America: Starting with the Last Liberty
Chapter 7 Stereotypes
"Blake, what brings you here? Is your foot alright?"
Blake opened the door and saw Rosen's muscular upper body.
Because he had just woken up and hadn't had time to change his clothes, Lawson was still wearing a white vest.
The overwhelming surge of masculine hormones made Blake feel a little dizzy.
"Huh? My foot? It still hurts a little, no, but I can walk now."
Looking at Blake's adorable stuttering, Rosen couldn't help but chuckle.
"Blake, you still haven't told me what you want!"
"Oh, right! Mom wanted to thank you for helping me last night and would like to invite you to lunch."
"Really? I'll wash up and come right away!"
When visiting a neighbor's house, one should still observe some etiquette. Rosen quickly washed up and changed into the bulletproof suit he had just received.
This suit was Rosen's best outfit at the moment, and he even looked somewhat like a social elite when he wore it. When he walked in, it caught the eye of Blake and Mrs. Gaines.
"Rosen, why are you dressed so formally?"
"Mrs. Gaines, when visiting someone's home, it's best to be a little more formal."
"Please sit down, the spaghetti bolognese will be ready soon."
Rosen noticed that Blake was already seated at the table, holding a knife and fork, looking ready to start eating.
However, when she saw Rosen's gaze turn to her, Blake immediately put down her knife and fork and acted like a lady.
Soon, the steaming hot Italian meat sauce pasta was served, its aroma so enticing that it made one's mouth water.
"Mrs. Gaines, are you of Italian descent?"
"Yes, I'm a second-generation Italian immigrant to America. I learned these Italian dishes from my grandmother, Blake. Come and try them, how do you like them!"
Although it felt a little strange to have Rosen eat noodles with a knife and fork, he still gave it a thumbs up after taking a bite.
"It tastes really good!"
"Really? That's wonderful! It's a pity that such excellent skills have no one to inherit them. Some girls are almost 20 years old and still can't even cook pasta! I wonder if girls like that will ever find boyfriends?"
Mrs. Gaines gave her daughter Blake a meaningful look, which made Blake blush.
"Mom! I'm doing this for my studies! Does that mean I didn't get into Caltech?"
Caltech?
Rosen couldn't help but glance at Blake again.
Having been in America for over a month, he had gained some understanding of America's social structure.
Caltech, a private university, is extremely difficult to get into. Without a strong alumnus to write a recommendation letter, it's very difficult to get in on your own.
That's something only the absolute best of the best could do.
Surprisingly, Blake, who seemed a bit scatterbrained, was actually a top student.
It completely contradicts the stereotypical prejudice that X University is brainless. Despite having such powerful bio-armor, how come their academic performance is so good!
However, tuition at Caltech is not cheap; popular majors can cost over $100,000 a year, unless Blake can get a full scholarship.
Perhaps Mr. Gaines is a very wealthy man? That's why Mrs. Gaines looks so elegant?
"Come on, I'd rather you find a proper boyfriend than become a 'Nerd' at university."
Nerd usually refers to a bookworm who is obsessed with knowledge and books; it is a derogatory term with obvious stereotypes.
In a socially conscious society like America's, nerdy, unsociable individuals often face various forms of discrimination or bullying and find it difficult to find a partner.
"Mom! I came here to help you and Dad make up, not to discuss my problems!"
Blake was clearly taken aback by talking about his shortcomings in front of Rosen, so he quickly interrupted Mrs. Gaines.
"Blake, what I do with that guy is an adult matter, it's none of your business. What you need to do is find a boyfriend quickly, otherwise I'll start to think there's something wrong with your sexual orientation!"
When the topic of finding a boyfriend came up, Blake couldn't help but blush, and his voice immediately dropped to a much lower volume.
"Mom, I'm 19 years old now, I'm not a child anymore!"
"As long as you're not married, you'll always be a child in my eyes!"
Italians' family values are actually very similar to those of Tokyo University. Mrs. Gaines' words made Rosen think of his family in his previous life.
Noticing that Rosen was in low spirits, Mrs. Gaines immediately took care of his mood.
"Rosen, did I say something I shouldn't have?"
"It's nothing, Mrs. Gaines. I was just thinking about my family."
"Family? I don't recall you mentioning your family before. What happened to them?"
"They are all in another world, a world I can't reach."
These words immediately reminded Mrs. Gaines of some unpleasant things.
"Oh, poor child!"
The atmosphere in the room suddenly became somewhat silent, with Mrs. Gaines and Black both looking at Rosen with sympathetic eyes.
Rosen knew that Gaines and her daughter had misunderstood, but time travel was a difficult thing to explain.
Just as things were getting awkward, Rosen suddenly noticed some strange reflections outside the window, as if someone was spying on them from a distance using binoculars.
But when Rosen looked away, the reflection disappeared.
"Rosen, there's some spaghetti bolognese in the kitchen. Would you like some more?"
"Thanks!"
Finally, under the force-feeding of Mrs. Gaines and Blake, Rosen ate the food he usually ate for two meals, and his stomach was about to burst.
After lunch, Mrs. Gaines wanted Rosen to take Blake to a nearby clinic to check his foot problem and buy some painkillers.
Having accepted someone's lunch, Rosen naturally wouldn't refuse, especially since the person he was helping was Blake.
When going downstairs, Rosen still carried him on his back. Blake could barely walk, and it was still somewhat inconvenient for him to walk up the stairs.
However, on his way to the clinic, Rosen felt it was time for him to buy a proper car.
I just received a payment yesterday, so maybe I can go to a used car dealership and buy a car, and who knows, maybe even a Bumblebee.
When Blake arrived at the community clinic, the doctor just pinched him a couple of times, asked a few questions, and then prescribed a bunch of painkillers.
This is the basic situation when seeing a doctor in America. Whether it's a headache, stomachache, cold, or fever, doctors usually prescribe painkillers and tell patients to go home and bear with it.
If you can get through it, it's a blessing from God; if you can't, it's just bad luck.
"Blake, sit here for a while, I'll go to the pharmacy and buy you some painkillers."
Rosen put Blake on the bench and went to the nearest pharmacy to buy medicine.
As soon as he turned a corner, Rosen was shoved against the wall by a tremendous force.
"Wait f*** you!"
