As he said this, his eyes never left Ifrit, as if he were looking at his own child.
This eased Lin Ye's wariness, but he noticed that Ifrit was still looking at Kado with the same vengeful gaze, which puzzled him. After a moment's thought, he remembered Saria's words and decided it was best to keep Kado away from Ifrit. So, he took a step forward discreetly, his right hand on his hip, just centimeters from the hilt of his black steel sword, and said to Kado, "I understand your feelings, but you should also know Ifrit's situation; she's still reluctant to get close to unfamiliar people."
“I understand, I understand.” Kado nodded repeatedly, took two steps back to show his understanding, “This is not Ifrit’s fault, it is our fault, it is our inadequacy.”
Kado retreated several meters before Ifrit's expression improved considerably. Seeing this, Lin Ye finally lowered his hand.
“But it seems Ifrit trusts you a lot.” Kado then looked at Lin Ye.
"It's alright," Lin Ye said. "I just don't dislike it."
Ifrit, who was standing behind Lin Ye, let out a cold laugh.
“It’s good enough that we don’t hate her,” Kado sighed. “Back then, we all hoped that Ifrit could live a normal life, and now it seems that she is on the right track. It’s just a pity that there’s nothing more we can do. Ifrit is in your care.”
His words were very sincere. But for some reason, even though Hermer had said something similar, the two gave Lin Ye a very different feeling.
Before he could figure out why, all the people who had gone into the factory to test the equipment came out. Hammer spotted Kado immediately and looked surprised.
"Director Kado?"
Kado smiled and looked at Himer: "It's been a long time, Himer."
Himer stepped forward, her face beaming with joy: "I didn't expect you to come too."
“Yes,” Kado nodded. “I’ve been with them ever since the group disbanded. So, is the check done? Are all the instruments working properly?”
“Absolutely no problem, they are all qualified products,” Hermer said with a smile. “After so many years, they are still so well preserved. We’ve gotten a great deal.”
“Don’t say that.” Kado shook his head. “You’ve had a tough time raising Ifrit on your own these past few years. Consider these instruments as compensation from us old folks.”
Seeing that Himer and Kado were chatting happily, Lin Ye gradually lowered his guard. However, he noticed that Ifrit was still frowning and looked very unhappy.
"What's wrong?" Lin Ye asked Ifrit. "You seem to really dislike that person."
Ifrit stared at Kado and slowly said, "I really want to burn him."
“…All you do all day is burn, burn, burn.” Lin Ye sighed. “That’s your mother’s boss.”
"I feel like you're insulting me again."
"No, I am a psychologist with professional ethics. I never swear," Lin Ye said seriously.
Ifrit curled her lip, then looked at the researchers standing next to Kado and muttered, "They have a really unpleasant smell about them."
"A really unpleasant smell?"
"Yeah, it's that kind of smell that I hate so much I want to burn it all to the ground."
"What the hell is this smell? You're trying to burn someone alive! Stop making excuses!"
Lin Ye deeply felt that the road to educating Ifrit was long and arduous.
“Hannah already told you, didn’t she?” Kado and Himer said. “We can’t bring those large instruments into Lungmen.”
"Yes, Hannah already said so," Hamer nodded. "We can go pick it up in a couple of days."
“Very good.” Kado nodded in satisfaction, then sighed, “After the group was dissolved, these machines were never used by us. Now that they are in your hands, I hope you can make good use of them.”
“We definitely will.” Himer extended another invitation to Kado, “Director, if possible, I hope you can join Rhodes Island.”
“Rhodes Island? It seems like a nice place, but it’s no longer suitable for me.” Kado shook his head, pointed to the other researchers, and said with a smile, “I have my own things to do with these guys now.”
"Is that so?" Hamer said with some regret. "Rhodes Island needs someone like you right now."
Cardo still smiled and refused.
While they were chatting, the Rhodes Island operators had already loaded several small devices into the vehicle, and it was time to leave. Before leaving, they stood on the side of the street.
“We’ll meet again,” Kado said to Himer, then looked at Ifrit with a smile, “And you, Ifrit, I hope you won’t have a long face when we meet next time.”
Ifrit still looked very unhappy.
"Oh, right, there's one more thing," Kado said, as if remembering something, and asked Himeru, "I heard that Rhodes Island and Lungmen have a very good relationship?"
“It’s a partnership,” Hamer replied.
"Does Lungmen know about this deal with us?" Kado asked.
Himer shook his head: "I don't know."
“That’s good. It’s best not to let them know,” Kado said. “We have some cooperation with Lungmen, and they’ve tried to buy these machines from us, but we refused. If they find out we sold the machines to you…”
“I understand, Director. We only have a cooperative relationship with Lungmen, and we're not very familiar with each other privately,” He Mo said earnestly. “But anyway, thank you.”
Kado nodded in satisfaction, but inwardly he was sneering.
If Lungmen was completely unaware, then the Lungmen Guard Bureau had no way to intervene. In that case, with just a few people here, fighting against that mad organization... it can only be said that the reconstruction of Rhine Lab is in sight.
Kado couldn't help but clench his fist, but he still maintained a smile on his face: "Well then, see you the day after tomorrow."
No sooner had he finished speaking than a screeching sound of tires came from the end of the street.
The next second, a yellow sports car pulled up in front of them with a spectacular drift.
Everyone was stunned, then watched as the sports car window slowly rolled down, revealing a pretty face wearing sunglasses. Before anyone could react, they saw the sports car owner waving at someone.
"Hey, you rascal," the man said with a laugh. "What a coincidence! It's rare to run into you while I'm in the suburbs on business. Perfect timing, I forgot to save your number last night and didn't know where to look for you. Hurry up and get in the car, the show starts in a few hours."
The researchers from Rhine Lab looked at the person who had been greeted—Lin Ye—with completely bewildered expressions.
Lin Ye was also completely dumbfounded, dumbfounded because the way this rich woman made her entrance was far too extravagant.
"Hmm? So many unfamiliar faces, are they all your colleagues?" The woman slowly took off her sunglasses, revealing bright eyes. "Let me introduce myself, I am Swire, a senior superintendent of the Lungmen Guard Bureau."
Chapter 162 She won't survive tonight.
Half an hour later, the sports car drove into the streets of Longmen.
This was the first time Lin Ye had ever ridden in such a supercar; in his previous life, he had only ever seen such cars online. Although he had fantasized about buying one once he had money, with a beautiful young woman in the passenger seat, he never imagined he could ride in one even without money, with a beautiful young woman beside him—only the people in the driver's and passenger seats were different. Lin Ye glanced at Swire, who was wearing sunglasses, and suddenly felt like a gigolo being kept by a rich woman.
Then he recalled the scene from half an hour earlier.
When Swire rolled down the car window, took off her sunglasses, and introduced herself as a senior superintendent from the Lungmen Guard Bureau, Lin Ye clearly saw the faces of the Rhine Labs members turn green. Their gazes towards him were incredibly complex, as if to say, "So it was you who led the Japanese... no, the police, here." At that moment, Lin Ye genuinely had the urge to snatch the sunglasses from Swire, put them on, and coolly declare, "Actually, I'm an undercover agent." The scene was undeniably awkward, but thankfully they weren't actually lawless gangsters. After a few brief pleasantries, Lin Ye got into Swire's sports car.
The Rhine Life employees watched him leave with expressions that said, "Holy crap, that kid's finally gone."
"You idiot," Swire, who was driving, spoke first. "You don't seem to be in a good mood."
Lin Ye sighed: "How can I be in a good mood with you making such an appearance?"
Swire frowned deeply and said unhappily, "Hey, what do you mean? I, a senior superintendent of the Royal Guard, personally came to pick up a good-for-nothing like you, what are you complaining about? Do you want me to come pick you up in a police car before you're happy?"
"No, no, no, I'm very happy, very happy." Lin Ye shook his head repeatedly. After all, he had witnessed the temper of this senior police superintendent before, and anyone who dared to express dissatisfaction would be asking for trouble. Then, as if remembering something, he looked at Swire with some confusion and asked, "By the way, what are you doing here?"
“Didn’t I just say? It’s official business, official business!” Swire said. “I was sent here by my superiors to carry out official business, and I just happened to see you, so I brought you back on the way.”
"Official business?" Lin Ye asked skeptically. "What official business?"
"What the hell!" Swire glared at Lin Ye. "You scoundrel, how dare you question this superintendent's official duties?"
"Otherwise, this is too much of a coincidence," Lin Ye said. "Longmen is so big, I don't believe we could run into each other here, and you're even driving a sports car! Aren't you on official business? Who drives a sports car on official business?"
“What can I do?” Swire said somewhat irritably. “Do you think I want to drive this car? Do you know that this is the worst car in my family?”
Lin Ye: "..."
“Besides, I really was here on official business.” Swire glanced at Lin Ye. “You think I came here specifically to pick you up? You’re overthinking it. There’s no one in Lungmen worth me personally picking up.”
Lin Ye: "..."
"Hey, why aren't you saying anything?"
"I don't even know what to say."
"Tsk tsk tsk, you good-for-nothing, you can't even chat properly." Swire sighed. "Alright, alright, although I didn't come here specifically to see you, my presence here today does have something to do with you."
"What does it have to do with me?" Lin Ye was somewhat flattered by Swire's admission. "How could it possibly have anything to do with me?"
"To be precise, it's with Rhodes Island and Rhine Lab."
"What the hell?"
"You're making a deal with Rhine Lab, aren't you?" Swire glanced at Lin Ye. "And it's some rather sensitive stuff."
Lin Ye immediately fell silent. He knew very well that speaking at this moment would make him a true traitor.
“Tsk, don’t be nervous,” Swire said. “It’s not a big deal. As far as I know, the real contraband didn’t enter Lungmen. So the Guard Bureau doesn’t have much to do with it.”
"...Then what are you doing here?"
“Whether we manage it or not, we still need to confirm it. Not Rhodes Island, but those people from Rhine Labs,” Swire explained. “Rhine Labs doesn’t have a good reputation in Lungmen. These guys disappeared for so many years after Rhine Labs disintegrated. During that time, many forces wanted to know where they went, after all, the technology that Rhine Labs possessed was something many places wanted.”
"Including Lungmen?"
Swire glanced at Lin Ye and said, "I don't know about that. I'm just looking at it from the perspective of the Guard Bureau. Over the years, Rhine Labs has been selling prohibited drugs to some small organizations and forces, some of which have even reached Lungmen. However, we don't have conclusive evidence, and fortunately, it hasn't caused any harm yet. But after learning that these guys from Rhine Labs had arrived in Lungmen, my superiors still asked me to come and take a look, and also to give them a warning so they won't cause trouble in Lungmen."
Lin Ye understood something: "You were just trying to give them a warning?"
“More or less?” Swire said. “Let them understand that the Guard knows what they’re doing.”
Lin Ye seemed to realize something and looked at Swire: "Is this also a warning to Rhodes Island?"
“Your interpretation is fine.” Swire shrugged. “We know Rhodes Island is different from many other factions. You need those instruments and drugs for research. However, it cannot be conducted within Lungmen, nor can those contraband items be traded within Lungmen. These are the ironclad rules. The rest is up to you.”
"Okay." Lin Ye nodded. "I'll take your words back with me."
“That’s fine,” Swire said with a smile. “Alright, my work is done, now we can get ready to go see the show.”
"You're really going?"
"Otherwise what?" Swire retorted. "I've already given you the tickets. By the way, you brought them with you, right?"
"I did bring it."
“Then there’s no problem.” Swire seemed very happy. “I can finally take a break. I’ve been so busy lately.”
Lin Ye verbally agreed with Swire, but his mind was still on Rhine Lab. According to Swire, these guys at Rhine Lab didn't seem to be good people, much like what Saria had said. He wondered if this deal would run into problems.
Yes, I should talk to Himer about it when I get back.
As Lin Ye was thinking this, he didn't notice that a man in a trench coat was taking pictures of their car on the street.
After they left, the man took out his phone and dialed a number.
“It’s me, yes, I’ve spotted Beatrice Swire. She’s heading to the theater with a pretty boy,” the man said in a low voice. “Don’t worry, she won’t live past tonight.”
