"An alliance??? Haha, the Beastmen are already in dire straits, yet they still dream of forming an alliance with us. Your Majesty, I suggest that we should unite with the Barbarians and the Blood Clan to divide up the Beastmen."
"What? You're all insane? Have you lost your minds? The barbarians and demons are allied, and now you're allied with the barbarians too? Aren't you just getting mixed up with the demons? Aren't you afraid of inviting trouble?"
Lin Xueyin stared in shock at the nobleman who had spoken. How could there be such a low-IQ person in this world? Trying to negotiate with a tiger for its skin—wasn't that just courting death?
"Hmph, isn't allying with the demons exactly what you wanted?"
"What? What do you mean by this?" Staring intently at the man who spoke, if she remembered correctly, this man should be just an ordinary baron. The fact that he was directly confronting her at this moment made her suspect that he might have some kind of conspiracy.
"What do you mean? Viscount Lin, you're smart, but we're not stupid either. When you were in Slummershire, who saved you? Do you need me to help you remember?"
Looking at the bewildered girl before him with a cold laugh, the baron spoke with a mocking expression, "Since you don't want to tell me, then I will tell His Majesty and my colleagues."
"The person who returned Lin Xueyin to our troops was the marshal of the Eastern Legion of the Demon Clan, Krastrom, who was the Eastern Legion that directly faced us. If you have no connection with him, why would he capture you and then return you?"
"I...that's...that's because..."
How the hell should I know? That guy's brain is always malfunctioning. How was I supposed to know why it was returned? I thought I was going to die.
His stammering words only fueled suspicion, but then Irabel spoke with absolute certainty.
"I don't believe Yukine would have any connection with the demons. Don't forget, she's a holy priestess. What would the demons want a holy priestess to do? Commit suicide?"
“Princess, perhaps they don’t need Pastor Lin’s abilities, but rather Pastor Lin himself. After all, a powerful pastor can easily obtain a high position in our empire, so some important intelligence is likely to fall into her hands, isn’t it?”
Volume 8: The Demon King and the Priest: Chapter 1 Slander (Two chapters published together)
Inside the imperial city of the Xima Empire, the council hall was already on the verge of war, and at the center of the storm was Lin Xueyin, who had been working hard to form an alliance to resist the future invasion of the demon race.
She saw it very clearly: the unification of the demon race had become the biggest threat to all the countries. The royal families might know this, but why couldn't the nobles see it? Why were they still fighting amongst themselves? The beastmen had already started a war, and they couldn't hold out for long.
"Viscount Lin, don't you have anything to say? Or have we underestimated your involvement with the Demon Clan? In fact, you were originally the Demon King's subordinate, and you came here to infiltrate our empire as a spy."
A man who was also a viscount walked out from the side, ignoring the baron who had just spoken, and simply cupped his hands and said something.
"The first place Viscount Lin appeared was in the mountains near Yorktown. It was Aria who brought her back and helped Knight Aria defeat the Greedy Wolf Stronghold. I think that's certain. But, Viscount Lin, I'd like to know where you lived before."
Seeing Lin Xueyin's slightly furrowed brows, the viscount continued, "I think His Majesty must have investigated as well, but this priest seems to have fallen from the sky, without a predecessor, suddenly appearing in our empire. Therefore, in such a time of crisis, we really cannot believe her one-sided account."
"Damn it, have you all lost your minds? Can't you see that the fighting in the north is already fierce? Do I need to lie to you? At this time, you still want to kick us when we're down? Aren't you afraid of driving the beastmen to the side of the demons? Then, the human race and the beastmen will truly be locked in a life-or-death struggle."
"A fight to the death? Do the beastmen still have that ability? As long as we take this opportunity to divide up the beastmen with the barbarians and vampires, they will be like lions with their teeth pulled out. What threat will they pose?"
"Ridiculous! A lion with its teeth pulled is still a lion. And what will you do once they join the demons? Are you going to surrender too?"
Feeling as if she were talking to a bunch of idiots, Lin Xueyin was so angry that her breathing became heavy. However, even so, although some of the human nobles showed some signs of thinking, most of them looked at her with suspicion.
"You're saying that if the Beastmen side with the Demons, the Demons will attack us for the Beastmen's sake? That's ridiculous. Can't we form an alliance with the Barbarians and the Vampires to fight against the Demons? That would be much stronger than an alliance with just the Beastmen."
The viscount who had just questioned Lin Xueyin's origins spoke up again, and this idea was like the last straw that broke the camel's back, ultimately leading the nobles to decide the direction the human race should take.
"By allying with the barbarians, aren't you afraid of following in the footsteps of the beastmen..."
"Ha, I'm still wondering, why do you insist that we ally with the beastmen? Do you perhaps hope that we will help the beastmen and barbarians wage war, thereby weakening our human race's strength and giving the demons an opportunity to take advantage?"
These hurtful words turned Lin Xueyin's face ashen. All she had been doing had now been labeled as the actions of a traitor. Her clenched fists clenched tightly, and she longed to smash this man's face in the next second.
"Alright, I believe Pastor Lin didn't mean that. Let's just leave the matter of the alliance with the orcs at that. We..."
"Your Majesty, we have new intelligence."
Just as King Edward was about to announce his decision, a man appeared in the hall with a note, as if he had been there all along, appearing without any warning.
"Oh? Shadow, have you obtained any new information?"
"The Beastmen have sent people to the Demon Clan, but the specific situation is unknown."
Pale, Lin Xueyin's face instantly turned pale. She wanted to laugh, but at this moment she realized that she really couldn't do anything. Was she sad? Humans were like this, and so were beastmen. Sure enough, her own actions were the most ridiculous.
"Like a mantis trying to stop a chariot," I should have known this story long ago, but I still kept showing off. Perhaps those demons I defeated were already waiting for the day of revenge.
"Viscount Lin, you may leave now."
His Majesty Edward suddenly sighed and waved to the somewhat pale-faced girl, signaling her to leave first. This was a temporary measure to protect her. Otherwise, if things continued, these nobles would truly put her to death.
Somewhat dejected, Lin Xueyin walked out of the main hall. Turning back, for some reason, a cold smile suddenly appeared on her face. She realized she needed to think about her future.
"Xueyin. What happened? What did His Majesty and the others say?"
Arya, who had been waiting outside, felt a pang of sympathy as she watched the distraught girl walk toward them, but she didn't know how to ask what had happened.
"Aria, you..."
She glanced briefly at the girl who had always protected her, and suddenly remembered that she still had some things to do; at the very least, she couldn't let them be implicated.
"Xueyin, what exactly happened? What did His Majesty say?"
Seeing Lin Xueyin continue forward without saying a word, Ailiya became anxious, but she didn't know how to get her to tell her everything.
Inside the council chamber, just as King Edward had anticipated, the nobles were not about to let Lin Xueyin off so easily. At the very least, her existence, in a sense, had disrupted the delicate balance between the nobles and the royal family, something the nobles could not tolerate.
"Your Majesty, I suggest that Lin Xueyin be arrested immediately, so as to reduce the losses of our human race."
"Losses? What have we humans lost? What have you lost because of Xueyin?" Irabel was furious when she heard that the other party still wanted to kill them all. Her eyes were blazing with intense fire.
"Hmph, isn't she already preparing to sell out our human race? I don't believe that with her previous insight, she can't see who is more suitable to ally with at this time. What, does Your Highness want to put personal matters aside for public duty?"
"you...."
"Alright, we're only suspecting things for now. Viscount Lin has made great contributions to our empire. Are we going to erase those contributions? Without solid evidence, we can't let our soldiers lose heart."
King Edward seemed unwilling to continue the conversation, but the nobles did not want to let the woman go so easily. At the very least, the last civil war had caused them great losses because of her, and they were determined to avenge her. Moreover, some people wanted that woman to die here.
Thinking of the promises made to her by the nobles who had been targeting Lin Xueyin, she felt that she already had a bright future.
“Your Majesty, it is better to kill the innocent than to let the guilty go free. This is a sensitive time. Viscount Lin has some prestige in the army. If something happens to her, it could easily lead to a problem with the army's morale. Therefore, I suggest that we arrest Lin Xueyin first, so that we can slowly interrogate her to find out what her purpose is.”
"I disagree."
As the crown prince, Ikux knew he had to make his stance clear when he saw that some nobles had been persuaded. At this moment, if he made a mistake, Lin Xueyin's future would be incredibly dark.
Who knows what fate awaits a young girl imprisoned under the control of those nobles? At least, he didn't want Lin Xueyin to suffer the same fate.
“Your Highness, I know you and Viscount Lin have a good relationship, but this should not allow you to act on your emotions. If she really is a spy for the Demon Clan, it will be a disaster for us. You should know how she confronted the Saint-level among the Beast Clan.”
"You know that Viscount Lin is comparable to a Saint-level expert. Aren't you afraid that a great battle will break out with a Saint-level expert during the capture? Can the capital city withstand the losses from such a battle?"
Ikux stared at the nobles in disbelief. She knew that the other party was a powerful priest who dared to send people to arrest her. Wasn't this clearly trying to force her to rebel? Once a battle between Saint-level beings broke out in the city, no one could protect Yukine.
Ikux understood, and so did Irabel; her already cold and pretty face turned even more ashen. She stared intently at the man, wishing she could slap all the nobles who had raised this suggestion to death.
“Your Majesty, I have a few anti-magic rings. If Pastor Lin can wear these anti-magic rings and stay in his house temporarily, we can refrain from arresting him and only conduct an investigation. This way, both sides can compromise. Is that acceptable?”
At this moment, an earl stepped forward. Although he was not a marquis with any real power, the title itself was a display of status. There were only a few dukes in the empire, and below them were a small number of marquises. The words of a marquis could indeed make the king consider the other party's opinion.
"But if we make her wear the anti-magic ring, it might cause a rift with Yukine. What if she doesn't agree?"
Irabel still couldn't agree. This was going to put Lin Xueyin under house arrest. Didn't these people feel any remorse when they did this?
However, her excitement did not bring any results, but instead drew everyone's attention to her. Especially when she saw the scheming look on the marquis's face, her unease grew.
“Your Highness, I believe that only you can handle this matter smoothly. I think your relationship with Lin Xueyin should prevent her from resisting too much.”
She cursed inwardly. Sure enough, these people had their eyes on her. But how could she have the right to refuse at this point?
"Irabelle, you should go there. Take your personal guards with you and make sure Lin Xueyin is safe. Tell her that we will not let her suffer any injustice."
She wouldn't let her suffer any injustice; doing this was just making things unfair and humiliating for her. Irabel really wanted to refuse this task, but seeing her father's expectant eyes, she could only loosen her clenched fists again.
"I understand, Father. I will negotiate with Yukine properly."
Just as the human race had finalized the decision to have Irabel place Lin Xueyin under house arrest, the demon race was not idle either. Elufina looked at the basement she had prepared, glanced at the props she had prepared for that disobedient little girl, and a satisfied smile appeared on her face.
Everything is ready except for the final push; now we just need to see when the orcs will finally understand.
"Your Majesty, the envoys from the Beastmen are on their way. Shouldn't we prepare as soon as possible?"
While still thinking about the orcs, he heard his captain of the guard report the orc envoys' movements. Sure enough, they were about to bow down to him. In that case, the battle in the north would be over. Very good, really very good.
"Your Majesty, this is the latest intelligence we have received. Please take a look."
Taking advantage of the moment when Elufelna received the intelligence, the captain of the guard carefully examined the basement, which was supposedly built specifically for that human priest.
Four enormous, menacing snake heads were placed in the center of the wall, while the dimly lit room was filled with all sorts of "props" that would make anyone blush just looking at them.
I wonder if that poor priest felt weak in the knees when he saw this scene. However, it's best not to be too curious about the Demon King's hobbies.
"So, what do you think of the little house I built? Not bad, right? Any suggestions?"
“Your Majesty, you jest. I am quite skilled in interrogation, and my advice on this matter might very well bring back some unpleasant memories for the Princess.”
After a slight pause, Elufelna laughed loudly and waved for the captain of the guard to leave. She wasn't wrong; although this could calm her resentment a little, she still felt a pang of heartache at the thought of actually throwing her in here.
She casually placed the intelligence she was holding on a table to the side, then walked to a hanging rack, her inscrutable eyes revealing a deep contemplation.
A moment later, his gaze returned, a fleeting glint of light in his eyes, accompanied by an aura that made the demon king's thoughts even more unpredictable.
"The Barbarian King ambushed Xueyin, almost causing her death at the hands of the Beastmen. It would be better to resolve this matter first. As for the North? Perhaps the Barbarians are somewhat superfluous."
With a faint, cold smile, Elufina slowly walked towards her council chamber.
"Summon the leaders of the intelligence department and the general staff to me. Tell them I have important orders to give them and that they should come as soon as possible."
As soon as the words were spoken, a faint ripple appeared in the air, as if something had disappeared from there.
Volume 8: The Demon King and the Priest: Chapter 2: House Arrest
"Xueyin, what happened? Tell me! Whatever it is, I'll face it with you."
All the way back, Ailiya kept asking Lin Xueyin questions. Finally, she returned with her to her residence in the capital. Seeing Lin Xueyin sitting in the middle chair with a heavy heart, Ailiya couldn't hold back and slammed her hand heavily on the table next to her.
"Xueyin, what's wrong? Just say it. What's the point of keeping it to yourself?"
"Um, I'm sorry to have worried you. I was thinking about whether we should bring Ariel and Lilia back, since they're still with the Feather Clan."
"In that case, I'll send someone to bring them back right away."
Hearing that Lin Xueyin seemed preoccupied because of this matter, Ailiya patted her chest and assured her that she would definitely be able to bring the two sisters back.
"You should go yourself and bring Kaliel and Kashael back with you. It's quite a long journey, and I'm a little worried about letting others handle it."
Ailiya had a feeling that Lin Xueyin was hiding something from her, but after thinking about it carefully, she realized that now that they were in the human realm, no one would be so foolish as to target Xueyin. Besides, Princess Irabel and Prince Ikux were her backers, so she shouldn't be in any danger.
"Alright, I'll go there myself. Don't worry, I'll bring those four little girls back to you safely."
