"I'll talk! I'll talk! What do you want to know? Take that damn wand away from me and get away from me! I'll tell you whatever you want to know!"
Seeing this, Wentworth's smile faded, and he asked expressionlessly:
"Who wants to kill me?"
"Nobody wants to kill you, at least we don't intend to. We're all wizard hunters. We work for whoever pays the most, it's that simple."
"This time, it was that cloaked fellow who gathered us together, saying he had a commission to take a student to a place designated by his employer."
"We were also very curious at the time. It was just about taking a child away, but the reward for the request was ridiculously high. After we all agreed, the person told us that the student was going to Hogwarts."
At this point, the wizard hunter sitting on the ground glanced at Dumbledore with some fear, swallowed hard, and continued:
“I’m telling the truth! That’s why that cloaked guy is looking for us!”
“I’m from Canada. Some of those wizards I just met have crossed paths with before, since we all hang out in the same circle. Some of them are from Canada like me, some are from Mexico, and some are from Brazil. In any case, the vast majority are from the Americas.”
"According to the cloaked guy, because the target this time is Hogwarts, he doesn't dare to use local British wizards at all. However, we all think that he is afraid that the local British wizard hunters will team up and double-cross him afterward."
Looking at the wizard hunter in front of him, he hesitated at first, but seemed to get more and more comfortable talking. Before Wentworth could ask any questions, he told Wentworth everything he knew. Wentworth then nodded in satisfaction.
Then Wentworth asked the question that concerned him most:
"How did you manage to put the key on my bed?"
Upon hearing Wentworth's question, Dumbledore, who had been standing by indifferently, couldn't help but turn around and look at the wizard hunter with curiosity.
After all, this matter concerns the safety of Hogwarts. Although Dumbledore didn't believe that these guys had anyone in Hogwarts, the Portkey couldn't have just grown legs and run to Wentworth's bed.
“I have no idea what a door key is! Our job is to wait here. According to that cloaked guy, we just need to take the little wizard who comes here tonight to the location designated by the employer, and the job will be done. We don’t need to worry about anything else.”
After the wizard hunter finished speaking, Wentworth seemed to be deep in thought, and after a moment he spoke:
"So if I asked you who hired you, you wouldn't know, would you?"
The wizard hunter said with a mournful face:
“In our line of work, we just take the money and do the job. We never ask who the employer is! I’ve been staying in Knockdown Lane since I came to England from Canada, and it wasn’t until tonight that we were all gathered here.”
After the wizard in front of him finished speaking, Wentworth slowly stood up, turned to Dumbledore, and said:
"Headmaster Dumbledore, could you please double-check what this fellow is saying? Is it really true?"
Chapter Seventy-Five Rufus Scrimgeour
Wentworth glanced at the wizard hunter sitting on the ground and slowly said:
"If what he said is true, then we will hand him over to the law; if what he said is false, then please, Principal, hand him over to me!"
Upon hearing this, Dumbledore nodded slightly and then drew his wand.
Then, the wizard hunter looked at Dumbledore with a look of horror as he approached him with his wand and pressed it against his forehead.
The wizard hunter, already suffering from severe blood loss, turned even paler and then said weakly:
"If you're going to use Soul Seduction, then just do it already! What's with all the asking?"
Wentworth, of course, replied:
"That's called cross-validation, you know nothing about it!"
"Capture the spirit and grasp the mind!"
After a moment, Dumbledore slowly lowered his wand, nodded slightly to Wentworth, and then said:
"What he said should all be true, and there is no sign that his memory has been tampered with."
Just then, accompanied by several bursts of air around the three of them, many wizards, some dressed in suits and others in overcoats, holding wands, suddenly appeared before them.
As soon as they appeared, they raised their wands with practiced ease. Some pointed their wands at Dumbledore and Wentworth immediately, while others held their wands up to the surroundings in a guarded posture.
It was obvious that the Aurors from the British Ministry of Magic had teleported here.
"The...headmaster? Headmaster Dumbledore!"
Soon, the Aurors recognized Dumbledore. Some of the younger Aurors even moved their wands away from Dumbledore and greeted him respectfully.
But this action was quickly rebuked by several older wizards.
"Stay vigilant. How many times have I told you rookies, even if you encounter your father during a mission, don't let your guard down. How do you know this is the real Dumbledore?!"
Amidst this rebuke, a wizard with brown hair and thick eyebrows, resembling a lion, strode towards Dumbledore.
"Oh, Rufus, it's you. Fudge told me you've replaced Thomas Revole as the new head of the Auror office at the Ministry of Magic?"
Dumbledore smiled as he saw the wizard approaching him.
The wizard whom Dumbledore called Rufus approached Dumbledore warily, wand still clutched tightly in his hand, and said:
“Headmaster Dumbledore? Please forgive my rudeness, but I need to examine you to verify your identity.”
Dumbledore laughed heartily, seemingly unconcerned, and said:
"Of course, Rufus. You're still as cautious as ever, which is a good habit. Just like back when you and that girl had your date by the Black Lake, you would cast a spell around the area beforehand, even though the spell seems a bit rudimentary by today's standards. By the way, I think that girl's name was..."
Before Dumbledore could finish speaking, Rufus quickly interrupted him.
"Headmaster, Headmaster Dumbledore, please forgive us, this is procedure. We need to prevent anyone from taking Polyjuice Potion to impersonate you and damage your honor!"
Rufus's smile was somewhat awkward, but he slowly put his wand away.
Dumbledore, however, said with amusement:
"Looks like the girl you married in the end wasn't the one from before?"
Rufus's face grew even more embarrassed, and he quickly turned his gaze to what was behind Dumbledore, asking curiously:
"Headmaster Dumbledore, what's going on tonight?"
Dumbledore then pulled Wentworth to his side and introduced him:
"Come, let me introduce you. This is Rufus, the new Head of the Auror Office at the Ministry of Magic. This is Wentworth, a freshman at Hogwarts."
Wentworth and Rufus smiled and nodded in greeting.
Rufus then turned his attention to the wizard hunter who was sitting on the ground with his back against a tree.
But then the wizard hunter suddenly jumped up, looked around in shock, and said:
"Who are you? How did I get here? What happened to my hand? What happened?!"
Wentworth looked at the wizard hunter who seemed to have forgotten everything with surprise, but when Wentworth looked at Dumbledore, he saw that Dumbledore was looking at him meaningfully.
Wentworth knew perfectly well that this must have been Dumbledore's doing. For Dumbledore, it was no easy task to make this defenseless wizard forget everything that had happened that night.
Rufus approached and asked a few questions, only to find that the strange wizard truly did not remember what had happened that night. He had no choice but to turn his attention back to Dumbledore, seemingly wanting to ask him something, but for a moment he didn't know how to begin.
Dumbledore didn't want to put Rufus in a difficult position, so he spoke directly:
“Oh, here’s what happened tonight. I was out with Wentworth on some business, but on our way back we were suddenly stopped by a group of wizards. If I’m not mistaken, they were wizard hunters.”
Upon hearing Dumbledore reveal their identities, Rufus frowned but did not interrupt Dumbledore, who continued:
“After I fought them, they tried to escape. I didn’t chase after them because I had to take care of Wentworth. I just planned to leave one of the wizards behind to question them about their origins. However, after I left this wizard behind, someone on the other side suddenly cast a forgetting spell on him, and that’s how it ended up like this.”
Wentworth stood beside Dumbledore, looking terrified, and occasionally nodded in agreement with him.
After listening to Dumbledore's description, Rufus's gaze swept over Wentworth and the wizard hunter, lost in thought. After a moment, Rufus spoke as if to himself:
"According to our investigation, the disappearance of my predecessor, Thomas Revol, is also related to a group of wizard hunters..."
Upon hearing Rufus's description, Wentworth felt a pang of anxiety, but remained outwardly calm, while Dumbledore seemed lost in thought.
"Alright, Headmaster Dumbledore, we'll handle things here. I'll take this wizard hunter with me for now and see if we can restore his memories. I'll let you know if there are any new discoveries."
Hearing Rufus's words, Dumbledore smiled and nodded in response:
“Of course, then I’ll leave it to you, Rufus. Let’s go, Wentworth.”
Just as Dumbledore took Wentworth's hand, about to Apparate away, Rufus suddenly said:
"Headmaster Dumbledore, you really take good care of Wentworth. First you took him to the Quidditch World Cup, and now you're taking him out late at night. By the way, I still don't know whose child Wentworth is, or what his last name is?"
Chapter Seventy-Six Rita Skeeter
Rufus's words made Dumbledore pause, seemingly frozen in place, while Rufus simply watched Dumbledore and Wentworth quietly, and the scene fell silent for a moment.
Just then, footsteps suddenly came from the dense forest not far away.
The rustling sound drew the attention of all the wizards present. Rufus, Dumbledore, and Wentworth all looked in the direction from which the sound came, while some of the other Aurors raised their wands and pointed them in the direction of the sound.
Suddenly, with a "snap," a bright white light flashed, standing out brilliantly in the pitch-black night. Then, a woman with exaggerated curly hair, holding a notebook and a quill pen, emerged from the dense forest, followed by a man with a camera hanging around his neck.
Upon seeing the woman before him, Rufus's face flashed with displeasure, while Dumbledore's expression also seemed somewhat gloomy.
"Wow, I didn't expect to run into so many important people here so late. I wonder what Mr. Rufus, the new head of the Auror office at the Ministry of Magic, and Mr. Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, are doing here so late?"
The woman with glasses glanced at Rufus and Dumbledore with a curious look, and as she spoke, Wentworth was surprised to notice that the quill pen she had been holding had automatically started writing in the notebook in her hand.
Upon witnessing this astonishing scene, a name suddenly came to Wentworth's mind—Rita Skeeter.
When the woman's gaze swept from Rufus and Dumbledore to Wentworth beside Dumbledore, Wentworth noticed that her eyes lit up as if she had discovered something extraordinary.
Then, the woman suddenly snatched the camera from the man's hand behind her and snapped several photos of Wentworth and Dumbledore. The dazzling flashes even forced Wentworth to turn around and squint.
"Rita Skeeter? What are you doing here? The Ministry of Magic has a mission here, please leave!"
Seeing this, before Dumbledore could speak, Rufus stepped forward and addressed Rita Skeeter.
Upon hearing Rufus's address to the woman, Wentworth knew he hadn't guessed wrong, and at the same time, he inwardly felt a sense of foreboding.
Sure enough, Rita Skeeter didn't seem afraid of Rufus, the head of the Auror Office at the Ministry of Magic. She didn't even respond to his questions and inquiries, instead keeping her eyes on Dumbledore and Wentworth.
Rita Skeeter trotted over to Wentworth and asked with a smile:
"I know you, child. You are a student at Hogwarts. Not long ago, Dumbledore took you to watch the Quidditch World Cup final! So here's the question: Hogwarts has so many students, why did Dumbledore only take you to watch the World Cup final? Is there any special relationship between you and Dumbledore?"
Upon hearing Rita Skeeter's question, Wentworth looked bewildered and replied:
"Auntie, I don't understand what you mean?"
