Chapter 11 Antibiotics
"trade?"
Sir Gavin remained silent for a moment, his cold face expressionless, his sharp gaze slowly shifting between Lynn's calm face and the ashen-faced Dr. Herbert, who was slumped on the ground.
Only the sound of the wind and the faint chirping of birds in the distance remained in the woods, and everyone awaited his answer.
"What deal? Do you mean you want this Dr. Herbert?" Gavin asked, slightly suspicious.
"No, no, no, this Dr. Herbert is, after all, a free man under Earl Lehman's territory, and I have no right to interfere."
Knight Gavin's curiosity gave Lynn a clue. Herbert, who was sitting slumped nearby, looked even more gloomy upon hearing this.
Lynn paused for a moment: "My bargaining chip is: I can cure the young master's illness."
"!" Gavin and Herbert both widened their eyes upon hearing Lynn's words. Gavin spoke up immediately, his tone full of doubt:
"Lord Lynn, do you know what you're saying?"
Gavin's sharp gaze was fixed on Lynn:
"Even if you are a viscount, you cannot treat the count like this. What you are trading may be the countess's wrath and a father's hope on the verge of despair. This is not a trade of furs in the market."
"That's precisely why it's worth a try," Lynn laughed. "Isn't that right?"
"Borrowing back someone who can't save the young master from his predicament, Captain Gavin, you might not be punished..."
Lynn leaned forward slightly, his voice now sounding almost seductive:
"But if you can directly cure the young master's illness, then Captain Gavin, that would be a great achievement!"
Lynn pointed to his head:
"I've seen records of folk remedies for intractable diseases in some old, less orthodox books, methods that differ from ordinary herbal remedies. Perhaps I can help the young master recover; isn't that more meaningful than pure despair and seeking blame?"
Seeing the other party remain silent, Lynn offered another promise: "I guarantee with my title and lands that I will accompany you to the castle and personally explain the situation to the Earl and Lady. If our efforts still prove futile..."
He paused, his gaze sweeping over the Herbert family, his tone becoming more serious: "...When the time comes, you will carry out the lady's orders without my interference, and Grayrock Town will provide compensation to the Earl to the satisfaction of today's 'misunderstanding.' As for myself—Lynn Cole—I will also be at the Earl's disposal."
These words deeply shook Gavin. They elevated him from someone who had merely completed the task to someone who might receive a great reward.
More importantly, Lynn made a promise to personally step forward and take responsibility for the consequences, and stated directly that he would bear all the responsibility, which greatly reduced Gavin's personal risk.
"...Very well, Lord Lynn...no...Lord Lynn. Since you have guaranteed it, then so be it. But let me make this clear from the start: if you merely offer empty words, wasting time without achieving anything, then..."
His gaze swept over the guards behind Lynn and the simple flag: "...The consequences are far beyond what a small town like Grayrock can bear."
Gavin tapped the leather twice lightly with his fingers gripping the reins. He looked at Herbert again and saw the old doctor's eyes filled with a mixture of fear and a last glimmer of hope. He then gave the order:
"Fall back!"
"Nonsense? Hmph! You'll soon find out what 'technological marvels' from another world really mean!"
Lynn chuckled inwardly. He then instructed Leon to set off with him, while the rest of the group took Herbert's family back to Grayrock Town first.
As the sun set, Lynn and his companions embarked on their journey to the Earl's territory...
The horses galloped swiftly, and the group arrived at Earl Lehman's castle before nightfall.
It was a sturdy stone fortress, with a somber atmosphere. Gavin led Lynn and Herbert straight to the main hall.
Count Lehmann and his wife had been waiting in the hall for some time.
At this moment, Earl Lehman looked haggard, his chiseled face etched with worry. The Countess's eyes were red and swollen, and her gaze towards Herbert was filled with anger.
"How did it get to this point! Gavin!" Upon seeing Gavin, Earl Lehman's face instantly turned furious, but the next moment, his gaze fell on Lynn and Leon standing to the side.
Who are you?
"Lynn Cole, Lord of Grayrock Town."
Upon hearing the name, Earl Lehman seemed to recall something: "Cole... I remember now, isn't he the viscount who was exiled here...?"
He paused, as if remembering his troubles: "Lord Lynn, please forgive me, I have urgent business to attend to at the moment."
"I know about the young master's illness, right? I have a way to cure it, that's why I'm here," Lynn said calmly.
"What did you say?" Earl Lehman was startled by what he said, and the Countess also looked over with a surprised and expectant gaze.
Looking at Lynn's calm and composed face, the count's expression darkened. He instinctively felt that the other party was mocking him. None of the doctors in the territory could cure his son's illness, so what made him think he could?
But Lehman was unwilling to give up any chance to try. After a moment of silence, the Earl's hoarse voice rang out: "You'd better really have a way, Lord Lynn."
After bowing, Lynn requested directly, "Please allow me to see the young master first."
The count gave him a deep look, then turned and led the way.
Inside the room, the boy on the sickbed was only seven or eight years old. His cheeks were flushed, and his breathing was rapid and labored; he was already in a dazed state. The strong smell of medicine could not mask the weakness in his breath.
Herbert, trembling, briefly described the illness and the medications used, finally bowing his head in despair. The Countess almost collapsed.
After carefully examining the items, Lynn breathed a sigh of relief.
Based on the symptoms and the count's description, it is undoubtedly chlamydial pneumonia. He had it when he was a child in his previous life and still remembers it.
Lynn put his hands in his pockets and used his popularity points to exchange for a box of azithromycin enteric-coated capsules. Fortunately, the stuff wasn't too expensive, costing him only 100 popularity points.
He turned to the count and countess and said in a solemn tone, "The young master's lung heat and pathogenic factors are exceptionally stubborn, and ordinary medicines are ineffective."
The count clenched his fist tightly.
"However," Lynn changed the subject, taking out a small white box from his pocket, "I have an extremely special medicine, derived from a forbidden inheritance of ancient alchemy. The ingredients are rare, and I only have one copy."
He opened the medicine box and took out a strip of capsules. This strange item, which no one had ever seen before, instantly attracted everyone's attention.
"Take this medicine one capsule at a time." Lynn took out a capsule and looked at Earl Lehman: "This is the last chance I can offer. Use it or not, please decide quickly."
The air in the room seemed to freeze. Earl Lehman stared intently at the strange drug, then at his dying son, veins throbbing on his forehead. Every second felt incredibly long.
Finally, he hoarsely uttered his decision: "...Use it!"
Lynn took a deep breath, put two capsules into the boy's mouth, then turned to the Earl and said:
"Prepare steamed egg custard, noodles, vegetable soup, and other similar foods for the young master on a regular basis. Avoid spicy and greasy foods. Take this medicine three times a day, one pill each time. He should recover naturally in 3-5 days."
Lynn handed the medicine box to the Earl and calmly said, "It takes time for the medicine to take effect. The next few hours are crucial."
"Now it all depends on how well the antibiotics work..." Lynn thought to herself.
Earl Lehman accepted the medicine box with some skepticism. His gaze lingered on Lynn's face with mixed feelings, while the Countess leaned against her husband, sobbing softly.
Night had completely enveloped the castle. Inside the room, only the flickering firelight from the fireplace and the faint yet heart-wrenching breathing from the bed remained.
