“Honorary advisor, the prefix is honorary,” Shinjo said with a smile. “No salary, right?”
“Yes, yes, yes.” Megure immediately said, “Brother Mori, I heard from Shinjo that you’ll be working for him, right? You must be very busy after that.”
"That's true." Kogoro Mouri nodded, then stopped dwelling on the matter and started drinking.
The drinking went on until very late, and the officers from the First Investigation Division had to be carried home. As for Kogoro Mouri, Shinjo asked Ran to help take him home.
Xiaolan looked at her father, who was completely drunk, and sighed helplessly. Just as she was about to take action...
The door to the izakaya was pushed open, and Eri Kisaki walked in. After seeing Ran there, she said to Shinjo with a hint of helplessness, "Why do you act like a child, always doing unnecessary things?"
“It’s not exactly a superfluous matter.” Shinjo rubbed his temples. “The other day, Himuro Reiji was released from prison and he caused trouble for this kid. Although the matter was resolved later, he is still planning to give up being a famous detective.”
"coward."
“Really? I also think he’s quite timid.” Shinjo looked at Eri Kisaki. “I’ll be going now, so I won’t disturb your family gathering.”
"Mom, Dad was just too..."
“I know everything, there’s no need to say anything more.” Eri Kisaki lifted the completely drunk Kogoro Mouri up. “The car is outside, help me carry him to the car.”
"Oh." Xiaolan didn't understand what had happened, but she knew one thing: as long as her mother didn't turn around and leave, it was a good thing.
On the other side
On the top floor of the Tokyo building, Vodka looked at the stack of proposals in front of him, his expression immediately falling. He didn't like looking at this kind of thing.
"What is this?" Vodka asked, his voice trembling slightly.
"This is your section on the company's work for the next few months," Commander Lei said expressionlessly. "This is the task Mr. Xincheng assigned to you."
"A mission?" Vodka's expression was priceless. "Stop messing around, okay? You know me, I can only be a driver at most. You're asking me to do clerical work, that's not appropriate."
“This is an order.” Commander Lei coughed. “Either you get back to your dorm now, or, for the sake of your boss, we can keep a freeloader.”
Hearing Riesling bring up Gin, Vodka couldn't back down, and retorted defiantly, "I'm not some nobody, I can..."
"What can you do? Computer security? Corporate security? Or business management, business planning, or human resource management?" Commander Lei began counting on his fingers. "Miss Karen is in charge of computer security; she's one of the world's top hackers. As for corporate security, that's Ms. Curaçao's responsibility. If you're not satisfied, you can challenge her to a duel. Ms. Koshimizu is in charge of business management and business planning, and I'll be in charge of human resources. If you think you're better than us in any of these areas, feel free to challenge me."
Vodka swallowed hard. His only two strengths were his fighting ability and his ability to drive.
But no matter how good he was at fighting, he didn't dare to challenge that crazy woman, Curaçao. He had heard how powerful she was within the organization.
As for driving, the driver must be reliable. Between himself, the undercover agent, and Ma Shengcheng, even a fool could see who was more reliable. If he dared to tell Xincheng he wanted to be his driver, Xincheng would probably kill him the very next day.
Looking at the information in front of him, Vodka sighed. "A lowly employee is fine," he thought. But the more he looked, the more something seemed off. This looked like the introduction of a legitimate company.
After flipping through a few more pages, Vodka's temper flared up instantly. This was no way to fool people like this!
Holding the documents, he went straight to Riesling and slammed them on the table. "A Cognac company, is this what they're doing now? The gaming industry, making game consoles, and even organizing competitions?"
“Yes, you read that right, this is our company's current business.” Riesling looked at Vodka and asked, “You haven't studied this area, so you're finding it a bit difficult, right?”
“Riesling, don’t play dumb with me!” Vodka stared at Riesling and said, “You know why I’m here, and you should know that…”
“Your boss sent you here to monitor Shinjo, to prevent him from doing anything reckless. He probably didn’t tell you to spy on the arms suppliers, did he?” Commander Lei pressed a button on the table. “Mr. Shinjo told me that you would do everything you could to find the weapons suppliers behind us and then give their contact information to Gin. I didn’t believe it before, but I didn’t expect you to actually do it. You’re really stupid.”
Vodka's face twitched. Being called stupid was certainly unpleasant, but judging from Riesling's expression, he didn't seem to have completely rejected him, so he chose to endure it.
“Giving you the weapons supplier’s contact information is not out of the question, and taking you to see him is also not out of the question.” Commander Lei said, looking at the open door. “Curaçao, the vodka is in your hands. As Mr. Shinjo said before, take him to the factory.”
"Factory? What factory?"
“Of course it’s a weapons factory.” Curaçao looked at Vodka. “Are you leaving or not? If you’re not leaving, I’ll knock you out and take you away.”
Vodka glanced at Curaçao, but in the end he obediently followed and got into a special car.
Curaçao was driving, sitting in the back seat next to Riesling. After getting in, Curaçao drove straight to their destination without saying a word.
Vodka initially tried to memorize the route, but as the car entered the ferry, he was completely lost.
This must be a private ferry, because the entire cabin can only accommodate three cars.
A dozen minutes later, when the boat stopped again, the car drove onto the island. It was an undeveloped island with a few scattered houses, all of which were dilapidated.
Curaçao drove directly into the village and stopped in front of a building. She and Riesling, one after the other, led the vodka into the building.
"Are you trying to tell me that the factory is inside this building?" Vodka's lips twitched.
“You’ll find out when you get inside.” Riesling kicked Vodka. “Why are you talking so much nonsense?”
"I'm afraid you two will drag me to a deserted island and kill me." Vodka rolled his eyes.
Knowing he couldn't escape, he started speaking with a certain amount of recklessness.
He was soon shocked by what he saw. After entering the building, they arrived at the basement, where there was a huge freight elevator. As the elevator descended, he saw a large portion of the workshop.
The underground space, spanning thousands of square meters, was brightly lit and housed entirely in fully automated workshops, likely producing bullets. There was a bullet factory here, and at a surprisingly fast pace.
Chapter 333 Plane Crash/Out of Control
"The owner of this factory, could it be Cognac?" Vodka asked, staring at the bullet production line below. "So those weapons weren't shipped from the Middle East, but manufactured here?"
“Bullets produced all over the world will have their origin marked on the bottom,” Curaçao said expressionlessly. “Bullets of such high quality with no markings on the bottom, who do you think has the capability to supply you with them? Don’t even think about contacting arms dealers privately. Gin probably already guessed this, which is why he didn’t give you any specific tasks.”
Vodka swallowed hard, but he couldn't force himself to accept the fact.
“So, now you can work in peace.” Riesling stood behind Vodka. “Given that you talked back to your boss, your salary this month will be reduced by 2 yen.”
"How much!" Vodka exclaimed anxiously.
"2 million yen."
"Wait, I think this can be discussed. I didn't mean to."
"No discussion!"
The base on Kyurojima Island
Newtown stroked his chin, waiting for news of the election. Today was Pisco's election day. If elected, he would be a member of parliament, and his influence would increase significantly.
Although he had made many preparations and was almost certain that Piske would get the seat of the councilor, Newtown was still a little flustered when the results came out.
“Pisco currently has six times the votes of the runner-up. Unless the runner-up engages in large-scale vote-buying, he is guaranteed to become a member of parliament.”
“Even if you say that, I’m still not at ease.” Shinjo stretched. “This guy’s past isn’t clean. Any one of the things he did in the past, if exposed, would add a lot of trouble to his election campaign.”
"Don't worry, I was prepared for this. I can't lose the information war. As long as they dare to release dirt on Pisco, I'll attack them from all sides." Karen seemed very confident in herself.
"That's good. By the way, what's been going on with the Mori and Kudo families lately?" Shinjo asked, stroking his chin.
"Nothing's happening yet; Conan still hasn't turned back into Shinichi Kudo. But it seems they're planning a farewell trip, and Sonoko seems to be involved too. Apparently, they're going to Osaka." Kallen shrugged. "I don't know any more details."
Shinjo started replaying Sonoko's trip to Osaka with the children in his mind; it seemed like only the time on the airship. Couldn't these people have a clearer understanding of their own luck and choose safer modes of transportation? If something happens on that airship, rescue will be extremely difficult!
Just then, a phone call came in; it was from Commander Lei.
"What is it? Tell me." Xincheng pressed the answer button.
“Vodka has already visited the arsenal; he seems to have given up.” Commander Ryssalonius’s voice carried a hint of relief.
"I understand. Don't contact me unless there's a special reason." Shinjo fiddled with the ballpoint pen in his hand. "By the way, go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art this Saturday and see Director Ochiai. He has some things I prepared for you all, one for each person."
"Is there a mission?" Commander Lei immediately perked up.
She used to be quite tired of her life as a secret agent, but after living a comfortable life for too long, she's now starting to miss it. Of course, if there's an opportunity in New City that allows her to get some action, she wouldn't refuse.
"I heard you guys mention wanting to buy property in Tokyo before. It seems you weren't comfortable living in the dorms, so I bought you some apartments," Shinjo said, stroking his chin. "The deeds and keys are with Uncle Ochiai. If there are extras, you can choose first, and the rest can be distributed among the staff."
“Boss, this isn’t appropriate.” Commander Lei was taken aback. “This is only our first year, and the company hasn’t turned a profit yet.”
"Profitable?" Xincheng's lips twitched. "If we wait until we make a profit before distributing benefits, I estimate it will be 10 years from now."
Did the company make money? Yes, but while they made a lot, they burned through even more. The base under construction on Jiuliang Island, with its various equipment research and development projects, was a money pit. Add to that Karen's arcade search plan, and any other conglomerate would have gone bankrupt.
Commander Lei nodded in agreement, and then hung up the phone to collect her benefits.
Just as Shin-cheng was about to stand up, the red lights in the entire command room turned on, instantly creating a tense atmosphere.
Shinjo suddenly stood up. "What's going on? Wasn't it said that the base's security was impenetrable?"
“It wasn’t an attack on the base.” Karen sounded a little nervous. “It was a patrol plane that crashed. It was the Hyuga-1. The crash site was outside the atmosphere. The pilot was Daigo, and he had already ejected.”
At this moment, the doors to the command room opened one after another, and Aquavit and Staut walked in directly.
"What happened?" Aquavit asked, frowning. "Has the base been hacked?"
“No, it’s Feiyan-1 that’s in trouble.” Shinjo picked up the helmet on the table. “Daigo has already ejected from the cockpit. I’ll go get him.”
“I’ll go with you!” Stout said immediately.
"The only spacecraft capable of operating outside the atmosphere is the Flying Swallow No. 1, which has only two seats. Where do you expect Daigo to sit?" Shinjo rolled his eyes.
“Why don’t you just let me go?” Sakata Yusuke suddenly interrupted Shinjo. “How about we both go together? There are two Flying Swallow No. 1s in the hangar.”
Shinjo looked at Sakata Yusuke with some doubt, "You know how to operate the escape pod?"
“You can assist me from the sidelines,” Sakata Yusuke said, forcing a smile.
This time, not only Shinjo, but also Stout and Aquawit looked at Sakata Yusuke with somewhat strange expressions.
They knew Sakata Yusuke's personality; he was fine as a low-level employee, but combatant work was simply not his forte. Now, he was suddenly thrust into a mission—an extraatmospheric flight mission, and a highly difficult one at that—which was somewhat...
“Tell me,” Shinjo said, looking at Sakata Yusuke. “Why did you stop me?”
"Because I saw footage of Mr. Shinjo and Mr. Daigo crashing on the same plane. I'm not cursing the boss and Daigo, I just really saw it." Sakata Yusuke seemed to have something to say but hesitated.
“Your brainwaves have shown abnormalities recently, and this abnormality has been documented,” Karen suddenly said. “You should know that person, Shinjo.”
"Who?"
"Kirino Makio".
Xincheng's lips twitched slightly. "Are you sure? This is no joke."
Stout and Aquawit also noticed Shinjo's subtle facial expressions, both showing some surprise. They knew Shinjo's training results; he was at the top of the rankings, second only to Daigo. Could it be that he was afraid simply because of a single sentence from Sakata Yusuke?
"You'd better not be reckless. That guy's prediction is, to some extent, 100% accurate," Karen's voice rang out again. "And the crash rate for you and Daigo being on the same plane is indeed ridiculously high."
Hearing Karen say that, Shinjo could only wave to Sakata Yusuke, signaling him to follow.
"No way, Sakata just said one sentence and the boss brought him along?" Stout looked incredulous.
“I don’t think so. The one who really made the boss decide to bring him along was that Kirino Makio,” Aquawit asked, looking at the computer. “Am I right, Miss Karen?”
"Yes."
