"Oh dear, it's really tragic. There's nothing we can do. What can we do? The people there are just unlucky. If they're born in a place like that, the Demon Dynasty will invade. There's nothing we can do about it."

"That's what they say, but isn't the Demon Dynasty now an inevitable trend?"

One of the short-haired youths looked around, not bothering to hide it, and said with a smile, "I'm not afraid to tell you, actually... quite a few sects in our Lantian Empire have already submitted to the Demon Dynasty, and I reckon... our Sansang City is about to follow suit."

"You can't just say things like that."

The one who said this was a middle-aged man sitting at the same table as these young masters. His face was somewhat stern, but at this moment his face was flushed and his expression was gentle.

He had a curved sword at his waist, and judging from the aura emanating from its scabbard, this magical artifact was certainly no ordinary object.

In fact, next to his scabbard, on his belt, hung a jet-black square token.

Anyone with a modicum of common sense knows that this item... is proof of the Guardian Army that protects the frontier!

The general guarding the border was none other than Fang Yan, the sword cultivator revered as the Protector General of Lantian.

"What's wrong, Brother Yan... are you unhappy?"

“That’s not quite right.” The man called Brother Yan shook his head, glanced at the young men in front of him, and couldn’t help but chuckle, “It’s just that you shouldn’t say these things out loud. After all, I am a member of the Guardian Army. If General Fang hears what you’re saying, he’ll be beheaded.”

Upon hearing this, the young men burst into laughter.

Their laughter prompted the man surnamed Yan to chuckle as well, as if everyone at the table was mocking a general named Fang Yan.

The long-haired young man in purple robes raised his cup again, a playful expression on his face, as if he were teasing the middle-aged man: "Brother Yan, what are you and the rest of us pretending for?"

"Others may not know, but do you think we don't? How many of you in the Guardian Army have defected to the Demon Dynasty?"

"Go, go, go!"

The middle-aged man filled his glass with wine, then slammed his hand on the table, feigning anger, but a grin spread across his face as he said, "You bunch of brats know so much! Come on! Drink!"

"drink!"

The young masters present were all prominent figures in Sansang City, and they were very familiar with the Guardian Army, so they naturally knew some inside information.

And that is indeed the case.

Even within the Guardian Army, which guards the empire's borders, there have been quite a few traitors who have defected to the Demon Dynasty.

The sounds of laughter and chatter echoed in her ears. Sitting in an inconspicuous corner of the restaurant, the woman calmly poured wine into a simple gourd.

"Even the Guardian Army has traitors...?"

She murmured softly, then slowly rose to her feet.

A boy who looked no more than seventeen or eighteen years old, who was sitting in front of her, slowly stood up. When he spoke, his tone was icy cold: "Next, are we going to the Broken Wood City?"

“Go.” The woman was already used to the boy’s way of speaking, so she didn’t feel anything was wrong: “Since it’s a border area that has suffered from the invasion of the Demon Dynasty, there should be traces of that person over there…”

The boy knew what the woman was talking about and what the person she was referring to represented, so he nodded and quickly followed behind her.

However, before the two went downstairs, they happened to pass by the table where those young masters were.

The young man in purple robes with long hair suddenly froze. Before him appeared a woman's graceful figure. Although she was wearing a black Taoist robe that appeared out of nowhere, her snow-white abdomen was exposed, and her perfect, slender waist immediately made the young man's heart itch.

Add to that her shapely buttocks and that exquisite face that makes you want to tease her after just one glance, and the flame of desire made him swallow hard in the blink of an eye.

Not only him, but the other young masters also noticed the charming and eye-catching female cultivator at the same time, and immediately widened their eyes and stared straight at him.

"Wow... I didn't expect to see such a stunning beauty here!"

With flippant words uttered, the purple-robed young man immediately stood up and reached out to the woman's delicate, pink shoulder.

But the wicked smile on his face froze completely in the next second.

boom!

A figure was thrown from the second floor of the restaurant and crashed heavily to the ground dozens of meters away.

Everyone stared blankly at the black-haired woman in front of them, who seemed to have not moved at all. With their cultivation levels, they could not tell when she had made a move.

But the middle-aged man surnamed Yan was clearly drunk and not thinking clearly. Seeing that someone dared to attack these young masters, he immediately drew his sword and shouted angrily:

"Who the hell do you think you are? You dare to lay a hand on that young master? Believe me or not..."

Before he could finish speaking...

A hand then rested on his knife.

The next second, her neat short black hair fluttered in the breeze, and her delicate face was filled with cold anger in her sea-blue eyes.

She casually snapped it open with her right hand.

The curved knife in the middle-aged man's hand was suddenly twisted into a pretzel. The woman took the pretzel from the stunned man, and with a flick of her wrist, the entire magical artifact shattered into pieces of useless scrap metal with a violent air explosion.

What am I?

The woman stepped forward, and at the same time, the bandage on her right hand came off.

What appeared before everyone was an arm made of ice, but strangely, there seemed to be a few wisps of crimson fire in the center of the arm.

She grabbed the middle-aged man by the collar, her tone calm and firm.

"My name is Zhang Ruoxue."

"The kind of person who's going to keep you in bed for six months."

Bang bang bang! !

A series of air blasts were heard one after another.

The next instant, the other young men, including the middle-aged man, were also not spared. They were all hit in the chest by an iron fist and flew backward like kites with broken strings. Coincidentally, they all landed next to the young man in purple robes.

She glanced at the crowd below and the group of young men lying on the ground, said nothing, but turned around and said something to the white-haired boy beside her.

"Senior brother, let's go."

7. Meeting an old friend again.

Outside Sansang City.

There were a few villages nestled in the mountains between Sansang City and Suimu City, along the ancient road.

The villagers were used to living in this landscape that was neither barren nor rich, and they were unwilling to go to great lengths to squeeze into the city. Moreover, the city was full of complex and powerful figures, and if they were not careful with their words, they might offend some big shot, which could mean death.

Moreover, these surrounding villages are self-sufficient in farming and raising livestock, and the children in the villages are quite strong. If a cultivator were to pass by one day and take in one or two naturally gifted individuals, it would be a great blessing for these villages, like the whole family benefiting from the success of one person.

To put it bluntly, this is just a group of ordinary people.

At the village entrance, middle-aged women in their forties and fifties would occasionally cook large pots of food for other families' children. At the village end, Xiao Wang, who was chopping firewood, would work up a sweat in the logging area while glancing occasionally at the girls washing clothes by the river in the distance. The elderly men, too lazy to move, would sit in front of their houses in the afternoon sun, playing chess with expressions that were sometimes serious and sometimes triumphant.

They are just an ordinary group of people, living ordinary lives every day, basking in the sunshine and avoiding the dark clouds and rain.

Until one day, they could no longer escape it.

……

Crack! Crack!

As if possessing its own consciousness, the pitch-black flames rapidly spread outwards, devouring the thatched and bamboo-built house. Inside the house lay a middle-aged woman, unconscious and lying on the ground.

The sound of a baby crying reached my ears, first a fierce wail, then a slow, low murmur, and finally, silence.

The sky was black, blacker than ever before.

The ground was black, as if it had been baked by something, completely rotten. The grain planted in the field turned yellow and black from the roots and stems, eventually covered with a layer of gray, and then scattered like brittle paper in the evil wind.

Why did things turn out this way?

Nobody knows.

Everywhere you looked, there were corpses lying on the ground, lifeless, with black flames burning behind them. The bodies had been roasted alive into a pool of black mud, and this black mud seemed to have a consciousness of its own, twisting and writhing.

All over the place.

Wailing voices, screams of pain, roars, howls, women's sobs, old women's cries of surprise and panic, babies' cries, children's screams...

Rising and falling, these sounds evoked a poignant and tragic ode to despair in this small village.

There was only one person conducting this piece.

It was a figure in pure black, with an extremely black cloak swaying in the wind, and hair that was black with a few strands of light purple. Standing under the black sky and on the scorched earth, it seemed as if it had become one with everything around it.

Those emotionless eyes fell on the two people directly in front of them.

One male and one female.

The burly young man was holding the girl tightly in his arms. His dark gray shirt was already soaked with cold sweat. He was trembling all over, and although his arms were not under his control, they still seemed to have a consciousness and pulled the girl into his embrace.

He stared at the person in front of him, just staring, his eyes filled with panic and confusion, but he pressed the head of the timid girl in his arms against his chest, unwilling to let his beloved see things she shouldn't see.

"So that's how it is... Is this love?"

The dark figure spoke, and when it did, it was a cold, emotionless female voice.

Her long black hair danced wildly in the wind. She took a step forward, revealing her pale, expressionless, corpse-like face from the darkness. She looked at the young man who was protecting the girl, seemingly surprised and interested.

She was incredibly beautiful, so beautiful that the young man was stunned. He couldn't even believe that such a stunning beauty with such exquisite features and an ethereal aura was the culprit who killed the entire village... Such a beautiful person shouldn't be so cold-blooded.

But he was wrong, terribly wrong, because in a woman's eyes, there is no such thing as emotion.

It was as if she wasn't human at all.

The woman pulled with her right hand, and the young man felt a chill emanating from his entire body. His consciousness vanished instantly, and then his body went limp and he collapsed.

The young man, who had collapsed to the ground with wide-open eyes, opened his mouth, and a faint sphere of blood slowly emerged from it...

"Ah Jun... Ah Jun?!"

The girl in the young man's arms clearly noticed that her lover's strong arms had suddenly lost their strength. She crawled on the ground in a disheveled state, moved closer to the young man, and carefully cradled his head in her hands, her delicate body trembling uncontrollably.

She turned around, tears streaming down her face from panic, and the words seemed to be squeezed out through trembling teeth: "What did you do... Ah Jun..."

"He's still alive, at least for now."
