Anti-Japanese War Espionage: I Have an Omniscient Perspective
Chapter 37 Following Zhou Zhitang to Confirm His Safety
Lin Rui bid farewell to Zhou Zhitang and closed the door.
He glanced around, walked out of the alley, and instead of returning to the film studio or going far, he walked briskly along the alley, making two turns before arriving at the safe house at the entrance of Danshui Road, that small stilted house.
This safe house is within 100 meters in diameter of the room where Zhou Zhitang is staying, and can be monitored using supernatural abilities.
After closing the door to the safe house, Lin Rui leaned against the cold wall, closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and activated his three-dimensional perspective ability.
In an instant, the scene before him unfolded in the form of a three-dimensional light screen, and the situation inside the Shikumen side room where Zhou Zhitang had landed was clearly imprinted in his mind, as if he were standing in the room himself.
He saw Zhou Zhitang lying on the bed, legs crossed, left hand on the back of his head, right hand stroking his chin, as if he was thinking about something.
After a while, Zhou Zhitang stood up, walked to the window, and cautiously peered out through the cracks in the paper window.
After watching for a while, he picked up the gray felt hat and black umbrella from the corner of the wall, put the hat back on, held the umbrella, slowly unlatched the door, and walked out of the room.
Lin Rui's gaze was fixed on Zhou Zhitang's figure as he slowly walked out of the alley and turned onto Lüban Road.
He then opened the door and followed.
To avoid being discovered, he used a three-dimensional perspective to follow along small paths, and he wasn't afraid of being discovered or tracked.
Zhou Zhitang did not rush to his destination. Instead, he slowed down and pretended to stroll around. He would stop from time to time to look at the shops on the street, buy a newspaper, and flip through it. In fact, he kept glancing behind him out of the corner of his eye, obviously on guard.
After a while, once he was sure it was safe, he quickened his pace.
Meanwhile, Lin Rui was also speeding up inside the alley, weaving through the lanes, and managed not to be shaken off by Zhou Zhitang.
Zhou Zhitang then walked to the edge of the new French Concession, where the alleys were narrower and the residents were more scattered, mostly foreign merchants and refugees, making it relatively secluded and less likely to attract attention.
When Zhou Zhitang reached the entrance of an inconspicuous old alley, he stopped, looked around, then walked in, knocked on the door of a house, and slipped inside.
Lin Rui was observing the situation in the room from the alleyway across the street using his supernatural abilities.
Besides Zhou Zhitang, there were six other men in the room, all dressed in ordinary short jackets or long gowns, with sharp eyes. They spoke respectfully, "Captain Zhou!"
Zhou Zhitang nodded slightly. "Come with me, let's get the good stuff."
Immediately, the seven people went out, ventured deep into the alley, and stopped in front of a dilapidated courtyard.
He raised his hand and gently knocked on the door. The door was quickly opened a crack, and a middle-aged man wearing a long robe and glasses peeked out. When he saw Zhou Zhitang and the others, a hint of wariness flashed in his eyes. He then quickly opened the door, letting everyone slip inside, while he stood at the doorway, cautiously observing the movements outside the alley. After confirming that no one was following him, he closed the door and bolted it.
Lin Rui appeared at the alley entrance after they entered.
With his supernatural vision, he could see through the door and clearly see the scene inside the room:
The room was small and simply furnished, with a wooden square table, a few chairs, and some books and miscellaneous items piled up in the corner.
A middle-aged woman dressed in a cloth shirt was standing by the stove. When she saw Zhou Zhitang and the others come in, she quickly came to greet them with a concerned expression.
"Old Zhou, you've finally arrived! Old Chen and I have been waiting for you to come and collect our things every day for the past few days." The woman's voice was low and tinged with urgency.
The middle-aged man called Old Chen was the one who opened the door. He adjusted his glasses and said in a deep voice, "Captain Zhou, don't worry. I've hidden everything you had the postman deliver. No one has found it. I put it under the study floor, covered with a wooden board, and piled some old books on top. It's very well hidden."
Following his words, Lin Rui shifted his gaze and indeed saw a thick stack of old books piled up in a corner of the study. The floor beneath the books was loose, indicating something was underneath, but he couldn't make out what it was.
Zhou Zhitang breathed a sigh of relief and patted Old Chen on the shoulder: "Thank you for your hard work."
"Look at what you're saying, this is something we Chinese should do. Old Zhou, please sit down. We haven't seen each other in a long time, how about we chat?"
"OK."
Zhou Zhitang had his men wait in the outer room while he and Old Chen reminisced.
The two talked about many past events, which allowed Lin Rui, who was eavesdropping, to learn more about Zhou Zhitang's identity.
This man is no ordinary person. He was originally a teacher, but later became a principal. Old Chen was the director of the academic affairs office at his school.
Later, Zhou Zhitang abandoned his studies to join the army, becoming the police chief. During the war, he also joined a special operations unit to fight against the Japanese army.
Judging from his background, he can be considered a remarkable person, no wonder he was given an important position by the Special Service as an action team leader.
After chatting for a while...
Old Chen brought the topic back to what those things were: "Old Zhou, those things are too conspicuous. We're hiding them very carefully, for fear of being discovered by the police or the Japanese. If something happens, we're not afraid of suffering the consequences ourselves, but we're afraid of delaying Captain Zhou's important business."
"I understand your concerns." Zhou Zhitang nodded, his tone serious. "We're here to take those things. We received orders from headquarters to carry out an important anti-espionage mission. Those things are our confidence." He then looked at his six subordinates. "You two, go to the study to get them. Be quiet and careful, and don't make a fuss."
"Yes!" the six men responded in unison. Two men followed Old Chen to the study, while the remaining four were scattered around the door and windows, vigilantly observing the surroundings.
Lin Rui's gaze was fixed on the study, watching Old Chen and his two men carefully move aside the old books in the corner, lift the wooden board underneath to reveal a dark opening—inside were twenty-five pistols neatly stacked, their barrels gleaming and still coated with gun oil, clearly brand new and unused. The two men crouched down, carefully took the pistols out of the opening, wrapped them in pre-prepared black cloths, and carried them out in two bundles.
"Captain, they've all been taken out."
Zhou Zhitang opened a bundle and inspected the pistol. Confirming it was intact, he nodded in satisfaction: "Very good. Old Chen, thank you so much this time. I'll come see you again when I have time. Also, please be careful during this time, and try not to go out to avoid arousing suspicion. If you encounter any trouble, contact my men as we agreed beforehand."
"Don't worry, Captain Zhou, we know what to do." Old Chen's wife brought over several bowls of water and handed them to everyone. "You must be extra careful while you're on your mission. Those traitors and Japanese are ruthless, so don't be careless."
Zhou Zhitang took the water, drank a sip, cupped his hands in greeting to the couple, signaled his men to carry the weapons bundles, quietly opened the door, and after confirming once again that there was nothing unusual outside the alley, walked towards the main road.
Lin Rui emerged from the shadows long after they had left.
It's now basically certain that Zhou Zhitang is out of trouble.
