Chapter 57 Goblin Invasion
The night was deep, and the moon was obscured by thick, dark clouds, revealing no light whatsoever.
Instead, fine rain streaked across the sky, landing on the stone wall of the town gate and flowing down along the stone's texture.
The town gates are closed at night.
The heavy iron gate was firmly embedded in the gate slot in the ground, heavy and dark.
South gate of Phil Town.
Two guards on night patrol walked by.
Since the town was divided into sunrise and sunset zones, it has never been attacked by any other race.
The tradition of guarding the gates was gradually abandoned.
At night, the guards simply patrolled the gate as part of their patrol route.
The two walked up the stairs inside the gate to the gatehouse.
The young guard Archie complained angrily from the rear: "Damn weather, damn veterans, why is it always the two of us who have to patrol in this kind of weather?"
As autumn deepens, the rain here becomes more frequent.
"You'll get used to it. Once we become veterans, we can also sleep comfortably by the fire in the barracks," Parker whispered, offering words of comfort as he walked ahead.
The cool rain seeped into his inner shirt through the gaps in his armor, and Archie felt damp and uncomfortable.
He called to Parker, "Hurry up and get out of here, find a dry place to relax for a while."
Parker suddenly stopped and listened intently: "Did you hear anything outside?"
A distracted Archie nearly bumped into Parker, complaining, "Hey! What else can we hear besides the damn rain?"
He turned his head slightly as soon as he finished speaking, looking towards the gate.
It was pitch black outside, and I couldn't see anything at all.
But amidst the sound of rain in the darkness, a dragging sound could be faintly heard.
The two exchanged a glance, both seeing confusion in each other's eyes.
Parker closed his eyes and listened intently.
Sudden.
A light shone outside the gate.
The flames coalesced into a fireball, drawing ever closer as it flew toward the city wall.
"boom!"
The fireball struck the iron gate and exploded with a loud bang.
A faint runic glow shone on the town's walls, reducing the power of the fireball spell by more than half.
Parker and Archie on the gatehouse stood frozen in place.
The firelight also illuminated the scene outside the gate.
A group of green, pointy-eared creatures gathered outside the door.
They blew their horns, bared their sharp teeth, and shouted.
Two burly bear goblins dragged a heavy catapult.
The boulders on the catapults arced through the air and crashed heavily against the stone wall.
Parker grabbed Archie and tackled him to the ground.
"Enemy attack! It's an enemy attack!!"
Archie stared blankly at Parker, who was shaking him, as if he were in a daze.
"Let's go, let's sound the alarm!"
Archie finally snapped out of his daze.
He just turned nineteen this year.
I remember my family telling me that three years before I was born, the town of Phil underwent zoning reforms, and since then, peaceful days have come.
I never imagined that I would witness war in my lifetime.
"Let's go." The two got up and ran quickly toward the direction of the alarm.
"Swish"
An armor-piercing arrow shot from below the gatehouse, hitting Parker precisely in front of him.
The arrow pierced his armor and lodged in his chest.
"Ugh, cough, cough." Parker coughed violently.
Archie lay down again, urgently calling out to his teammates, "Parker! Parker!!"
Blood kept gushing from Parker's mouth, mixing with the rain and staining the ground red.
"Alarm...alarm..."
"Okay!" Archie dared not get up again.
They crawled with difficulty, clinging tightly to the stone bricks of the gate tower.
There were alarms on all four gates of the town, so the target wasn't far away; all you had to do was climb down the gate tower.
Archie's limbs were stiff, his helmet had fallen off at some point, and his face was covered in mud.
His mind was a complete mess, and all he could see were images of Parker's dying moments.
Finally climbing down the gate tower, he stared blankly at the alarm cord five meters away.
......
Rhodes stood by the window, listening to the sound of raindrops falling on the windowsill.
He loves to fall asleep to the sound of rain, especially this kind of light drizzle. He can fall asleep as soon as he's wrapped in a blanket indoors and closes his eyes.
But tonight I'm unusually sleepless.
Perhaps it's just my imagination.
During the day, he always felt like he was being watched.
This feeling is unpleasant. Sometimes I feel like something is watching me, and other times I think it's just my imagination.
Maybe I didn't get enough rest?
Rhodes stood by the window, looking at the dim street scene outside, trying to distract himself.
Paril slept soundly inside, occasionally letting out soft snores.
Sudden.
The piercing alarm shattered the silence of the rainy night.
Rhodes' heart skipped a beat.
It's south of the town!
"Paril!"
Rhodes called out the little priest's name, but Paril just rolled over.
Rhodes took two steps to Paril's bedside and gently pushed her slender shoulders.
After being shaken for a while, Paril finally opened her eyes groggily.
When the two picked up their weapons and opened the door, they found that Avira, dressed in heavy armor, was already waiting at the door.
The sounds of hurried footsteps and shouts echoed throughout the hotel.
A scene before disaster strikes.
"Shall we go take a look?" Rhodes issued a combat request.
Avira picked up her greatsword and followed.
......
"Bang!"
"boom!"
The goblin mage alternated between fire spells and catapults.
Soon the magical patterns on the stone wall began to flicker.
"Bang!"
Another boulder flew out and landed on the stone wall next to the town gate, smashing a crack in it, and bricks crashed to the ground.
"very good."
"Keep loading the catapults, the demolition team can move in."
The lead goblin, leaning on a gleaming white bone staff, stood motionless, giving orders methodically.
As soon as it gave the order, a team of goblins who were already prepared piled the tobacco and oil barrels they were carrying on their backs under the gap in the stone wall, and then quickly ran away.
Another fireball streaked through the air and detonated precisely.
The enormous flames illuminated the sky, and the stone walls cracked, revealing the town's interior.
The goblins outside the door erupted in deafening cheers and charged madly into the breach.
The leading goblin remained standing in the same spot, without moving an inch.
It waved its hand, and another group of goblins emerged from their hiding place.
The group of goblins were all dressed in dark cloaks and carried identical gray-white daggers.
The lead goblin chanted indistinct syllables, and the dagger in his hand faintly glowed before its surface dimmed again.
"Go and solve the remote profession problem."
Several goblins simultaneously opened a bottle of potion and drank it down, their forms slowly becoming transparent.
The guards of Phil town arrived relatively quickly, gathering in groups of two or three towards the entrance.
They quickly engaged in battle with the goblins who rushed in.
The goblins pouring in through the gap were dressed in leather armor, armor, or even a mix of different styles.
They brandished their knives and axes, frantically attacking the surrounding humans, like a green ocean.
A goblin swung a giant cleaver and smashed it into a guard's chest.
Another guard saw his companion get hit and was about to help when a goblin climbed onto his back.
The goblin's legs were tightly wrapped around his waist, and he took off his helmet and bit down hard on his neck.
"Whoosh."
A long arrow pierced the goblin's head on the guard's back, spraying dark green blood, and then the guard's body lit up with a green light.
He turned around and saw several adventurers wearing apprentice badges arriving at the battlefield.
"Occupy the gatehouse! Occupy the high ground!"
Amidst the chaos of the battlefield, someone shouted something, and both sides began to rush towards the gate tower steps.
The scene immediately became even more chaotic.
