Zhao Shanhe stepped into the warehouse.
There were already two rows of people standing inside, including Lao Xu, Ma Jianmin, Zhu Zi, and the twenty or so key members who had just received their money. They were all waiting there quietly.
Dozens of eyes swept towards the doorway and saw Liang Jiajun limping in, his designer wool coat still covered in wet coal dust.
Zhu Zi, with his sharp eyes, noticed the disheveled state of half of his body. He grinned, almost bursting out laughing, and quickly wiped his face with the back of his hand.
The strong smell of engine oil and the chill in the warehouse made Liang Jiajun want to take out his handkerchief, but when he saw the rough men staring at him, his hand, which had just been pulled out of the mud, froze in his pocket, and he didn't dare to take it out.
His mud-covered leather shoes left a trail of glaring black marks on the dry, cold cement floor, each step seeming to pound into the hearts of the people at the Red Star Factory.
Zhao Shanhe walked up to the few iron lumps covered with red cloth and suddenly yanked them.
The red cloth fell down, revealing the gleaming metal bodies underneath. Several West German-made machines gleamed with a cold, hard light under the dim warehouse lights.
"Mr. Liang, the item is right here."
Liang Jiajun's anger hadn't completely subsided, but when he actually scanned those machines from beginning to end, his eyes involuntarily narrowed for a moment.
He took two steps forward, first looking at the machine body, then looking down at the base and transmission mechanism, and finally reaching out to touch the edge of the frontmost unit. His expression finally calmed down.
After a long pause, he casually remarked, "The machine is quite good, a genuine German product. Your government must have spent a lot of money to buy it."
Liang Tiejun stood behind, smiling obsequiously.
"Yes, these precious machines were specially requested by Director Li from the Ministry with special foreign exchange, and they were transported back from West Germany after overcoming numerous obstacles. The future of the Red Star Factory depends entirely on them."
Liang Jiajun walked around the machine again, his tone still carrying that condescending and critical air.
"German products are German products after all. Whether it's the workmanship or the method, they are incomparable to ordinary machines."
"This kind of equipment wouldn't be considered bad even in a European factory."
As he said this, his gaze swept over the twenty or so people standing in the warehouse, and the corner of his mouth twitched slightly: "It's just a bit of a waste to keep it here with you guys."
As soon as those words were spoken, the faces of the people in the warehouse instantly darkened.
Wang Daikui rolled his eyes, about to retort, but Liang Tiejun had already taken the lead and given Liang Jiajun a thumbs up.
"Mr. Liang is truly an expert; he recognized the true value of this treasure at a glance. A good horse needs a good saddle; these machines are indeed a match for someone of your talent, otherwise it would be a waste of a gem."
Liang Tiejun moved forward a little.
"Director Li repeatedly emphasized that whether Hongxing Factory can successfully transform depends entirely on your guidance, Mr. Liang. As long as you're willing to give us a hand, as long as you can get these foreign machines running, you'll be our teacher in this small corner of Hongxing Factory. If any of these rascals dare to disobey my teachings, just say the word, and I'll be the first to not let them off the hook."
Liang Jiajun nodded approvingly, the coldness on his face lessening considerably.
"Operating it isn't difficult. The difficulty with this kind of equipment isn't turning it on, but adjusting it, maintaining it, and figuring out how to use it properly. To really do it, it's not enough to just stand here and look at it or say a few words."
As he said this, he raised his hand and gently patted the body of the machine.
Upon hearing this, Liang Tiejun quickly followed up with a smile: "Mr. Liang, when do you think we can start training people? Our team is all here, and we'll be waiting for your instructions on how to learn and get started."
Liang Jiajun did not answer immediately, but slowly withdrew his hand from the machine.
"The day after tomorrow."
As soon as those two words were uttered, the expressions of the twenty or so people in the warehouse all shifted slightly.
Liang Tiejun was also taken aback: "The day after tomorrow?"
Liang Jiajun nodded, his tone flat, as if he were saying something perfectly natural: "Tomorrow is Sunday, I'm going to church."
The warehouse fell silent for a moment after those words were spoken.
Zhu Zi blinked, clearly not understanding what "Wednesday" meant, while Wang Dai Kui subconsciously frowned, his face full of bewilderment.
The assistant quickly chimed in, explaining with a tone of nonchalance, "Mr. Leung is a devout Christian, baptized in France and certified by the church. In Hong Kong, even if the Governor is hosting a dinner, Sundays still require Mr. Leung to make time for church. It's a baptism of the soul, a time to converse with God."
Wang Daikui snorted softly and muttered under his breath, "The machine is right here waiting, and he's already bowing down to it."
Old Chen didn't reply, but just pursed his lips even tighter.
Liang Tiejun's smile froze a little, but he still managed to salvage the situation: "That's fine then. We'll officially start the business the day after tomorrow. Mr. Liang, you must be tired from your journey and have seen the machinery. Go have a hot meal first, and then rest."
Before he could finish speaking, Liang Jiajun looked down at the half-dried mud stain on his coat and immediately frowned.
He raised his eyes, glanced at Zhao Shanhe, and his tone became serious again.
"I'll skip the meal. I can't get used to the food from mainland China."
The assistant immediately added, "Mr. Liang is a true gentleman. He studied in France from a young age and graduated from the famous Sorbonne University. He has a rather delicate stomach."
Liang Tiejun's smile grew increasingly stiff, and he could only force a response: "Then...then I'll go find you a chef who can cook Western food..."
Where do I live?
Liang Jiajun didn't respond to his question, but asked directly, "I don't want to stay at the county guesthouse. It's too noisy with people coming and going, I can't stand it. I'll stay at a hotel in the city, and I'll trouble you to cover the expenses."
Liang Tiejun's face froze: "The city is dozens of kilometers away from here, and it's not very convenient to travel there. This trip takes two hours..."
"I don't care, that's your problem to consider. If you don't meet my requirements, I'll terminate the contract."
The warehouse was deathly silent.
Liang Tiejun was silent for a moment, glanced at the dozen or so machines, and finally gritted his teeth and waved: "Okay. Xiao Wang."
A young man jogged out: "Yes, factory manager."
"From now on, you will be responsible for picking up Mr. Liang from the city at five o'clock every morning."
Xiao Wang glanced at Liang Jiajun, then at Liang Tiejun, and could only nod in agreement, "Okay, I'll get up earlier from now on."
Seeing that all his demands had been met, Liang Jiajun glanced coldly at Zhao Shanhe, then looked down at his own coat with disgust, snorted, and turned to leave the warehouse with his assistant.
