Chapter 46 The veil is so pretty, here's some milk tea for you.
Song Che walked into the shop with two gold coins in his pocket. After some haggling, he finally sold the cracked coin for 7420 yuan. He was about to hand over the other, intact coin, but then suddenly changed his mind and silently withdrew his hand.
He suddenly didn't want to sell it anymore. It was proof of his and Xia Li's time in another world, and he wanted to keep it as a memento.
Stepping out of the store, the cold winter wind hit her in the face. Xia Li was still waiting in the same spot, but now she was tilting her head, her gaze passing over the shop window, locking onto a certain item displayed inside.
His Highness's bottom line is crumbling.
"Song Che, I have an idea..."
"Everything inside has an owner. If you want it, you can only buy it. Stealing it and reselling it is impossible."
"...I'm just taking a look."
"That would be best." Song Che glanced at the balance on his phone, put the phone back in his pocket, and softened his tone. "Actually... you can wait for me at home. It's quite cold outside, and sometimes I'll be back very quickly."
"..." Xia Li didn't say anything.
Just then, a couple walked past them, chatting and laughing. The girl was wearing a short skirt and sheer, skin-colored stockings that looked particularly eye-catching on the winter street.
Xia Li's gaze shifted to Song Che's chest, and she murmured in confusion, "So long, so white, I really want to touch it?"
"Don't just blurt out what's on someone's mind!" Song Che's ears burned, and he hurriedly stopped him.
"You want me to wear that?" Xia Li felt a strange sensation. "Those are stockings. Wearing them now will make me feel very cold."
“Those are leg warmers, they’re actually quite thick.” Song Che paused. “You’ll look pretty good in them.”
"You want to touch it?" Xia Li asked directly.
"I didn't say that!" Song Che denied it outright.
"You said it in your heart."
Damn it, are all men like this? Song Che didn't believe anyone could be serious and not think about anything. "What you think in your heart doesn't count, so mind your own business."
"You seem... a bit unserious." Xia Li seemed to be thinking, "So you... sometimes think about these things..."
I thought I was the only one who was so strange.
"Don't misunderstand, it's only human nature, please understand." Song Che was speechless. "At least... at least I'm just thinking that even if he's a hypocrite, he's still half a gentleman."
“I understand.” Xia Li nodded, her logic so clear it was almost despair-inducing. “After all, there’s really nothing to touch about legs. If you really want to… you can touch them for a while.”
Xia Li's words made Song Che blush.
But the next second, Song Che suddenly became serious, "No. I don't want to touch your legs... I want to hold your hand for a while, is that okay?"
"No." Xia Li refused decisively.
"why?"
“I noticed last time that you wanted to warm your hands with mine, and you’re strong now, so it would hurt if you held them.” Xia Li paused, hearing Song Che’s thoughts, “So it’s the same as touching your leg. Well, when your hands are warmer, I can hold yours for a while. Besides, my hands are cold right now, and they’ll freeze you.”
Xia Li put her hands in her pockets to warm them; she didn't understand what was so interesting about touching her hands.
Song Che also put it in his pocket, "Wait until I buy two hand warmers..."
……
Xia Li held a pink cube and examined it carefully. "Is it heated by electricity, or by friction?"
"Wow, you can learn so much from reading magazines, but none of it is true." Song Che took his hand warmer and shook it vigorously a few times to speed up the heating process. "These hand warmers mainly contain a mixture of iron powder, activated carbon, salt, and the like... releasing heat through an oxidation reaction..."
Halfway through his explanation, he realized these terms were too unfamiliar to Xia Li, so he changed his approach: "Like burning firewood, you feel warmth, right? That's also a type of oxidation reaction..."
"I understand the principle, but I don't understand why it's like this," Xia Li said honestly.
To her, a bunch of still powder mixed together could generate continuous heat, which was completely contrary to the spell concept required for burning magic.
However, she didn't dwell on it. Over the past few days, she had gradually come to accept that science was another way to explain and transform reality. Although it contradicted the concept of magic, it brought tangible convenience. People are always curious about things they can't understand before trying to accept them.
The hand warmer quickly became warm.
Xia Li kept her promise, took her warm right hand out of her pocket, and handed it to Song Che.
Song Che grasped it, then put both his hand and his own hand into his coat pocket.
"Is this... a little warmer?" he asked, feeling Xia Li's warmth in his palm.
"Hmm." Xia Li paused, then suddenly read out each word carefully: "Your hands are so small and soft, you smell so good... Are you talking about me?"
"I told you not to blurt out what other people are thinking!" Song Che said helplessly. "It was just a normal feeling, but after you said that, it makes me sound like a weirdo..."
Xia Li hesitated for a moment, then said honestly, "I always felt... that it wasn't quite normal to begin with."
Her intuition was right. But her slightly dulled senses ultimately led her to believe Song Che. After all, it felt really good to have both hands clasped tightly in the same warm pocket. Like leaning against a fireplace, safe and secure.
After walking for a while, Xia Li suddenly pulled her hand away. "Song Che, your mind is in turmoil. I can't hear what you're saying."
"Oh, really?" Song Che then realized that his heart was beating a little fast. Damn it, Xia Li clearly doesn't understand anything, yet he has so much inner monologue.
The two continued walking side by side, their pace slow, as if they were strolling aimlessly. There was a Mixue Ice Cream shop at the corner of the street, with a few people queuing in front of it.
"I'm going to buy a milk tea." Song Che seemed to have found an excuse to escape the scene and walked quickly towards the small shop.
Xia Li remained where she was, silently processing the fragments of information she had heard from Song Che. She knew that what was in one's heart was often the most genuine thought. But once the other person knew what was in their heart, would the person who spoke it still be as honest as before?
Song Che felt strange, constantly wanting to touch her leg, hold her hand, or pat her head. Xia Li didn't understand what was so interesting about touching these things; she thought it would be more practical to eat another bun.
Besides these, words like "no money," "studying," and "liking" kept popping into his mind, but every time these words appeared, he would start rambling incoherently, leaving Xia Li unsure of his true meaning.
A short while later, Song Che returned carrying two cups of milk tea. He inserted a straw into one cup and handed it to Xia Li, while he took the other cup for himself.
"Try it, it's sweet."
Xia Li held the milk tea in both hands and took a sip.
"It's delicious," she commented, taking another big gulp.
The two continued walking forward.
After walking for nearly twenty minutes, Song Che suddenly realized that he had really lost his mind.
They had long passed the bus stop where they were supposed to catch the bus. At this pace, they could walk for another ten minutes or so and be almost home.
He handed Xia Li the untouched cup of milk tea he was holding, took the empty cup from her, and threw it into the trash can by the roadside.
There are many shops nearby, but the foot traffic is average. Nowadays, almost everyone shops online and rarely goes to physical stores. Passing by a wedding dress shop, Xia Li stopped and stared blankly at a rather high-end wedding dress.
In the shop window, a beautifully designed wedding dress is displayed on a mannequin. The layers of pure white tulle are stretched to an impressive degree, and the long veil drapes behind the wearer. The overall design incorporates lace and openwork, making the dress appear both dignified and sacred, as well as exceptionally gorgeous.
Xia Li looked up for a while, glanced at the price tag next to her, and then silently turned and left.
After walking a few steps, she couldn't help but ask, "Why don't I see anyone wearing clothes like this on the street?"
“Oh, this is only worn at weddings.” Song Che also looked away and explained, “Your Highness, you really need to experience this world more. I remember the Hit Empire had similar formal attire, right? Two people who love each other and decide to spend their lives together will wear their most formal attire at their wedding to show respect for each other and the ceremony, and also to strive to look their best…”
"What would happen if you got together even though you didn't like each other?" Xia Li asked directly.
“If you don’t like it…” Song Che carefully chose his words, “After marriage, it might be difficult to tolerate each other’s differences, and it’s easy to argue and have conflicts… It will be very troublesome. Of course, this is a bit of an absolute statement, because even people who like each other will inevitably have friction. If you don’t like each other, the difficulties will probably be much greater.”
“…Oh.” Xia Li nodded, her face still showing a look of understanding but not quite. “I don’t understand.”
“I knew you wouldn’t understand.” Song Che smiled, his smile somewhat complicated. “After all, there’s no marriage contract established by the goddess of magic here. Even if people who don’t like each other get married, and there’s infidelity, betrayal, violence, or endless arguments later on… there won’t really be divine power descending from the sky to punish those who are disloyal and irresponsible.”
"That's not good."
“Yes.” Song Che sighed. “If it were my own choice, I might be able to accept it. But if I didn’t even have a choice… I must feel really bad.”
After Song Che finished speaking, he helped Xia Li straighten her crooked scarf. At the same time, he glanced at the wedding dress. Xia Li's figure... was just right to fill out that dress. Just thinking about the silver-haired girl with the veil made him think how beautiful she would look.
Xia Li suddenly handed the milk tea in her hand to Song Che, "There's still half left, you can have it, otherwise I'll drink it all."
After she finished speaking, she wiped the drool off the straw, and seeing that Song Che's expression was not right, she wiped it again.
...It seems impolite to give someone a drink you've already finished; I won't do it next time.
Chapter 47 A tear from Xia Li fell onto Song Che's tear.
As soon as Xia Li entered, she went straight to the bench and sat down, breathing softly. After walking for almost forty minutes, her calves felt noticeably sore and her feet were slightly burning.
"Why aren't you taking the car anymore?" she asked, her voice slightly breathless.
"I forgot... okay, actually I just wanted to hold hands a little longer," Song Che confessed resignedly. He blamed himself for not being able to control the turmoil in his mind; now even lying had become a luxury. Not only would it be ineffective with Xia Li, but if he tried to lie to someone else, the stubborn prince next to him would likely expose him on the spot.
"Oh." Xia Li didn't react much to the answer. She simply closed her eyes, leaned back in her chair, and still held the pink hand warmer in her hand.
Song Che didn't say anything more and turned to look for Bruce and Tao Xiang. He wondered where those two had gone again.
"Bruce!"
"Woof!" came the response from the bedroom, mixed with a soft whimper.
"Brother, help me! It bites! Has it been vaccinated?!" Tao Xiang's panicked voice followed.
Song Che strode towards the bedroom, pushed open the door, and found it a complete mess. Tao Xiang was curled up in the corner of the bed, clutching a pillow and trembling. Bruce, contrary to his usual lazy demeanor, stood at the foot of the bed, his fur slightly bristling, his cat eyes glaring angrily at the intruder.
"Tao Xiang, what did you do to offend Bruce?" Song Che asked, exasperated.
"I... I only ate some of its cat food... and then it scratched me." Tao Xiang held up the back of her hand, which had a faint red mark on it, and she looked distressed. "Will I get rabies?"
"Aren't you a cat yourself? Besides, Bruce has all his vaccinations."
“My sister is a cat, and I am a human…” Tao Xiang emphasized weakly, then hugged the pillow tighter.
"Alright, I'll go talk to Bruce." Although Song Che felt that Tao Xiang was wrong for stealing food, he thought it was just a little bit of cat food, so he would just add more. He went over and picked up Bruce, who was still fuming, and patted his head soothingly before going to add more food for him.
As Song Che walked over to the bag of cat food the pet shopkeeper had given him, a slight smile twitched at the corner of his mouth. The sun outside was becoming increasingly useless; even in broad daylight, seeing what Tao Xiang had done made his vision go black.
Where the hell is my food?
"I...I accidentally...ate a little too much." Tao Xiang had somehow crept up to the door.
“I’m on Bruce’s side this time. You went too far. Why didn’t you leave any? Did the rest just end up in your mouth? Besides, people get sick from eating cat food.” He lowered his head and gently rubbed Bruce’s droopy ears with his fingertips. “Don’t cry, Bruce. I’ll bring you food when I come back tonight. She’s a bad cat, but we won’t follow her example.”
After saying that, he turned to Tao Xiang, pondering how to deal with this greedy and unruly fellow.
Looking at Song Che's expressionless face, Tao Xiang panicked and suddenly knelt down with a thud, her head bowed low: "I'm sorry! Tao Xiang was shameless! You, you spank Tao Xiang! Tao Xiang knows she was wrong!"
"Alright, get up." Song Che was a little helpless, and even began to doubt how old she really was mentally. She dared to steal and eat a whole bag of cat food as soon as she came in, what will she be like in the future? She's not even half as sensible as Bruce.
After Song Che scratched his chin a few times, Bruce let out a comfortable purr, and his previous unhappiness quickly vanished. He jumped onto the small sofa, curled himself into a ball, and prepared to take a nap.
