Francis, the first Viscount Saint-Alben, once said, "Knowledge is power."
While at the Convent of Mary, Praris was punished by Sister Maine to do laundry. The convent uniform consisted of a white blouse and a black skirt, and what was worse, the children had to do chores every day, inevitably getting oil stains on their clothes.
Unfortunately, people couldn't see Prarese's struggle; she easily removed the grease stains using toothpaste and dish soap as cleaning agents.
Prarese knew early on that she could change her situation not through tears or brute force. All she needed was knowledge, lots and lots of knowledge.
Praris opened "Standard Spells: Elementary" and carefully looked at the knowledge that was completely new to her.
It was already dusk when her attention was drawn away from her textbook, and Tom came to knock on the door to call her for dinner.
Praris had tried to use his own power before, but without a wand, it was still difficult for an underage person with unstable power to cast magic on his own.
Now, things are fine. The temporary guardian is not here, the wand is in the suitcase, and Praris is alone in the room with a book called "Standard Spells: Beginner" in front of him.
It truly can be described as a perfect storm of favorable timing, location, and human factors.
By the time Tom knocked on the door, Praris had already boldly tried several spells and even learned to lift the candlesticks in the room with a levitation charm.
Praris was unaware that minors were not allowed to use magic outside of school.
Fortunately, she hadn't started school yet, and the Ministry of Magic could only know where minors used magic, while Praris was in Diagon Alley, the place with the most young wizards before school started.
“Miss Praris, it’s time for dinner. Would you like some buttered bread?” Tom asked, leading her downstairs.
“Just call me Pray,” Praris waved his hand. “Can I call you Tom?”
"of course can."
Tom didn't know why, but he felt that the girl Professor Snape brought was strangely stressful to him.
After thinking about it, I realized it might be because her stern face had the air of Snape, or rather, the professors.
In short, like a teacher about to yell at someone.
Praliss was unaware that Tom was already comparing her to the teachers at Hogwarts; she received a free loaf of butter and a glass of milk.
Snape paid for her room and board from today until the start of school—the money was supposedly from the school—and gave her some extra money.
Praliss decides to fall in love with Hogwarts, a school that's so incredibly humane, even offering scholarships.
While Prarese was eating, Tom was observing the girl that Severus Snape had brought.
Because of the Wizarding War ten years ago, there were indeed some children who lost both parents. But even so, there were almost no orphans enrolling at Hogwarts.
The children's relatives, distant relatives, and even the children's parents' friends will consciously take on the responsibility of raising the children.
Therefore, Tom had no idea that Praris was an orphan about to start school.
All he knew was that Professor Snape brought a little girl of about eight or nine years old, paid for her room and board for a while, told Tom to take good care of her, and then left without looking back.
"This is really weird," Tom thought to himself.
There's something even stranger!
This girl named Praris stayed upstairs all afternoon without stepping out of her room. Anyone who didn't know better would have thought there was no one inside!
Tom kept glancing at her out of the corner of his eye while wiping the cup.
The girl looked very thin, with her black hair tied up in a bun. She had deep-set features but a pale face, and her eyes would occasionally gaze into one direction, lost in thought, as if she were pondering something.
Yes, Praris was thinking. She wasn't just thinking; she was eavesdropping.
The Leaky Cauldron is a gathering place for many wizards, and the casual conversations of the people there are an important source of information for her.
From her observation, there were only wizards here, no ordinary people, or Muggles. She deduced that some kind of magic was used to make Muggles unable to see, or rather, to ignore, this place.
The children next to them were clearly from Muggle families about to start school. A bored wizard gave them a rundown of the four houses and recommended "Hogwarts: A History of the School".
It sounds like a book that can enhance your understanding of the magical world, much more useful than a textbook on the history of magic starting from Merlin.
She plans to visit Flourish and Blotts again.
It makes perfect sense to allocate the scholarship funds here, doesn't it?
"But how does Hogwarts determine which house I should go to? Is it based on grades? Are there exams?" the new student asked eagerly.
A wrinkled, raggedly dressed wizard grinned, revealing a mouthful of yellow teeth: "My dear, I won't tell you, it's probably a very difficult test!"
The new students were taken aback.
As soon as the wizard finished speaking, everyone in the Leaky Cauldron burst into laughter. Praris, who heard the laughter, almost rolled his eyes.
She realized that the so-called test probably wouldn't be too difficult.
This is called psychological projection. These people have been fooled by similar words before, so they believe that the newborn will also be fooled by the same words. When the wizard teases the newborn, they are happy that they can control a child, and also happy that the newborn is as foolish as they were in the past.
What a perverse sense of humor adults have! Praris took a bite of bread.
The boy said in a panic, "What should I do? What do I need to prepare? I don't know any magic at all."
“Oh yes, child,” said a bearded wizard. “You’d better read through all the books for school admission, or you’ll be expelled if you fail the exams!”
The Leaky Cauldron bar was filled with a cheerful atmosphere once again.
It seems these books are for use after the start of the semester. It doesn't matter if I can't finish them now, Praris thought to himself.
However, she would not stop absorbing knowledge. Her life was a struggle against the devil; only by running forward could she escape the pursuit of hell.
Pralis finally turned around to look at Tom; the man's gaze was practically burning a hole in her back.
She finished the last sip of milk, walked to the counter, and placed the milk glass in front of him: "Let me think, you're curious about me? Hmm, you're curious about my relationship with Professor Snape?"
Tom's pupils contracted slightly; it seemed she had guessed correctly.
"Don't worry, there's nothing between us except our teacher-student relationship. It seems you've been observing me for a long time but haven't found anything. Actually, there's nothing to observe about me. There are plenty of ordinary people like me in the world. You should observe Professor Snape more; he's far more capable than me."
After saying that, Praris smiled politely at him and slowly walked upstairs.
Is this Legilimency? No, how could such a young child possibly be Legilimency? But it is said that there are naturally born Legilimency.
The boss suddenly had more to think about and could no longer ignore Praris's presence.
Prarese found her wallet containing her allowance in her suitcase. She put the wallet and wand into her self-sewn crossbody bag and set off for Flourish and Blotts.
In Britain, books are considered both a means of development and enjoyment, and all types of books are incredibly expensive.
Therefore, Flourish and Blotts sells not only new books but also secondhand books.
According to Prarese's observation, calling them secondhand is an understatement. The so-called secondhand books here have actually passed through three or four hands.
Even so, these books are very expensive!
In the end, Praris only bought a tattered copy of "Hogwarts: A History of the School".
This tattered book cost her quite a bit of money.
Thank you again to Hogwarts for paying for her school supplies!
Praris returned to the Leaky Cauldron with a resentful look on his face, determined to thoroughly examine several textbooks and this tattered book—conceptually, not physically.
"History of Magic," "Theory of Magic," "A Thousand Magical Herbs and Mushrooms," and "Monsters and Their Origins" were simply memorized; Praris memorized them by flipping through the books.
The spells aren't difficult to learn; Praris can try them on his own, just like the Levitation Spell.
The more troublesome classes are Transfiguration, Potions, and Defense Against the Dark Arts.
The premise of transfiguration is Gamp's basic transfiguration principle—this is noted in the textbook, highlighting the dangers of the course.
Prarese is no longer the ignorant and fearless woman she was just a few days ago.
The book "Hogwarts: A History" mentions cases of magical accidents resulting in injury or even death. This made her somewhat cautious, and she began studying the Transfiguration laws first.
The limitation of potion-making lies in the raw materials; she only has equipment, not materials, so she can only look at the textbook first.
The reasons for the Defense Against the Dark Arts class are roughly the same: no dark magic attacked her, and no magical creatures attacked her, so what defense could she possibly have?
Even so, there is still so much for her to learn!
Apart from meals, she almost never left her room, sometimes even missing mealtimes and turning her midnight snack into dinner.
"What has she been doing all this time?" Snape finally remembered Prasris, whom he had left at the Leaky Cauldron.
Tom scratched his head, recalling the scene he'd witnessed while cleaning the guest room: "I suppose it was...reading a book?"
"anything else?"
"Have a meal?"
Snape's lips twitched twice, then he tossed his cloak and went upstairs.
This student is very special, extremely special.
She was an orphan, good-looking, and not stupid at all; in fact, she could be considered quite intelligent, in addition to her thirst for knowledge and quiet, polite demeanor.
The last person who met all of the above characteristics during their student days got a mark on their arm.
Dumbledore, seemingly unable to ignore her presence, then handed the child over to himself.
Bang bang bang!
Praris squinted.
Tom knocks on the door and calls her name, which is clearly not Tom.
The person outside that door can only be—
Prarese jogged over to open the door and met Snape's dark, deep eyes: "Professor, come in. Is it time for the start of the semester?"
Yes, this irresponsible professor didn't even tell Pralis when classes started. Although she's already resolved the issue herself, it's still a good starting point for the conversation.
“I don’t think you’ve been sleeping here all this time, completely unaware of the outside world.”
Snape is good at shifting blame; he didn't announce the start date of school himself, but he shifted the blame onto Prarese in just a few words.
Chapter 3 Stories on the Train
Praris shook his head: "Of course not, but I can't think of another reason why you would come to me."
"You smell of fresh herbs, so I think you just finished an experiment. You're so busy, you wouldn't waste your precious time on trivial matters."
"And there is only one important thing on my mind."
Snape glanced at Praris's room: it was tidy, but the kind of tidy where the walls were bare.
Everything here is the same as when she first arrived, except for the suitcase by the wall and a book on the table.
