay more attention to Chinese people.

In this way, the status of the Chinese people will be elevated.

With more Chinese people arriving, safety in the west can be guaranteed.

Therefore, Li Changsheng's first purpose in publishing this newspaper was to take sides, and his second purpose was to obtain citizenship at the same time.

Once he completes the naturalization process, he can allow more Chinese people to appear on American soil.

While the Qing Empire was still under the complete disdain of the great powers, more Chinese people were transferred out.

For the Qing Empire, no matter how many immigrants there were, it had no impact.

Because the Qing Empire had a large influx of immigrants, the remaining land was occupied by even more people.

You'll never have to worry about the land going uncultivated.

The Qing Empire may not have much else, but it has a large population.

So, in order to address the issue of citizenship, he put forward a second candidate.

The second half of the front page of the newspaper also featured an American.

Alexander, an ordinary American citizen.

The content is also very simple.

As stated earlier, Alexander was just an ordinary American citizen.

He wasn't even an American at first; he was an orphan from Germany.

A few months earlier, when the transcontinental railroad opened, he heard that it would only take seven days to travel from the East to the West and that for just ten dollars one could own 160 acres of land in the American West.

So he left his homeland and came to the land of America, joining the United States and becoming an American citizen.

After becoming a citizen, he originally wanted to buy 160 acres of land.

But he discovered a very important problem.

The land can be purchased for just ten dollars.

However, there are still regulations for purchasing land.

Residential housing must be built within a year, and the land must be utilized.

It's unrealistic to use all 160 acres of land for farming.

He's just an orphan, he has no family. He'd be lucky to cultivate ten or eight acres.

The rest needs to be used for grazing and animal husbandry, which is something he can't do alone.

Another crucial point is that even if he wanted to accomplish it, he didn't have the financial means.

It was at this time that he met the laborers of China.

He also fell in love with the Chinese language and, with the help of laborers, mastered it in a short period of time.

Then he heard that there were more opportunities in the Qing Empire, so he took a ship to the Qing Empire.

Unexpectedly, it coincided with the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Qing Dynasty and the United States.

The Qing Empire hoped that Americans who understood the Qing language would establish a school within the empire.

So, under immense pressure, he successfully established a foreign language school and became its principal.

He also received high-ranking official positions and generous salaries from the Qing Empire.

In the Qing Empire, this was equivalent to becoming a nobleman and receiving a stipend.

In addition, he owns his own school, which will bring him at least tens of thousands of dollars in income every year.

Moreover, the Qing Empire had just established diplomatic relations with the United States and needed a large number of consuls to be stationed in the United States.

It was under these circumstances that Alexander became the first American to join the Qing Empire after Anson Burlingame became the Qing envoy, and to become the Qing Empire's Consul General in the United States.

He received a stipend from the Qing Empire, which was no less than $100 per month.

He owned the Alexander Foreign Language School, named after him by the Qing Empire, gained fame, and earned an annual income of no less than $1.

He gained diplomatic immunity and the same rights as the consuls general of countries such as Britain and France.

Even if he was under immense pressure and killed someone in America, he still needed to go through diplomatic channels first.

At this point, Alexander appears.

Alexander stated that all of the above are based on his personal experience.

I am not writing this to boast, but to offer a new way out for American citizens.

When you are still confused about the future, when you don't know where the future lies, you might as well go and learn the Chinese language from a Chinese person.

If you really don't know where to study, you can come to San Francisco to find me.

I can arrange for someone to teach you the Chinese language. As long as you can learn the Chinese language, I guarantee that you will be able to obtain the status of a Chinese consul in the United States after a trip to China.

"Please remember that, according to the Burlingame Treaty, China can establish its own consulate in every port city in the United States."

"While I don't know how many port cities there are in our vast land of America, I imagine there are at least 200?"

"Even if it's just 200 cities, then we'll need 200 consuls general and 800 vice consuls."

"And this is just one of the opportunities."

"Once you learn Chinese, you only need to go to China, and I can let you stay there as teachers, and even establish new schools in other parts of China."

"This is an unprecedented opportunity to make a fortune."

"It is also an opportunity to achieve upward mobility in one's social class."

"The opportunity is right in front of you. If you don't know where to go, come find me."

"An ordinary American citizen, the principal of the Alexandria Foreign Language Institute across the ocean, and the consul general of an ancient empire in San Francisco, USA, Alexander."
