Wasteland Lord: Starting from Thirty Days to Live
Chapter 53 "A Heart of Abundance"
"I'll tell you! I'll tell you everything! I can even give you all the power she gave me, just please spare my life." Poison Fang smiled obsequiously.
"She is..."
Just as Venomous Fang was about to say something, his eyes suddenly widened, his eyeballs bulged out as if they were about to burst from their sockets, and his face contorted as if he had experienced great pain. He opened his mouth wide, but could not utter a single word.
Edmund stepped back with some suspicion.
Suddenly, Venomous Fang's entire chest burst open from the inside out, and a small, menacing creature crawled out from within.
It appears fragile, like a young creature, but its use of its head and claws to rip open its fangs reveals that it is not as harmless as it seems.
It looked around and found many people staring at it in fear.
Then it let out a shriek and rushed out of its fangs, trying to escape into the depths of the forest.
However, a pottery jar fell from the sky and landed directly on the ground.
It was Edmund who promptly picked up a small jar from the ground and placed the object inside.
The creature seemed to realize it was trapped. It began to struggle violently inside the clay pot.
The earthenware pot was actually not very sturdy, and it looked like it was about to break.
Edmund quickly ordered a soldier next to him to remove his woven armor, and when the pottery jar was almost broken, he quickly wrapped it inside with the armor plates.
These armor plates were made from the bones of a level-two bone bear, and the thread used for weaving was made from tendons found on its body, making them incredibly tough.
Now it had no room to escape.
Edmund brought the object closer and, through the gaps in the armor, gradually came to see its appearance.
It was a small, fist-sized, pure black creature. Its body was shaped like an octopus, with a round upper body and numerous tentacles on its lower body.
The creature's body was entirely black and slimy, resembling some kind of marine product, and emitted an indescribable fishy smell.
Its main body, a round "head," has no facial features, only a mouth of moderate size. With its sharp screech, rows of neat, human-like teeth are occasionally revealed inside.
What's even stranger is that its surface isn't smooth like real seafood; instead, it's covered in a layer of fuzzy, curly hair, making it look like goat's wool.
But at this moment, the fur was wet and clinging to his body, just like a newborn baby.
Edmund glanced at it and felt dizzy. Strange echoes seemed to reverberate in his mind, and his heart began to pound violently, making it impossible for him to remain calm.
He quickly grabbed a cloth and wrapped the armor and its contents inside, thus preventing anyone from peeping.
What blasphemy!
How bizarre!
Edmund looked around and found that all of Fang's men had been subdued.
The refugees stared longingly at Edmund, wondering what their fate would be.
The campaign against the clay village had come to an end, and the entire south bank had been cleared clean. However, when Edmund saw the thing he had just seen, he felt no joy of victory. Instead, a sense of worry and anxiety welled up in his heart.
"Detain those bandits and bring all these refugees back to the castle."
Right after Edmund gave the order, in an inconspicuous corner of the refugee group, a little girl looked up with a triumphant smile on her face.
It's Lina.
Her face no longer looked like it had been burned; instead, it had a different look.
However, for safety's sake, she still ordered "Heart of Abundance" to kill Venom.
Since the objective has been achieved and the fang's mission is complete, he is no longer of any use.
Killing Venomous Fang would actually eliminate the possibility of her being exposed.
However, as a result, the "Heart of Abundance" fell into Edmund's hands.
But she didn't care at all.
To join River Bend Fort, one would gladly give up a mere "Heart of Abundance".
She... was already looking forward to what would happen after entering the castle.
…………
……
Vittorio stood in the room listening to Edmund's full report on the conquest of the clay village.
The following very important events occurred during this sortie.
First, the simulation unexpectedly went wrong.
Naturally, Vittorio had conducted a simulation before the official attack, but that simulation only featured the various small fry in Clay Town and the final boss, Grom; the so-called refugees and the suddenly mutated Venomous Fang gang did not appear.
In other words, simulations are not 100% accurate, and sometimes unexpected situations may occur.
It could be a sudden enemy, or it could be the weather.
Vittorio kept this information in mind, reminding himself that although simulation was a very useful tool, he couldn't put all his hopes on it.
Secondly, a strangely shaped monster bursts out of the belly of a venomous creature.
Vittorio specifically asked Ethan to use the remaining bones to build a small cage and put the thing inside.
Vittorio was staring at the thing at that moment, and after only a short while, he began to experience the dizziness, nausea, and delirium that Edmund had described.
So he quickly lowered the black cloth on top of the cage to cover it up.
Vittorio came up with a fitting adjective for this phenomenon—"sanity-dropping."
This isn't a mental breakdown, it's a purely physical one; just seeing this thing will trigger a physiological reaction.
This must be something extremely evil, combined with the clues found in the basement earlier.
Aside from the people of the Abundance School, Vittorio could not think of a second source.
In other words, the people of the Fengrang School, who were lurking in the shadows, also noticed the rise of River Bend and were quietly infiltrating and probing in their own way.
Unfortunately, Vittorio was in the open while the other was in the shadows, so Vittorio had no idea who this person really was.
The third thing is those refugees.
This matter is connected to the first one; in Vittorio's simulation, there were no sudden influxes of refugees.
The impact of these refugees on River Bend Fort was both positive and negative.
The positive aspect is naturally population growth. In an era of low productivity, human resources are the most important resource. Whether it's war or farming, people are everything.
Previously, River Bend Fort was clearly short of human resources, and this group of refugees numbered at least 200 people, which could greatly supplement the population of River Bend.
But there are also downsides, namely that there are too many people and they are too diverse.
Putting aside the increased management difficulties these people would bring, the first concern is Vittorio; there's no guarantee that there aren't any spies from the Abundance School among them.
However, we cannot completely shut these people out.
Therefore, a "ritual" is necessary.
Just as he was pondering this, someone walked in from outside and bowed to him.
"Lord Vittorio, the execution platform is ready."
