Lord: My Shop Connects to Modern Times
Chapter 13 Guide to Otherworldly Medicine
Several days have passed in the blink of an eye, and Grayrock Town looks completely different from when Lynn first arrived.
Lynn stretched lazily and crawled out of the soft blankets.
He had already replaced the old hard wooden bed that looked like a coffin lid. After bringing back a batch of supplies from Earl Lehman and gaining a lot of public support, Lynn immediately replaced the bed.
There's no way around it, I just can't sleep well. If I can't sleep well at night, how can I think and plan properly during the day to lead my people to a better life?
Lynn stood at the window of his stone house, the morning breeze carrying the damp scent of earth filling his nostrils.
The houses in the camp are no longer as dilapidated as when we first arrived. Several neat wooden frames have been erected, some with freshly cut bark on the roof, and some even with old tiles cleared from the ruins. Although they are still simple, at least they look like "houses".
Newly delivered stones and timber were piled up on the open ground, and two old men were slowly processing the timber with newly made saws, making a rhythmic rustling sound.
In the distance, Gem led several women to weed the potato field; the tender green seedlings looked reassuring.
"It's so cool to have a nurturing relationship..." Lynn joked with a smile.
He was holding a thin, new booklet bound with rough but sturdy local paper, the ink not yet completely dry.
The booklet's cover bears his name, written in the universal language of the world: "Simple Coping Methods for Common Ailments and an Introduction to Herbs".
The contents of this booklet come from a "Practical Basic Medical Guide (Illustrated Edition)" that he redeemed a few days ago with 200 points of public opinion.
He spent several nights rewriting, simplifying, and adapting the diagrams, combining his limited common sense from his previous life with the local herbal names Herbert had mentioned, using the local language.
The content involving surgery and complex instruments, which is currently impossible to implement, has been removed. The focus has been on retaining simple treatments for common ailments such as wound cleaning and bandaging, fracture fixation, fever, and diarrhea.
He also found hand-drawn illustrations and brief uses of more than a dozen commonly used local herbs that could be found. It was essentially a difficult "translation" and "localization" project.
"The medical manual is pretty much finished; it's time to go find Herbert."
Lynn, carrying the still-scented "translation" and a small cloth bag, walked towards the best-lit stone house, which had been specially cleaned out at the east end of town.
That place is now Dr. Herbert's temporary home and the future Graystone Town Clinic.
The room was filled with the aroma of herbs.
At this moment, the old doctor Herbert was staring blankly at several half-empty herb bags in the corner. The panic he had shown at the Earl's castle was gone from his face, replaced by a hint of loneliness.
The son, Aidan, stood silently beside him, vigorously pounding the medicine with a pestle.
"Dr. Herbert." Lynn knocked on the door frame.
Herbert snapped out of his reverie, saw it was Lynn, and quickly stood up, instinctively trying to bow: "My lord..."
"Sit down, sit down and talk." Lynn waved his hand, pulled over a wooden stool and sat down, placing the handwritten book and cloth bag on the table.
Herbert's gaze was involuntarily drawn to the unfamiliar booklet. The booklet was plain in style, but neatly bound, and the familiar generic title on the cover made his heart skip a beat.
"You've settled in Grayrock Town these past few days, is there anything you need?" Lynn asked first.
"We have everything we need. We have a house, we have food, and we don't have to worry about safety," Herbert said quickly, his tone grateful, but the emptiness in his eyes was still undeniable.
"But... when I have some free time, looking at these few simple herbs, I think about my meager skills and feel ashamed that you took me in."
Lynn nodded in understanding.
The Earl's miraculous antibiotics had such a profound impact on him that Herbert had asked himself more than once in the past few days about the ancient alchemy and the forbidden medical knowledge passed down through generations.
Lynn picked up the booklet and handed it over: "Take a look at this."
Herbert carefully wiped his hands on his clothes before respectfully accepting the book. Once he opened the first page, his eyes were glued to it.
The booklet contained neatly handwritten text in a language he was familiar with, but it contained content he had never encountered before in such a systematic way.
"The most important aspect of wound cleaning is 'cleanliness.' Boil water and let it cool to a warm temperature. Use a clean cotton cloth dipped in the water to wipe the wound from the inside out. Do not use river water or saliva..."
A simple line drawing illustrates the direction of the cleaning process.
He flipped through the pages quickly, his breathing becoming increasingly heavy.
The following section includes diagrams on how to use wooden boards and cloth strips to immobilize suspected broken bones. It also covers key points for distinguishing between ordinary fever and dangerous fever. Furthermore, it provides reminders on how to dig a pit to dispose of patient excrement to prevent the spread of "viruses."
There were also more than a dozen pages of meticulously drawn plant illustrations with their names and main uses marked on the side—some of which he recognized at a glance as common roadside weeds that he had never imagined could be used in that way.
There were several other patterns that seemed familiar to him, but he couldn't recall their names or uses. The brief descriptions next to the patterns seemed to open a new window for him.
"This...this..." Herbert's hands began to tremble. He looked up at Lynn, his eyes filled with disbelief, shock, and a thirst for knowledge.
"My lord! This book... what it contains seems simple and unadorned, yet... every sentence hits the nail on the head! The illustrations further clarify the key techniques! I wonder... I wonder whose great physician this is? May I have the honor of reading the original?"
He subconsciously believed that this handwritten copy must have come from a much more vast and profound medical classic.
"The original book has long been lost, and we don't know who the author was," Lynn replied. "This is an ancient book that I read a long time ago. Perhaps it will be useful to you, so I copied it down from memory."
"It's useful! It's so useful!" Herbert's voice trembled with excitement as he clutched the booklet tightly.
"My lord, with this book, my medical skills will surely improve even further, and I will be able to save even more lives!"
Seeing his father so excited, Aidan couldn't help but come over to take a look, and was immediately drawn to the clear and intuitive illustrations.
Lynn smiled, then opened the small cloth bag again, revealing a peculiar, sealed vial and several gleaming silver blister packs with capsules embedded in them. The material and shape of these two items formed a stark contrast to the rough and primitive objects in the room.
"This?! This is! The one the Earl's mansion used last time..." Herbert's attention was instantly drawn, and he looked at those creations that definitely did not belong to this world with surprise and uncertainty.
What Lynn took out were saline solution and amoxicillin capsules.
"Don't ask where these things came from. I'll explain to you how to use them."
He carefully explained the usage and dosage of the capsules, as well as the contraindication that the saline solution must be opened and used only in a clean environment.
Herbert listened intently, glancing between the capsule that resembled a work of art and staring intently at the handwritten booklet.
He felt that his medical knowledge, built up over half a lifetime, was being violently eroded and reshaped.
It evokes both the ecstasy of opening up a new world and the awe and fear of facing the unknown.
This is a perfectly normal phenomenon; the limited medical knowledge of the other world is indeed somewhat insufficient compared to the wisdom of 21st-century medical scientists...
"I'm giving all of these to you." Lynn pushed the capsule blister pack and saline solution in front of him, her tone solemn:
"You must learn all the knowledge in the booklet and find a way to teach it to Aidan. In the future, you can also choose kind-hearted and steady children to pass on the knowledge to."
Herbert shuddered, looking at the booklet and the miraculous medicine on the table, then at Lynn's trusting gaze, a surge of heat welled up from the bottom of his heart and spread throughout his body.
He took his son Aidan's hand, stepped back two paces, and this time, with utmost solemnity, bowed deeply to Lynn.
"We will certainly not disappoint your expectations, Lord!"
……
Lynn walked out of the Herbert's house with an air of indifference, as if he didn't recognize anyone.
When he handed over the exchanged items to Herbert, the latter gave Lynn a full 100 points of public opinion!
"Happy~ I guess I have a 'die-hard fan' now..." Lynn thought happily.
Just then, two figures jogged over from a distance. Upon closer inspection, Lynn recognized them as Elisa, Martha and Herbert's granddaughter.
The two stood frozen in front of Lynn. Martha, her face flushed, clutched her ever-thickening work points record book tightly and said urgently:
"My lord, I... I've found you! Work points! There's a problem with my work points!"
