Anti-Japanese War Espionage: I Have an Omniscient Perspective
Chapter 65 Backup Outpost No. 2, Station Master's Inquiry
The undercover agents at Shanghai Station hastily evacuated, but narrowly escaped the Japanese search.
But for Lin Rui and Team Leader Li, the situation at the station is still unknown.
As a result, Team Leader Li paced back and forth in the film studio office, anxious and uneasy.
He stopped and looked at Lin Rui, who had just returned from outside: "Are you sure you've relayed the warning to the station?"
"I can't be sure about that, since I always cover my head when I go to the station. The person who went to deliver the message was a clerk from Yangming Clothing Store," Lin Rui replied.
"Oh dear, this is driving me crazy!" Team Leader Li was completely flustered at this point.
Lin Rui didn't say anything. He felt that the station should have retreated, but as a subordinate, there was no need to say anything and embarrass Team Leader Li.
After a while, Chen Shan came up to report: "A shop assistant from Yangming Clothing and Hats Shop came downstairs, saying he wanted to show you some prop costume samples."
"Understood, bring him up," Lin Rui said.
Team Leader Li looked around: "Is there anywhere to hide someone in your office?"
Lin Rui pulled back the curtain at the back of the office. "This is where I sleep."
Team Leader Li slipped inside and pulled the curtain closed.
Before long, the shop assistant from Yangming Clothing and Hats Store was led up.
Lin Rui asked, "Where are the samples?"
The shop assistant opened the bundle and took out the ready-made clothes inside.
Then, he sent Chen Shan out, pretending to look at the samples.
After Chen Shan left, the clerk whispered, "Pass on the station chief's order: you and Team Leader Li must immediately proceed to backup outpost number 2."
After saying that, he left without revealing his exact location.
After the waiter left, Team Leader Li pulled back the curtain and came out.
His expression relaxed considerably: "It seems everything's alright at the station. I know where backup outpost number 2 is. Let's go, I'll take you there."
Lin Rui nodded, gave a brief explanation to his team members, and then left with Team Leader Li.
The two walked south from Belle Road, past the intersection of Avenue Joffre, and continued south until they reached Lafayette Road.
This road runs parallel to Avenue Joffre, but it is not as bustling as Avenue Joffre.
Lin Rui has been traveling around a lot lately and has gotten to know the area.
The eastern section consists of old-style hutongs and shikumen alleyways, mainly inhabited by middle-class office workers and small business owners. There are small shops, teahouses, and clinics along the street.
The middle section is a mix of upscale apartments and modern lane houses, including residential complexes such as Fuxingfang, Garden Lane, Jin Yaerpe Apartments, and Blackstone Apartments.
The western section is a garden villa area, inhabited by French businessmen, wealthy Jewish merchants, families of Kuomintang generals, and comprador tycoons.
Where will Shanghai Station's second backup base be located?
Team Leader Li crossed the intersection, turned left, and entered an alleyway not far away.
That place is Fuxingfang, which consists of more than 90 three-story brick and wood buildings. It is considered a mid-range residential area in the concession. There are security guards outside, so the security is good.
I never expected that Outpost 2 would be located here.
The security guards at the entrance of Fuxingfang were also his own people. After seeing Team Leader Li, they did not question him and let him pass directly.
The two entered Fuxingfang and were led by Team Leader Li to Building No. 16.
Two plainclothes agents, seemingly chatting idly, were on watch at the entrance of the small building. After checking the code with Lin Rui and Team Leader Li, they allowed them to go upstairs.
As soon as he entered, someone from the intelligence station came over and spoke to Team Leader Li: "Old Li, go up to the third floor, the station chief is waiting for you, hurry up."
Team Leader Li nodded, rolled up the hem of his long gown, and quickened his pace upstairs, with Lin Rui following closely behind.
The two went up to the third floor and entered the stationmaster's room.
Inside the room, Station Chief Zhou sat at the table, his brow furrowed, a cigarette dangling from his hand, its ash already quite thick.
Upon seeing the two enter, he immediately stood up, a look of relief on his face: "Old Li, thank goodness you reminded me in time, it's truly a stroke of luck!"
"Station chief, I almost got caught too." Team leader Li looked terrified. "This time, I'm so grateful to Lin Rui. If it weren't for his timely warning, I would have been in deep trouble as well."
Station Master Zhou waved his hand, gesturing for the two to sit down. His gaze fell on Lin Rui, full of praise: "Lin Rui, you did a great job. You were extremely alert and reacted quickly. You deserve much credit for protecting the main force of the Shanghai station this time. Tell me, what exactly happened?"
Lin Rui replied methodically.
"This morning, I was heading to the liaison point to report a new development in our group's activities. As I approached the liaison point, I observed my surroundings and noticed some people watching the stationery store across the street. I immediately became alert and walked over. When I reached them, I found several others also acting as lookouts. I realized something was wrong and couldn't enter the liaison point to warn them. I could only continue walking, intending to leave and try to report back to the station. After walking about 300 meters, I saw Team Leader Li and greeted him, warning him. We returned to Lianhua Film Studio, and Team Leader Li gave me new contact information. I then went to Yangming Clothing Store to have them report the emergency."
Lin Rui removed the part about observing supernatural abilities from his own situation and explained it in detail, also taking the opportunity to report Su Wan and his cousin's situation directly to the station chief.
Team Leader Li added, "In the morning, I was on my way to the liaison point to check on the work situation when I ran into Lin Rui. Luckily, he stopped me, which saved me from a disaster."
After listening to what the two had to say, the stationmaster understood what had happened.
He looked at Team Leader Li: "Old Li, what do you think is going on here? Could there be a mole within the station?"
"No, if it's an inside man, neither you nor I will escape. I think it's Fang Dongcheng."
Station Chief Zhou slammed his fist on the table, his voice filled with rage: "That bastard Fang Dongcheng! I never expected him to be such a coward, betraying us and betraying us to the Japanese!" After his anger subsided slightly, he looked at Lin Rui, his tone much gentler: "Thank goodness for you, otherwise we would have been doomed this time."
Then, Station Chief Zhou said solemnly, "I have arranged for the station's personnel to go to various backup locations to hide. As for you, Lin Rui, you stay here for now. According to station rules, we need to verify your identity."
Lin Rui was puzzled, but still respectfully replied, "Yes, stationmaster."
Time passed slowly, and the sky gradually darkened.
Lin Rui was sitting in his room sorting out his thoughts when a secret agent knocked on the door and came in, telling him to go to the station chief's room.
Lin Rui got up and went out to the station chief's room. He saw that Station Chief Zhou's face was still gloomy, and there was a piece of intelligence on the table.
"Lin Rui, sit down." Station Chief Zhou pointed to the chair opposite him and got straight to the point. "The matter has been investigated and clarified. The exposure of the liaison point this time was indeed due to Fang Dongcheng's betrayal. After being captured by the Japanese, he could not withstand the severe torture and not only betrayed the liaison point of Dafang Stationery Store, but also found the location of our new liaison point. If you hadn't reported it in time, the consequences would have been unimaginable."
Lin Rui feigned surprise, his tone indignant: "This traitor truly deserves to die!"
