America 1929: John F. Kennedy, the Great Writer

Chapter 18 Who are you threatening?

"Mayor, Mr. Silas is gone, but his self-deceptive mentality of mental victory lives on. It's the kind of self-deception that as long as you shut up those who are crying out in pain, the world will be at peace."

"He and his friends always felt that as long as they pretended not to hear, the problem would disappear."

"But they don't understand, or rather, they don't want to understand. This self-righteous silence is not a victory; it's just blinding themselves to the storm and pretending it will never come."

The banquet hall was deathly silent. The celebrities looked at each other in disbelief, all shocked by Arthur's outrageous statement.

Mayor Walker's face had turned from pale to purple, and he was trembling with rage.

His finger trembled as he pointed at Arthur on the podium and shouted hysterically:

"Take him away! Break his legs! Throw him into the Hudson River to feed the fish! Nobody in this city can humiliate me like this! Nobody!"

Two burly security guards immediately rushed to the podium.

Just as the security guards were about to grab Arthur, the two heavy oak doors of the banquet hall suddenly creaked open.

Two personal servants in black uniforms suddenly pushed open the door.

"A very good speech, which reminded me of some old friends, Mr. Arthur Kennedy."

An elegant, deep, and authoritative female voice entered with the sound of steady footsteps.

Everyone present turned their heads in unison.

A middle-aged woman wearing a black velvet evening gown slowly walked into the venue.

She wore no extravagant jewelry, only a string of round, full-moon-like South Sea pearls, yet this attire gave her an aura of majesty that made people afraid to look directly at her.

The two security guards who were rushing towards Arthur froze on the spot the moment they saw who it was, even their breathing became cautious.

The ferocity on Jimmy Walker's face crumbled into a comical expression the moment he saw the other person's face, a mixture of fear, humility, and helplessness.

The glass in his hand swayed violently, and a few drops of champagne splashed onto his bespoke suit.

"Ms. Elizabeth?"

Walker's voice trembled violently, sounding more like a petty thief caught stealing candy than a mayor.

"You... why would you personally attend such an informal dinner?"

The person who arrived was Elizabeth Harrison Walker.

All the celebrities in the room stood up at that moment, and the air was filled with suppressed gasps. Everyone was shocked.

The identity of the person who came deserves everyone present to stand up and pay their respects.

She is a direct descendant of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence.

She is the biological daughter of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States.

She is a key figure in the New York and Indiana Bar Associations and the niece of the current Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Although she is sometimes referred to as Ms. Walker because of her husband's surname, she has absolutely no relation to the Jimmy Walker on stage.

In New York, even the most ruthless mob bosses would obediently take off their hats upon hearing this name.

Elizabeth completely ignored Jimmy Walker.

She walked straight to the main table in front of the podium.

Jimmy Walker's men retreated, not daring to meet her gaze.

Elizabeth gently took Isabella's small hand in hers; the hand was both cold and sweaty.

"Isabella, my darling niece."

Elizabeth took a handkerchief out of her bag and gently wiped away the girl's tears, her eyes filled with heartache.

"You did a fantastic job. The cases and legal provisions you just cited may have sounded a bit dry, but that's how the Harrison family should be."

Then, she slowly turned her head.

Those sharp eyes were like two cold, gleaming swords, piercing straight at Jimmy Walker, who was slumped in the main seat.

"Jimmy, who did you just say you were going to kick out?"

Walker broke out in a cold sweat that instantly trickled down his temples.

He tried to stand up, but his legs were as weak as noodles and wouldn't obey him at all.

"This...this is actually your niece?"

Walker felt his brain explode instantly; the dizziness of being struck by lightning made it almost impossible for him to breathe.

Who exactly did he humiliate just now?

Elizabeth's niece is also a legitimate descendant of the Harrison family.

Neither the descendants of the 9th President William Harrison nor the relatives of President Hoover's mentor, the 23rd President Benjamin Harrison, were people he could afford to offend.

He actually compared the descendant of a former president and the relative of the Chief Justice to a little sparrow who went to dance on Broadway in front of all the celebrities in New York.

"Elizabeth...this...this is a huge misunderstanding."

Walker forced out a smile that looked worse than death.

He still wanted to stand up, but it took him two tries to barely manage to get up by supporting himself on the table.

During this time, his knee slammed heavily against the edge of the table with a dull thud, but he seemed oblivious to the pain.

"I really didn't know this young lady was your relative. I always thought she was just an ordinary friend of Mr. Kennedy..."

"Of course you don't know. Because in your eyes, ordinary people who don't wear designer brands or have money are just ants that you can crush at will."

Elizabeth snorted coldly.

She turned to look at Arthur, who stood calmly to the side, and a deep sense of admiration appeared in her eyes.

"Mr. Kennedy, it seems your personal charisma is even better than your speech, that my niece overcame her fear to speak for you."

She turned back to face the audience, her gaze slowly sweeping over the faces that were either shocked or terrified.

Those celebrities who were just laughing and joking with Walker now all lowered their heads.

"From today onwards, all of Arthur Kennedy's legal counsel work will be handled entirely by my personal office."

Jimmy.

She addressed the mayor by his first name, her tone full of contempt.

"If you want to mess with Mr. Arthur, or play legal games with me, remember to send the subpoena to my legal team first. I look forward to hearing your opinions from the Supreme Court."

Walker slumped back into his chair.

He knew he hadn't just kicked a brick wall, but a mountain built on the foundation of the United States, one that was impossible to move.

"Let's go, children."

Elizabeth took Isabella's arm and gestured for Arthur to follow.

Arthur casually straightened his dark blue suit and nodded slightly to the distraught mayor in the main seat.

He moved with such ease, as if he wasn't the one who had almost been thrown into the river.

"Mayor, thank you for your hospitality. In closing, I would like to say that the most remarkable detail tonight proves one thing: in this city that is pretending to be asleep, those who remain awake are not alone."
