However, if someone actually helps to collect the remains of their ancestors and send them back, they will remember this favor, both publicly and privately. With this favor, it will be much easier to obtain aid from the border of the Great Yan and to dispel the resistance from the people of the Great Yan caused by public opinion.

Rusty Badge: Reduces the resources required by operators below 5 stars by 2, and additionally reduces the deployment cost by 2 for Great Flame operators; "The rusty iron badge, the name on it blurred and illegible, seems to embody some kind of indomitable will."
Ancestral Legacy: Required resources for operators below six stars -2; "The relics of the warriors of the expedition. Perhaps in distant lands, there are those who eagerly await the return of their heroic spirits along with these tattered armors."
Chapter Thirteen: White Rabbit Goes to Battle
Chapter XIII
After several hours of driving and fighting, the convoy finally arrived at the outpost and began unloading equipment and supplies, preparing to expand the outpost into a forward base. The vehicles were covered in wounds inflicted by demons and stained with dark gray fluids; one vehicle's mobility system was damaged, and it could only be pulled along by chains attached to the lead vehicle.
"Are these all relics from the Great Yan Dynasty that have been cleared out?" Old Xia looked at the large pile of broken copper and iron in the laboratory. The doctor and Ling were also there. Every piece of equipment and armor looked very damaged, but the rust and corrosion were relatively good.
“The standard repeating crossbow of the Great Yan Dynasty is of little value.” Ling picked up a folded hand crossbow, looked at it, and threw it into the delivery box next to him.
“But we have to keep this. By the way, do you have this kind of equipment over there?” Ling looked at Lao Xia, who was a little confused. “What kind of weapon is this, a laser gun?” It did look like a laser, at least not a kinetic weapon, because it was basically a flat box without a muzzle.
"No, it's a sword." Ling twisted the gunstock-like structure at the end, only to find that it was stuck inside. Even after clearing away the dirt and ice, it still had varying degrees of damage.
"Let me fix it." Ling began to activate her powers to repair the equipment, which was in a similar state of malfunction. With the click of the machine being repaired, she quickly pulled a flat metal piece out of the box.
"High-vibration sword?"
"The utility knife," Dr. [name omitted] added, "is primarily used for cutting sheet metal and metal; it's part of a survival tool kit."
"Is it still usable?"
“It’s no use, the power system is severely damaged.” The doctor looked at the hilt. “However, the material can be recycled; it’s a blade made of ultra-hard ceramic alloy.”
“Ceramic alloy? Ceramic metal? That can’t be recycled.” Old Xia shook his head. “This kind of thing is ruined if it’s melted down, unless you break it up and grind it into small pieces to use as bulletproof plates or gaskets, but that’s not very useful.”
"Put it in the recycling area. Take it back for exhibition or sell it. I believe quite a few arms dealers would be interested." The doctor put the re-sheathed utility knife into the recycling area, where an operator would come to take it away shortly.
"So, these relics are generally no longer usable?"
“There are still some usable parts, it’s just that the relics in the cemetery area are usually more damaged.” Ling took out a brass-colored sphere from the pile of junk. “It’s a standard smart grenade of the Great Yan Dynasty, but I don’t recommend using it. It’s best to find an opportunity to repair it.”
"It is indeed a smart grenade, produced by the Arctic Military Industry. It is a non-lethal type that releases high-energy ultrasonic waves to stun surrounding creatures. It is an explosion-proof product." The doctor quickly recognized the grenade.
“In contrast, you’ll have to identify this one; neither of us knows what it is.” The doctor had brought Lao Xia here for the purpose of finding the large relic that the Patriots had recovered, which was placed in the center of the makeshift relic laboratory.
It has a silver-white outer shell, four thin metal pillars at the tail that look like antennas, no openings on the surface, and the bottom may have been torn open by a demon, or it may have been a huge rift that broke off from some other entity.
"No need to look, it's empty inside." Old Xia knew what it was after just one glance. "It's worthless, completely scrapped. The only useful thing is the metal material, a lightweight titanium-based heat-resistant alloy, the kind commonly used on spaceships."
"What kind of device is this?"
"The domestic water tank, usually located on the side of the living quarters or passenger cabins, is a very basic design that doesn't even have a circulation unit. It was probably a piece of debris that fell from the Windrunner." These water tanks are generally used to supply domestic water for the crew and to store and recycle purified water. For cargo ships and passenger/cargo ships, the internal loading space and efficiency are linked, so these facilities are all located on the surface of the hull.
What if you get hit by a meteorite or something? Nothing much, just bad luck. For the rest of the journey, just be prepared to use a washbasin to collect water from the water-cooling circuit. You only need to hold out for a maximum of 70 hours before the spaceship can jump to the nearest port for repairs and resupply.
Starships with faster-than-light travel capabilities typically don't need to be compared to those that need to fly for decades or even centuries in terms of redundancy design. They can always find a docking point for resupply and maintenance—provided they don't travel on sparsely populated outer ring routes.
Even on the outer ring route, the water in the water-cooled pipes can sustain it for quite some time until it reaches the port area of the outer ring. In fact, this component is the least important part of the spaceship.
"Heat-resistant alloys are indeed useless. However, the fact that this water tank is here suggests that there might be more spaceship wreckage nearby."
"Who knows?" Old Xia spread his hands, explaining that the search and rescue difficulty was completely different between a warehouse structure with beacons and small fragments without beacons.
"However, if the water tank is here, it means there might be some debris in the living pod nearby. I suggest there's no need to search for it intentionally." The living pod doesn't contain much technology; it has furniture, beds, a circulation system, a food cooking machine, and maybe even a food storage cabinet, but that's about it.
"If it's the living quarters of a warship, I could suggest looking for one, but these passenger and cargo ships..." are no different from civilian steamships, the living quarters aren't anything special.
"Let's just dismantle it. These metal materials are still somewhat useful, but that's about it." Old Xia's electronic furnace can produce this material itself; otherwise, his arc jet engine and the rockets recently launched by Kazdel would never have succeeded.
After the remaining relics were identified, cleaned, recovered, and repaired by the technical team, they were divided into several parts. One part was sent back to Dayan, mainly consisting of items with political and commemorative value.
For example, documents, identity tags, personal ornaments, and relics. Although there were many gold and silver items and antiques among them, the doctor still asked them to put them all in a box and hand them back to Da Yan. He didn't ask for their help, but only asked them not to cause trouble because of their relationship.
One part consists of recyclable artifacts of some value. Some of these need to be recycled, while others are sent back to Kazdel for exhibition, hoping to swindle some funding or something.
Finally, there are the items with repair value, such as the smart grenade and the remains of a Great Flame machine soldier that were found. After being pondered by a group of tech gurus, the latter was transformed into an exoskeleton power device, which they plan to sell to a sucker in Ursus.
The ideal buyer would be the Black Serpent, now disguised as Koshenna; he'd definitely be interested in the goods. The construction of the forward base took a whole day: a supply depot, a field hospital, a research station, a makeshift laboratory, and defensive walls—everything was there; at least a small number of demons shouldn't be able to take it down.
The exploration team can now officially set off to conduct further exploration and technical assessment of the suspicious areas previously explored by the vanguard team. The first stop is a cave located about 2 kilometers away from the forward base.
The cave was located deep beneath a rocky hill. Patriots tried to explore it for a while but found it might be an underground facility, so they stopped and waited for the main force to arrive.
Along the way, the vanguard team was responsible for clearing the way. Now that there were more people, there were also more demons blocking the way. However, no aggregates appeared; they were all ordinary demon fragments.
Those scale-like monsters were named "Demon Fragments - Scale Type" by the researchers. This data was sent back simultaneously, relayed by the Arctic Behemoth, and then sent back to Kazdel, where it communicated with Ursus and Great Flame to update the demon database.
The Great Yan Celestial Master's Mansion was very interested in this, after all, this was the first time in many years that the Terrans had ventured deep into the Arctic. These new demon data and images would be of great use to the Great Yan. The Celestial Master's Mansion overruled objections and paid out of its own pocket to obtain this information from Kazdel, and stored it for further research.
The flanking team responsible for protecting the technical group was not faring much better, with small demonic fragments constantly attempting to attack from the surrounding area. However, thanks to the presence of the support team, most of these attacks were repelled.
However, this also exhausted everyone's energy and consumed a lot of ammunition in just two kilometers. It has to be said that the doctor's step-by-step approach, leaving guide poles and preparing to set up camp every few steps, was extremely inefficient in terms of exploration, but it did ensure safety.
Moreover, it is very much in line with the current situation. After all, when you are under attacks that are not exactly everywhere, but rather densely packed, every step forward in the perilous graveyard area requires a considerable amount of physical and mental effort.
Upon arriving at the designated target location, an even bigger surprise awaited them. A demonic aggregator with a bloated belly emerged from the cave, most of its body still inside. Its exposed appearance resembled a giant mosquito, and its sharp proboscis immediately unleashed a barrage of fire at the vanguard team.
"Holy crap!" Ghost Shark dodged the sweeping silver water line with astonishing agility, almost turning from a D-cup to an A-cup. The water line left a deep trench in the ground.
"Frontline to draw attention, flanks to watch out for the Demonic Splits! Support team, suppress fire!" The Doctor issued orders methodically. The frontline team consisted of Guard and Vanguard operators, who moved swiftly and directly confronted the large number of splits and fragments released from the abdomen of the Demonic Aggregate II.
More demons crawled out from beneath the cemetery's soil, charging towards the exploration team, only to be stopped by the flanking squad. "Damn it, I shouldn't have switched jobs!" Razer used his shield to hold back a demon fragment, which looked like some kind of hound born from the Dimensional World.
Its entire body is made of black crystals, without a single smooth curve. It is called a hunting dog only because it barely resembles a four-legged creature.
Although not very strong, any part of its body can become a sharp rope arrow. Operators hit by it will be pulled towards the hounds, or vice versa, with the hounds taking the opportunity to pounce.
"Is this the time to say such things? You should have resigned before you even boarded the ship!" Franka's molten sword severed the Hound Tongue fixed to the Razer Shield with a single strike, and then Razer used Shield Bash to knock the monster away. Just as she was about to smash its head with the "High Voltage Electric Baton that you can learn to breakdance without much effort or trouble" in her hand, an orbital missile directly blasted half of the monster's body off.
"What? I'm pretty accurate, aren't I?" Old Xia raised his Falcon rifle and aimed at the next target. Military training is a basic obligation for every Star Alliance citizen. In fact, most Star Alliance people have learned how to use and maintain individual weapons and armor, as well as basic shooting, grenade throwing, and drone operation.
Although these things are generally not used in the military, they can effectively prolong one's life if a colony is attacked. After all, aliens have not signed the Geneva Convention, nor do they have any rule against attacking civilians. Being unarmed and not resisting will only make it easier for the enemy to kill you.
“Doctor, you have no combat capability, please retreat…” Ace from the flanking team turned around and saw the Doctor raise his hand, and a beast made of Originium alloy appeared beside him. “The same unmanned combat unit as the M3, I made it.”
As Kal'tsit's "mentor" and the founder of Rhodes Island, he taught her more than half of Kal'tsit's knowledge and skills. It is very reasonable that the Doctor can also deploy M3, otherwise he would not be able to tear apart dozens of enemy units that broke through the defense line by hand, right?
"Won't the doctor ask you for patent fees?"
"She's only the second author on this paper," the PhD student said calmly. "So, don't worry too much about us. Focus on your task, Ace."
"learn!"
Indeed, everyone in the technical and even medical teams is a talent, possessing unique skills. Even the seemingly weakest, Lao Xia, can pull out a rifle and shoot down several flying demonic floating entities, not to mention the others.
The emergency medical team's speed in tearing apart demons was no slower than the Doctor's by a few seconds. Grandia and the Stranger were respectively stronger than Skadi and were like mobile electromagnetic cannons.
In comparison, the combat effectiveness of the heavily armed flanking squad seemed rather insignificant.
Liskarm and Franka are responsible for restraining the hounds and cutting off their "tongues" to kill the target. They are considered to be the more capable ones in the flanking team. Most of the other operators can only barely block the hounds and the attacks of the raptors that swoop down from the air.
"Everyone, look over here, it's fireworks time!" The cute succubus blinked her right eye, raised her right hand high to make a V sign, and pressed the detonator hard with her left hand. "Boom!" Several hounds exploded from the inside. No one knew how she managed to stuff the Originium bomb inside.
"You bastard!" Shining spun around to avoid the bomb that exploded almost touching his feet.
“Directional bombs, I’m a professional at that.” W had placed bombs around the medical and technical teams, and had also previously placed some small, sticky Originium bombs around the area.
Because it looks just like a regular Originium block, when the demon reassembles and crawls out to absorb the surrounding Originium particles to form its body, it naturally also wraps these things created by W into its body.
"Yelena, help the Patriots!"
"Helping!" The rabbit, with a lollipop in her mouth, swung her long legs and quickly passed through the crowd. With a wave of her tactical staff in her left hand, a ball of extreme cold material turned the demon that pounced on her into an ice sculpture. Before it could break free, the electromagnetic shotgun in her right hand shattered the thing with a single shot.
"Give me some water!"
"Roger that!" Wendy activated her fire hose. "Make way, 'Ice Age' is here!" Yelena tapped her tactical staff on the jet of water, and instantly the water turned into countless ice shards that shot out, gradually sealing the demonic agglomeration with ice.
"Well done," Patriot finally didn't have to be a firefighter cutting down those muscle tentacles that were always trying to whip others. He took two steps back and held his halberd horizontally.
"Skadi?"
"Hmm," the little orca also raised its molten sword. This aggregate was much larger than the previous one, and one person probably couldn't take it down.
"Let's attack together!" Frostnova sheathed her gun and tactical staff, drew her professional combat staff from behind her back, and forcefully stabbed it into the ground, gripping it tightly with both hands. "Frost Blast!"
The heat plundered by the Originium condensed particles erupted instantly, causing the ice block to evaporate rapidly. The high-pressure steam completely shattered the ice block, and the flying ice shards swept across the demonic sub-bodies like saw blades, while many more pierced deeper into the demonic aggregate under the pressure of the explosion.
The demonic aggregate, which had just broken free from the ice, tried to pull out its tentacles to lash out. However, "Frozen!" The water vapor turned into frost once again, firmly fixing its lower half to the ground. The Originium energy pillar on the battle staff also lit up with a low energy warning.
Originium Arts isn't some strange thing that defies thermodynamics. Frostnova's combo of freezing, evaporating, exploding, and freezing again is actually equivalent to a super-powerful air conditioner going from cooling to heating and then back to cooling—the electricity consumption is quite astonishing.
In terms of weapons, the Originium batteries that were just filled up are now completely burned out. But it doesn't matter, replacing the batteries only takes a few seconds. She carried a backpack full of a dozen or twenty battery packs just for burning.
Unable to retract its tentacles, it can only deform its head, which means giving up its water cannon attack. "Take this axe!"
Ghost Shark let out a roar, and its spinning axe shattered the demon's transformation. Skadi and Patriot's attacks then tore the massive demonic agglomeration apart, revealing a crystalline core that pulsated like a heart.
"Shark, when did you learn this skill?"
"Hey, just now~" Ghost Shark scratched his head, suddenly finding the axe throwing quite fun, indicating that the feel was amazing.
"Oh, go and retrieve the weapon yourself and maintain it later," Gladys said expressionlessly. "As a warrior, you should know how to take care of your weapon. I'm not stopping you from doing this because the value of a weapon is to protect the warrior and complete the mission. However, the maintenance afterwards is your responsibility." Specter's expression visibly fell.
"I have to say, slaying demons is really boring. There's no taste of blood. I want to see rivers of blood!" Specter's madness was starting to get out of control again. The intense battle was causing her negative traits to surface. Luckily, Skadi was there and managed to suppress her rant.
After the aggregate was cleared away, the vanguard team, now freed up, worked with the others to deal with the remaining, dwindling numbers of demons one by one. Since there wasn't enough time to burn them, Frostnova froze them one by one, piled them up, and waited for further processing.
"I have a feeling this was a premeditated ambush." Otherwise, the vanguard group wouldn't have encountered so few demons before, but they were immediately surrounded and attacked by such a large group of demons upon their arrival.
"Don't overthink it," the doctor said expressionlessly. "The noise we made while building our forward base, along with the convoy's enticements, was like a lighthouse in the darkness for the demons. The reason the Patriots and their team didn't suffer such a large-scale attack before was simply because the demons hadn't arrived yet."
"However, this means the surrounding area should be safe for now." After all, demons don't just appear out of thin air. With so many destroyed, it will take time for them to regroup or wander over from other places.
Chapter Thirteen: In this life, eight out of ten things are uncertain.
Chapter XIII
The motor roared, the saw teeth spun, and tiny pieces of flesh and blood splattered out continuously. Ghost Shark pulled the axe hard, letting his black nun's clothes be completely soaked in blood. A gentle smile appeared on his fair face, which only made him look more eerie.
"Alright, cutting complete. What are you going to do with these demonic materials?" She and Skadi were the only ones who didn't need to wear protective suits. The demons wouldn't contaminate them. Well, after all, they were from different departments within the same system, and the Originium particles couldn't infect Specter and Skadi either.
"Recycle and reuse." Old Xia has already installed an ion furnace at the forward base. The remains of the demons are thrown in and burned clean at high temperatures. The remaining demon crystal fragments and other residues are kept as spoils of war.
Demons can be wrapped in all sorts of random things. In a sense, demonic aggregates are comparable to sharks, and you can find anything inside their bodies.
