They lost their way.

At this time, the port's lighthouse should guide them and give them hope.

But the lighthouse malfunctioned. The old lighthouse in the harbor used oil lamps as its light source, requiring the lighthouse manager to manually operate the spring mechanism to rotate the lens system that concentrates the light so that it could shine its light very far in the pitch-black night.

The fisherman was in a panic in the dead of night. He could vaguely see the boat by the light, but he accidentally knocked over the oil lamp while operating it.

To make matters worse, due to his carelessness, the spare oil drum was left in the open, and the oil inside had mixed with rainwater.

By the time the fishermen finally managed to relight the lighthouse, the merchant ship had already been swallowed by the merciless sea...

After this incident, the fisherman fled before dawn. He knew that someone must have noticed that the lighthouse had been out for a long time, a serious dereliction of duty involving more than a dozen lives.

From then on, the fisherman changed his name and came to this peaceful town, becoming an ordinary fisherman.

However, he felt very pained and guilty, and often thought about the incident; finally, not long ago, he chose to go to the church and confess to the priest.

Of the four penitents, number four was arguably the one with the least subjective malice, yet he caused the most deaths.

"Father, please bless me. I, a sinner, wish to repent within the church." Chu Jiang made the sign of the cross on his chest.

"May the Holy Spirit shine upon your heart, so that you may sincerely confess your sins and receive the grace of the merciful Father," the priest said fluently.

Next, Chu Jiang took the initiative to confess his sins, explaining what he had done to atone for his sins since his last confession.

The fisherman donated some of the leftover fish to an orphanage; he also rescued a drowning traveler yesterday.

The priest paused for a moment after listening. Saving someone's life is already a valuable act of atonement. Should they let this sinner go?

Unexpectedly, at that moment, the nun beside the priest said, "No, Father! He is a sinner, and too many people have died because of him. The families of those who died were torn apart, and their cries still seem to echo in our ears. Just because he saved one person, should his sins be forgiven?"

"If you pardon him, he will live out the rest of his life in peace and happiness, and will even go to heaven to enjoy bliss after death. Is this what you want to see?"

As the priest listened, his expression began to twist.

"Think about it, think about your poor parents, who were brutally murdered when you were just a child. If that sinner hadn't come to you, confessed, and told you the truth of what happened back then, you wouldn't have been able to avenge this hatred."

“You are a priest, you have a duty, and the church rules require you to keep secrets. No matter how sinful it is, you cannot report it to the sheriff.”

"But think about it, if you don't do this kind of thing, who will?"

“Give him a verdict! A verdict on earth, even if it means going to hell after death. Forgiveness and pardon are things that God, my Lord, should do. You just need to send him to meet God.”

The nun's voice was devilish and inflammatory, and she quickly convinced the priest to make a decision.

Even at this moment, Chu Jiang remained calm.

In the Catholic Church, there is an absolute rule: the Church will never reveal the secret of confession.

This is because if a priest were to reveal the secret, believers would no longer trust the church and would no longer seek confession from priests.

Another important factor is that the church is governed in a family-like manner. In the Bible, the church is a large family with God as the head of the household. Believers address each other as brothers and sisters and regard the priest as a father figure.

If a priest denounces a believer, it is equivalent to a father denouncing his son, which is absolutely intolerable to the church and will seriously damage the church's prestige.

Therefore, even if a priest hears a secret about murder during confession, he usually only tries to persuade the sinner.

The priest in the play had always done the same thing. But one day, a special penitent came to the church.

The confessor's recounting of sins immediately reminded the priest of his own childhood experiences. Could he be the one who murdered his parents?!

Just then, a mysterious nun appeared beside the priest. She helped him find evidence and finally confirmed that the murderer was indeed this guy.

Finally, the enraged priest, guided by the nun, cruelly executed the penitent; this was the first person he had killed.

The priest regretted it afterward, but the nun's meticulous care helped him emerge from the shadows and turned him into a cold-hearted person.

He resolved to become a righteous figure in the darkness; since the priest could not reveal the confessor's secret, then he would let the guilty confessor die by his own hand.

That's how the story unfolded...

"The merciful Father in heaven, through the death and resurrection of His Son, reconciled the world to Him and granted the Holy Spirit the forgiveness of sins. May He forgive you and give you peace through the service of the Church. Now, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, I forgive your sins."

Chu Jiang made the sign of the cross again, "Amen."

The priest nodded slightly. "The Father has forgiven your sins, but you cannot go back yet."

At this moment, Chu Jiang feigned surprise. According to the confessional procedure, this line should be: "Heavenly Father has forgiven your sins; go home in peace."

Chapter Ninety-One: The Actor's Self-Cultivation

"What, are you surprised?" The priest adopted a cold expression.

He stood up and went to the other side where Chu Jiang was, now holding a blood-dripping axe.

Chu Jiang then put on a show of fear and got up to back away; however, the confessional was small and the only exit was blocked by the priest.

“Fisherman, although you sincerely repent, the sins you have committed are still unforgivable. I wish that you will go to heaven after you die and receive the Lord’s forgiveness.”

"But now, you must accept your punishment on earth."

"Come here obediently, or I'll execute you right now!"

The priest took a step back, gesturing for Chu Jiang to come out with him.

Chu Jiang seemed to have no choice but to follow the other party's lead, after all, the priest had such a large weapon in his hand.

And so, Chu Jiang was taken hostage by the priest and led to the second-to-last room in the right wing.

In this room is a heavy millstone, suspended in mid-air by several thick iron chains.

What was to come was self-evident: the priest would kill the arrogant man by bearing a heavy burden, for nothing was more fitting than crushing a sinner to death with a millstone.

During this process, the mute man had secretly arrived outside the room without anyone noticing.

He slightly opened the door a crack and just saw Chu Jiang carrying a millstone on his back, spitting out a mouthful of blood, dying on the spot.

This terrified the mute man, who could no longer tolerate it and was determined to report the priest to the sheriff!

So the mute man turned and ran.

Unexpectedly, the nun shouted, "That mute saw it! Quick, chase after him and kill him! I told you not to keep him alive!"

Upon hearing this, the priest immediately rushed out of the room...

After waiting for five minutes and confirming that the priest and the others would not return, Chu Jiang, who was "dead," opened his eyes. He easily rolled over and overturned the heavy millstone to the ground, and he did not appear to be injured at all.

Even the blood he spat out wasn't Chu Jiang's own, but rather that of Penitentiary Number One.

At this moment, Chu Jiang didn't care about the taste of blood in his mouth. He rushed to the last room in the left side hall as fast as he could.

Two people died in this room, Confessors Number One and Number Three, both of whom committed the sin of greed.

At this moment, Lin Qian lay prone next to the gambler's corpse, looking as if he had really died, with a large amount of blood flowing from beneath him.

"Get up quickly." Chu Jiang patted Lin Qian on the shoulder.

Lin Qian, who had been pretending to be a corpse, opened his eyes in surprise upon hearing the familiar voice.

Then he turned over in pain, “That damned priest, he was really ruthless. Even though I was prepared, I still got a cut on my chest. Luckily, there was a blood bag to cushion it, so the wound wasn’t deep.”

"If you're alright, get up quickly. This drama is almost over; the real trouble is about to begin." Chu Jiang reached out and pulled Lin Qian up from the ground.

What happened before was simple: since the two people's deaths could not be changed, Chu Jiang would not change anything.

Since it's all just a theatrical performance, does the priest really intend to check whether someone was actually killed? A little blood, a scream, and that's about it; the audience can't stand anything too gory.

The same applies to Chu Jiang's death. Although his supernatural powers were sealed, his physical strength had been permanently altered by the Blood Hand Ghost, and this part could not be sealed away.

Therefore, the so-called heavy millstone could not crush Chu Jiang at all; he could lift five or six more.

Of course, actors still need to maintain their professionalism. At the moment the millstone came down, Chu Jiang held the blood hidden in his sleeve in his mouth and spat it out.

In this way, even if there are audience members present, they will assume that the character is dead.

As for the source of the blood, it naturally came from unlucky gamblers, which is why Chu Jiang made a special trip here before.

The church had readily available containers for blood; Chu Jiang filled a test tube with it, while Lin Qian filled a water bag and stuffed it into his chest to ensure that a single axe blow would draw blood.

Although Lin Qian suffered a minor injury, it was all worth it. Even now, as the two of them got up, the ghost still didn't bother them, but continued to act out the final part of the story.

The story of the mute man is simple: he was a penitent whose sins were not so serious.

The mute man had never killed anyone, but due to a quarrel, he caused his colleague to serve twenty years in prison, almost ruining his colleague's life.

After that confession, the nun kept urging the priest to kill the mute man.

However, the priest still retained some humanity in his heart. Since the mute man had never killed anyone, he naturally could not be killed directly to atone for the crime.

So the priest decided to disfigure the mute man, preventing him from speaking for the rest of his life, and to have him work as a volunteer in the church for the rest of his life to atone for his sins.

This is where the problem arises: if the mute man were a person with courage, or a vicious criminal, he certainly wouldn't do as the priest asked and would fight the priest to the death.

But the mute man was different. He was a good person, and the guilt in his heart tormented him day and night. The priest's punishment of the mute man actually made him feel less pain, and he felt that this was the retribution he deserved.

It was precisely because the mute man was so kind that the priest could not bring himself to kill him, and ultimately resolved the matter in this compromise.

If the mute boy had shown even the slightest dissatisfaction after being punished, the priest would have killed him, but the mute boy did not...

After Chu Jiang and Lin Qian met up, they tiptoed outside and eventually arrived at the church entrance, which was the final scene of the stage play.

The mute man felt that the priest was beyond saving, having completely degenerated into a devil, even killing the fisherman who was relatively less bad.

So the mute man escaped from the church and tried to run to the sheriff to report him.

However, he did not get very far before the priest caught up with him.

At that moment, the priest was riding on the back of the terrified mute man, his axe raised high!

But it never fell behind...

"Hurry! Chop him down, he deserves to die, he is guilty. Just one swing of the axe and it will all be over. No one will know what happened in the church."

The nun stood beside the priest, urging him on in a seductive tone.

The priest's expression changed; he gritted his teeth, wanting to chop it off hard.

But the terror and fear in the mute man's eyes, as well as everything he had done in the past, all surfaced in the priest's memory.

The mute man was such a good person. Although he was not good with words and was ugly, and the other believers were afraid of him, the children were not afraid of him at all; instead, they surrounded him. This is the best proof of that...
