“It’s done, Diana.” Coulson, holding binoculars, looked in the direction of the Essex Corporation.
A figure soared into the sky; without a doubt, it was Diana.
As Diana soared into the sky, thick thunderclouds began to gather overhead, layer upon layer, with occasional flashes of enormous lightning streaking across them.
"boom!!!"
"Heavy gift crab!!" Coulson uttered his first swear word since becoming a secret agent.
The Turmoil After Chapter 34
"We still don't know exactly how this world wonder happened, but it's certain that some part of our government knew about this lightning spectacle in advance."
Tony Stark stared in astonishment at the footage being broadcast on the news. To be honest, was such a huge lightning bolt really not something produced by a weather weapon?
"This is God's will, God wants to destroy this world!" When reporters interviewed people who had personally experienced this lightning spectacle, some fanatical believers would jump out and shout into the camera that the end of the world was coming.
The host in the live broadcast room had no choice but to quickly hang up the live connection to prevent the situation from escalating.
The host, after reviewing his prepared remarks, continued, "Similarly, this lightning spectacle has been interpreted by the public as a result of the United States acquiring weather weapons after a deal with aliens, which has sparked numerous public demonstrations."
The screen only flashed a few images of the protest marches before switching back to the live broadcast room.
"The economic losses caused by this lightning spectacle are estimated to be over five billion dollars. It not only caused a large-scale power outage in New York City, but also led to the complete demise of an Essex biotechnology company in the incident." The host continued the report calmly, after all, protests are a very normal thing in America.
Just as the host was speaking, the director played a comparison of the original photos of the Essex company and the photos after it was struck by lightning.
The charred crater no longer bears any resemblance to the magnificent Essex Company building.
Tony Stark could only smack his lips, feeling a chill run down his spine.
This spectacular lightning strike will hit Stark Industries again...
He shook his head, trying to banish the terrifying thought from his mind, but he was utterly powerless to do anything about it. After all, no one could know for sure whether a bolt of lightning the size of a football field would strike their own company building one day.
“Jarvis, do we need to move the company headquarters to Los Angeles?” Tony Stark said seriously. He was indeed not very concerned about his company, but Stark Industries was the prerequisite for his peaceful life.
“Sir, moving Stark Industries out of New York will cause our stock price, which is already down 56 percent, to drop by at least another 15 percent,” Jarvis’s voice rang out.
"Besides, sir, you don't need to worry too much about natural disasters." Jarvis's calm voice delivered a bombshell message to Tony Stark.
"Man-made?" Tony Stark instantly understood everything. Normally, nature could not possibly produce such a terrifying thunderstorm. The only explanation was that someone had deliberately created this lightning spectacle.
“That’s right, sir.”
"Targeting Essex Corporation?" Tony Stark couldn't imagine anyone targeting a small biotechnology company, since large companies capable of producing such weather weapons would look down on such a small company.
Tony Stark nodded. It was certain that Stark Industries had no interest in such biotechnology companies, but what other companies could produce weather weapons?
Osborne? They're a biotechnology giant; they wouldn't care about such a small company.
Hammer Industries? Why would I even think of such a useless company?
...
After much deliberation, Tony Stark concluded that Stark Industries was the only company capable of producing a weather weapon, but that was inherently impossible, as they didn't even know where a piece of metal for a weather weapon was.
"Jarvis, is he Storm from the mutants?" Tony Stark suddenly thought of a woman among the mutants who could control lightning.
“Sir, it’s not Storm.” Jarvis pulled up the satellite image of Stark from that day.
The Storm Girl in the photo shows no sign of leaving Xavier's School for Gifted Children.
"Sir, Stark's satellites have captured a photo of what happened before the thunderstorm."
Jarvis projected a photo showing Diana breaking the sound barrier.
"Are you sure, Jarvis?" Tony Stark's gaze turned serious. This woman was clearly Diana Prince, whom he had just met not long ago.
"Ninety-five percent accuracy, sir."
“Then I need to increase the speed.” Tony Stark stroked his beard, looking at the silver-white mech being assembled on the workbench. “With this, I can at least guarantee that I will be able to protect myself if I get involved in this kind of thing in the future.”
“Sir, I don’t think the current Mark II is capable of protecting you in this situation.” Jarvis’s voice ruthlessly shattered Tony Stark’s thoughts.
"Come on, how is that possible?" Tony Stark felt that apart from that guy called Magneto, he had absolutely no natural enemies.
"After comparison, I found that Miss Prince's match with the comic book character Wonder Woman is almost 100%. Sir, Miss Prince can tear your armor open with her bare hands."
Tony Stark stared at the projection split in two in front of him: one was a satellite image of Diana Prince high in the sky, and the other was the specific data of the comic book character Wonder Woman.
"A generous crab!" Tony Stark, clutching his head, couldn't believe his eyes, but Jarvis's professionalism had never failed him, meaning...
"A cartoon character has appeared in our real world!"
Another person said the same thing as Tony Stark.
At this moment, Thor was also facing the information Nick Fury had given him, unable to control his expression.
“Although this sounds like an April Fool’s joke, Thor, this really happened,” Nick Fury said to Thor, resting his chin on his hand.
“I don’t know how to say it, but it’s already happened. We can’t treat Diana as a comic book character with a fixed personality; she is a real goddess.” After his initial surprise, Thor quickly accepted that Diana came from a comic book world.
“I know, but the price of knowing is a bit high.” Nick Fury sighed, thinking about the forces that had been lurking within S.H.I.E.L.D. recently discovered thanks to Diana’s reminder.
"So, what do you mean?" Thor was a little confused as to what this hard-boiled egg wanted from coming to him to see these things.
"Since Diana was able to come to our world, what if other comic book characters came to visit?" Nick Fury had been thinking about this question ever since he witnessed Diana's arrival.
This time, it's a Wonder Woman who seems to be leaning towards the neutral and lawful side. What if next time it's an evil and chaotic Superman? Anything is possible.
Nick Fury stood up and extended his hand to Thor: "I'd like you to join my team that deals with these kinds of things."
“That sounds interesting. Anyway, I can only stay on Earth for now, so it’s good to have some fun.” Thor shook Nick Fury’s hand.
“Welcome to the Avengers.” Nick Fury nodded.
"And what about my teammates?" Thor withdrew his hands and asked, crossing his arms.
“Two people are definitely going in, and the other one might need a little more time,” Nick Fury said, thinking of the big green guy who had already fled overseas.
"Diana?"
Nick Fury shook his head; he had absolutely no hope of Diana joining his Avengers plan. After all, Diana had been one of the Justice League's Big Three in the comic book world, and there was simply no chance of recruiting her into the Avengers team.
Thor wanted to say something, but when he thought about Diana's experiences in the comics, he realized that the woman seemed to have experienced everything.
The two men remained silent in Nick Fury's office.
The woman on the three men's lips, the one who created this spectacular lightning phenomenon, had a frighteningly calm expression on her pretty face.
Emma didn't know how to comfort her, so she could only say to Diana, "This is not your fault. Their deaths were not caused by you."
Diana nodded: "I know, but I just am..."
Diana couldn't describe how she felt; any words she used seemed inadequate. The image of the child lying on the dissection table kept replaying in her mind.
“I’ve been through a lot, Emma. I’m not as fragile as you think. I’m just feeling sorry for all the innocent lives that have been lost,” Diana said, looking out at the night view. “I once abandoned humanity because I couldn’t accept war and killing caused by selfish desires.”
"But later, after witnessing the most sincere human emotions, I realized that humans are animals that are extremely complex."
Diana looked away and turned to Emma: "Actually, after a battle in another world, I made everyone there forget about me."
Emma simply looked at Diana without saying a word and silently took her hand.
“Actually, I just need to calm down,” Diana said softly.
Chapter 35 The Phone Call from Tony Stark
New York quickly returned to normal, as if nothing had happened. In this dazzling world, people are destined not to focus on one thing for long, unless it directly concerns them.
Even former Essex employees didn't feel that Essex's disappearance had much of an impact on them. After Essex's demise, a biotechnology giant offered them jobs: Osborne Group.
No one paid any more attention to the vanished company, since a company of that size couldn't make any waves in New York.
As for that so-called lightning spectacle? Please, the United States experiences at least 700 tornadoes every year. It's impossible for a lightning strike, which is not even known whether it's a natural disaster or not, to attract the long-term attention of Americans.
New York's nights are always intoxicating, and many people gradually lose their original selves amidst the dazzling lights and revelry. Whether they are business celebrities or financial tycoons, those who remain sober are always in the minority.
But at least now there are two exceptionally clear-headed people sitting together.
Diana was sitting in Kingpin's office on the top floor of the Fisk Tower, looking at Fisk, who was dressed in a suit and tie, in front of her.
Fisk organized the documents at hand without any sense of tension. He was well aware of his own limitations; someone like him, still within the realm of humanity, had no chance of winning against the woman in front of him.
"I must say, you are indeed the best controller of the New York underworld." Diana maintained a gentle smile; she genuinely had no intention of praising Fisk.
However, this person has indeed done a good job of controlling the underground forces. At least now you can't find any ordinary civilians on TV who have been accidentally injured because they were caught up in gang feuds.
Moreover, Fisker wisely eliminated as much of the criminal influence in the Brooklyn neighborhood where Diana lived as possible.
Diana didn't ask for much; this was enough. She understood that this dark side couldn't be eliminated, but it also couldn't be allowed to grow excessively.
“But now many of my men are dying outside New York City.” Fisk shrugged. “These ninjas have been acting like madmen lately, completely disregarding casualties. But you know we can’t keep feeding our men into this meat grinder.”
Diana nodded. She knew Fisk wanted her to intervene and end this dark struggle directly. He didn't say it explicitly, but Diana knew that if things continued like this, Fisk might lose his control over New York's underworld.
"Where's your henchman with the bullseye on his head?" Diana looked around Fisk again and indeed couldn't find Bullseye, who had been following Fisk around.
"Because of a sudden street hero who got him into trouble, he can only hang around Hell's Kitchen and keep fighting with that kid, so..." Fisk really didn't expect that such a street kid would suddenly appear who just went crazy fighting crime with a burst of passion, and didn't even have the money to make good equipment, relying entirely on being indestructible.
“Okay, find them, then call me.” Diana stood up and straightened the wrinkles in her dress. “I believe you can find them, can’t I?”
Fisk nodded: "I will."
Diana left the Fisker Building with a bright smile on her face.
It's a win-win situation, in a way. After all, she helped Fisk deal with the Hand, and Fisk gave her a quiet and peaceful New York City, where there wouldn't be any gang shootouts in the streets.
As Diana got into her car and was about to start it, a phone call came in.
"Hello."
“Hey, Diana, I’m Tony Stark.” The mustachioed man’s voice reached Diana’s ears.
"Is there anything I can help you with, Mr. Stark?" Diana wasn't surprised that this guy had his own phone number. As the richest man in America, getting the phone number of a museum employee was a piece of cake for him.
Moreover, his home houses the world's most advanced artificial intelligence: Jarvis.
But then suddenly he stopped talking. If Diana hadn't been able to hear Stark's breathing, she would have thought the billionaire had died suddenly in that instant.
“Mr. Stark?” Just as Diana continued to ask, an old voice she had never heard before came through the telephone receiver.
"Breathe, relax, relax." That's what the voice was saying, followed by the sound of the phone being hung up.
