"Ha! Then go ahead, leave the safety outside to me!" Lanis laughed loudly, stopped wasting words with Abyss, waved to him, and then turned around and walked towards the exit of the basement.
This explosive maniac was already preparing a spectacular fireworks display for any enemies who came looking for trouble. Abyss smiled slightly, turned around, and walked directly into the portal.
A burst of magical lightning erupted the moment the Abyss entered. The unstable magic caused the portal to shake violently. Then, the last magical crystal embedded in the portal cracked and shattered completely in two. The portal flickered weakly for a moment before vanishing entirely. The only passage connecting Rebecca to the world she was destined for had vanished.
……
As soon as he stepped into the portal, Abyss felt an immense pull in front of him, as if he were falling face down from the sky, being rapidly pulled forward by this force. He was surrounded by darkness; he couldn't see anything or hear anything, only the constant pulling sensation made him feel somewhat comfortable.
This attraction seemed to last both very short and very long; the concepts of time and space seemed to be distorted by this portal.
After an unknown amount of time, Abyss felt a sudden ring of air surrounding him, with the sensation of wind coming from all directions.
In the next instant, Abyss's feet touched the ground, and the darkness before him instantly turned into light.
The cool air instantly filled the Abyss's lungs, and the Abyss raised its head to carefully observe the surrounding scenery.
"This world... seems to have once been very prosperous," Abyss muttered to himself, looking around.
He stood atop a small hill, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. About five or six kilometers from the Abyss, there seemed to be a small town with many houses boasting silver roofs, its architecture unlike anything he'd ever seen in Hay-Tver. A river meandered through the town, its water a bright yellow, clearly undrinkable. The sky was azure, with a few wispy blue clouds drifting lazily across it.
There was a wide road leading out of the town. Abyss turned around and looked in the direction of the road. In the distance, there seemed to be a larger town, and he could vaguely see several towering buildings that looked like some tall towers.
He had never seen anything like it before. There were buildings in this place. Could there be residents here?
Abyss was very curious about what the inhabitants of this other world would be like. Were they friendly? Did they look like humans? Could they be resurrected as ghosts after death? How were their internal organs different from those of humans?
Abyss gently stroked his ring, trying to summon a ghostly warhorse for transportation, but as he expected, the ghostly warhorse was not summoned.
"Hmm, never mind, I'll just walk there." Abyss chanted a spell, and fortunately, magic was still usable here. A gust of wind appeared beneath his feet, carrying him forward and floating towards the nearest town.
He also put on the gas mask he had gotten from Lanis. Although the air in this world was breathable, Abyss sensed that there were some unknown chronic toxins in the air, which might have some unknown effects on the body if inhaled for a long time.
What is the nature of this world? The further Abyss walked, the more he felt that the chances of living people existing in this world were slim.
Because there is not a single tree, a single blade of grass, not even moss or lichen on the ground here, the Abyss can hear no other sound except for the sound of the wind around it.
Dead silence, utterly lifeless.
Chapter Five: The Ghost Town
This world was once very developed.
Abis made this judgment after arriving in the town.
The town wasn't large, and its transportation wasn't particularly convenient. It didn't seem like a bustling, low-end town, but it was completely different from Hay-Terville, where Abis lived. Here, the houses were orderly, and the streets were clean and tidy. Compared to this, towns of similar development in Hay-Terville were practically filthy, like the mouth of a ghoul. Abis could sense that there was a complete underground drainage system. In Hay-Terville, such advanced facilities were only common in large, prosperous cities; in most small towns, having a few drainage ditches was already considered good.
Most of the houses along the road are two-story buildings. Some of them look like shops, while others are probably residential houses.
The buildings all have a uniform style and a simple beauty, but Abyss still felt something was missing when he stood there—that's right, the residents were missing.
It was supposed to be such a livable town, yet there wasn't a single person in it. Abyss tried sending out a heartbeat detector into the vicinity, but received no results; there wasn't even a rat in sight.
"Is this the world that has already been destroyed?" Abyss muttered to himself as he walked down the deserted streets.
There are only human ruins left behind, but no one lives here. There are no animals, no plants, and perhaps not even microorganisms... Such desolation is not even liked by the Abyss. You see, although the cemetery is where the dead are buried, it is not a completely desolate place. Microorganisms, insects, and even scavengers are part of the cemetery environment.
Abyss continued walking forward, and this time he discovered a different house.
Unlike the other houses with silver roofs, this house was not only larger, but also had a shimmering purplish-red roof. However, it was only one story, with small windows and a large double-leaf door. It was also different from the shops and houses that had lined the road when we arrived.
“What kind of place is this…” Abis strolled to the front of the house and pushed open the half-closed wooden door.
The interior of the house unfolded before the Abyss. The floor was covered in dust, suggesting that no one had been inside for a long time. The interior was spacious, with no walls or other obstructions to the view except for a few load-bearing pillars. A large square platform stood in the center of the room, seemingly an altar for some deity, but strangely, there was no statue on it. It was unclear whether the statue had been moved or whether the gods worshipped by the people of this place simply did not have statues.
Abyss knew he couldn't possibly guess what had happened in this unknown world, so he shook his head and walked away. His immediate priority was finding Rebecca; she should have surveyed the area. If he was curious, he could simply ask her.
Abyss thought for a moment, then chanted a spell and summoned the magical catfish.
Summoning a magical creature is a form of magic. Abyss was able to use wind magic normally just now, so he can naturally summon a magical creature normally now. He put his hand into the mouth of the magical catfish, grabbed something inside, and pulled it out.
The magical catfish's body instantly grew larger to obtain a larger mouth, and a petite girl with long silver twin tails was pulled out by the Abyss. She was also holding the hand of another person, a blonde girl.
Leona and Flora stood before the Abyss.
"What are you doing now?" Leona's impatient voice immediately followed. "I already listened to you and crawled into your big catfish's mouth, what more do you want from me!"
"Abyss, is there anything else... Wait, Leona, we think we've arrived."
Flora had intended to ask the Abyss if there was anything else, but then she noticed many unfamiliar buildings around her, and she found herself standing on a street. She realized she had arrived at her destination. They had thought they had just been pulled out of the magic catfish by the Abyss, but in reality, the time difference inside the magic catfish's belly caused them some discomfort.
Leona also realized what was happening: "Where is this? Is this the new world Rebecca visited? Why are there houses here?"
“That’s right, this is the new world Rebecca discovered. Although there are many buildings here, I haven’t found anything alive nearby.” Abyss shrugged. “Not even a single insect. You’ve also noticed that this place is barren, there aren’t even any plants here.”
Flora wrinkled her nose: "The air here has a strange smell..."
Although the undead can breathe, it is not necessary for them to breathe. Their breathing is mainly used to help them speak and smell. They cannot absorb substances in the air, so Flora and Leona's undead can ignore any toxins and do not need to worry about them.
“There might be some toxins here, just look at ABC wearing gas masks.” Leona also sniffed the air. “Are you sure your gas mask can really protect you from the poisonous gas of this other world?”
“I’m not sure, but this thing shouldn’t be able to kill me in the short term.” Abyss shook his head indifferently. “Rebecca has had time to open the World Conduit after she arrived here, so even if it’s poisonous, it won’t be too potent.”
"You really have no sense of crisis at all," Leona rolled her eyes.
Abyss had already told Leona and Flora about it on his way to Lannis's house, and the two of them naturally knew Rebecca's story.
“What we need to do now is find Rebecca’s location. As I told you when I came here, when I activated that portal, some images flashed through my mind. The last image was of a girl in a white dress lying in a clear spring… and the water was reflecting light, looking like sunlight, so that place is likely open to the elements…”
Abyss slowly organized his thoughts and began to reason.
"The water in that river over there is a bright yellow, it looks like paint." Flora quickly noticed the unusual thing about the river in the distance. "So, either the water here is polluted, or is this just how the water in this world is?"
“So, we just need to find places with relatively clear water to narrow down the search area, right?” Leona said, sucking on her finger and thinking for a moment.
“That’s right, that should be it!” Abyss clapped his hands enthusiastically. “You two hold on to me, I’m going to use magic to fly up into the sky and look down at the ground, to find a place with clear water!”
"I can fly using my battle aura!"
"Alright then, Flora, come and hold me, and Leona can fly using her aura..."
"...No way! I'm too lazy to fly myself! You help me, you stinky ABC!"
"Why are you angry again..."
Chapter Six: The Paradise of the Abyss
Flora lay in Abyss's arms, her hands wrapped around his neck. Leona also wanted to be picked up by Abyss, but after much consideration, she decided to be carried on his back.
Flora and Leona were not heavy, and Abyss carried them both very easily. He chanted a spell, and a stream of energy enveloped his body, carrying him slowly upwards.
When Abis was about one or two hundred meters above the ground, he stopped ascending. At this point, his visibility was excellent, and he could look down at the ground from the sky.
"There's a factory in the distance!" Leona, with her sharp eyes, put one hand on Abyss's shoulder and pointed in a direction with the other, saying, "I've never seen a building like that before, but it looks like there's a chimney on it!"
Abyss looked in the direction Leona pointed, at the buildings he'd seen at the other end of the road when he first arrived in this world. He'd initially thought they were towers, but Leona's reminder made him realize that while they looked like towers, they were actually towering, thick chimneys. Perhaps when this world was still inhabited, these chimneys would have emitted waste gases from their factories, like the potions factory in Lavoisier.
"They need such huge chimneys to discharge their exhaust fumes," Leona exclaimed. "People in this world must burn a lot of coal, right?"
“The toxic fumes I’m breathing right now are probably related to these chimneys,” Abis said, looking at them. “So much exhaust is bound to introduce unnatural impurities into the air, which will definitely have a long-term impact on the health of the residents here. I saw children working as cheap labor for the Sheep’s Eye Gang at their factory before, and most of them had some health problems. And I’ve found that this gas mask doesn’t seem to completely protect me from the toxins in the air. I’m feeling a little tired now.”
Although Abyss gained superhuman physical abilities from Leona, his physical level is still at the level of a mortal. Moreover, the toxin resistance that Abyss has developed over a long period of training does not seem to have any effect on this kind of chronic toxin from another world.
I need to rest for a while and drink some detoxifying potion to flush out the toxins from my body, even if it won't actually cause any real harm to the Abyss.
“Abyss, look behind you, is that an altar?” Flora, lying in Abyss’s arms, suddenly patted his arm, gesturing for him to look behind him.
Following Flora's instructions, Abyss turned around in mid-air and looked at the scenery behind him.
“Ah, I didn’t even notice this at first,” Abyss exclaimed. “My goodness, that’s not just an altar… it’s the place I’ve always longed to visit…”
"What is that?" Leona asked curiously when she heard that the Abyss was a place she longed for. She climbed up a little, rested her chin on the top of the Abyss's head, and looked in the direction the Abyss was looking.
It was a magnificent, enormous altar, tens of meters long, wide, and high, located behind a mountain. There were no statues on the altar; its top consisted of neatly arranged cylinders. Apart from the cylinders, it was very similar to the small altar that Abyss had seen in the town earlier.
But what impressed the Abyss was not the enormous altar, but the neatly arranged tombstones beside it—a dense array of tombstones, roughly estimated to number in the tens of thousands. They were arranged in orderly rows around the altar, radiating outwards in a huge semicircle.
"Such a huge cemetery!" Leona exclaimed in surprise, then immediately became alert. "You're not thinking of digging up someone's grave again, are you?"
"To be honest, I'm a little ashamed to say..." Abis chuckled, "When I saw this huge cemetery, my hands started itching."
"You don't even spare the graves of people from other worlds!" Leona sneered. "As expected, all you necromancers are perverts!"
“If Rebecca entered this world from this area, she certainly wouldn’t have ignored such a large altar,” Flora said to Abyss with some surprise. “Why don’t we go there and take a look? Maybe we can find some clues.”
Abyss nodded. After ascending into the air, he first observed the rivers. Water resources in this world should not be lacking, as many rivers flowed continuously, passing through clusters of buildings. However, regardless of whether they flowed through abandoned factories or deserted towns, the water in all these rivers was a bright yellow, which was inconsistent with the images he had seen in front of the portal.
Flora is right. Rebecca came to this world to conduct research. If she saw such a magnificent altar, she would definitely not let it go. Perhaps she could find clues left by Rebecca there and thus discover her whereabouts.
Now that he had a clear goal, Abyss wasted no more time, and the wind around him carried him toward the altar.
The closer Abyss got to the altar, the clearer its appearance became. The altar was entirely made of white building materials that looked like jade, decorated with shimmering purplish-red patterns. The altar wasn't just a giant cube; upon closer inspection, the Abyss realized it was more like a building than simply an enlarged version of the altar they had seen inside the house. The cylindrical structures at the top, upon closer inspection, revealed that they were actually hollow, likely chimneys or something similar.
People in this world really like chimneys; I wonder what they plan to do with them.
After flying to the side of the altar, Abyss first landed in the cemetery.
“Now that we’ve discovered the cemetery, I’ll try to summon their souls. Maybe we can learn something from these dead people from another world,” Abyss said, putting Flora and Leona down.
Then, he chanted a spell, and wisps of magic began to swirl around him before suddenly spreading outwards.
A surge of magical energy swept across the entire graveyard, and after a moment of silence, Abyss shrugged regretfully.
"What's wrong? Is the other person not cooperating with you?" Leona looked at Abyss.
“That’s not it,” Abyss said. “When I awaken the dead, I don’t just awaken their bodies and turn them into mindless puppets. Instead, I summon their resting souls back to their bodies. However, it seems that the dead in this world don’t have souls that I can summon… Their souls may have already dissipated, or perhaps they’ve gone somewhere else…”
Chapter Seven: Mind-Controlling Poison Gas
In Hay-Tver, every soul is unique. After death, if not affected by specific external influences or burdened by excessively strong attachments, the soul leaves the body, slowly releasing its original spiritual power, and ultimately existing in a stable form with extremely low energy. Such a soul has almost no capacity for thought or feeling, entering a state of absolute tranquility. This state is called "rest."
The souls that have rested have no impact on the living. People die every moment in this world, but because of the low-energy, stable state of these souls, Hay-Tver does not experience an overabundance of ghosts. In ancient times, the people of Hay-Tver believed in the reincarnation of souls, but later it was proven that reincarnation does not exist, and that each person has only one life. Based on this theory, the necromancy school was born amidst twists and turns. However, to express respect for the ancient sages, necromancers still mention the word "reincarnation" in some of their spells—these are merely formalities and do not affect the final effect.
A crucial aspect of necromancy, "soul recall," is based on this very characteristic of the soul. Souls are generally difficult to destroy; human magic cannot harm them. Only certain special divine spells can accomplish this, but even then, the caster must pay a price—annihilating someone else's soul is no small matter, and few casters are willing to do so.
This is also why necromancers were ostracized and suppressed by many forces on the continent when they first appeared and before they even began to do evil. Before their appearance, the dead were known for their ability to keep secrets, but this rule was broken after they appeared. If the dead could speak, many forces would be in danger, since most people have questionable morals.
