They suppressed their smiles and then spoke respectfully.
"Father invites Your Highness."
Quentin and Tristan lacked the necessary qualifications. Upon hearing that their nephew, Heros Targaryen, had arrived on a dragon, they were only focused on their joy and the banquet, failing to grasp the deeper meaning behind it all.
Prince Doran, who was bedridden, immediately guessed the reason and invited Heros to his bedroom for a chat.
Chapter 1085 The Flowing Water Garden
Prince Doran did not reside in Sunspear, the Martell family’s home city, but rather in a magnificent palace located on the beach of Three Lig, west of Sunspear.
This is the private residence of the Prince of Dorne, a palace consisting of fountains and gardens, separated by a seaside road.
"Does Your Highness still remember this place?"
A man with olive skin and straight black hair, dressed in a sand-yellow robe to shield himself from the scorching sun, rode a slender Dornish horse and turned to speak to Heros.
The person who led Heros to this place as his guide was none other than his uncle, Prince Tristan Martell.
He was the youngest son of Prince Doran and also the cousin of Queen Renis, Heros's mother, so Heros had to address Tristan as his uncle.
Looking at her nephew, especially with his long, dark hair and black eyes, Tristan found him increasingly pleasing to the eye.
This is also why Dorne was willing to support Holos unconditionally, because he possessed very distinct Dorne bloodline characteristics, unlike the children born to his sister Arianne, who had silver hair, purple eyes, and no Dorne traits whatsoever.
At the same time, Tristan also had this kind of trouble, which is why he liked Heros more and more as he looked at him.
Originally, during the reign of King Robert, Robert Baratheon wanted to win back Dorne, so he betrothed his daughter Myrcella to Prince Quentin Martell, Trisdan's brother. Prince Doran agreed to this in order to secure the Iron Throne.
However, as everyone knows, what happened next was that the Baratheon family fell apart, and Princess Myrcella, as a former princess, was fostered in King's Landing.
It would be inappropriate for the heir to Dorne to marry a princess from the previous dynasty, but the Martell family is, after all, a prominent and influential family, and it would be difficult to just break off the engagement.
Therefore, the engagement was later transferred to Quentin's younger brother, Prince Tristan, who was of a more suitable age.
Tristan Martell traveled to the Iron Islands to marry his bride. At first, he was very reluctant, since he had never met her before. But who knew that Myrcella would look so beautiful?
However, after meeting him in person, Tristan had no objections.
Myrcella inherited the best qualities of both her parents, possessing milky-white skin and golden curly hair. Her personality was the complete opposite of her mother's; she was delicate, beautiful, and polite, and also had courage and a strong will.
Tristan successfully married his beautiful wife and returned to Dorne. He had no complaints about his wife, after all, Myrcella was beautiful and gentle.
Unfortunately, Myrcella later gave birth to several children for Tristan, but they were all blond and blue-eyed, showing no signs of affection, which became Tristan's biggest regret.
"Ok?"
Upon hearing his uncle's words, Heros paused slightly, clearly having forgotten.
"It seems Your Highness has forgotten."
"Your mother, Queen Renes, once carried you home when you were a child."
That was when Heros was still a child; Renis had once returned to Dorne to visit her family while carrying her infant son.
However, Renis had lived in King's Landing since childhood and then moved to the continent of Essos, so she didn't really have any close relatives back home and rarely went back. Heros had been to Sunspear City, but this was the first time he had ever been to Flowing Gardens.
Prince Tristan didn't seem to mind. Instead, he dismounted and handed the reins to a Dornish guard in the Flowing Water Garden before continuing to speak.
"The Flowing Water Garden was originally built by Prince Maron Martell."
"He gave it as a gift to his Targaryen bride, Daenerys, the daughter of King Engon Targaryen IV and Queen Neresh Targaryen."
"This marks the union of Dorne with the Iron Throne."
Prince Tristan, the uncle, began to explain the history of the Flowing Gardens, which symbolize the union of House Targaryen and the Iron Throne.
After all, news from King's Landing hasn't arrived yet, and Horos is still the most powerful heir of House Targaryen. It's quite necessary for Tristan to introduce these things to Horos.
"This is also my father's favorite place."
Tristan shrugged and began to speak.
Upon hearing his uncle's words, Heros took a deep breath, then grabbed the saddle ring and jumped off the horse.
"This place is indeed very beautiful."
"It is also very meaningful."
He looked around; the autumn breeze here was very refreshing. Then, slightly uneasy, he nodded and spoke, though Tristan didn't notice.
"Your Highness."
Then a servant from the Flowing Water Palace came forward and led away the horses for Heros. Now Tyrex was resting outside Sunspear City, being fed by the guards of the Martell family.
However, it often doesn't like being fed by humans, as it feels embarrassed by it. It prefers to fly out into the sea to hunt big fish on its own.
Heros and Tristan entered the Water Garden, which featured numerous pools and fountains, blood orange trees casting shadows, and pale pink marble floors covering the garden and courtyard.
Then they passed a row of carved pillars, through elegant archways, the salty sea breeze blowing, where many children of noble birth from noble families throughout Dorne played on the beach, in the pools and fountains.
They all cast curious glances at Heros.
"dad."
However, at that moment, a blond-haired little boy ran towards Tristan.
"Morse."
When Tristan saw the blond boy, a smile immediately appeared on her face.
He grabbed the boy, lifted him up, and placed him in the crook of his arm. Then, he nuzzled the boy's cheek with his beard and introduced him to Heros.
“Your Highness, this is my son, Morsemartell.”
“This is Prince Herostangrian, Morse, quickly address him as Your Highness.”
"Your Highness."
And indeed, Tristan and Mysera's son was as intelligent and sensible as he had described along the way. Upon hearing his father's words, he immediately spoke respectfully.
"Hello, Morse."
Seeing the boy's cute and sensible appearance, Heros's eyes showed a slightly complicated expression.
Upon hearing Morsemartell's words, he finally composed himself, smiled, ruffled Morsemartell's hair, and spoke.
"He will surely grow up to be an excellent Prince of Dorne."
Although Heros has Dorne blood, he doesn't know much about Dorne's customs and traditions.
His words were meant as casual remarks, but they caused Tristan Martell, who was holding his son, to pause slightly.
He then came to his senses when his father, Prince Doran's, guards came to invite him into the bedroom for a chat.
Chapter 1086 Obtaining the Title
"Uncle."
Heros had tried hard to imagine what kind of person his great-uncle, who was described as meticulous, cautious, extremely intelligent, thoughtful, and unfathomable, really was.
Prince Doran is now almost eighty years old, and he is one of the few who has survived to the final rounds of this game of power.
Most of his old rivals are no longer alive, either from war or accidents, but he has lived peacefully to this day.
However, none of Herros's imaginings of Prince Doran were of the scene he was seeing.
In the spacious, dimly lit bedroom, there was hardly any extra furniture, not even a chair, just a large bed.
Curtains hung down all around, partially obscuring the figure lying on the bed, and the air was filled with a strong herbal scent.
As soon as Heros entered Prince Doran's bedroom, he couldn't help but frown slightly, but he managed to suppress the pungent smell by covering his face with his arm.
"Uncle."
He entered the bedroom and looked at the figure lying on the hospital bed. The figure then waved to him, and Heros walked closer.
Then he saw an old man with a withered face and white hair lying quietly on the hospital bed.
The other person was emaciated, with bones almost visible in their cheeks and arms, and their eyes were dull and lifeless as they stared at the ceiling.
"I never imagined I'd end up like this?"
Heros looked at Prince Doran, opened his mouth but didn't say anything, while the old man lying on the hospital bed was breathing slightly rapidly. He then turned his head to look at Heros and spoke in a hoarse voice.
"I..."
Heros was very intelligent, but when he actually met Prince Doran, he found himself unable to say the words he had prepared.
"You look a lot like your father."
However, Prince Doran did not care about Heros's silence. Looking at the young man in front of him, he seemed to see the son-in-law he had personally chosen years ago.
Prince Doran coughed violently a few times, his gray head shaking as if he might breathe his last at any moment.
Then he changed the subject, his voice hoarse but direct, and asked.
"Tell me, child."
"What exactly happened in King's Landing?"
...
Several hours had passed since Herros entered Prince Doran's bedroom for their private conversation, and the sky above was gradually darkening.
Meanwhile, Tristan leaned against the railing on the second-floor balcony of the Flowing Water Garden, looking down at the noble children below who were being urged to eat by their nannies after playing. Among them were his two sons and one daughter.
Tristan was still thinking about what Heros had just said, and was slightly uneasy.
The Martell family's lineage, or rather, the lineage of most noble families on Westeros, follows this pattern: collateral descendants gradually diverge and eventually become ordinary people.
For example, Prince Drow Ranger is now the Lord of Sunspear and a Prince of Dorne, while his siblings Oberyn and Ilya are also a Prince and a Princess, respectively.
If Tristan's brother Quentin were to ascend to the throne, Tristan would also become a prince, but the children of Uncle Oberyn and Aunt Illya would no longer be considered princes or princesses of Dorne.
They will gradually be differentiated into ordinary members of the Martell family, eventually becoming servants or warriors to serve the family; otherwise, the number of people would become uncontrollably large as the family line continues.
However, what Prince Heros just said...that his son will become the Prince of Dorne in the future.
If it were true, Tristan must have thought about this question before, because no one would ignore it; otherwise, they would be lying.
But later, as he gradually came to terms with reality, he gave up on this idea.
It wasn't until Heros's words that Tristan's hidden ambitions were rekindled.
