Author's Note: I'm experiencing writer's block. I always get stuck for a while when I finish a volume. I finished this chapter this morning, but I wasn't satisfied with it when I was about to publish it, so I deleted it and rewrote it. I really need to spend more time brainstorming the plot for the new volume.
Chapter 466 Lin Ye, the Great Villain?
Since it was almost midnight when he returned to the island, Lin Ye went straight back to his dorm to sleep. Lying on his familiar bed again, Lin Ye felt all the fatigue and drowsiness he had accumulated over the past few days disappear. Indeed, there's no place like home. The comfort was so great that Lin Ye didn't even want to take a shower; he simply hugged the blanket and fell asleep.
Lin Ye had planned to sleep until noon the next day, but he was woken up by his phone ringing just as dawn broke. He answered groggily, and Warfarin's strong voice came from the other end: "Lin Ye, you're back on the island, right? Come to my place quickly."
Lin Ye, still confused, almost misheard it as "Come into my bowl quickly," and asked weakly, "What is it?"
"What else do you want? What else could I possibly want from you?" Warfarin said. "Hurry up, hurry up. I've been holding back for days. I was planning to come see you last night, but Kal'tsit said you've been working too hard these past few days, and if I don't take it easy, I could easily hurt your health. So I didn't go last night and have been holding back until now. You should be better by now, right? Come over quickly, I've prepared everything and am just waiting for you."
The only person who could make something like blood collection sound so easily misunderstood is Warfarin... no, only Warfarin and Nightingale. Uh, that doesn't seem right either. It should be said that only Warfarin, Nightingale, Shining, Skadi, and... damn it, it seems like everyone around him is someone who can't speak properly.
If this had happened when he first started working, Lin Ye would have reacted to such words, but he was used to it now. Feeling completely unmoved, and even wanting to continue sleeping, he turned over, changed his position, and said to Warfarin, "I haven't rested enough yet. I'll go over this afternoon."
After saying that, he hung up the phone and planned to go back to sleep.
However, less than ten seconds later, the phone rang again, and needless to say, it was Warfarin's.
“Sleep? What are you sleeping for?” Warfarin said. “Don’t you have a saying in Yan Country? Something like, ‘Why sleep so much before death, when you’ll have plenty of time to sleep after?’ So stop sleeping! Do you know that because you’ve run out of blood samples, my experiments have been suspended for several days? For a scholar, not being able to conduct experiments is…”
Snapped.
Lin Ye hung up the phone again.
Five seconds later, it rang again.
"Being unable to conduct experiments is the greatest torment. Can you bear to see me suffer like this? I'm not young anymore, I'm hundreds of years older than you, I should be your grandmother's generation. Doesn't your Yan country say you respect the elderly..."
Lin Ye was speechless. How come he hadn't realized Warfarin was so talkative before? He really wanted to hang up or just shut down the phone, but he also felt that if he did, Warfarin would probably be here in ten minutes. So Lin Ye could only say helplessly, "Let me sleep for another hour, just one hour, okay?"
"Tsk, really. Okay then, one hour, I'll call you back in an hour."
And that's how Warfarin finally calmed down.
Lin Ye continued sleeping, still feeling very sleepy. Despite being interrupted many times by Warfarin, he would fall asleep again in less than three minutes. However, just then, his phone rang again, and this time Lin Ye was completely unable to sleep. His belated morning grumpiness erupted like a volcano. He angrily picked up the phone, answered it, and yelled, "Are you fucking done yet?! Don't think you can do whatever you want just because you've lived for hundreds of years!"
However, the response from the other side was quite calm.
"I only lived for twenty years."
Lin Ye was taken aback at first, but when he realized who was on the other end of the phone, his confused mind cleared up instantly.
"Skadi?!"
"Hmm," Skadi replied casually, "What's your favorite color?"
"Huh? What color do you like?" Lin Ye asked, somewhat surprised. "Why are you suddenly asking this?"
"I just wanted to ask."
Why did you call so early in the morning just to ask what color it is? Although Lin Ye found it a bit strange, he still answered honestly, "White, I guess."
White?
"Yes, I like blue, white and red."
Skadi was silent for a moment, then said, "You're so troublesome, you can only choose one."
"Then let's go with white."
"Okay, goodbye." Skadi hung up the phone immediately.
Lin Ye hadn't reacted yet when the busy signal came on, he realized that Skadi had really called about this issue.
Fuck it.
……
On the other side, Skadi, having hung up the phone, looked up at the wall of masks and said to the shopkeeper, "I want the white mask."
The shop owner, a man from Yan, smiled at Skadi and said, "Miss, this isn't a mask, it's a facial makeup, a unique part of our Yan culture."
Skadi gave a soft "hmm." She wasn't interested in culture or anything like that; she just remembered Lin Ye liked masks, so she thought she'd buy him one when they passed a mask shop. But there were so many kinds of masks there that Skadi didn't know which one to choose. Although she remembered that Lin Ye had chosen a red and white fox mask last time, they didn't have it here, so she decided to just call and ask him what color he liked. Now that she had the answer, choosing became much easier.
“I want the white one,” Skadi told the shopkeeper.
"White?" The shopkeeper looked at the white face mask, then hesitated. "Miss, I don't really recommend white. Since you're buying it as a gift, right?"
"Ah."
"But white masks don't have a good meaning in our Yan country," the shopkeeper explained. "You may not know this, but in our Yan country, actors who wear white masks usually play villains."
"You big slut?"
"Yes," the boss nodded, "a great villain."
Skadi thought for a moment, then nodded: "Then there's no problem, I'll take this one."
The shop owner was immediately bewildered. He really wanted to ask Skadi if she bought it as a prank rather than a gift. But after thinking about it, he gave up the idea. Whether it was a prank or not, as long as the customer was happy, that was all that mattered.
"Okay then," the shopkeeper said cheerfully, "I'll wrap it up for you then."
“And the one over there, I’ll take that too,” Skadi said.
"The one over there?" The shopkeeper looked up. "The black one?"
Skadi hummed in agreement, then said softly, "Because I like the darkness of the night."
Chapter 467 The Most Trusted Person (4K)
"Hmm? So punctual?" Warfarin looked at Lin Ye's tired face and put down the phone. "I was going to call you to wake you up, but I didn't expect you to come. Looks like you didn't get enough sleep, did you? Is it because you couldn't bear to keep an old person like me waiting for too long, haha?"
Lin Ye rolled his eyes at Warfarin, annoyed.
Skadi's phone call dashed Lin Ye's hopes of getting one last hour of sleep; he really didn't want to experience being woken up from a deep sleep again. So he simply got up, washed up, had breakfast at the cafeteria, and then leisurely made his way to Warfarin's place, arriving exactly one hour later.
"Tsk tsk tsk." Looking at Lin Ye, who sat slumped in a chair as soon as he entered the room, Warfarin couldn't help but shake her head repeatedly. "Look at how listless you are. You're still young, yet you can't even compare to me, a vampire who's hundreds of years old. It's too embarrassing."
"It would be a miracle if I could even compare," Lin Ye said listlessly. "Speaking of which, why have you been using your age to put people down lately? Weren't you quite concerned about people saying you were old before?"
"Would I care about something like that?" Warfarin flicked her hair and said, "Age is the least important thing for immortals, bar none. But I've suddenly realized that using age to intimidate people is a pretty good thing. From now on, no matter who argues with me, I can just say, 'My life experience is longer than thirty-two of you combined,' and they'll definitely have nothing to say."
Lin Ye's lips twitched involuntarily, thinking that Warfarin's words actually made a lot of sense. Just like in his previous life, the phrase elders loved to use to admonish younger generations was, "I've eaten more salt than you've eaten rice," and this was also the phrase younger generations found hardest to refute, because refutation was pointless. Warfarin was old enough to be one of Lin Ye's elders, but because she looked so young, Lin Ye never regarded her as a grandmother; he simply saw her as an unreliable vampire.
Seeing that Lin Ye didn't seem interested in talking to her, Warfarin also felt a bit bored, so she stopped arguing and took out a basket of medical equipment that she had prepared beforehand: "Come, come, I heard you were seriously injured in Lungmen this time, it really scared me. Come here quickly so I can check you out and see if any parts are damaged."
Even though Lin Ye was completely exhausted, he was startled by Warfarin's words. Seeing Warfarin carrying various pieces of equipment toward him, he immediately sat up straight and glared at her: "What are you going to do?!"
"I'll give you a medical check-up," Warfarin said matter-of-factly.
Why do I need a physical exam?
"Hey, can't you just listen to me? I'm doing this for your own good," Warfarin said. "Think about it, are the doctors who did your physical exams as reliable as me? Forgive me for being blunt, but even though being a doctor is just a side job for me, those so-called 'professional doctors' can't compare to me."
Seeing Warfarin's kind smile, Lin Ye couldn't help but shiver: "No need, don't come any closer, just a blood test is fine, I don't want any other tests!"
"Hmm? Why are you so resistant?" Warfarin's eyes narrowed slightly. "Could it be that your body is already..."
"No pineapple, pineapple."
"...What's that?"
"No, no, no." Lin Ye shook his head. "I was just saying it casually."
"Tsk, you're really something. Okay, listen to me, don't move, let me check your body."
At the hospital, Lin Ye was already exhausted both physically and mentally from the countless examinations. Now, Warfarin was going to do it again, and anyone could tell that Warfarin's examinations would be even more terrifying than the doctor's. So Lin Ye firmly refused, like a respectable young woman saying, "If you force me any further, I'll kill myself," facing a lustful... cough cough, the analogy doesn't seem quite right.
"You really are something else." Warfarin shook her head, put down the equipment in her hands, and said, "Alright, I won't lie to you. I heard that you've already been able to successfully use Originium Arts."
"Hmm, so what?"
"What's wrong? You're asking what's wrong?" Warfarin glared at Lin Ye and said in an exaggerated tone, "Oh, my little brother, are you kidding me?"
Lin Ye: "..."
This inexplicable slang from the translation is really asking for a beating.
“You still don’t understand your body’s condition,” Warfarin said. “The ‘L cells’ in your blood can devour and dissolve all Originium particles, which is why you couldn’t feel the power of Originium before and couldn’t use Originium Arts. I’ve said before that if you want to use Originium Arts, you need to have at least an egg-sized piece of pure Originium implanted in your body. But right now… you don’t have such a piece of pure Originium implanted in your body, do you?”
Lin Ye rolled his eyes: "Of course not... Is that why you suddenly wanted to examine me?"
“Yes, because I’ve realized I still don’t know enough about your body.” Warfarin scrutinized Lin Ye’s entire body with an aggressive gaze, her voice tinged with excitement. “As the only original human I could find, your body is incredibly mysterious to me, a mysteriousness brimming with allure…”
"Can you please not speak in such an easily misunderstood way?"
"Oh dear," Warfarin said with a grin, "Are you shy?"
Lin Ye really wanted to leave this female devil.
"Alright, alright, enough joking around," Warfarin said. "I was thinking of giving you a full checkup, but it's not the right time yet. Rhodes Island just moved, and I still have to work with others to test the surrounding environment and prepare for unforeseen natural disasters. There's a lot to do, and the 'L Potion' project can't stop either, and Kal'tsit won't let me stop either. So, I'll have to wait until I'm completely free to explore your body."
Warfarin's words were full of regret, but Lin Ye felt goosebumps just listening to them. He didn't know if Warfarin was deliberately using this phrasing, but anyway, he decided to change the subject: "Is there still no progress on 'L-potion'?"
This topic made Warfarin roll her eyes: "What do you think I'm doing? How could a research project of this level make progress in just one or two months? It would be considered fast if we could solve the problems we've discovered so far within five years. If we discover new problems along the way, we'll have to find ways to solve them all."
"...Is it that slow?"
"Still think it's too slow?" Warfarin held out her hand to Lin Ye. "If you think it's too slow, let me draw hundreds of buckets of blood first."
"...Are you kidding me?"
“What do you think?” Warfarin said. “If we had enough samples, I could certainly speed up the experiment, but the problem is that you’re the only one with ‘L cells’ in your body right now. To avoid harming your body, we can only draw a tiny bit of blood each time, but the problems we face are countless. Under these circumstances, it would be a miracle if we could solve it in five years…”
As she spoke, her brows furrowed slightly.
“No, I can’t say that God was very kind to me, I don’t believe in God.” Warfarin puffed out her almost non-existent chest and said with a little pride, “I should say that I was very helpful.”
Lin Ye could always sense a mysterious confidence emanating from Warfarin, a confidence he had only ever felt from her. Perhaps it was because she had lived long enough and possessed a wealth of experience and knowledge in various fields. However, if asked to articulate specifically just how capable Warfarin was, Lin Ye couldn't give a concrete answer.
"Speaking of which," Lin Ye said, "are you the only one capable of conducting research and experiments related to blood?"
