In this world, oaths made to God with one's true full name are highly binding, and those who break their oaths will surely suffer misfortune. Flora could not possibly be unaware of this.
The ghost trembled slightly. It knew that Flora had once been a saintess, and it knew how important the name of the Nine Gods was to such a young girl. It finally felt relieved, nodded to Flora, and then gradually disappeared into the air.
“Alright, we can go in now.” Abyss tilted his head toward the stone door. “I won’t let you break your oath.”
Flora also took Abyss's hand in tacit agreement. In just a few days, she had become accustomed to Abyss's steps in entering and leaving the Underworld.
After snapping his fingers, Abyss looked at the stone door in front of him for a moment, then stretched out a hand towards the door.
A layer of sharp bone armor rapidly covered Abyss's hands, a faint buzzing sound echoing in the cave. As the buzzing intensified, Abyss's hands trembled, and then, the bone armor shot out like arrows, striking the stone door in front of him. The stone door was hard and heavy, but it seemed as fragile as sugar before the bone armor launched by Abyss. A palm-sized gap appeared with a crisp sound, followed by dense cracks.
Then, Abis kicked the stone door.
The stone gate made a cracking sound, and some stone chips fell down, but the whole structure remained intact.
"...You should do it."
Abyss, his pride wounded, covered his face and hid behind Flora.
……
After entering through the entrance, what appeared before the two was an unremarkable path leading underground. The surrounding rock walls had been haphazardly carved out without any repair, and the marks of the axe and chisel were still visible on them. There was no light source, and it was more like an unsafe abandoned mine than a princess's tomb.
“It might collapse soon,” Abis said, looking at the rock walls on both sides. “There are quite a few cracks on both sides.”
“If it collapses, the princess and her secrets will be left underground forever, won’t they?” Flora said sadly. “To be cursed to death and buried so hastily is so unfair to Princess Leona.”
“Not only will it be left underground forever, but the princess’s body will also be smashed.” Abyss held up his index finger. “Even with magic and alchemical embalming, I don’t really like digging up an old meat pie from the ground.”
Flora looked at the serious-looking Abyss with disdain.
“But if you say the Queen didn’t care about this tomb, you’re really wrong about her.” Abyss chuckled and pointed to Flora’s feet. “Look what you’re stepping on!”
Flora immediately looked down at her feet, and there was nothing there except for the haphazardly carved steps.
"Don't rush, let's take another look now." Abyss gently blew a breath onto the ground.
A dense array of magical runes suddenly appeared before Flora's eyes. Countless magical runes combined into lines, like a spider web, covering not only the ground but also blocking the path ahead.
“If we weren’t in the Underdark, we would have triggered the alarm mechanisms of these magic circles by the time we entered.” Abyss walked forward without a care in the world. “But it doesn’t matter now. Even if we dance in this tomb, it won’t affect the real world—I do know a dance that’s done in front of a grave. Do you want to learn?”
"Never mind..." Flora immediately refused.
"Sooner or later I'll have you dancing with me." Abis chuckled softly, in a very good mood.
With their darkvision, they didn't need torches or any other lighting equipment. Following the path, the ground grew increasingly steep. After descending about forty or fifty meters, the view suddenly opened up, revealing a relatively spacious area. It was a large hall, easily three or four hundred square meters in size, but completely disproportionate to its size, the underground hall was empty. There wasn't even a brazier; only a luxurious coffin decorated with gold and jewels lay alone in the center of the hall, exuding an eerie atmosphere.
The dense, hair-raising magical runes wove together into a massive, constantly rotating net throughout the hall, so dense that even a mouse entering would be instantly detected.
“The magical runes here are much denser,” Flora exclaimed. “The materials needed to build a magic circle of this scale must be incredibly expensive.”
“This place is as heavily guarded as a ghoul’s fangs. It seems the Queen’s confidants come every six months to replenish the materials for this magic circle and ensure it keeps running.” Abyss curled his lip. “Even the royal family wouldn’t waste money on a place that no one can see. The Queen must have her reasons for doing this. Things are getting more and more interesting.”
"Now how are you going to get the princess's body out? There should be a magic circle inside the coffin, right?" Flora looked at Abyss, at a loss for what to do. She had a million ways to bring the princess's body out using her most proficient divine magic, but none of them could do it without triggering a magic circle.
“There is still a way. This magic circle can only detect physical objects, but not souls.” Abyss nodded, rubbed the ring on his hand, and released a phantom image of a mage from it.
"My master, what is the matter that you summoned me out?" The mage's illusory figure bowed respectfully to Abyss.
"Travik, do you see the magic circles around us? Can you figure out the magic incantation that corresponds to these circles?" Abyss asked, pointing to the rotating magic runes around them.
The phantom mage named Travik looked around, pondered for a moment, and said, "A seventh-tier spell magnified countless times, Arcane Web, there's one in the coffin too. It's also connected to a communication array."
“That’s right, Arcane Web. I need you to stay here for a month, chanting the Arcane Web incantation backwards during that month, using your magic to temporarily paralyze it,” Abyss said. “It shouldn’t be too difficult for you, and besides, you’re undead now, so you won’t get thirsty or anything.”
"This... is fine... but..."
"Meet your two card-playing buddies." Abyss immediately released the phantom images of two other people, who cheered happily upon seeing Travik.
"Ah, it would be great if someone could play cards with me, Master, leave this to me!" Travik immediately perked up and patted his chest as he promised.
Seeing Flora's confusion, Abyss sent Travik and the other two souls back to the real world while explaining to Flora, "In his previous life, he was an elven mage who had immersed himself in necromancy for many years. Although his own strength was average, he was extremely knowledgeable. I often consulted him on magic other than necromancy. I had him chant the spell backwards so that it would interfere with the detection circle, temporarily halting it and preventing the signal transmission mechanism from being triggered. Moreover, Travik was extremely addicted to cards; he would be very happy as long as someone played cards with him."
Upon being transported to the real world, Travik immediately began playing cards with his two card-playing friends. His mouth was also busy, chanting a string of strangely pronounced incantations because they were read backwards. The magical runes that had been glowing around him actually flickered and went out.
“That’s fine. I’ll go and carry Princess Leona out. You stay here and don’t move.” Abyss also took Flora’s hand, and the two of them left the Underworld together.
Flora obediently stayed where she was, watching Abyss stroll leisurely to the coffin, skillfully lift the lid, and begin groping inside with one hand.
"So he resurrects the dead directly inside the coffin...?"
"Ah, it worked." Abyss smiled contentedly, reaching a hand into the coffin. "Come, grab my hand, come out... uh!"
Before Abyss could finish speaking, a tiny hand suddenly reached out from the coffin, grabbed Abyss's throat, and pulled him straight into the coffin!
Flora covered her forehead. Although she admitted that the Abyss was very strong, incredibly strong, why didn't she feel any surprise at the Abyss's sudden collapse?
Chapter Nineteen: The World's Number One Princess
This was the first time in Abyss's life that he had encountered such a ferocious undead.
The master had once studied the necromancy talent of the Abyss and concluded that this child was born to learn necromancy. He possessed a natural power that would make the undead feel a sense of submission and belonging. Therefore, theoretically, even high-ranking undead with full thinking ability would instinctively have a certain degree of goodwill towards him—at least they would not be hostile to him, let alone attack him on sight.
Abyss, who grew up carefree until the age of sixteen, encountered his first experience of being locked up by a strong man here.
"Cough cough cough! Let go! It's a misunderstanding! It's a misunderstanding!" Abyss tried to climb out of the coffin using both his hands and feet, but a pair of delicate and white arms were tightly locked around his throat. No matter how hard Abyss tried, he couldn't loosen the arms even a little.
Travik, who was chanting incantations nearby, was a little surprised, but he didn't rush to save Abyss. Instead, he continued playing cards with his two card-playing friends without a care in the world.
Flora knew perfectly well that a necromancer like Abyss couldn't possibly die from suffocation, but out of basic concern, she still walked over to the coffin.
"Cough cough! Help me!" Abis struggled as he reached out to Flora, pleading for her help.
At this moment, Princess Leona, the owner of the coffin, peeked out from behind the Abyss—a girl with beautiful silver hair and a youthful face, appearing to be only twelve or thirteen years old. Her arms were short, and judging from the length of her forearms, she was only about as tall as the Abyss's chest. The girl, who was holding the Abyss by the throat, made a small, animalistic whimper, her voice still hoarse. Her two emerald-like eyes remained cloudy and unfocused, suggesting that her actions were entirely instinctive.
"Quickly calm her down! I can't chant the spell!" Abyss stuck out his tongue and desperately squeezed out the words.
"Ah! I understand!" Flora quickly chanted a prayer, and soon, a small halo spread out from Flora's body. Flora's divine magic had worked, and Leona's power inside the coffin was slightly weakened.
Abyss, not even bothering to catch his breath, lay directly in the girl's arms and began chanting a spell: "Leona Pracidia Crepeus! Be my master, obey my command, through the cycle of reincarnation, return to your soul!" Then he turned around and touched Leona's forehead with a finger.
The spell's effects were immediately apparent. Leona's eyes inside the coffin quickly regained focus, and her expression became more rational. She released her hands from Abyss's throat, looked at the ceiling, and seemed lost in thought.
"Phew... finally done..." Abyss breathed a sigh of relief.
"Huh?" Leona, who had just regained her senses, realized that there was a man lying on top of her. "Who are you?"
"Oh, let me introduce myself, I am..."
Boom!
Before Abyss could finish his self-introduction, he was kicked out of the coffin. Flora watched as Abyss flew out of the coffin like a fish out of water, spinning rapidly in the air before splattering face-first onto the ground.
"You audacious scoundrels, how dare you lie on top of me? Where am I now? You have one hour to get me back to my palace, or I'll smash this wretched place to rubble!" Leona, having kicked Abyss away, stood up arrogantly from the coffin, one foot on the edge, speaking in a still-unused voice. Her vocal cords hadn't been used for over forty years, making her high-pitched, slightly cracked voice, which sounded quite comical. "Tsk, why does my throat feel so uncomfortable, and my joints are so tight? Hey, what exactly did you do to me? Tell me the truth!"
Unharmed, Abyss scrambled to her feet: "My princess, may I explain first?"
"What else is there to explain? You lay in my arms while I was sleeping!" Leona patted her perfectly flat chest. "You have tarnished the reputation of a lady, and this matter must be settled by a duel!"
"It wasn't me who wanted to lie in your arms, you pulled me there!" Abyss raised his hands, looking completely innocent. "I woke you up from inside the coffin, and you just dragged me in!"
"Nonsense, you shameless... Wait, how did I end up in a coffin?" Leona looked down and realized that she had one foot on the edge of a coffin. The place she was in didn't seem to be a house for the living.
"You don't know you're already dead, do you?" Abyss's eyes widened. "Really?"
"Believe it or not, I'll kill you!" Leona said angrily, leaping out of the coffin and landing on the ground, staggering slightly because her knees were a little stiff.
Only then did Abyss get a clear look at the legendary aura genius's entire body. Whether in the court portraits Abyss had seen or in his preconceived notions, Princess Leona was always a tall, valiant, and handsome young knight. Abyss had never once imagined that this adult princess, who was already eighteen years old, would look like such a child.
Flora nodded secretly to herself; her judgment was correct. The legendary Princess Leona herself was only a little over 1.4 meters tall.
“I do feel a bit weak before, and then I took a nap…” Seeing that there was no mockery in Abyss and Flora’s eyes, Leona calmed down a little. Ignoring the stiffness in her joints, she paced back and forth. “Could I have died after that? That shouldn’t be… But I’m still alive now… Ah…”
Leona suddenly seemed to remember something and placed her hand on her heart.
Abyss sat on the ground and shrugged helplessly at Leona.
"I'm dead! My heart has stopped beating! Who did this?!" Leona shouted in disbelief. She glanced at Flora, who was standing to the side, not knowing what to do, and then yelled, "Ah! I know you! You're the Holy Maiden of the Holy See! Your name is... your name is Carrot, right? You Holy See! On the surface you cooperate with our royal family, but behind our backs you plotted to kill me?"
"I'm sorry..." Flora instinctively wanted to apologize first.
“Her name is Flora, and she’s no longer a saint. My name is Abyss, and I’m a necromancer. You were resurrected by me. We’re not only no longer connected to the Church, but we’re now mortal enemies.” Abyss finally said before things got any more complicated. “I want you to join us.”
“Joining you is impossible, I will never join you in this lifetime,” Leona said impatiently, but she paused for a moment, crossed her arms and looked at Abyss. “However, I don’t want to fight you for now. Hey you, ABC, can you tell me about the current situation?”
Chapter Twenty: The Princess's Mind Isn't Clear-Headed
"First, you must admit that you are dead, otherwise our conversation cannot continue."
Abyss dusted himself off, stood up, and resumed his usual confident demeanor.
Leona seemed to dislike looking up at the Abyss. She stood there for a moment, then turned around and closed the coffin lid behind her. After stretching her knees a couple of times, she jumped up again. The coffin, along with the platform about 40 or 50 centimeters high, provided Leona with ample footholds. She looked down at the Abyss with a smug expression, as if only from this angle could she communicate with it.
"Fine, since my heart isn't beating anymore, just do as you say and pretend I'm dead."
Leona's voice was still a little hoarse, so she coughed twice to clear her throat.
“Alright, then I will begin.” Abyss then began to speak with his hands behind his back. “You have been dead for forty-two years. You died from an unknown curse. Very few people know this secret. I only heard a few clues from the soul of a court guard who was secretly executed, and then deduced it. Now that I have seen your face with my own eyes, I am even more certain of the cause of your death.”
"Nonsense! I haven't felt any changes in my body. How do you know things that I don't even know myself? Is it just hearsay and wild speculation?"
Leona immediately expressed her disdain to the Abyss. From her expression, it was clear that the princess had never felt that she was cursed—however, most people wouldn't necessarily believe the one-sided story of a boy they had just met, and the Abyss was prepared for this.
“I have irrefutable evidence.” Abyss pointed to Leona’s upper abdomen. “Not long ago, I encountered a necromancer who was turning living people into zombies as guards as he moved towards your tomb. Guess what he was planning to do?”
"Want to have a banquet here?" Leona rolled her eyes. "If you keep me in suspense any longer, I'm leaving."
"He belongs to an organization called the Council of the Dead, and he is on a secret mission to come to your tomb and take away a cursed artifact from your stomach."
Abyss watched as Leona's expression changed upon hearing those words, and instinctively clutched his stomach.
"Oh, don't worry, he's already been torn to pieces by his own zombies, he won't come to open your belly and take your stomach," Abyss smiled to reassure Leona.
"So how do you plan to verify your so-called ironclad evidence?" Leona said. "Don't forget, you still don't have any physical evidence. I, a genius of martial arts, cannot die because of a mere curse. Do you know how strong my vitality is? When I was a child, a horse stepped directly on my chest. If it were an ordinary child, I would have died long ago, but I was able to get out of bed and move around after three days, and I was already running around everywhere on the fourth day."
"That's easy. I'll open up your belly, take out your stomach, and take a look inside."
