Anti-Japanese War Espionage: I Have an Omniscient Perspective
Chapter 13: Unexpected Turn of Events, Team Leader Arrested
"Team leader, why don't you just stay in the pharmacy and not go out? I'll handle the usual tasks," Lin Rui offered a solution.
Old Zhou nodded: "That works too, let's do it this way for now. I'll go home to get some things, and I'll stay at the pharmacy from now on."
"I'll go with you," Lin Rui said.
"No need, just keep an eye on the pharmacy, I'll be right back."
After finishing his sentence, Lao Zhou got up and left the pharmacy.
Fang Dongcheng, using the pseudonym Lao Zhou, walked out of the pharmacy and chatted amiably with his neighbors as usual.
A dozen minutes later, he strolled outside his residence and was about to go up the stairs.
A greeting came from behind:
"Hello, Officer Fang."
Old Zhou froze for a moment, then realized that this was inappropriate, and immediately pretended not to care and prepared to walk up the stairs.
Two people came down the stairs of his residence and blocked his way.
Three more people stepped forward from behind, the one in the lead saying smugly:
"Officer Fang, it's you! I can't be mistaken. I saw you at the training center earlier this year."
Fang Dongcheng turned around and looked at the other person coldly.
"I don't think I know you. You must have mistaken me for someone else."
The man still had a smile on his face: "You must have a bad memory. How could you remember someone as insignificant as me? I work for the Imperial Army now, in the newly established Military Police Detective Unit. Officer Fang, you're a pragmatic person. Why don't you also surrender to the Imperial Army? Maybe the Japanese will appreciate you and give you a captain's position. At that time, I'll have to follow you."
"Really? Then I can consider it."
Fang Dongcheng smiled, and the other party was overjoyed.
Just then, Fang Dongcheng suddenly pulled out a small pistol and fired at the traitor who had surrendered to the Japanese.
The man reacted quickly, dodging the bullet, but was shot in the arm.
The other four men immediately pounced on Fang Dongcheng and pinned him to the ground.
...........
A short, piercing gunshot.
Lin Rui immediately became alert. Where could gunshots be coming from within the French Concession, especially since they sounded like they were coming from nearby?
His first thought was that something might have happened to Lao Zhou.
He immediately grabbed a bundle from under the counter and left through the back door, while simultaneously activating a three-dimensional perspective.
Without a vehicle, the field of vision is only 100 meters. Within this range, no suspicious activity has been detected.
Lin Rui did not relax, but instead turned directly into the deserted alley next to him.
There, he used the camouflage techniques he had learned at school to perform an emergency disguise.
Stuff two small dough balls into your mouth, close to your back teeth.
This changed his appearance. He then took off his servant's clothes, put on a clean long gown, and wore small round glasses.
They also took off their shoes and put on a pair of thick-soled cloth shoes.
He carefully wrapped up the items that had been replaced and threw them into the courtyard next door.
After dressing casually, Lin Rui's overall image and temperament changed drastically.
The once thin, street-smart guy now has a round face, and with his clothes and glasses, he looks quite refined.
He then walked out from the other side of the alley and appeared on the street 200 meters east of Huichuntang.
The streets here are full of people.
Everyone was watching.
Lin Rui also pretended to be curious and squeezed into the crowd to take a look.
He saw Fang Dongcheng being escorted, his face covered in bruises and blood, heading towards Huichuntang.
Some people in the crowd were talking about it.
"What's going on?"
"That's Manager Zhou, the owner of Huichuntang. I saw him for treatment just a few days ago. How did he get beaten up like this today?"
"I overheard a few words from the side. Those people work for the Japanese. Old Manager Zhou wasn't originally in this business; he was this..."
"What? Old Zhou is an official! Then his colleagues are too."
"Isn't it heading that way?"
"I wonder if that kid ran away or not."
"Oh, the police are here."
Lin Rui looked over.
Five black-clad policemen wielding short batons pushed through the crowd. The lead officer, his face grim, slapped the shoulder of the man holding Fang Dongcheng, his tone arrogant and domineering: "Stand still! What gang are you from? This is no place for you to cause trouble in the French Concession. Openly disrupting public order, all of you come with me to the police station!"
The traitor, shot in the arm, winced in pain, pushed away the policeman's hand, pulled out a black badge from his pocket, waved it, and raised his voice: "Officer, look carefully! We are the Imperial Army Military Police Detective Team, ordered to arrest anti-Japanese elements. This matter is under the jurisdiction of the Imperial Army, and it's none of your French Concession's business!"
The lead constable glanced at the insignia and the words "Military Police Detective Team" on the identification document. His previously stern expression froze instantly, his eyes flickered, and his previously tense lips immediately relaxed. His attitude underwent a complete 180-degree turn, even his voice softened considerably: "So it's...so it's you. It's a misunderstanding, all a misunderstanding." He quickly turned and scolded the constables behind him, "What are you all standing there for? Get out of the way!"
The stark contrast in their behavior caused an uproar among the onlookers. A burly man in shorts clenched his fists, his face flushed with anger, and couldn't help but shout, "What kind of damn police are they! Seeing traitors arresting people in the concession, they've lost all their former arrogance. They're all just cowards who bully the weak and fear the strong!"
"That's right! These traitors and lackeys help the Japanese devils harm Chinese people; they deserve to die a horrible death!" The elderly woman wiped away her tears, her voice filled with grief and indignation. "Is there no one in this world who can control them?"
For three months, the Japanese army's relentless bombing has caused countless families to be displaced and many to die in the war. Now, witnessing the atrocities committed by traitors, the people's pent-up resentment has finally erupted.
This angry outburst acted as a fuse, instantly igniting everyone's emotions.
Some people picked up stones and rotten vegetable leaves from the roadside and threw them at the traitors. Others rolled up their sleeves and were about to rush forward, shouting "Kill these traitors!" and "Drive them out of the concession!" The scene immediately became chaotic.
Upon seeing this, the leading constable's face changed drastically. He quickly led his men to block the traitor, brandishing a short baton and shouting at the crowd, "Back off! No rioting! If you charge forward again, don't blame us for being impolite!" While restraining the angry crowd, he winked at one of the constables beside him, "Quick, go get more men! Bring more brothers over!"
The police officer immediately turned around and ran towards the police station.
Before long, a dozen or so police officers dressed in the same black clothes, carrying short sticks and even armed with pistols, rushed over and quickly formed a human wall between the traitors and the crowd.
They all had serious expressions and were staring intently at the people, completely unlike the cowardice they had shown when facing traitors and spies.
The traitor, shot in the arm, hid behind the police officers, glanced triumphantly at the crowd, then winked at his accomplice beside him, before looking at the leading officer: "Officer, could you please send a few men with us to Huichuntang ahead? The anti-Japanese element's accomplice might still be in the pharmacy; we need to search it."
