Chapter 37: Would She Get Stood Up?

It was Friday, finally.

It was the day that everyone had been looking forward to.

The good weather from the previous days were all gone, and the day started off with pouring rain instead.

Ning Youyou purposely woke up earlier to choose her outfit. She stood in front of the mirror for a while to compare dresses and finally decided on a baby-blue gown with an empire silhouette.

She sighed at the sight of the downpour. However, she did not let the rain affect her mood. She looked at herself in the mirror and her cheeks dimpled as she smiled. Without wasting time, she picked out a pair of high heels to complement her gown and packed everything into a bag. She then put on a proper office look before leaving her house to work.

As soon as she stepped into the office, she was shocked at the sight of her colleagues.

Thank god!

She was glad to be prepared. Instead of wearing the gown to work, she packed it in a bag so that she could change her outfit later. Otherwise, she would most probably end up looking like everyone else.

Her colleagues looked miserable.

Many of her them wanted to look perfect for the ball, so they chose to wear their ball gowns to work. Even their make-up was already perfectly done. Who would have known that the day that they once thought was perfect would start off with a downpour; most of them were, unfortunately, drenched.

“Youyou, where’s your gown? Are you going to the ball looking like this?”

Xiao Lan was already dressed in a black, long gown. Perplexed, she studied Ning Youyou’s formal office attire with bafflement.

In response to her doubt, Ning Youyou happily showed her the shopping bag in her hand.

Xiao Lan finally realized what was going on. “Damn, why didn’t I think of that? How I wished I could have undressed myself when it started raining all of a sudden! These high heels were truly a torment!”

“Xiao Lan, you shouldn’t be complaining about it anymore. At least, you’re luckier than Xiao Hong,” Ning Youyou could not hide her amusement.

Xiao Lan turned, following Ning Youyou’s gaze, and finally saw Xiao Hong at the door. Almost immediately, she exploded into loud laughter.

Xiao Hong looked wretchedly unhappy. She was on her way to work when the rain started pouring, but unfortunately, she did not have an umbrella. Her gown was thoroughly soaked, and so was her face. All smudged up, her makeup had become a fearsome sight. 

Xiao Hong’s face darkened as soon as she heard Xiao Lan’s boisterous laughter.

“What’s so funny? You should be helping me!”

Ning Youyou gave Xiao Lan a gentle push to stop her from laughing. In a haste, she offered Xiao Hong some tissue papers to pat her dry.

The downpour was so sudden and unexpected that not many were prepared for it, so the vast majority of their colleagues did not make it to work, mostly due to their drenched clothes or smudged make-up. Therefore, there were very few people in the office. 

Even Xiao Hong had decided to take the day off and go home to fix her outfit. While there was no one watching, Xiao Lan stealthily made a call to the man that she had hired from the night club to confirm his attendance.

The ball remained unchanged, regardless of the weather. She needed to make sure that her money was well-spent. 

Upon his confirmation, she heaved a sigh of relief. The man reassured her that he would be punctual.

Ning Youyou, on the other hand, became anxious, too, at the thought of her partner’s attendance. 

“He’ll make it!” She thought to herself. Nonetheless, she was still worried that he would not be able to make it to the ball in time due to the sudden downpour

After careful consideration, she decided to give him a call just to be sure. It only took a moment for her to dial in the number on her cellphone.

The line was connected but her call was left unanswered until it was cut off automatically. 

Displeased, Ning Youyou frowned upon the missed call. He did not pick up the call. Would she get stood up?
