However, Tyrion ultimately used all his strength to persuade Jaime not to meet Viserys in his true form, at least leaving room for maneuver.
"stop."
The long night is filled with darkness, a constant theme, yet the palace, the political heart of the empire, remains brightly lit.
Tyrion and Jaime headed toward Maegor Tower, where the Unsullied guards were on patrol despite the cold. The main passage to Maegor Tower was a drawbridge, and torches burned on the towering, sturdy outer walls of the palace, bringing warmth and dispelling the darkness.
The palace guards, holding round shields and spears, coldly and meticulously scanned the dignitaries coming and going from the Red Keep, until they saw Tyrion and Jaime walking towards them, and then routinely stopped them from being inspected.
The group of palace guards was led by an Unsullied captain wearing a helmet with two spikes.
He saw Tyrion and recognized him immediately; he was the most famous dwarf in the Empire, without exception. He didn't speak but simply nodded slightly to Tyrion.
Then his gaze shifted to the middle-aged man beside Tyrion, and he looked him up and down before speaking.
"Lord Tyrion."
Who is this?
If it were just Tyrion coming to see His Majesty alone, the Unsullied guards wouldn't have stopped him, since Tyrion is quite diligent and often has matters to discuss with His Majesty. But since Tyrion brought a stranger with him, they naturally had to ask him some questions.
Tyrion turned to look at Jaime, making sure he hadn't given anything away, before turning back to him, nodding calmly and explaining in a composed manner.
"He is the person His Majesty wishes to see."
Tyrion's explanation left the Unsullied captain with no doubt whatsoever.
Because Viserys was busy with official duties, he would often summon people they had never met before, and also nobles from within the Empire who came to King's Landing to pay homage to His Majesty.
After all, the empire's territory is so vast, and there are even more feudal nobles on this vast land.
Not to mention the Unsullied can't recognize them, the number of nobles has increased several times since Robert Baratheon's time, and all sorts of strange and varied heraldic symbols and tribal names have sprung up like mushrooms after rain, to the point that even the nobles themselves can't tell who is who.
Nowadays, the education of noble children focuses on learning the coats of arms and the languages of the major families of the empire, and when unfamiliar nobles talk to each other, they will hand over a name card symbolizing their family to make it easier for the other party to understand them.
However, Tyrion is His Majesty the Emperor's personal advisor and a member of the Council of Kings, so the people he brought along as a guide should be fine.
"Lord Tyrion, please come in."
So the Unsullied Guard Captain simply checked that neither of them was carrying any weapons, and then put them both inside.
"However, His Majesty is busy right now. The Sea King of Braavos recently requested an audience, so you may have to wait a while."
However, Gendry, Viserys's personal bodyguard, was still inside the Red Keep, and the Unsullied captain didn't say much.
Even if they went in, they wouldn't disturb His Majesty and Aquaman's conversation, because Gendry would stop them and make proper arrangements for His Majesty's time.
Just then, footsteps sounded from inside the Maeger Tower, and Thormo Frega, the King of Braavos, emerged. He was dressed in a greyish-purple robe and wore a seashell necklace. Beside him was his chief swordsman, a lean man with sharp eyes.
Because Jaime had undergone a simple disguise, Aquaman Braavos did not recognize him. He only saw Tyrion pause slightly, humbly greet him, and then leave.
"You still have room for regret, James."
However, after Tyrion greeted the King of Braavos, he curiously looked at his back. He didn't know what the King of Braavos wanted to see His Majesty about. Then, after entering the Magorium, Tyrion once again tried to persuade his brother.
Unfortunately, Jaime was determined and shook his head, leaving Tyrion helpless.
"You're just being stubborn."
His brother's temperament was just like that; he was very emotional and prone to acting on impulse, doing whatever came to mind without considering the consequences. Even after becoming a Faceless Man and experiencing much torment, he remained essentially the same. But perhaps that was the real Jaime. Tyrion should be thankful that Jaime was still the same person he always was.
Tyrion couldn't dissuade Jaime from backing out at the last minute, so he had no choice but to reluctantly lead him to Viserys's study.
Viserys was in his study, pondering the suggestion Thormo Frega had just made, when there was a knock on his door.
Chapter 805 Regret
"Your Majesty, Lord Tyrion requests an audience."
Viserys has two servants. Robb Stark was supposed to take up the post of Lord of the North, but unfortunately the Long Night prevented his journey and he was forced to stay in King's Landing. Now, the person guarding Viserys's gates is Gendry.
The black-haired boy, whose physique had become increasingly muscular, knocked on Viserys's door and then spoke respectfully.
"Tyrion?"
Viserys paused slightly upon hearing this, as he hadn't turned Tyrion over, but he put aside the suggestion from King Braavos that had just crossed his mind, and then nodded to allow Tyrion to enter.
"His Majesty."
However, Tyrion didn't come in alone.
Beside him was a man with short black hair and a hooked nose, who stared intently at Viserys. When Viserys saw this man, his gaze also fell on him.
Because he could tell that the person was wearing a mask. The Faceless One's face-changing trick was indeed masterful, but since it was fake, there would be flaws.
Viserys possessed an ability similar to 'bullet time,' in which the world appeared slower and more detailed to him within the same amount of time. Therefore, he was able to spot the flaw on the person's cheek with just a glance.
However, Viserys did not panic when facing the Faceless One. The infamous Faceless One was indeed feared by everyone in the world, but he was an exception, because the two were not on the same level.
"The Faceless One?"
Viserys had long, silver-gold hair that cascaded freely over his shoulders, and a pair of clear, bright, pale purple eyes.
He glanced at the man, then at Tyrion, whose expression showed a slight hint of nervousness.
"Your Majesty, he is...?"
Just as Tyrion was about to explain, Jaime, seeing that he had been exposed, tore off his disguise and revealed his true face.
"It is I, Your Highness."
"Long time no see."
James tore off his disguise, revealing a thin, slightly sunken face. His drooping eye bags made him look much older, and his messy stubble and golden hair had turned much grayer.
Jaime is only in his thirties, but he looks much older than his age. Apart from the face that still has the features of the dashing blond knight from back then, there is no trace of Jaime from back then.
His back was no longer straight, and the pride in his eyes was gone. He looked like an ordinary person, and for someone like James, being called an ordinary person was the greatest irony.
There are fewer and fewer people in this world who can call Viserys "Your Highness," but Jaime happens to be one of them.
Because he joined the Kingsguard at the age of fifteen, Jaime watched Viserys grow up and escorted him to Dragonstone in a carriage before the fall of King's Landing.
"I didn't expect it to be you?"
Viserys looked at Jaime's face, which was still vaguely recognizable, and after a slight surprise at first, he spoke calmly.
He didn't seem too surprised that the other person was still alive after disappearing for so many years.
Although James is sometimes slow-witted and very impulsive, willful, stubborn, and irritable, he has a resilient character. Difficulties may temporarily defeat him, but he will eventually get back up.
Moreover, after all these years of ups and downs, James's hand still hasn't been cut off.
He was also a great warrior, brave and skilled in battle.
"I'm curious why you dare to show your face in front of me."
After his initial surprise, Viserys remained relatively calm and even asked curiously.
His gaze shifted to Tyrion, who had led Jaime in from the other side. If Tyrion hadn't brought Jaime in, the other man probably wouldn't have even been able to get close to him.
Even though the other party had become a Faceless Man, it was indeed beyond his expectations that Jaime had become one after disappearing for so many years.
"Is it because you believe your brother will protect you and persuade me to spare your life?"
"Your Majesty, I..."
Meanwhile, Tyrion's heart leaped into his throat again upon hearing Viserys's words. He had just breathed a slight sigh of relief when he saw that Viserys's eyes held no hatred but only surprise and scrutiny when he saw Jaime, thinking that this matter might not be impossible to get away with. However, Viserys's subsequent words made him anxious once again.
Tyrion was about to explain something, but his brother stopped him once again.
“This matter has nothing to do with Tyrion. He is completely loyal to you, Your Majesty.”
“I forced him to bring me to see you.”
This time, a knight with golden hair mixed with a lot of gray stepped forward and stood in front of Tyrion, speaking.
He no longer addressed Viserys as 'Your Highness,' that phrase was merely a farewell to the past.
Because when Jaime sent this silver-haired youth, who was then a terrified boy, onto the carriage, he used the words "Your Highness" as a farewell.
But time changes quickly, and that boy is no longer the second prince protected by Jaime, but has become the young emperor who created the Valyrian Empire.
When Jaime was working as a Faceless Man killer in Braavos, across the Narrow Sea, he often heard about what happened on the other side.
"You want to see me?"
"for what?"
Viserys, having overheard Jaime's words, was curious about what he intended to do.
To say that Jaime, having become a Faceless Man, would want to assassinate him would be utterly idiotic, because Jaime, being part of the Faceless Man organization, should know who destroyed it back then.
"Atonement!"
James answered Viserys' question without hesitation, speaking directly and frankly.
“I murdered your father, King Aerys; I slit his throat from behind.”
"I am willing to accept trial."
These were words that would enrage anyone who heard them, and even the most good-tempered person would find them unbearable, since this was the man who killed their father.
However, Viserys, sitting behind his desk, remained calm throughout. He didn't really care how Aerys II died, since he never truly considered him his father.
"You want to find your sister Cersei?"
You want to tell him you're back.
The silver-haired young man stared quietly at the two people standing before him, one tall and one short, with his pale purple eyes. Then, after James finished speaking, he suddenly spoke up.
"Do you want her to regret it?"
Chapter 806 Trial
This time, it was James's turn to be slightly taken aback upon hearing this. He hadn't expected Viserys to hit the nail on the head with his words.
Although his inner pride prevented him from admitting it.
"Of course not..."
James opened his mouth, about to retort, but Viserys shook his head slightly.
"That really is your personality; only you could do something like this."
