Chapter 31 Arrives! Break the Formation!
The attack Lynn had anticipated didn't take long; Gavin Hossman finally carried it out.
Just as dawn was breaking, the bronze whistle of the lookout post to the north began to sound shrilly, one after another, so urgent that it made one's heart race with unease.
Upon hearing the whistle, Lynn practically sprang out of bed. When he rushed to the north wall, it was already crowded with people.
Leon stood in full armor, longsword in hand, his face grave. Beside him, Bray held a compound bow, his gaze sharp as he looked towards the northern wasteland.
On the horizon, a dark gray tide was slowly rolling in.
It's Viscount Gavin's army!
There were about 150 men on the other side, their infantry formations were very neat, with shield bearers in front and spearmen like a forest.
Besides Gavin's own men, there were also some soldiers borrowed from Earl Carl.
More than thirty cavalrymen patrolled back and forth on the flank, raising a cloud of dust. Among them were even a few low-ranking warriors.
In the center of the procession, Viscount Gavin's chestnut warhorse and gleaming breastplate stood out.
They stopped about four hundred paces from the wall, a distance that was full of arrogant probing.
Gavin waved, signaling his men to shout the message.
The cavalry captain rode out of formation and rode to a distance of 300 paces. This was beyond the range of an ordinary archer.
He reined in his horse, took a deep breath, and shouted in a loud but clearly impatient voice:
"Lord Lynn Cole of Grayrock Town! By order of Viscount Gavin of Ironstone Fortress: Immediately hand over the half-elf fugitive Lia and pay Ironstone Fortress five hundred Dawn Coins in damages to its reputation! Otherwise, Grayrock Town will be razed to the ground today, men, women, and children alike, without exception!"
The shouts echoed across the empty wilderness in the early morning, carrying a blatant threat.
On the wall, everyone's eyes were on Lynn.
Lynn glanced at the cavalryman who had shouted, then at Gavin, who sat arrogantly on horseback in the distance. He smiled, a hint of mockery in his expression.
He took two steps forward and placed his hand on the cold edge of the battlement.
"Go back and tell Viscount Gavin," Lynn's voice wasn't loud, but it was clear and firm: "First, there are no fugitives in Grayrock Town, only my subjects. Second, we have no money. We won't give them any people either. Third..."
He paused, his gaze sweeping over the distant, bustling military formation.
"If he wants to raze this place to the ground, let him try it himself!"
After saying that, Lynn looked at Gavin with disdain.
After the words were spoken, silence fell over the wall. The cavalrymen in the distance were taken aback, clearly not expecting such a strong response.
He turned to look in Gavin's direction.
Viscount Gavin's facial muscles twitched, then a sinister sneer appeared on his face. He hadn't expected Lynn to be so bold, but it suited him just the way he wanted it.
He raised his hand and waved it forward.
"charge!"
"Ugh—!"
The call to attack sounded.
The dark gray army began to move forward, their footsteps heavy and orderly. Shields reflected the morning light, and spears were laid flat, forming a moving wall of metal thorns that pressed down on the gray rock town.
"Archers, prepare!" Leon's roar echoed across the north wall: "Balloon teams, take your positions!"
The atmosphere on the wall instantly tensed. The militiamen gripped their spears tightly, their breathing heavy.
Bray and about 10 members of the hunting party had dispersed to key positions, steadily raising their composite bows.
However, just as the northern army advanced to about 250 paces—
Suddenly, from the direction of the eastern wall, came completely different shouts—chaotic and terrified cries!
Then came the piercing whistle of the brass whistle, and that familiar, teeth-grinding roar and scraping sound!
Monsters! And judging from the noise, there are quite a few of them!
"East Wall! A swarm of monsters has appeared on the East Wall! They're attacking!" A militiaman scrambled over from the east, his face ashen.
Lynn's heart sank.
East! Gavin actually lured the monsters to the east? He's trying to attack from both sides and spread out our defensive forces!
Where did he get the ability to control so many monsters? Lynn had a vague feeling that something was wrong; this didn't seem like a situation that a viscount could control.
But now is not the time to think about that, Lynn put aside his distracting thoughts.
"Leon, the north side is yours!" he decided immediately. "Bray, take a few men to the east wall! Quickly!"
Bray responded, pointed to four hunters, and turned to run towards the east wall. Lynn followed.
The scene outside the east wall was more horrifying than the previous attacks.
Thirty or forty monsters of various shapes and sizes were frantically ramming against the wall. Among them were two particularly large creatures covered in rough bone armor, which slammed their bodies against the wall with heavy, dull thuds. The wall was trembling slightly!
This means they intend to take down Lynn in one fell swoop!
Guarding this spot were Joel's newly formed refugee militia, who desperately stabbed downwards through the crenellations with spears, trying to push stones down, but with limited success. The monsters, oblivious to pain, charged relentlessly.
"Scatter! The hunting party is taking over!" The voice preceded the arrival of the men.
He and three members of the hunting party quickly took up positions at the top of the barricades, raised their bows, and aimed.
"Prioritize shooting the two larger ones that are hitting the wall!" Bray ordered. "The rest of you, fire freely, aim for the core!"
"Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Four composite bows fired simultaneously! Four black arrows pierced precisely into the relatively vulnerable joints and eye sockets of the two bone-armored monsters!
Amidst screams of agony, the two monsters froze, collapsed to the ground, and began to disintegrate.
The groundbreaking weapon once again proved its effectiveness. Combined with the hunters' professional skills, the second wave of arrows was launched almost without pause, heading straight for the other monsters.
Precise targeting quickly halted the monster horde's advance. The sturdiness of the concrete wall was now on full display; no matter how the monsters rammed and scratched it, aside from some white marks and scratches on the surface, the wall remained unmoved.
The militiamen on the wall felt much less pressured and their morale soared.
Lynn breathed a slight sigh of relief. The crisis in the east was temporarily under control. But in the north…
He suddenly turned his head to look towards the north wall.
Gavin's army has advanced to about 150 paces!
They had clearly heard the commotion to the east, and their advance even quickened, with cruel smiles appearing on the soldiers' faces.
It seems the lord's plan worked; the monsters have drawn the attention of the guards.
"Load the ballistae!" Leon roared. "Aim at the center of the shield wall! Fire!"
The thick tarpaulin that had been covering the middle section of the north wall was suddenly ripped off!
Under the sunlight, a sleek, triple-bow crossbow, exuding a chilling aura of killing intent, was fully exposed to everyone for the first time!
The black composite bow arms are stacked together, the metal parts gleaming coldly, the thick bowstring is taut, and a giant arrow, like a spear, lies quietly in the quiver.
In the Ironstone Fortress army formation, the soldiers in the front row saw the thing, their steps faltered, and their faces showed surprise and doubt.
"What is that thing?"
Before the soldiers could react, Leon's orders came one after another.
"put!"
The operator pressed down hard on the release lever.
"Bang——————!!!"
A terrifying, muffled roar, far exceeding that of an ordinary crossbow, shook the entire battlefield!
A dark shadow flashed by!
In the center of the advancing shield formation below, a heavy iron-clad oak shield, along with three soldiers standing close behind it, was torn apart and pierced by the violent force in an instant!
Shattered shield fragments, broken limbs, and a bloody mist mixed with internal organs exploded violently!
The massive arrow, still brimming with power and carrying terrifying kinetic energy, pierced through two more spearmen behind it before finally embedding itself deep in the ground, its fletching trembling violently!
A bloody, mangled passage was plowed out of the dense army formation!
Dead!
Everything happened in an instant. Before the advancing soldiers could react, a gap had already been torn in their ranks!
