Don't move, it's a robbery!
Chapter 64 Unexpected Events
I took Little Dot and Reggie back to the city lord's mansion. Although Tina was still lying in bed, Eve and Leos were not there.
To find out what had happened, I had no choice but to rush into the city.
"Quickly, put out the fire!"
"Don't go that way! Run upwind, there's too much smoke there, you'll choke to death!"
"Has anyone seen my brother? Has anyone seen my brother?!"
"Where are the guards? Where are they?"
"They're fighting off the looters outside the city! Those who can move should hurry and go too; the guards might not be able to hold them off!"
The city was in a great uproar, with panicked people everywhere. Some were trying to put out the fire, some were rescuing people, some were fleeing, and some were taking advantage of the chaos to loot.
Oh, those last kind of people are just too hateful. I happened to be in a bad mood, so I just broke them with a stick and threw them into the fire.
The piercing screams successfully deterred those who were planning to commit robbery. They stopped their looting and seemed to want to escape, but I still had no intention of showing mercy. I killed one of them as I saw them and threw them all into the fire.
After more than ten mischievous animals were slaughtered, the order in the city improved significantly.
Many people recognized me. Although the crisis was not over, they still cheered. Just as I was thinking about how to put out the fire, an old man dressed in fine clothes but covered in cigarette ash suddenly found me.
"Great! We've finally found you! Hurry to the city gates! The guards are about to break through!"
His overly familiar manner puzzled me, because I didn't know him at all.
"No, who are you?"
"I'm Speaker Cage! You're the one who comes here to steal my food every day!"
"Holy crap! Where did your hair go? And what's going on in the city? Why is there a fire and bandits attacking?"
Upon hearing this, old man Cage was immediately enraged. He first cursed and then told me that the attackers of Linde City were not bandits at all, but mercenaries hired by someone else.
"There were more than 20 of them. At first, they pretended to be passing through Linde City, but once they entered the city, they started setting fires and looting everywhere. We wanted to send soldiers to drive them away, but we didn't expect that this was all part of their plan. Their goal was to lure the soldiers in the city out of the city."
"Most of the guards in the city have been lured out and encountered their reinforcements outside the city. They're trapped in the lumberyard. I've sent the rest of them to rescue people. You should go too. As long as you can save them, I'll overlook all the things you did before!"
It's clear that old man Cage is really desperate right now, he's even come to me, a bandit, for help.
Although I don't care about those wanted notices and I don't really care about the council's gratitude, Linde City is still my territory. These outsiders come to my territory to cause trouble without even saying hello. If word gets out, won't people think I'm afraid of them?
I borrowed a horse from an innkeeper and started riding it out of the city. Before I even got out of the city, I saw two strange, disheveled men acting suspiciously.
I didn't want to pay any attention to them at first, but when I got closer to them, I suddenly realized that I actually knew these two people. The woman was called Tulisa, my vampire neighbor in the no-man's-land. As for the man, I couldn't remember his name, but I vaguely remembered that the last time I saw him, he was still my prisoner.
"Thump!"
The prisoner fell.
My sudden appearance startled my female neighbor. Before I could say anything, she started explaining to herself that the two female demons Tina brought had all run away, leaving her alone. As a result, the no-man's-land caught fire tonight, and she had no choice but to escape with her captives.
"Then why don't you go to the city lord's mansion?"
"Because...because I don't know the way!"
These words were obviously a lie, but I didn't expose her. I just pointed to my eyes first, then to my female neighbor, to indicate that I would keep an eye on her, and then rushed out of the city gate without looking back.
When I left the city, I discovered that it wasn't just the city that was on fire, but the area outside the city was too. The towering flames reflected in my eyes, making me furious.
This is my territory!
I rushed to the logging camp without stopping. At that moment, the battle had just reached its climax. The guards who had been besieged had joined up with the support troops and were now breaking out together. The outer perimeter was filled with mercenary troops from outside.
Yes, there are quite a few people, at least several hundred.
The mercenaries who remained on the outermost layer heard the sound of hooves and turned to look at me, then began to shoot at me. Although their arrows were not very accurate, in order to protect the horses, I had no choice but to activate my mist cloak to try to obscure their vision.
Then, the Mist Cloak failed again.
"Holy crap! Why is this cloak malfunctioning?!"
(˶╹ꇴ╹˶): "Meow~ Smash it~ Meow~, that's normal, flames can also dispel fog, but you definitely can't use it at a fire scene~, Meow~ Smash it~ Smash it~"
"Why are you still smacking your lips? Haven't you finished eating yet?"
(˶╹ꇴ╹˶): "No, 'Tribute' smells so good! I never knew before that my kind could smell so good!"
This topic feels a bit strange.
The situation became somewhat awkward for a moment, and I didn't know how to respond. But the archer opposite me came to my rescue, shooting an arrow that struck my horse. The poor horse let out a mournful cry and fell heavily to the ground.
Before I hit the ground, I jumped down, rolled a few times, and continued charging forward. The arrows posed a significant threat, but fortunately, they didn't take me seriously, and not many people fired at me.
At this point, we were very close, and I no longer had any intention of capturing the enemy alive. I immediately had the Rabbit Knife transform, combining with the Three-Star Staff to form a scythe.
The blood moon ripped across the sky, leaving only a red streak.
I swiftly and decisively killed several soldiers at the back, then grabbed the corpses by their collars and began scattering them among the crowd. My aim wasn't to kill anyone, but simply to disrupt their formation.
Their formation wasn't very tight to begin with, and with my interference, the encirclement loosened. The guards seized the opportunity and led their men out from there.
"Damn it, what are you doing! Quickly lead your men to surround them! Everyone in the back, switch to crossbows, don't shoot at the people, but shoot along their path, force them back!"
Although the battlefield was chaotic, I still heard this unusual command. I was somewhat surprised, not expecting that among this group of mercenaries who came to attack the city, there would actually be someone who understood tactics.
But when I turned my head to look, I realized something was wrong.
The armor this guy is wearing looks like he's wearing a noble's medal.
Seemingly realizing that the encirclement had failed, the commanding sergeant gave another order. I realized that this guy was probably the leader of this operation. If we could just take him out, the remaining mercenaries would be like headless flies.
That's right, I'm a bit too far away from this guy.
But it's not a big problem. Just over an hour ago, I learned a new ranged attack in the tomb.
"Congratulations, you unlucky bastard. If you had shown up a few days earlier, I wouldn't have been able to do anything to you."
I chuckled, transformed the rabbit knife into a dagger, and tossed it into the air. The instant it fell, I swung my staff, sending it flying.
A red dot appeared in the sky, and then it struck the sergeant squarely on the forehead. Given the sharpness of the rabbit knife, even with a helmet on, he absolutely could not withstand my attack.
(˶╹ꇴ╹˶): "Wow! They're playing baseball!"
With their commander fallen, the foreign mercenaries immediately descended into chaos. Mercenaries were not a regular army; they could manage in favorable situations, but as soon as things went wrong, their individual agendas emerged, and many actually chose to desert their posts, fleeing with their loot.
Running away is contagious; it spreads from one to ten, and from ten to a hundred. Seeing their teammates flee, coupled with the news of the commander's death, many mercenaries chose to follow their teammates and escape.
Soon, nearly 10% of these foreign mercenaries had fled, and the remaining ones were not very settled either.
The battle was now over, the guards were safe, and my mission was complete.
Just as I was preparing to retreat, I suddenly noticed that next to the enemy commander's corpse, there was a restless fellow reaching for my rabbit knife.
"Damn it! How dare you touch my knife!"
I got angry, grabbed a stick and started charging into the crowd, determined to get my cute bunny knife back before they could escape.
At that moment, the guards who had finally broken through the encirclement arrived near me. They wanted to thank me, but I didn't have time to pay attention to them, so I ignored them and continued charging towards the enemy army.
"Stop! Don't run! Stay here."
Upon hearing my words, the guards froze in place. They exchanged glances, the shock and joy in their eyes gradually fading, before they all erupted with fighting spirit.
"Everyone, keep up! Let's kill them all!"
"Yes! Kill them all! These damned bastards! How dare they attack us! They must pay the price!"
"Kill! Kill!"
Nobody knows what they were thinking, but the guards gave up on running away and all turned around and followed me. Wherever I ran, they followed.
Although outnumbered, the guards displayed a high level of fighting spirit and suddenly became unstoppable.
The mercenaries on the other side did try to stop me, but these ordinary mercenaries were no match for me. With me leading the charge, even if someone tried to stop me, they would be shattered at the slightest touch.
This completely reversed the morale of both sides.
Even though we had less than a third of their numbers, we were still able to chase them down.
I didn't care about anyone else, and just stared intently at the guy who took my rabbit knife. The kid was wearing a bright suit of armor, making him very easy to spot.
The only problem is that this guy has a lot of guards around him, and they are all quite skilled. They are also wearing sturdy armor, just like a regular army. Several times I tried to kill that bastard from a distance by picking up weapons from the ground and throwing them, but the guards blocked me every time.
There was no other way but to give chase. After a chase that lasted for more than half an hour, I finally managed to take down all the guards and catch up with that bastard.
"Run! Keep running! Damn it! Running this fast while wearing armor! You're pretty good!"
I cursed and ripped off his helmet, then slapped him across the face several times before reaching for my rabbit knife. The kid I was beating had no energy left to resist; even after I slapped him several times, he showed no sign of resistance and surrendered very easily.
I wanted to teach him another lesson, but then I heard the cheers of the guards.
"Long live! Long live!"
"We won! We actually won!"
Seeing the excited guards, I couldn't help but smile.
By this time I was exhausted and had no energy left to clean up the battlefield. The guards found me a horse, and I rode it back to the city.
I don't remember much after that, but I vaguely remember that I led people back to the city and helped put out the fire. It seemed like a lot of people were cheering for me, but I really didn't have the energy to respond to them.
When I woke up again, I found myself back at the city lord's mansion.
After a night's rest, the injuries I sustained in the tomb have almost healed, and my tired body has also recovered.
I sat up in bed and stretched. The weather wasn't good today; it was probably due to the fire last night, and there was still a burnt smell in the air.
After tidying up a bit, I went outside and found that the city lord's mansion was unusually lively.
Citizens whose houses were destroyed and who needed resettlement, members of parliament, children from orphanages, soldiers from the guard post—a large group of all sorts of people were gathered in the courtyard of the city lord's mansion, seemingly arguing about something.
I wasn't very interested in what was happening in the city, and I was just about to turn around and leave when I noticed that everyone had fallen silent.
"A chivalrous thief! A chivalrous thief!"
"He saved us!"
"Mom, look! It's a Robin Hood!"
I was a little confused and hadn't figured out what was happening when I saw a huge crowd surging towards me. I was so scared that I ran back into the house and blocked the door behind me.
Blocking the gate didn't deter the people outside; they continued banging on it, seemingly trying to break in.
To be honest, I've never encountered a situation like this before.
Holy crap! That's terrifying!
