Chapter 31 Adventurers
The group made their way up to the eighth floor.
The monsters here are significantly stronger, and Hilichurls no longer appear in scattered groups, but rather in small groups.
In a spacious cave, the three had just dealt with the last stubborn Rock Shield Hilichurls and were preparing to catch their breath.
"Ah—! Help!"
A piercing scream and a cry for help suddenly came from the depths of the passage not far away.
Fen Yu's brows furrowed instantly.
Robin and Tifa immediately stopped what they were doing and turned to him with questioning eyes.
In the past few days in the dungeon, they had encountered other adventurer teams, but everyone tacitly kept their distance and did not interfere with each other.
This is the first time I've encountered a distress signal.
Seeing the hint of reluctance and hesitation flash in the robin's clear eyes, Fenyu understood her thoughts.
He smiled and said, "Let's go take a look. After all, we are the 'Family of Justice.' We should help if we can. It will also benefit our reputation as a family in the future."
He knew very well that the robin beside him and Tifa, who had just joined, were both kind-hearted people.
It would be difficult to ask them to ignore the cries for help that were right next to them.
Fortunately, their kindness was not blind; they would consult the group leader's opinion before taking any action.
This is truly reassuring.
Fen Yu detests that kind of kindness that is indiscriminate and reckless, because such kindness only harms both oneself and others.
He doesn't mind helping others as long as it doesn't endanger his own safety.
Upon receiving the instruction, the three immediately sped off in the direction from which the sound came.
They arrived at the scene quickly.
The scene before them made Robin and Tifa turn their heads away, their faces showing reluctance.
The scene resembled a slaughterhouse.
Limbs and severed bodies were scattered all over the ground, and dark red blood stained the ground. Several adventurers' corpses lay mangled in pools of blood.
In the middle of the field, a blood-covered male human adventurer was clinging tightly to a dog-woman, desperately dodging the fierce charge of a charging Hilichurl.
There was even an arrow from a Rocket Hilichurl stuck in his back.
Upon seeing Fen Yu and his companions, the male adventurer seemed to see a glimmer of hope and shouted with all his might, "Fen Yu, save us!"
Fen Yu was taken aback before recognizing that the disheveled man was Luke, one of the friends he had met at the tavern.
Without the slightest hesitation.
"Gospel."
With a short incantation, Fenyu unleashed an invisible sonic barrage that struck the charging Hilichurl chasing Luke like a cannonball.
The monster didn't even have time to utter a scream before it was blasted into a cloud of blood mist by the terrifying sound waves.
Tifa.
Fen Yu spoke again.
Upon hearing the call, Tifa instantly understood.
Her figure transformed into a black afterimage, brushing past Luke who was rushing towards them, and heading straight for the monster horde composed of Rocket Hilichurls and various slimes behind them.
"Luke, what happened?"
Fen Yu stepped forward and caught his friend who was about to collapse from exhaustion.
The robin immediately took out a healing potion, wanting to save the dog-woman girl who was being tightly protected in Luke's arms.
But her hand stopped abruptly just as she reached out.
She discovered that the girl's chest had stopped rising and falling, and she had completely stopped breathing.
"Please...please save her..." Luke pleaded with the robin in a trembling voice.
A look of sadness crossed the robin's face, and she gently shook her head: "I'm sorry, she's already..."
Luke was struck dumb, collapsing to his knees in shock, still clutching the already cold body tightly in his arms.
After a long while, he slowly raised his head, his bloodshot eyes fixed on Fen Yu, and cried out in a hoarse voice, "Fen Yu, please! Avenge me!"
Adventurers enter dungeons for profit and to become stronger, already prepared for death, and have no right to blame the monsters.
They hunt monsters, and monsters hunt them in return; it is their destiny.
But the hatred will not be reduced in the slightest.
Faced with the tearful pleas of an acquaintance, Fen Yu remained silent for a moment.
He drew his longsword from his waist and, in a calm yet weighty voice, uttered only one word:
"it is good."
As soon as he finished speaking, he turned around and joined Tifa, rushing into the monster horde.
Sword flashes and fist shadows clashed, and a ruthless massacre ensued.
Not long after, the two men wiped out the monster group that had nearly wiped out Luke's squad.
The robin healed Luke's injuries, but he just knelt there blankly, holding the girl's body in his arms, his eyes filled with death.
The robin sighed beside him, but didn't know how to comfort him.
The pain of losing a companion you've spent every day with is beyond words.
The battle was over, but the lingering stench of blood in the air, mixed with the smell of earth and moss, created a nauseating rusty odor.
Burning Feather, Robin, and Tifa silently helped Luke wrap his companion's mangled body in rough linen, the kind of cloth adventurers often use.
Every movement seemed exceptionally heavy, as if each touch was a reminder of the fragility of their lives.
Afterwards, they escorted the distraught Luke out of the dungeon and back into the sunlight above ground.
As they carried the corpse, soaked in dark red blood, out of the entrance to the Tower of Babel, the guild member in charge of registration merely glanced at it, his face expressionless, and simply crossed out another name from the register.
They've become numb.
They've seen too many vibrant faces walk in excitedly, only to never return.
At first, they would chat with familiar adventurers, joke with each other, and wish each other a successful journey.
But afterwards, they dared not have any further contact with the adventurers.
Because they don't know if the person who is smiling and greeting you today will become a cold corpse tomorrow, or even not be able to come back at all.
Every extra interaction may only add unnecessary pain in the future.
Other adventurers passing by were used to it, glancing at it briefly before hurrying on, their eyes filled with indifferent familiarity.
Being able to return with the body of their companion was already a stroke of luck amidst misfortune.
Most adventurers who die in dungeons die silently, ultimately swallowed up by the dungeon without leaving a single bone behind.
With the help of guild members, Luke's companions were buried in the first cemetery outside Orario.
