111. The Reason Why

Translator: asassin

What Du Chuxuan said was a bombshell, for though most people knew a thing or two about martial arts, few could tell whether others practiced it. However, as soon as Du Chuxuan finished speaking, many started to believe this girl did know martial arts, so their opinions of her turned worse.

Slightly surprised, the girl collected herself quickly. Her eyes lowered, like a pitiable creature. “My Lord, I’m just a nobody. Now I’ve got involved, I have no alternative but to ask for your help. I promise I’ll return your favor.”

Though the girl acted as if the situation was to her disadvantage, it was clear to Du Chuxuan that she intended to speak her last two sentences to Yuxing Tianrui, which fueled his anger.

What a b**ch! How dare she seduce his man in front of him? Did she think nothing of him?

However, Yuxing Tianrui didn’t notice any of that.

Jiu Dengdan didn’t come with them, who stayed at the hotel instead.

Standing next to him was Luo Yi, who could also tell the girl knew martial arts, through a secret approach of Sect Luo. Yuxing Tianrui never learned that, so he didn’t see through the girl.

Du Chuxuan threw a glance at Yuxing Tianrui, who was staring back at him blankly, which brightened his mood. He then turned to the girl again, saying coldly. “Well? Are you so fond of my good looks that you are scheming something? How are you going to repay me? Not by marriage, I assume? That lord saved you first, before I even spoke. How do you take that into account? Are you going to take two husbands?”

He was so blatant that his remarks made those around him redden. Yet he looked as if it wasn’t a big deal which distinguished him from the others.

“What are you talking about!” Shocked by Du Chuxuan’s obscenity, the girl turned to him again. She had to admit, he was indeed handsome.

He stood there, as good-looking as the man next to him. Every girl would be over the moon to marry a man like him.

“Huh, finally, a man with brains, who hasn’t been easily fooled by beauty, at least.” Not happy to be ignored, the youth in extravagant clothes spoke up. He gestured at Du Chuxuan. “So, are you going to help a girl full of lies or not?”

Immediately, those around them started to whisper. It started as a story where the hero was going to save the beauty and suddenly went wrong, for the hero seemed to have developed a friendly relationship with the villain. Many felt sorry for the girl, which reminded them of the hardships they faced as commoners.

“Do you even know what law is?” The burly guy flared up and straightened his ax. “Don’t underestimate me.” Pointing his ax at the young lord in extravagant clothes, he added, “You are the son of Commissioner Chang. I don’t care what a bully you used to be. You are not going to lay a single finger on this girl as long as I’m here!”

“And you, as a man of Wulin, you should take the destiny of your country and countrymen as your own responsibility. Yet you are impervious to others’ misfortunes and wallow in the mire. I’ll report you to the chief at the assembly so that he can banish you. You’ll end up detested by all.”

Du Chuxuan frowned slightly at that. He had spoken up for he wanted to help this man who he thought was a good person who was temporarily fooled by beauty.

Now it turned out this man was simply mad, who didn’t care about the truth at all.

Yuxing Tianrui turned a bit gloomy as well. However, knowing he couldn’t expose himself, not yet, he kept this guy in his mind, deciding to get even with this fool later. He always knew he wasn’t a saint. He would let everyone that offended his beloved by acting without thinking taste the bitter consequence.

Not aware that he had offended people he couldn’t afford to, the big guy glared at Chang Guangqing and Du Chuxuan, shielding the girl from them.

Amused by his reaction, Du Chuxuan burst out laughing. He then turned to Chang Guangqing. “So, you are the son of Commissioner Chang. I’ve heard about your father many times. Now I see it is true. Like father like son.”

It was obvious he wanted to make friends with Chang Guangqing. He would prefer a more suitable time and location, though.

Chang Guangqing paused slightly, amused by him. The world saw him as a playboy, who not only squandered his father’s authority but also brought shame on his father. He was the only one who knew his struggles. To his surprise, the man that just spoke struck a chord in his heart.

“May I know your name? It’s the best time of year to watch the river at Virtue Building. Would you like to join me?” It was an invitation. Happy as he was, Du Chuxuan nodded in agreement.

“Guangqing, what did the girl do to have you make such a scene?”

Everything else aside, Du Chuxuan was confident in his judgment of people, having followed Jiu Dengdan around the country for years, he knew that girl wasn’t easy to deal with from her eyes. She must have done something now that Chang Guangqing was onto her.

Besides, even if he didn’t trust Chang Guangqing, he knew he shouldn’t doubt him considering what an upright person Commissioner Chang was. An official like him wouldn’t have taught his son to be a scoundrel.

“Huh,” sneered Chang Guangqing. “Now that you’ve asked, let me tell you.” As he spoke, his eyes were fixed on the girl, spilling venom.

“Many martial arts masters have arrived in Xiang Yang recently. Proliferation of confrontations would have been normal. Yet the officials have received reports that women are going missing. Investigations showed that most were taken away while being unconscious.” He slowed down a bit. Seeing nods among the commoners, he knew his words were seeping in their minds.

Hearing that, fear grew in the girl’s eyes. Yet she still feigned calmness as if it was nothing.

“I found there was something shady behind it so I looked into it.”
