"Feed her her medicine."
Chapter Thirty-Two: Even if you're a demon, you still need to take your medicine! (Part 2)
The medical staff gave Lin Ye an important task: to feed Nightingale her medicine.
It wasn't a psychotropic drug, but rather a medication to regulate Nightingale's body. After all, Nightingale herself was an infected person, and a rather severe one at that, which even affected her lower limbs. Nightingale had been staying in the observation room all day yesterday, so Lin Ye hadn't noticed until today when he discovered that Nightingale's legs were very inconvenient, and she had to rely on the black staff in her hand to walk.
Therefore, in order to control the further deterioration of the virus within Nightingale's body, Rhodes Island has been treating her with medication. It could be said that from the moment she arrived at Rhodes Island, she became a walking pharmacy. Previously, the medical staff would only administer the medication after she entered a dormant state, so there was no resistance. But now, that's different; Nightingale seems to have an instinctive aversion to these drugs. The moment Lin Ye took out the medicine bottle, Nightingale released her grip on Lin Ye's clothes and slowly took a step back.
"You should take your medicine," Lin Ye said.
Nightingale could understand Lin Ye's words, so she shook her head to indicate her refusal.
Lin Ye sighed.
He felt that his work at Rhodes Island hadn't changed much since arriving. Back in Chernobog, his daily work involved treating, comforting, medicationing, and sterilizing animals. At Rhodes Island, his job was to treat, comfort, medication, and sterilize the operators there.
Hmm? Did I mention an extra job?
Lin Ye pondered for a moment, then suddenly realized.
Oh, sterilization isn't necessary for now.
"Liz," Lin Ye called Nightingale by her name directly, "You should take your medicine."
The nightingale took another step back and turned to look out the window. Under the azure sky, a small bird flew by, its reflection shimmering in the nightingale's pale blue eyes, before slowly disappearing into the horizon.
Then the nightingale said softly, "That bird often appears in my dreams. Sometimes I chat with it, and sometimes I become its appearance... I envy it very much."
The nightingale's words stirred a pang of sadness in Lin Ye, so he followed the nightingale's gaze to the window and softly said, "Do you envy it?"
"Ah."
"We all envy birds because they can fly."
“Not only that,” the nightingale gently shook her head, “I also envy it for not having to take medicine.”
Lin Ye: "..."
Nightingale hugged her staff tightly and said with a hint of determination, "I won't take the medicine."
“Liz…”
"Don't call my name while holding the medicine." Nightingale looked at Lin Ye seriously. "That will make me feel that you are as disgusting as the medicine."
Lin Ye couldn't help but facepalm, thinking that working at Rhodes Island was definitely more difficult. He hadn't felt Nightingale was such a disobedient brat yesterday; she was so talkative, it was a complete character mishap. Tsk, it was much easier when he was a veterinarian in Chernobog. Whether you were a vicious wolfhound or an adorable kitten, once you were in his hands, you'd obediently be neutered… uh, he meant take the medicine. If you didn't want to, he'd just pin you down and shove it into your mouth.
However, this tactic cannot be used against Nightingale. Not only is he no match for Nightingale, but if he does it, a bunch of people from Rhodes Island will definitely come out to kill him, such as a certain demon who is read as a doctor but written as a sword saint.
So we still need to reason with her and appeal to her emotions. We need to use deep concern to tell Nightingale... even if you're a devil, you still need to take your medicine!
Zilan, who had been watching for a while, suddenly laughed. After all, she had been thoroughly outmaneuvered by Lin Ye here the day before yesterday (in her opinion), and now Lin Ye had been outmaneuvered by Nightingale. Truly, what goes around comes around; no one escapes the wrath of heaven. So she didn't pursue the matter of Lin Ye being late on his first official day, and more importantly…
Zilan looked at the nightingale.
It's so good that this poor child was saved.
Zilan thought to herself.
After Lin Ye and Nightingale had been at an impasse for a while, Zilan walked up to Lin Ye and handed him a folder.
"Uh?" Lin Ye took the folder and asked, "What's this?"
"Here's a form for you to take notes," Zilan said. "You're a psychiatrist on Rhodes Island now, even though you're still in your probationary period. You should still do the basic work, right? This is your medical record. Today is your first day on the job, and Nightingale should be your first patient. Take notes and make sure you get off to a good start."
As Zilan spoke, she handed her pen to Lin Ye.
Lin Ye took the pen, smiled, and then opened the folder to start writing.
"Thank you, but I think you've said something wrong."
"Hmm? Where did I say something wrong?" Zilan asked, somewhat curious.
"Compared to a psychologist, I prefer to see myself as a counselor," Lin Ye said as he wrote. "So those who come to me are people who need my help, not people who are sick, don't you think?"
Zilan's lips parted slightly as she looked at Lin Ye in surprise. She hadn't expected him to say such a thing. The last trace of resentment she felt towards Lin Ye vanished, even though it had mostly disappeared yesterday. She realized Lin Ye was truly a very good person; she had really misunderstood him before. Shanling was right; he was indeed a trustworthy person.
Zilan couldn't help but smile: "You're right..."
But her smile vanished when she saw what Lin Ye had written on the paper.
Because Lin Ye's note for Nightingale on the report was—"She's mentally ill."
Zilan looked at Lin Ye expressionlessly: "You're so shameless."
Lin Ye crossed out the note somewhat awkwardly: "Sorry, I just wrote it by accident."
He was really getting into it; back when he worked at the vet, he'd just write down whatever problems the animals had. Gastroenteritis meant the stomach was upset, irritability meant the brain was messed up, and neutering meant it was a permanent cure. It was one of the few quirky hobbies in his monotonous life, but he never expected it would get him into this mess.
Zilan no longer wanted to speak to Lin Ye; she already felt that Lin Ye was a hypocrite who spoke insincerely. So she casually gave a few instructions, indicating that the reception room was temporarily for Lin Ye's work, and that they would consider a dedicated psychological clinic after the Doctor or Amiya returned, before leaving the reception room for the medical room. After Zilan left, Nightingale approached her.
"Who's out of their mind?" Nightingale asked.
Lin Ye awkwardly slung the folder behind his back, saying, "I'm out of my mind, I'm out of my mind."
"Oh." Nightingale nodded. "If you're mentally ill, take your medicine."
"Yes, yes, take your medicine, take your medicine." Lin Ye nodded repeatedly, then realized something was wrong. After thinking for a while, he got angry and yelled, "You fucking take your medicine!"
Author's BB:
It's strange, the nightingale's eyes appear pale green on the webpage, but in the game they're pale blue...
Chapter Thirty-Three: Doctor, do you have a moment?
Lin Ye closed the pen cap, looked up at the nightingale sitting by the window watching the scenery, and sighed softly.
The current time is 11:23. This is his first official day at work, and sitting in front of him is his first formal patient, a patient who is giving him a headache. Even though he's a psychiatrist, he insists on nagging the patient like a nanny to take her medication, but the patient just won't listen. After much pleading and cajoling, from nine o'clock until now, she finally reluctantly agreed, but only to take half. Lin Ye really wanted to cut open her brain. What was she thinking? She had already decided to take it, but only half!
The medical staff advised her to take three pills at a time, but she forced herself to take one and a half, and then returned the other half to Lin Ye, as if she had made a huge concession.
Good heavens! Taking medicine is for your own good, not my! Why do I have to beg you to take it?!
This is what frustrates Lin Ye. Although it's not the first time he's encountered this situation—many pets at the veterinary hospital have refused treatment, since they're just animals and can't be communicated with—the director usually sends Lin Ye to handle these cases.
When dealing with such pets, Lin Ye usually has two approaches: one firm and one gentle.
If you want to be tough, you have to hit him. Actually, Lin Ye not only has a natural affinity for animals, but also a natural intimidation factor. Many seemingly ferocious animals seem quite afraid of him. For example, the hospital once took in a seriously ill stray cat that was extremely uncooperative with treatment, baring its teeth at the doctors who tried to treat it, and even biting two of them. Then Lin Ye stepped in. He originally intended to soothe it, but before he could even touch its body, it bit him hard.
At that time, Lin Ye was in a bad mood because he was being ostracized by the other doctors, and he became even angrier after being bitten by a stray cat. So he grabbed the stray cat and bit it back.
After that, the stray cat cooperated well with the treatment and became much more docile. It even started to fawn over others without Lin Ye needing to pet it; its personality had completely changed. From then on, Lin Ye discovered another talent of his, and often he didn't even need to say a word. For example, if he encountered stray dogs barking at him on the street, he only needed to bark back, and the dogs wouldn't dare bark at him anymore. Over time, the fierce stray cats and dogs near the pet hospital became afraid of Lin Ye, and for some reason, the other doctors at the hospital stopped ostracizing him.
They probably acknowledged Lin Ye's abilities.
Of course, most of the time Lin Ye's approach to animals was to soothe them. As long as they weren't too aggressive and wouldn't let him near them at all, he would gently stroke their entire bodies, and then the animals would obediently comply, whether it was taking medicine, getting injections, or being spayed/neutered, they would all follow Lin Ye's lead. So, while Lin Ye's work at the veterinary hospital was somewhat boring, he was indeed quite adept at it. However, on his first day at Rhodes Island, he discovered that his previous experience couldn't be directly applied.
Although his abilities are effective against demons.
But faced with this formidable demon, should he take a bite, or...?
Ok?
He's clearly a psychologist, so how come his thinking is like that of a scoundrel?
Lin Ye fell into deep thought.
While Lin Ye was brainstorming, Miss White Demon Nightingale was gazing out the window at the birds flying past the clouds, a hint of envy in her clear eyes. She had always been a very quiet child, and if no one talked to her, she could sit in that spot all day. But that was only if Lin Ye was by her side, though she didn't know why.
But she felt like she was having a dream. In the dream, she was trapped in a closed prison, surrounded by people who wanted to kill her, while inside was endless darkness. She hugged her knees, wanting to cry but unable to, wanting to scream but unable to make a sound. Her body was frozen, and despair and fear grew like bamboo shoots after a spring rain within her. What changed everything was a hand that tore open the prison, letting in light, dispelling all the darkness and the fear in her heart.
Was this a dream? She didn't know, because she had no memories of the past, but she remembered this feeling.
She could only experience this feeling when Lin Ye was by her side. If Lin Ye wasn't around, it felt as if the darkness and the prison were about to trap her again.
She felt an instinctive panic and fear of everyone except Lin Ye, who was the only person she didn't dislike.
Why is this so?
The nightingale couldn't understand it.
"Liz, it's time to take your medicine." Lin Ye's voice rang out again. "You can take the remaining half tablet too."
Nightingale turned her head and glanced at Lin Ye.
What an annoying person, stay away from me.
……
Lin Ye was unaware that Nightingale, seemingly lost in thought, was actually engaged in a whirlwind of activity. He was simply trying to figure out how to persuade her to take the remaining pill and a half, as this was his first job since taking office. At the same time, he was also wondering when he would encounter his next "patient," because Zilan had mentioned that when she worked part-time as a psychological counselor, she practically never saw a single person seeking help in a year. Would Lin Ye face a similar situation? Even though he had successfully helped Nightingale, it was unlikely that he would gain the trust of the other operators.
Will he end up having only Nightingale as his patient for a long time?
That would be too boring. Although it would be easy, it would greatly diminish his status on Rhodes Island. This doesn't align with his original intention of "participating in the game."
Moreover, he is not yet a full-fledged operator of Rhodes Island, although he will be promoted to a full-fledged operator once Amiya returns, barring any unforeseen circumstances. However, Lin Ye hopes to be promoted because he has "become someone trusted and needed by the operators," rather than "Nightingale's male babysitter."
Although it was his first day in office, Lin Ye had already begun to think about this rather important issue. Of course, the main reason was that he was bored. The certain demon was completely ignoring him, which was really troublesome.
When will a cute, obedient animal-eared girl come to find me?
Ideally, she would burst through the door in the next second, looking flustered and with dazed eyes, saying something like, "Doctor, I need your help."
That's what makes life interesting!
As Lin Ye was thinking this, the door was suddenly pushed open.
A tall man with bull horns walked in and, upon seeing Lin Ye, asked in a deep voice, "Doctor, do you have a moment?"
Looking at those massive pectoral muscles, Lin Ye felt something inside him shatter with a "bang."
Can I say I'm busy?
Chapter Thirty-Four: A Plea for Help from the Macho Man of Sherag
So, is it true that there will always be a gap between fantasy and reality?
Lin Ye, sitting opposite the burly man and brewing tea, couldn't help but think this.
There was no bewildered, desperately seeking help animal-eared girl, only a burly, horned man with a worried expression.
Is that the Bull Demon King? He's so muscular! Those thick pectoral muscles are about to burst out of that black bodysuit. Seriously, why is a grown man wearing a bodysuit? My roommate never wears one!
