America: Starting with the Last Liberty
Chapter 21 Using Public Office for Personal Revenge
"Sir! Something's happened again!"
"What happened?"
"The signal you provided has suddenly disappeared from the map!"
"disappear?"
Vincent immediately looked at the map of northern Los Angeles on his laptop screen, and the red dot representing Donnie's location had indeed disappeared.
"What's going on? Is there a cave over there?"
A locator is essentially a device that emits signals at regular intervals, so it can be physically interfered with in places where the signals cannot penetrate.
For example, caves, tunnels, or deep basements.
"Sir, there couldn't possibly be a cave or tunnel over there. I suspect they've entered some kind of basement."
"That's possible. Immediately pinpoint the location of the signal and speed things up!"
Several armored vehicles sped toward the signal's location, Vincent cursing under his breath.
If Donnie had sent the message earlier, Vincent wouldn't have needed to rush.
The risks of this case have now become enormous, and Vincent has already placed all the blame on Donnie.
However, after a few minutes, the locator signal on the map was restored and appeared in another area.
"What's going on?"
Vincent stared wide-eyed at the map on his laptop.
The red dot signal is still moving, which overturns the previous speculation.
"I...I don't know!"
Vincent had a vague feeling that something was wrong, but without any other clues, he could only continue to follow the signal.
Finally, the signal stopped at the northern foot of Mount San Antonio.
When the SWAT team arrived at the location of the signal, all they saw was a mountain bike race in progress, along with a large number of tourists and media personnel.
"Damn it! Seal off the area and stop the match!"
Vincent knew he had most likely been tricked by Donnie, and he was unwilling to let the case end there, so he issued a lockdown order.
"Sir, stopping the match will definitely raise questions from the media!"
Vincent's eyes were bloodshot, he was clearly intoxicated, and he grabbed his subordinate by the collar.
"Only this way can we possibly find clues! Do you want those guys to get away with it? Stop the game!"
The officers had no choice but to stop the game and cordon off the area.
In fact, the sudden arrival of SWAT had already puzzled some people at the scene, and some audience members or media had already entered a state of watching the drama unfold.
Sure enough, the game being stopped and the police starting to check on the people present indicated that something had happened.
A few unlucky guys actually turned tail and ran when they saw things were going badly.
These guys all have criminal records or are carrying contraband. When they see the police starting a thorough search, they run away for fear of being caught.
The outcome was inevitable; the presence of so many SWAT officers on site was no joke. However, their actions did cause some disturbance.
With red eyes, Vincent took out his phone and started dialing Donnie's number, then began listening around for sounds.
The locator on that phone wasn't very accurate; it could only pinpoint a relatively large area. So Vincent had to resort to this clumsy method to find Donnie's phone.
Vincent, who had been having a bad day, finally had a stroke of luck when he heard his phone vibrate as he passed a van.
"Fox News? Whose car is this? Find the owner right now!"
Soon, the three people from Fox News were located by the police: blonde anchor Megan Kelly, middle-aged white photographer Mike DeSanta, and young black driver Franklin Clinton.
Hmm, the name "Black Man" is quite impressive; it combines the first name of America's founding father with the surname of the President.
Megan Kelly recognized Vincent immediately, and Vincent recognized her in return.
Just a week ago at a press conference, Megan Kelly questioned the suspects in the Los Angeles Circus street racing case, a claim that was refuted by Vincent.
Vincent then quickly ended the press conference, further fueling Megan Kelly's suspicions.
So theoretically speaking, there must be a grudge between the two.
Megan Kelly now strongly suspects that Vincent is using his position to settle personal scores and deliberately causing her trouble.
"It's you!"
"Fox News, Megan Kelly!"
However, Megan's professionalism as a journalist quickly calmed her down, and she looked at Vincent coldly.
"Officer Vincent, what's the matter?"
Vincent, with a similarly unpleasant expression, pointed to the interview vehicle beside him.
"Is this your car?"
"Yes, is there a problem?"
"Open the car immediately, I'm going to search it!"
Megan was very unhappy with Vincent's tough attitude, and she rejected him without thinking.
"Why? You need a reason to search our car, right?"
"I suspect your car is involved in a bank robbery! Open the car immediately!"
Megan became increasingly dissatisfied with these words. As a media professional, she knew that there had been no bank robberies in Los Angeles recently, so she instinctively felt that Vincent was deliberately trying to cause her trouble.
"Where's the evidence? Do you have any evidence? Mike, turn on the camera and film Officer Vincent in all his glory!"
Vincent stared at Megan and Mike, who was carrying a camera, with a cold look in his eyes.
"Confiscate that camera; I suspect it's also evidence in connection with a crime!"
SWAT officers quickly moved forward and snatched Mike's camera, leaving the middle-aged white man sweating profusely.
"Wait a minute, this stuff is expensive, don't do anything reckless!"
"Ms. Kelly, this is your last warning. If you don't open this car, I will take you to the police station and detain you for 48 hours on suspicion of involvement in organized crime!"
Upon hearing this, the Black driver, Franklin, couldn't take it anymore.
"Meghan, if we end up in jail, we'll be in big trouble! They have all sorts of ways to deal with us!"
It's easy to tell from Franklin's tone that he must have suffered a loss before.
However, for a Black man, it is already very lucky that his magazine wasn't emptied by the police on the street.
Megan bit her lip and nodded.
"Officer Vincent, if you can't give me a reasonable explanation, I will exercise my right to file a complaint with the Los Angeles Police Department! Franklin, open the car!"
Vincent was not afraid of Megan's threats. After the van was opened, he immediately boarded it to check and quickly found a cell phone and an ECM jammer that looked like a walkie-talkie among a pile of miscellaneous items.
Megan stared in surprise at the phone and the ECM jammer.
"Xiao Fu, is this your phone?"
Franklin shook his head, and then Megan looked at Mike.
"Hey! Do you think a middle-aged man like me would use such a trendy phone?"
Vincent walked up to Megan with his phone and questioned her.
"Were there any other people in the car before you came here?"
