"What are you thinking about?"
Ling Feng remained silent for a moment.
"I'm thinking about the future."
Qian Renxue looked at him.
Things will get better.
Ling Feng nodded.
"Ok.
Things will get better.
The moonlight shone on the roof of the temple, bathing the entire city in a silvery glow.
On the distant city wall, the banner of the Spirit Empire fluttered gently in the night breeze, like the breath of this continent.
Calm breathing.
Steady breathing.
A new day is about to begin.
This time, no one will bother us.
When Ling Feng woke up, it was already broad daylight.
Sunlight streamed in through the cracks in the window frame, drawing a thin band of light on the blue brick floor and landing on his boots placed beside the bed, making the dark leather gleam slightly.
He lay down for a while, listening to the birdsong in the trees outside the window. The sounds were clear and crisp, like several unknown birds vying to sing, their voices varying in length and pitch.
The soft clattering of pots and pans came from the kitchen; the cook was preparing breakfast. The sounds were muffled and gentle, coming from behind several walls.
In the distance, the faint shouts of vendors from the morning market could be heard, intermittent, scattered and then gathered again by the morning breeze.
He sat up, the blankets slipped off, and the wound on his shoulder had scabbed over, feeling slightly itchy to the touch.
He looked down at the scar; the new skin was a lighter shade of pink, like a faint crescent moon in the morning light.
He got dressed and opened the door.
The courtyard was quiet. The leaves of the old locust tree rustled in the wind, and a few withered leaves fell on the steps.
Zhu Zhuqing was sweeping when she heard the door open. She stopped, looked up at him, didn't say anything, just nodded slightly, and continued sweeping.
Ling Feng stood under the eaves for a while, watching the sunlight in the courtyard dance among the leaves and fall to the ground as shattered gold.
Footsteps approached from afar. It was Qian Renxue, carrying a tray with a bowl of porridge and two small dishes on it.
She walked up to him, glanced at him, and without asking if he had slept well last night, simply placed the tray on the stone table under the eaves.
"Dinner's ready."
Ling Feng sat down, took the chopsticks, and found the porridge to be plain white, cooked to perfection, with the rice grains already blooming and melting in his mouth.
The side dishes were pickled radish and pickled cucumber, which were crisp and had a perfect balance of saltiness.
He didn't say anything and ate quietly.
Qian Renxue sat opposite him, not eating, but just watching him eat.
She only spoke after he put down his chopsticks.
What are your plans for today?
Ling Feng thought for a moment, then his gaze fell on the old locust tree in the yard. The fallen leaves were blown by the wind to the corner of the wall, piling up into a small heap.
"Wander around."
Qian Renxue nodded.
"I'll accompany you."
The two walked out of the Hall of Worship together and crossed the streets of Wuhun City.
Chapter 288 Never Miss a Morning
The morning market was already bustling with activity. Stalls selling vegetables, flowers, candied hawthorns, needles and thread lined the street, their calls echoing throughout the market.
Several women were gathered around a fabric stall, selecting fabrics. A vendor selling candied hawthorns, carrying a bundle of straw, weaved through the crowd, his calls drawn out.
Qian Renxue stopped in front of a pottery stall, picked up a small bowl and examined it for a while. The bowl was plain white, without any patterns, and the glaze was warm and smooth.
She put down her bowl, turned her head and saw several strings of bright red candied hawthorns on another stall, glistening in the sunlight.
Ling Feng followed her gaze, then walked over, paid, and handed her a string of candied hawthorns.
Qian Renxue took the candied hawthorn, took a bite, and the sweet and sour sugar coating crumbled between her teeth, causing a slight smile to appear on her lips.
They continued walking, passing by the kindergarten entrance, where they could hear children reciting: "Martial Soul is the foundation of a Soul Master..."
The voices were young and clear, like a flock of little birds learning to sing from their parents.
Qian Renxue stopped and stood by the window for a while. Her face was expressionless, but her gaze softened, like a piece of ice quietly melting in the sunlight.
She didn't rush to leave.
Ling Feng stood beside her, neither urging her nor waiting quietly.
After a long while, Qian Renxue finally looked away and said softly, "Let's go."
They continued walking out of the city.
Once outside the city gate, the road narrowed, and large tracts of farmland stretched out on both sides.
The rice has been harvested, leaving only neat rows of stubble in the fields. A few sparrows hop around on the ridges, occasionally pecking at the soil before looking up warily to see what's going on.
A few wisps of smoke rose from the distant village, as if someone was cooking.
An old farmer was carrying water on the edge of the field. The carrying pole bent his shoulders, and the water buckets swayed gently with his steps.
Upon seeing Ling Feng and Qian Renxue, he stopped, put down the bucket, and bowed respectfully.
Ling Feng nodded to him, and the old farmer picked up the buckets again and continued walking.
At the entrance of the village stands an old locust tree, its trunk so thick that it would take three or four people to encircle it, its canopy blocking out the sun.
There were several stones under the shade of the tree, as if someone often sat here to cool off.
Ling Feng and Qian Renxue sat on the rock for a while.
The wind blew in from the fields, carrying the scent of earth and hay. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled patterns of light on the ground.
In the distance, a dog lay sunbathing beside a haystack, occasionally pricking up its ears to listen for any sounds, before lazily lying back down.
Qian Renxue leaned against the tree trunk and said softly, "Sometimes I feel like these days are like a dream."
Ling Feng didn't reply, but just sat quietly, looking at the harvested field in the distance.
They returned to Wuhun Capital after noon.
In the courtyard of the offering hall, Ning Rongrong was squatting in the corner watching ants carry food, holding a leaf in her hand and carefully tracing the path of an ant.
Jin Chen stood behind her, holding a twig, about to poke it into the ant nest, when Ning Rongrong slapped the back of his hand without turning around.
"Brother Jin Chen, stop causing trouble!"
Jin Chen grinned. "I'm just taking a look."
Ning Rongrong turned around and glared at him, "You don't even need to poke it to see!"
Jin Chen put away the tree branch, turned around and saw Ling Feng and Qian Renxue walking over, so he stood up with a smile, "Boss, Sister Xue'er, you're back? Have you had lunch yet?"
Ling Feng shook his head. "Not yet."
Jin Chen immediately turned and ran towards the kitchen, "I'll go ask the cook to add two more dishes!"
After lunch, Ling Feng sat on the steps in front of the main hall, watching the sunlight in the courtyard move inch by inch.
Ning Rongrong was practicing the auxiliary soul skill of the Nine Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda when a soft golden light fell on Jin Chen.
Jin Chen was lifting a stone weight in the courtyard. After being bathed in light, his movements became noticeably easier. He turned around and gave Ning Rongrong a thumbs up.
Dugu Yan and Hu Liena came out of the offering hall, each holding a few books. They whispered to each other, then sat down on a bench on the other side of the courtyard, opened the books, and continued their discussion.
Xie Yue and Yan were sparring in the training ground. Yan's flames collided with Xie Yue's moon blade, producing a dull sound.
Zhu Zhuqing stood under the corridor for a while, then turned and left.
Ling Feng watched all of this without moving.
As evening fell, Jin Chen's sixth of the nine trials of the Sea God finally yielded results.
When he returned from the Endless Sea, he was injured, but he held in his hand a soul bone of a 100,000-year-old sea spirit beast.
He walked into the offering hall with slightly unsteady steps, but a smile on his face and a voice a few decibels lower than usual: "Boss, I'm back."
Ling Feng got up and walked over, patted him on the shoulder, and didn't ask any questions. Jin Chen grinned, and there was an indescribable calmness in his smile.
Qian Daoliu called Qian Renxue and Ling Feng to his side, and the three of them sat under the angel statue in the offering hall and chatted for a long time.
Qian Daoliu recounted the scene of Qian Renxue awakening her martial spirit when she was a child. He said that she stood in front of this angel statue that day, her little hand resting on the awakening stone, which made the entire hall as bright as day.
He described Jin Chen's appearance when he first arrived in Wuhun Capital: a chubby-cheeked boy following behind Golden Crocodile Douluo, curiously looking around, full of curiosity about everything.
He described Ning Rongrong's appearance when she came to the Spirit Hall from the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile School as a child, holding a rag doll in her arms, her eyes sparkling, and not shy at all.
He recounted many past events, some of which Ling Feng remembered, and some he didn't, but Ling Feng listened quietly to them all.
When Tang San emerged from the secret chamber, it was dusk.
He stood under the old locust tree in the courtyard, golden sunlight filtering through the leaves and falling on him, as if gilding him with a soft halo.
Ah Yin was sitting on a stone bench not far away, holding a book in her hand.
She looked up and saw Tang San standing there, so she put down her book and waved to him.
Tang San was silent for a moment, then walked over and sat down on the stone bench.
The two sat quietly in the sunset without speaking.
Ling Feng glanced at it from afar, but didn't approach; he turned and walked away.
Xu Shaoyang's ship docked in the spring of the following year.
