"Mr. Jiang lives here. Would you like me to accompany you inside?"

Jiang Xinyue drove Shen Qingzhou to the outside of Jiangjingyuan residential area.

This man surnamed Jiang seemed very anxious. As soon as Jiang Xinyue accepted the order, he immediately contacted her.

After exchanging only a few words, the other party invited Shen Qingzhou to visit his home to see the children before discussing anything further.

And so, this scene unfolded before our eyes.

"No need. You and Xiaoqiu wait for me in the car, or I can take her for a drive around the neighborhood. I'll call you when we're done here."

As Shen Qingzhou spoke, she opened the car door and got out.

The term "night-crying baby" refers to an infant or toddler who eats, drinks, and is otherwise normal during the day, but cries at a set time every night, despite all attempts to soothe or comfort them, and may even cry all night long, only to return to normal as soon as dawn breaks.

In the north, they are often called "Crying Night Lang," "Night-Startled Lang," or simply "Chuang Ke Wa."

In the Hakka and Fujian-Guangdong regions of southern China, they are called "Tian Ti Zi" or "Ye Ti Gui".

The most mainstream folk belief is that a child who cries at night is destined to have the "Night Crying Barrier" from the "Thirty-Six Barriers for Children".

According to folk fortune-telling classics such as "Guan Sha Bai Zhong Jing" and "Xing Ping Hui Hai", children born at certain times are born with this affliction, which manifests as incessant crying at night. If not resolved, it will recur and may even affect the child's physical and mental health.

Aside from these, it's nothing more than being disturbed by evil spirits, losing one's soul in fright, the return of a family member's spirit, feng shui mishaps, or vengeful spirits demanding repayment of debts...

This is a very common "disease," so in the past, people have summarized many ways to resolve it.

One of the most widely circulated methods, which has been used since the Ming Dynasty, involves writing four lines of prayer on red paper: "Heavenly Emperor, Earthly Emperor, my family has a child who cries at night. Passersby, please recite this three times, and he will sleep soundly until dawn." Then, when it is quiet at night, paste it in places with a lot of people, such as the village entrance, bridgehead, utility pole, and old locust tree.

According to folk belief, if a passerby recites the mantra three times, it can take away the child's crying and misfortune, and the child will be able to sleep peacefully that night.

Besides these, there are also rituals such as calling back the soul, treating frightened people, and burning paper money at crossroads.

But clearly, none of these methods seemed to work, because they weren't the first to take on this business. So-called "professionals" had come to see the business before, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

Jiangjingyuan is a high-end residential community built along the river. Just by looking at the location, you can tell that the client's family is well-off.

Shen Qingzhou arrived at Building 6 according to the address and saw an elderly man standing in the corridor, looking towards the entrance of the community.

When the old man saw Shen Qingzhou, a look of doubt and surprise immediately crossed his face.

Before Shen Qingzhou even got close, he took the initiative to greet him.

"Excuse me, are you Master Shen?"

Perhaps it was because Shen Qingzhou was too young that he was unsure whether this "master" was genuine or not.

"It's me, Shen Qingzhou. You must be Mr. Jiang, whom I just contacted?" Shen Qingzhou replied politely, while sizing up the other person.

The elderly man in front of me was slightly plump, wore thick glasses, had a straight back, and exuded the air of a retired cadre. He looked like someone working in the system.

However, he looked somewhat haggard, and even when he was standing here talking to Shen Qingzhou, he appeared listless.

"Yes, my name is Jiang Yuangui. Master, you look very young. May I ask where you practice and which school you follow?" Jiang Yuangui asked directly.

Clearly, his age made him doubt Shen Qingzhou's abilities.

"There's no need to ask these questions. It was already agreed on the phone: if I cure you, I'll get paid; if I don't, I won't get a penny." Shen Qingzhou glanced at him indifferently, her tone slightly cold.

Jiang Yuangui was not annoyed by this; instead, his attitude became even more respectful. He quickly smiled apologetically and said, "It was my fault for being so talkative. This way, please, Master."

After saying that, he led the way.

Shen Qingzhou glanced at the building next to her with some surprise.

Jiang Yuangui noticed his confusion and explained, "The child doesn't live here; he lives just ahead, in the same neighborhood."

It turns out that Jiang Yuangui wanted Shen Qingzhou to see his grandson.

The children do not live with the elderly couple, but live with their son and daughter-in-law in the same community, which makes it convenient for them to take care of the children daily.

"I consulted two so-called masters before, but they had no effect at all. I spent money, but my child still cried all night."

Shen Qingzhou was not surprised.

Shen Qingzhou was not surprised, because it was a matter of "version". The so-called cultivation was just a facade. Most people could only cultivate their character and temperament, and very few, if any, actually mastered the true path.

Of course, this is just his own judgment.

After all, he had little contact with Buddhism and Taoism, and he was unsure whether there were others like him who had truly grasped some of the basics.

"One person calmed the child's fright, another dispelled the evil spirits, and we even consulted other people to call back the child's soul, but none of them worked."

Jiang Yuangui sighed, his voice full of exhaustion.

"Didn't you take him to the hospital?" Shen Qingzhou asked.

"I've seen it. I took him to see it before I came to you. It was because it didn't work that I thought of asking you to give it a try. All this back and forth has really worn my grandson out," Jiang Yuangui said.

As they were talking, Jiang Yuangui led Shen Qingzhou to the door of his son's house.

"Qingya, the master I invited has arrived. Open the door."

Jiang Yuangui knocked on the door very gently, as if afraid of disturbing the child.

Shen Qingzhou's gaze, however, fell on a talisman on the door.

This should be the post from those masters before.

It's drawn quite nicely, but it's completely useless.

Shen Qingzhou was slightly disappointed; it seemed to be two fake masters again.

The reason is simple: the method of this talisman is wrong from the very beginning.

The reason for this belief is the issue of version updates. We live in a technological age, with entirely new versions, but the cultivation methods of the previous era did indeed exist.

Talismans are like pre-packaged code that can be accessed and used at any time. Although due to version issues, talismans can no longer function and have lost their essential purpose.

But in Shen Qingzhou's eyes, the talisman on the door was just a mess of scribbles, and it wouldn't work even if it were put back into the old version.

It looks impressive, but it's just an empty shell.

Of course, even if it's correct, it won't have much effect in the current version. But that doesn't mean all talismans are completely useless. Some simple talismans can still be used in the current version.

This is equivalent to switching from Windows to macOS. However, some documents, images, and compressed files that you create in Windows can still be opened and used in macOS.

Because no matter how many versions are updated, the underlying logic remains the same.

In the previous version, people needed to eat and would die if their major artery was cut. In the new version, people don't need to eat and can still be alive and kicking even if their major artery is cut.

The more basic something is, the more common it is; it's just that the forms of expression are different.

The reason why the talismans drawn by Shen Qingzhou are effective is precisely because of this.

Just then, the door opened from the inside.

A woman in pajamas opened the door.

She smiled very warmly, her eyes crinkling, but there was a deliberate artificiality to it, as if she had been pretending to please others for a long time, making her seem very fake.

Despite having the appearance of a Chinese person with black hair and black eyes, she doesn't look like someone who grew up in China at all.

Oh, she's Asian, or maybe she's a foreign woman, Shen Qingzhou thought to herself.
