Abyss immediately looked around and suddenly discovered that a large number of twisted monsters had appeared in this area. The rubble, broken furniture and other items on the ground were writhing and growing larger, eventually turning into monsters.
Regardless of what the raw materials were, they all eventually turned into a very sticky black mud. And those monsters were very similar to the monsters that the Abyss produced when it cleared out the mutated fruit trees—that is, the unformed Nightmare Spirits.
These monsters charged directly at the Abyss. Without hesitation, the Abyss chanted a spell and stretched out his hand towards them. A large number of bone spikes shot out, some of which pierced through the Nightmare Spirits, while others shot towards Koller.
Koller realized something was wrong when the Abyss raised its hand. He no longer cared about the restrictions on using divine magic and immediately began chanting a prayer in a strange language. His body instantly turned into a wisp of smoke and disappeared again.
Abyss then turned its attention back to Koller's arm, which was still suspended in mid-air. However, its previous actions had bought Koller time, and now the arm was in the hands of a Nightmare. Holding the arm that was tightly gripping the Dream's Edge, it swung it, and a black rift instantly appeared in the air before quickly closing, causing both the arm and the Dream's Edge to vanish without a trace.
The darkness surrounding Abyss vanished in an instant; the Nightmare Lord's domain was no longer here. Abyss felt his mind suddenly clear, as if he had woken from a sleep. He turned his head and could see the street scene. The people coming and going on the street did not react to Abyss or the command post that had been reduced to ruins—this meant that Abyss was now in the Underdark.
"He tore through space and escaped, huh? So he has that kind of ability... What a pity, if only I could have gotten my hands on that treasure." Abyss patted his tattered clothes, still managing a calm smile. "But the result is still quite satisfactory."
Although Koller escaped, the Nightmare Lord's attack, which he thought had seized an opportunity, actually exposed more clues to the Abyss.
Chapter 132 Rebecca's Old Trade
Gylvia's mobilization speech to the guerrillas was a great success. Although there was a slightly unpleasant incident, everyone cheered even more for the princess after she faced the so-called "revealing the truth" magic with composure and stood proudly on the stage.
The guerrilla soldiers didn't know much about divine magic, but that didn't stop them from understanding the common sense that divine magic's power surpassed all other forms of magic. Since the enemy's so-called divine magic couldn't change Gylvia's body, it meant that the princess must be there. This brave princess, even facing the risk of being attacked again by the enemy with an evil curse, was still willing to come and encourage them, deeply moving these ordinary soldiers.
Since it could no longer be concealed, Gylvia even went so far as to publicly announce that her enemy was allied with an evil god from another world. When she first broadcast this news from the stage, it did indeed cause a considerable stir. However, Gylvia then proudly told her soldiers that the Restoration Army was not helpless; the four heroes who served as allies were their crucial support in daring to defy the god, and that they had even now, to some extent, suppressed the power of the evil god who had not yet fully descended.
Gylvia was arguably the first leader in the world to dare tell the people about the extraterrestrial evil god, a move that was undoubtedly very bold, but she was not reckless. First, this matter would not cross the Holy See's bottom line; the Holy See only required the people of the continent to be loyal to the existing Nine Gods, and Gylvia clearly regarded that extraterrestrial evil god as a mortal enemy. Second, since the enemy had chosen to begin direct confrontation, the soldiers should have known this information in advance; continuing to conceal it might lead to some undesirable consequences.
Originally, Gylvia had planned to call Leona and the others out to show them to everyone, but when she found the three girls already busy working downstairs, she gave up on that plan.
They came on orders from the Abyss. Flora and Leona were responsible for Gylvia's safety, in case the enemy deployed powerful assassins; Rebecca had a more important mission: to locate any Nightmare Spirits or followers of the Nightmare Lord who might be lurking within the guerrilla army, once Gylvia's safety was confirmed. The Abyss hadn't been certain whether the Nightmare Lord had enough followers to cause trouble, but this proactive attack by the enemy confirmed that the Nightmare Lord had begun using his followers after the Nightmare Spirits had lost their effectiveness.
The small amount of divine power that Rebecca had extracted from the mutated fruit tree and its fruit used by the Nightmare Lord to produce Nightmare Spirits came into play at this moment: using this divine power as a catalyst, based on the divine power solvent formula she had obtained from the Alchemy Club, she created a special potion that could sense whether a person had any connection with the Nightmare Lord.
This was, of course, thanks to Flora's help later. The clergy of the Holy See possessed a special divine spell that could be used to test the loyalty of a believer. Theoretically, the more devout a person's faith in the Nine Gods, the more divine favor they would receive. Although these differences were insignificant, they still existed. The potions Rebecca was now creating were based on this principle, checking whether any soldiers in the guerrilla legion were still favored by the Lord of Nightmares.
They had a fruitful haul, capturing three Nightmare Lord followers who were hiding within the guerrilla group. With Gylvia's intervention, the guerrilla group's commander naturally agreed to let them take these suspicious individuals away for interrogation.
The guerrillas' morale was high, which was exactly what Givya wanted to see. The guerrillas were not only the bravest warriors in her hands, but also battle-hardened veterans, and their morale had a great impact on the course of the war.
After delivering her speech, Princess Gylvia gave the guerrilla corps a formal inspection and made arrangements for their upcoming attack before heading back to her base.
……
The town of Xiaoduo remains peaceful. Jivia's round trip took a little over a day. The young men of the Restoration Army had mostly finished saying goodbye to their families, and the army had returned to intense training and preparation. When the convoy returned to Xiaoduo Town, it was naturally warmly welcomed by the people. Almost all the townspeople were ready to support the Restoration Army's glorious war to the best of their ability.
Gylvia returned to the command post, followed by three of Abyss's retinues, the imposter Abyss, and a guard who had protected her on the platform earlier.
Leona followed Gvia into the command post, all the way to Gvia's room, and when the guards couldn't see her, she suddenly picked Gvia up and carried her on her back.
If anyone else saw Leona's action, they would be shocked. It was incredibly rude of her to carry the supreme leader of the Restoration Army and the sole legitimate heir to the Kingdom of Ossi on her shoulders without any explanation.
Kegivia showed no surprise whatsoever. When Leona picked her up, she acted as if nothing had happened, her expression even appearing somewhat dazed.
“Your Highness, you can breathe some fresh air now. This trip must have been very tiring.” Rebecca turned around and said to the guard following behind them.
The guard, clad in full armor and concealing her face with her helmet, finally removed it, revealing a beautiful face glistening with sweat. She took a deep breath of fresh air and smiled, "I didn't expect Mr. Abyss to have taken that into account. If I had stayed here as originally planned, or gone on the patrol myself as I intended, there would have been serious problems. But now, everything is perfect."
“The alchemical doll that Rei made is really useful. It can be manipulated at will, and it looks exactly like a real person. It can even simulate breathing and heartbeat.” Leona patted the “Givia” on her shoulder and said with admiration, “It is thanks to this that we can play our enemies with ease.”
“I got the inspiration from the Nightmare Lord’s Nightmare Spirit,” Rebecca smiled slightly. “He can create puppets to control, so why can’t we create such safe substitutes?”
Yes, the one giving the impassioned speech on stage wasn't the real Gylvia, but an alchemical puppet under her complete control. Similarly, the imposter Abyss was another alchemical puppet manipulated by Rebecca. The puppet's inspiration came from the Nightmare. What Rebecca didn't reveal to Gylvia was that her invention also incorporated Flora's divine magic, the Abyss's insights into necromancy—and some of her previous experience as an inventor of adult toys.
This is one of Rebecca's secret weapons in this operation. It was this that allowed Gylvia to avoid being ambushed by the Nightmare Lord's followers and perfectly boosted the morale of the guerrilla soldiers!
Chapter 133 Abyss is injured
Compared to the Nightmare Lord's Nightmare Spirit, Rebecca's alchemical doll possesses many special abilities that the Nightmare Spirit does not have, due to the combination of various advanced technologies.
First, these dolls can perfectly mimic the appearance of a living person, including heartbeat, pulse, body temperature, and breathing. Moreover, because they were created using divine power obtained from Flora, they cannot be turned back into their original form by any magic—the raw materials for these alchemical dolls are water and various medicinal herbs.
It was during her initial attempt to create these alchemical dolls that the Abyss sensed the hesitation of the Nine Gods. They were astonished that Rebecca dared to create such things. If Rebecca were willing to imbue them with souls, she would be directly touching upon the realm of artificial life. Even the Nine Gods dared not do such a thing, for it was the work of the Creator God, and only He could create life at will.
Ultimately, the Nine Gods agreed, bestowing their divine power upon the Abyss to help him and Rebecca complete their experiments. The alchemical puppets that followed were created by Flora, who had infused them with divine power at Rebecca's request. Flora's divine power was purer and many times stronger than the Abyss's, resulting in incredibly lifelike puppets indistinguishable from ordinary ones. The knowledge of necromancer puppetry that the Abyss shared with Rebecca inspired her to perfectly manipulate these puppets.
This doll actually has some other uses, but that involves some of Rebecca's little habits from when she was an adult toy seller, which she doesn't plan to tell anyone yet—it's too embarrassing.
"In short, you have really helped me so much this time, I don't know how to repay you." Jivia had already changed her clothes. Since everyone was a girl, it was no big deal to exchange clothes with the dolls in the room. She wiped the sweat off her body and regained her elegance and composure as a princess. "Our restoration army is about to fight its way back to the Kingdom of Osi. Please be sure to come to our victory celebration banquet when that happens."
"It seems Your Highness is very confident. Don't worry, leave the Lord of Nightmares to us." Rebecca nodded to the confident Gylvia, feeling a sense of heartfelt relief seeing Gylvia in her current state.
Now, Gylvia is completely free of fear. She has overcome her past traumas and become incredibly open and honest. As the leader of the Restoration Army, she carries the future of this nation on her shoulders, and she is no longer filled with confusion. The Lord of Nightmares may not be able to gain anything from her, simply because she, like the Abyss and their group, possesses the courage to confront any formidable enemy.
"The Restoration Army will not lose, for we are the future of Osiris, and history will be written by us," Gylvia solemnly told the three girls. "Next, I will begin to arrange the advance. The time is ripe now. I have also sent the three captured followers of the Nightmare Lord to you. Interrogate them as you see fit. Those who submit to the evil god are no longer my people, and I have no pity for them."
The three traitors who had infiltrated the guerrilla group had been turned to stone by Rebecca with a potion, so they couldn't escape now. Moreover, the Abyss was most likely in the inn, so the girls weren't worried about anything else happening. They just waited for the time to interrogate them.
"Your Highness, please continue with your work and remember to rest. You've finally been able to sleep peacefully like a normal person, so don't waste this wonderful opportunity." Rebecca politely bowed to Gylvia, then, along with Leona and Flora, led the alchemical puppet, whose control had been taken over, away from there. They hadn't seen Abyss for over a day and wanted to talk to him in person about Abos Correl. Abyss had already told them about the assassination attempt during their shared thoughts, and although they had told Gylvia, they themselves hadn't yet learned the specifics.
……
Back at the guesthouse, the three girls saw Cassandra come out to greet them.
Now, Cassandra no longer wears that outfit; she has discarded the scarf that used to cover her face. This is because she has now fully recovered.
Her skin, once severely burned and covered in burn scars, grew new skin after Rebecca used a potion to corrode it. This new skin looked exactly like normal human skin, restoring beauty to her previously grotesque face. To make her look even more natural, Rebecca even carefully added some wrinkles—the reason she didn't erase the wrinkles on her other cheek was simply because Cassandra didn't want to look too young; she believed that the marks of time weren't necessarily a bad thing.
The arm she lost in the fire has now been restored by Rebecca. Rebecca used alchemy to create new artificial bones and muscles, ultimately crafting a magically powered prosthetic arm. Although the new arm has no feeling, it moves very freely and looks no different from a normal person's. Cassandra knows some magic, so she can use the arm with ease.
It's fair to say that Cassandra has now fully recovered. Years of disability have made her realize how precious her current ability is. Now that she's finally able to work, she's started helping Hina and the Restoration Army with whatever tasks she can manage, keeping her quite busy.
“Ms. Cassandra, you’ve arrived?” Flora smiled and bowed to Cassandra. “Her Highness the Princess has returned to the command post.”
“I already know.” Cassandra nodded. “Her Highness must be busy with the march right now, so I won’t disturb her. I was planning to help move some things at the army’s place today. I just saw Haina off, and she’s still busy there. I chatted with Mr. Abyss for a while, and I’m about to leave now.”
"Is the Abyss inside?" Leona asked.
“He’s inside reading. He said he’s waiting for you to come back,” Cassandra said. “He was slightly injured in the previous battle, but he doesn’t seem to be in any serious condition. However, he said there are some things he wants you to know.”
The three girls were immediately puzzled. Even if someone of Abyss's level was injured, as long as it wasn't fatal, he could recover quickly. What could he possibly need them to know?
Leona suddenly felt a chill. Could it be that Abis had some vital part removed during his fight with that guy? Could it be irreversible? It's possible! After all, Abis himself was a eunuch!
She quickly bowed to Cassandra, then hurried towards the Abyss's room: "I'm going to see the Abyss!"
“Let’s go see the Abyss too, Ms. Cassandra. Thank you for your hard work, goodbye.” Flora and Rebecca said goodbye to Cassandra together, and then they went into the guesthouse together.
As soon as they entered the Abyss's room, they saw the Abyss, dressed in new clothes, sitting on a chair looking dejected, showing them a pile of tattered rags that she had just pulled from the mouth of the magic catfish.
Chapter 134 Taking His Scissors
"What is this?" Leona had expected to see some shocking scene of injury, but instead she saw Abyss sitting there displaying a bunch of tattered strips of cloth.
"Wait... don't tell me yet, let me guess." Rebecca stroked her chin with interest, thought for a moment, and said, "This pile of things isn't the outfit you were wearing before, is it?"
“You guessed right.” Abyss sighed. “This is the outfit I wore when I fought with that Apos—or let’s call him Corel. You all already know about his weapon from my previous report; it’s a pair of gardening shears called the Dream Cutter. That thing can split anything in two, or make anything merge into one, and it probably also has the ability to turn objects into nightmare spirits. I suffered quite a bit fighting him.”
As he spoke, Abyss placed a pile of the strips of cloth on the table beside him.
"These are my pants."
He then placed the other strips of cloth on top one by one, saying what they were originally: "This is my shirt, this is my coat, this is my cloak, this is my underwear..."
"Why did you take your underwear out like that! Seriously, there's no need to keep that underwear that's just a tiny piece left!" Leona retorted, blushing.
“I feel so sorry for you all…” Abyss pouted. “You all helped me pick out these clothes. You spent so much time choosing the perfect outfit for me, except for these underwear… I’m sorry, I mixed them up earlier, I don’t want these.”
“What’s there to apologize for?” Rebecca laughed. “I thought something had happened and I was so worried. Turns out it’s just that your clothes got torn. I’ll just buy you another set. If you like, I can buy you a hundred sets without any problem.”
"I mainly feel that these clothes are all your thoughtful gifts, and I should have told you they were damaged," Abys said with an embarrassed smile. "I'm so glad you're not angry."
The three girls breathed a sigh of relief; it turned out that Abyss had not suffered any serious injury.
Flora walked over to Abyss and picked up the two piles of strips of cloth that had once been his shirt and cloak, which he had placed on the table. "Those trousers probably can't be restored, but I can sew up this shirt and cloak for you. As for the shirt, forget it. It's better for you to wear new clothes that are close to your skin. I'm afraid you'll feel uncomfortable wearing it after I sew it up."
"Can you sew it?" Abis looked at Flora with surprise. "You've actually learned to sew!"
“It took me a while to learn, and I can guarantee they'll look brand new once they're sewn together.” Flora smiled gently, cradling the pile of fabric strips in her arms. “However, compared to repairing these fabric strips that you value so much, don't you have something more important to tell us?”
"Ah, right, you all said before that you wanted to hear the details of my battle with Koller, so I'll tell you all about it."
……
Abyss recounted every detail of his battle with Koller to his three followers. Abyss possessed an exceptional memory, and the events were etched into his mind without a single mistake. The perilous situation they had just breathed a sigh of relief was replaced by a renewed sense of dread. Had Abyss not been so prepared, he might very well have been killed by that cunning follower of the Nightmare Lord.
Like the mask used by Bishop Dalan of the Fallen Lord, the Dream's Edge possesses absolute power that cannot be countered by magical strength alone, making battles with its wielder extremely dangerous. The Abyss can only rely on improvisation to counter its attacks; a slight misstep could lead to falling into the trap of Koller—or the Lord of Nightmares.
"So far, these are all the abilities I know about Meng Zhijian. He was seriously injured in the end, but he used the Nightmare Spirits he created to regain the hand that was holding the scissors, and then he cleaved through space and finally escaped." Abyss spread his hands. "This is the first time I've known that someone can escape my Dark Realm, and he didn't seem to have to exert too much effort, although he did look quite disheveled at the time."
“That’s interesting…” Rebecca pondered for a moment, “He can cut through space? Or rather, he can cut through the world?”
“Hmm…indeed, what he cut open was very likely the world.” Abyss thought for a moment after hearing Rebecca’s words, then changed his tune, “He cut open my Netherworld and slipped into some other place through the crack he created. I really should have followed him, but he disappeared too quickly, and the few spies I secretly placed on him during the battle lost contact with me after he entered that crack. Luckily, I didn’t put any undead with souls on him to go with him.”
“Your magical bonds can’t cross worlds, can they?” Leona said seriously, sitting on the bed in the Abyss. “That place is probably the world where the Lord of Nightmares is hiding. It’s His territory, so you have to listen to Him. Of course, your necromancy won’t work.”
Abyss agreed with Leona's point of view: "Yes, that's very likely. So, if I really have the chance to go in next time, I'll need to take some precautions... but I don't know what I'll need to do yet. The next goal is to find Koller's hiding place, then take his Dream Scissors and study them slowly."
“He’s not stupid. Why would he let you find it so easily and then steal Dream's Edge?” Leona immediately pointed out.
“Take your time thinking about it, no rush.” Abis chuckled. “It’s not something I can do right now, but it’s always good to think about it.”
“I’ll also try to think of a way,” Flora said. “He doesn’t know if it will take a while to heal or if he will recover immediately, but I don’t think he will keep us waiting too long. We may need to use some methods to lure him out.”
“We need to think about what he cares about most…” Abyss thought for a moment, “In that case, we need to find out about this man’s life. Before he accompanied Kevin to the throne, this man named Abos Koller was virtually unknown. I only learned his full name by finding a document with his signature in the palace. I knew nothing else. I think it’s necessary to find out why he was a eunuch and why he was a follower of the Lord of Nightmares.”
"Are we going to solve another case?" Leona exclaimed excitedly, swinging her legs happily on the bed. "Take me with you! Take me with you!"
"Of course, let's interrogate those three guys you brought back tonight first. I just threw them into Rebecca's lab. After the interrogation, we'll go ahead with the Restoration Army and have some fun in the Kingdom of Ossi... Maybe we can even get you some local specialties as souvenirs."
