Tang San was chopping wood in the courtyard when he saw Ling Feng walk in. He put down his axe and sat down on the stone bench.
Ling Feng sat down opposite him and cut to the chase: "Have you ever thought about doing something bigger than sharpening swords?"
Tang San looked at him, as if he was slowly digesting the weight of that question.
After a while, he said, "I've thought about it."
But I haven't figured out exactly what it is yet.
Ling Feng nodded: "No rush."
Think it through before you speak.
Tang San paused for a moment, then said, "You're asking this because there's something you want me to do?"
Ling Feng said, "Not now."
I just felt you should know that the knife in your hand can do more than just whittle wood and chop firewood.
Tang San kept those words to himself for a moment, then said, "I understand."
When spring comes, a layer of new green sprouts at the foot of the city walls of Wuhun Capital.
The grass seeds hidden in the cracks between the bricks finally poked their heads out, their slender leaves swaying gently in the wind, like someone who had just woken up stretching.
Every morning, Ling Feng would stand in the yard for a while, watching the new buds of the old locust tree grow day by day, from the size of a grain of rice to the size of a fingernail, and from pale yellow to light green.
Jin Chen took on a job in the spring: escorting a batch of soul tool materials from Wuhun Capital to Haifeng City.
It wasn't anything important, but he volunteered to go.
On the morning he left, he carried the trident of Poseidon across his back and wore an old, dark blue robe.
When he reached the city gate, he glanced back at the city wall and didn't see Ling Feng, but he knew Ling Feng should be there.
He waved his hand, then turned and walked south along the official road, his steps more steady and powerful than before, like someone who was no longer in a hurry to get somewhere.
Ling Feng stood on the city wall and watched his figure gradually shrink in the morning light, then disappear into the end of a newly green field.
He put his hand down and stood by the edge of the battlements for a while.
He sensed that the forces taking shape in the distance were growing slowly and steadily, like new shoots peeking out of the soil, knowing when to grow and when to stop.
He knew they would continue to grow.
All he needs to do is stand here and watch them grow into the shapes they are meant to be.
The wind blew in from the fields, carrying the scent of earth and grass, circled around him, and then dispersed.
He stood on the city wall for a while longer, then walked down the steps and returned to the front of the temple.
Qian Renxue was sitting on the veranda waiting for him; the tea was still hot.
On the day Jin Chen left Wuhun Capital, the morning light bathed the official road.
He wore a faded dark blue robe, with the trident of Poseidon slung diagonally behind him. The tip of the trident gleamed wetly in the rising sun, as if it had just been pulled from the sea.
He neither rode a horse nor took a carriage; he simply walked step by step along the official road.
The pace wasn't fast, but each step was firm, as if he were measuring the distance between himself and the sea with the soles of his feet.
It took him four days to reach Sea Breeze City.
The city gate was much more bustling than the last time I visited, with a constant stream of caravans coming and going.
He did not enter the city, but went around it from the outside and continued eastward along the coastline.
He was going to the deepest part of the endless sea.
That sea area, without any coastline markings, is not on any map; its boundaries can only be found by following the scent of the seawater.
Jin Chen walked along the coastline for two days and found a secluded fishing village where he rented a fishing boat.
The boat was small, with an old sail at the stern and a roll of fishing net and half a bucket of fresh water piled on the deck.
The boat owner was a taciturn old man. He glanced at him, then at the trident of Poseidon on his back, asked no further questions, took the fare, and turned to leave.
Jin Chen pushed the boat into the water, climbed onto the gunwale, and then placed the Trident of Poseidon across his lap. He didn't rush to row, but sat for a while, as if waiting for something.
The sea breeze blew in from the south, carrying a salty, fishy smell, and ruffled the wisps of hair on his forehead.
He could feel the water flowing slowly beneath the surface, breathing at its own rhythm.
He picked up the oars and began rowing towards the deep sea.
As the ship sailed further and further from the shore, the low houses and tree canopies on the shore gradually became a blurry gray line, eventually disappearing completely below the horizon.
All that remained was a vast, ever-expanding expanse of blue, with varying shades of seawater flowing beneath the ship.
He rowed for a full day and night, and along the way he encountered a giant sea turtle that lived in the nearshore area. The edges of its shell were covered with barnacles and seaweed. When it saw his boat, it was like a long-moving reef that suddenly changed direction and sank to the bottom of the water, leaving behind a whirlpool that was slowly disappearing.
He saw a group of silver fish pass under the boat, circling around it without disturbing the calm of the water, leaving behind converging undercurrents.
He felt the currents shifting positions beneath his boat, as if telling him in their own way that he had entered their territory.
The next day, the seawater turned a deep blue, like a polished bluestone, heavy and without a trace of impurity.
No ships or land could be seen on the sea; only the sun hung in the sky, casting its light evenly across the water.
Jin Chen put down the oars and let the boat drift on the sea.
He sat on the gunwale, his eyes closed, and felt the current under the boat changing direction, as if something was adjusting its position deep underwater.
He didn't know how long he had been drifting; it could have been half a day or a whole day.
When he opened his eyes again, it was already dark. There was no moon on the sea, only a faint, not-yet-extinguished, deep blue halo remaining on the distant horizon.
He stood up, facing the sea, without saying a word.
He knew where he was going.
The ocean currents were guiding him, like an invisible hand adjusting his direction.
He picked up the oars again and continued paddling forward with the current.
The seawater was also guiding his direction, patiently and steadily pushing him toward a place he had not yet seen.
Another day passed, and he saw a huge whirlpool on the sea.
The vortex has a wide edge, like a circular mirror slowly sinking.
The center of the whirlpool was much darker than the surrounding area, as if there was an entrance to a deeper place that was slowly rotating there. The surrounding seawater was like a cloth being wrung out, with a uniform and continuous force, as if it was contracting inward.
Jin Chen did not stop the boat.
He stood up, put away the oars, and let the boat drift with the current toward the whirlpool. He held the trident of Poseidon in his hand and felt the swirling water touching the shaft of the trident.
As the ship entered the edge of the whirlpool, it was caught in the rotating force.
The boat began to move along the arc of the whirlpool, its speed increasing, and water splashed against the hull.
Chapter 328 Poseidon Jin Chen
He steadied himself, not trying to control the direction, but simply letting the boat glide down with that force, passing through layer after layer of water. The light grew dimmer, changing from deep blue to inky blue, and from inky blue to almost complete black.
The water pressure was increasing, but the trident of Poseidon was slightly warm in his hand, like a barrier helping him resist the pressure.
The ship stopped.
The water surface returned to calm, and the surrounding light also returned to its brightness.
He found himself in the center of a vast underwater space.
The space resembled a palace submerged by seawater, its walls constructed of coral and rock, overgrown with seaweed and barnacles.
In the center of the hall is a prominent platform, engraved with the same patterns as those on the trident of Poseidon.
He jumped off the ship and stepped onto the platform, feeling the patterns glowing, responding to the flowing light on the trident of Poseidon.
Below the platform, a slowly flowing golden ribbon of light was lifting him upwards.
Those bands of light were pushing him upwards, through layer after layer of fading water, until the light of day reappeared above his head.
When he surfaced, he found himself standing on a stretch of sea with no landmarks.
There was no ice or driftwood beneath our feet, only a layer of seawater that was shimmering slightly with silver light, as if it were being illuminated from below by something.
He stood there, the trident of Poseidon planted in the water before him, its shaft upright like a stake driven into the sea.
He could feel the ocean currents surging beneath his feet changing direction.
He could sense a slowly forming aura spreading upwards from the depths of the sea, passing through the layers of water, and approaching him.
He saw a golden light slowly rising in the distance, moving towards him at a slow pace, as if it had traveled a long distance and finally slowed down in the last part of the journey.
It was a huge golden sea beast, its entire body covered with a layer of fine golden scales. A pair of light golden eyes were staring at him, without hostility or probing in their gaze, as if they were examining something he had been waiting for a long time.
It stopped in front of him, its voice gentle and resonant, as if polished by the waves: "You've come."
Jin Chen said, "I'm here."
The golden sea beast's gaze fell on the trident of Poseidon in his hand: "That weapon was left to you by the sea god."
Jin Chen said, "I know."
The golden sea beast said, "Then you should also know that weapons are just weapons."
True inheritance is not something you hold in your hands.
After saying that, it didn't say anything more, but just looked at him quietly, as if giving him time to digest the weight of those words.
After some time, he felt a gust of wind blowing from afar, and then he heard the voice of Poseidon, the god of the sea.
The voice seemed to come from a great distance, but it became very clear when it reached his ears: "Are you ready to take over that position?"
Jin Chen remained silent for a long time, so long that the voice did not urge him.
Then he said, "I'm ready."
The spreading golden pattern stopped beneath his feet, and then the seawater began to recede, making way for a passage to the deep sea.
Jin Chen walked down the passage and felt the receding seawater slowly closing in behind him.
At the end of the passage was a wide open space, in the center of which floated a ball of golden light, like solidified water.
Jin Chen walked up to the ball of light, reached out his hand, and touched the surface of the light with his fingertips.
