The Black Pearl, originally named the Bad Girl, was a trading ship belonging to the East India Trading Company, led by Lord Beckett. Jack Sparrow was appointed captain and tasked with transporting a shipment from Africa. However, Jack discovered that the so-called "cargo" was actually African slaves, and out of a sense of justice, he freed them all. For this, Jack was branded with the letter "P," a symbol of piracy, by Beckett and imprisoned in a Turkish prison, while the Bad Girl was ordered by Beckett to be destroyed and sunk into the sea.

After being expelled, Jack is determined to reclaim his ship. He seeks out Captain Davy Jones of the Flying Dutchman, asking Jones to save his ship on the condition that Jones will possess Jack's soul for 100 years after Jack becomes captain again, up to the 13th year. Jones agrees and helps Jack rescue the wicked girl, hoisting black sails and renaming the ship the Black Pearl.

Jack traveled to Port Ta and recruited a crew. This crew had been searching for the legendary treasure of Cortés. After some haggling, Jack agreed to split the treasure equally with the crew. However, Jack's first mate, Barbossa, persuaded him that he should share the treasure's location with everyone. Jack agreed. So, on the very night he revealed the treasure's location, the crew, led by Barbossa, staged a mutiny, relieved Jack of his captaincy, and abandoned him on a desert island.

After the mutiny, the crew, led by Barbossa, found the mysterious treasure and divided it among themselves. They quickly squandered the wealth on food, drink, and debauchery. However, they soon discovered that the gold was cursed.
