American homeless people, surviving in the city
Chapter 63 Sylvia's Gift
As usual, a long queue formed in front of the food truck, showing that even the increased police efforts to sweep the streets could not dampen the enthusiasm of the homeless for enjoying the relief meals.
This time, however, the trio of programmers are still persisting in the illegal clinic, but there are far fewer familiar faces in the group.
Having learned from his previous experiences here, as soon as he approached the relief food truck, Lin Qi immediately widened his eyes and looked around, afraid that he would see those people in strange ethnic costumes wandering around again.
Fortunately, after scanning the area, Lin Qi finally didn't see any trace of those strange people, and [Rat's Sense] also confirmed that it didn't report any sense of danger.
It seems Sylvia has already taken care of this matter?
I wonder if she will continue to distribute relief meals here... If she knows that someone is following her, she probably won't come out to do charity anymore.
Lin Qi had a good impression of the young lady who offered him an umbrella, and naturally didn't want anything to happen to her.
As for something as trivial as not being able to see beautiful women, I certainly wouldn't care.
While they were lost in thought, it wasn't long before the three of them lined up in front of the relief food truck.
Sure enough, today it wasn't Sylvia distributing the food from the food cart, but a plump auntie wearing an OSL uniform.
The aunt's service attitude towards the homeless was noticeably worse than Sylvia's. Not only did she not speak softly to the homeless, but her actions in packing the food were also much more rude.
"Hey—! Why isn't it the same beautiful girl as before?!"
Raul wailed, but fearing that the fat aunt would not give him his free meal later, he only dared to complain in a low voice.
Lin Qi smiled but didn't reply.
"Next!"
The plump aunt's rough voice rang out from inside the food cart.
Lynch stepped forward, with Raul and old James following behind him.
She thought she would just grab a free meal and leave, but when the plump aunt saw Lin Qi's face clearly, she was suddenly stunned.
Then, she bent down slightly, adopted a friendly tone, and asked kindly:
"Excuse me, are you Mr. Lynch?"
"Huh?" Lin Qi was completely taken aback when a strange aunt called him by his name, and was momentarily confused.
However, his [Rat's Sense] still didn't report any danger, so he honestly replied:
"Uh, it's me. How can I help you?"
"It's nothing, please wait a moment." The auntie smiled chubbyly, turned around and went into the food cart, leaving Lynch, Raul and old James staring at each other outside.
Raul looked at Lynch with the eyes of someone looking at a monster: "I'm saying... Boss, just how many things do you still not know about me?"
"You actually know some big shots in OSL!"
...Is an auntie distributing relief meals on the street considered a big shot? If I said I saw Vesalio yesterday, wouldn't you faint from fright?
Lin Qi found it amusing, but he really didn't know why the fat aunt had called him over, so he could only wait quietly outside.
Not long after, the plump aunt came out of the food cart carrying a beautifully packaged foil bag. Unlike the thin brown paper bags used to serve meals to ordinary homeless people, this bag looked much more refined.
"Mr. Lynch, this is something Miss Sylvia asked me to bring for you. She said you're very likely to appear here again." The plump aunt handed the paper bag out of the food cart with both hands. "This is Chinese food that Miss Sylvia specially bought from Panda Restaurant. Please enjoy."
"this...?"
After a moment's thought, Lynch quickly understood the situation: "You know Sylvia?"
The plump auntie smiled and said, "It's been a bit dangerous outside lately, so I was asked by Miss Sylvia to come here to collect data for her social experiment."
Lin Qi understood: "I see. Please give my thanks to Sylvia."
"So, she joined OSL to do charity work in order to collect data for social experiments? I knew it. Although I don't know much about her family background, she seems like a rich girl..."
"Yes, it's a requirement of her university courses." The plump aunt nodded. "Miss Sylvia has always been very serious about her studies."
Lynch nodded. Since it was Miss Sylvia who was offering him food, he was naturally happy to accept it.
He took the foil bag from the plump aunt, thanked her, and then turned to point to Raul and old James behind him:
"These two are my friends, could you please give them a little more food?"
"Of course," the plump aunt readily agreed, and quickly got to work. Before long, two full paper bags were handed out of the food cart again.
Under Lynch's direct gaze, Raul and old James took the two full paper bags with a bewildered expression, and the three of them stepped aside and walked to a secluded spot not far away.
Raul eagerly opened his paper bag, the food inside almost overflowing due to his clumsy movements.
Double burgers, double drinks, double fruit...
Raul unwrapped the hamburger, took a big bite, and exclaimed in delight, "It's still hot!"
Old James also took a hamburger from his bag, took a slow bite, and then explained, "These hamburgers were probably taken from the middle section, where they're kept warm, because of Lynch."
As he spoke, he gave Lin Qi a meaningful look:
"If I'm not mistaken, the person you know isn't actually that older woman from earlier, but rather that very pretty young lady who served the food, right?"
"Haha, you guessed right..." Lin Qi scratched his head.
When Raul heard that Lynch had actually admitted it, his eyes widened, and even the hamburger in his mouth lost its flavor.
"No, boss, I was still lamenting that I couldn't see any pretty girls, and you've already secretly gotten to know one?"
"How did you do that?! Teach me!"
Is this something I can teach?
If you visit suicide sites more often, you might get to know them...
Lin Qi really didn't know how to answer, so he simply pretended to be deaf and dumb and opened his tin foil bag.
Inside was a clean lunchbox, neatly divided into compartments, containing all sorts of dishes.
The crispy chicken nuggets coated in a bright orange sauce look like classic General Tso's Chicken; the beef strips paired with undercooked broccoli and a sweet sauce with a black pepper flavor—this must be Mongolian beef.
It's served with a staple of American Chinese cuisine—stir-fried noodles with shredded onions and cabbage.
In short, this is a typical Americanized Chinese meal.
Lynch used the fork that came with the packaging to pick up a piece of fried chicken and put it in his mouth. A rich, sweet aroma immediately burst in his mouth.
Although it's a bit sweet, it's still quite tasty, more like fried chicken nuggets with dipping sauce from a fast food restaurant.
However, it has absolutely nothing to do with Chinese food.
Is this the only kind of Chinese food that Americans eat regularly?
A thought slowly appeared in Lin Qi's mind.
Now that I've accepted Sylvia's kindness, I might cook her an authentic Chinese meal the next time I see her.
