The hidden power of the board of directors? Their purpose is unclear, but there's no need to target Caesar in this way.
Other families' secret weapons? It's possible, but that kind of overwhelming power...
Or perhaps it's a dragon itself? A humanoid dragon? But there's a subtle difference in the feeling.
The more I thought about it, the clearer that sense of familiarity became, yet it was shrouded in a thick fog, making it impossible to grasp the key point.
It's as if the answer is right on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't quite put it into words.
"What's wrong?" Caesar's deep voice interrupted her thoughts.
He had opened his eyes at some point and was quietly looking at her.
Nono turned around, walked to the bedside, and naturally picked up an apple and a knife, starting to peel it with smooth movements.
"Nothing. I was just thinking about the clown who injured you."
The blade sliced through the fruit peel, making a soft rustling sound.
“Very strong.” Caesar’s tone was calm, without anger or resentment. “I couldn’t even force him/her to use their true strength. We were not even on the same level.”
"Hmm." Nono nodded and handed him half of the peeled apple. "Did you feel anything special? Besides the strength?"
Caesar took the apple but did not eat it; he pondered for a moment.
"It feels... very strange. I can't understand his/her power system. It's not entirely based on words, nor entirely on physical techniques. It's more like a more primal, more ruthless power of rules. And..."
He paused, recalling the details: "He/She seemed to receive an instruction or a sense of direction at the end, and suddenly stopped and left. Otherwise, I might not have been able to come back alive."
"Instructions?" Nono paused in her apple-peeling motion.
“It’s just a feeling,” Caesar shook his head. “He/she seems completely free, doing whatever he/she wants. But the pause at that moment was abrupt.”
Nono put down the knife, picked up the other half of the apple, took a bite, and chewed, while also processing this information.
That sense of familiarity resurfaced—a powerful, unpredictable, yet constrained entity.
"Take good care of your injuries," Nono said, temporarily suppressing her doubts. Looking at Caesar's pale face, her tone softened. "Don't think too much. If you lost this time, you can win next time. Anyway, you're lucky you didn't die."
These words sound less like words of comfort and more like a timid form of encouragement.
Upon hearing this, Caesar's lips curled into a slight smile. He reached out and grasped Nono's free hand.
My hands were still a little cold from blood loss, but I was gripping them tightly.
"Are you worried about me?"
Nono rolled her eyes at him, but didn't pull her hand back. "Nonsense. If you died, wouldn't I be incredibly bored? I'd have to train the next one, how troublesome."
That's a statement made with absolute certainty.
Caesar chuckled softly, the vibrations in his chest aggravating his wounds, causing him to cough a few times, but his smile only deepened.
"Don't worry, I'll try my best to stay alive so as not to cause you any trouble," he said, stroking Nuonuo's fingers. "But hearing you say that makes me feel like my injuries are half healed."
"Smooth-talking," Nono snorted, her ears turning slightly red. "Looks like the injury wasn't serious enough."
“It was very heavy.” Caesar’s smile faded as he looked at her, his tone becoming serious. “When I collapsed, I was thinking that I hadn’t given you the most perfect wedding yet, which was a bit of a regret.”
Nono's heart skipped a beat, but she forced a calm expression and said, "Who said I wanted to marry you? I didn't agree to that."
"You'll agree. Besides, I've recently come up with a new idea."
"what idea?"
"Perhaps we could have a traditional Chinese wedding in Beijing. With phoenix coronet and embroidered robes, carried by eight palanquin bearers."
Nono was stunned, never expecting Caesar to come up with such an idea.
"You don't have a fever, do you?" Nono even wanted to reach out and touch his forehead. "Were you stunned by the beating? Or is the anesthesia still wearing off?"
“I’m serious,” Caesar said, squeezing her hand. “I think it would be very special, and it would suit you perfectly. Red suits you very well.”
Looking into his serious eyes, Nono suddenly realized that this guy might not be joking.
She imagined herself wearing an elaborate and gorgeous phoenix coronet and embroidered robe, with a red veil on her head, standing next to Caesar, who was dressed in a traditional Chinese wedding gown.
"You, you decide," Nono said, unusually speechless, turning her head away. "Just don't make it look old-fashioned."
That's tacit approval.
"Don't worry, I'll hire the best master craftsman. He'll make you the most beautiful bride."
They chatted for a while longer, mainly Nono ordering Caesar to rest well and complaining about how boring the hospital was and the food.
Before leaving, Nono seemed to remember something and casually asked, "By the way, what's that clown like? Tall or short, fat or thin? Can you tell if he/she is male or female by his/her voice?"
Caesar thought carefully for a moment: "His height was about a head shorter than mine? He was rather slender, but his strength was terrifying. His voice was altered, so his original tone was unrecognizable. His movements were very light and rhythmic, almost like dancing?"
Delicate, light, rhythmic, dance.
These words struck a corner of Nono's mind like fragments, and the fog instantly thinned.
A blurry female figure flashed through her mind.
Could it be someone she knows? Is it possible?
"Okay. You get some rest, I'll come see you later."
Stepping out of the ward and closing the door, Nuonuo leaned against the cold wall and took a deep breath.
Chapter 165 Speculation
After leaving the hospital and getting into the car, Nono didn't start the engine immediately.
There's a constant flow of traffic outside; it's rush hour now.
Nono's mind kept replaying Caesar's description of the clown, as well as the sense of familiarity she had captured while profiling him.
Delicate, light, rhythmic, dance.
These words haunted her like ghosts.
Nono needs an answer, or rather, she needs to find out through the process of elimination whether she is the clown.
I took out my phone, and without hesitation, I found a number and dialed it.
The phone rang a few times before being answered. A clear, slightly languid female voice came from the other end, accompanied by some background noise, as if the person was on the street.
"Hello? Sister Nuonuo? What made you think of calling me? Did you miss me?" It was Xia Mi's voice, as lively and cheerful as ever.
Nono leaned back in her chair, her tone relaxed, "Yeah, I'm just bored. Where are you? Why is it so noisy over there?"
"I'm strolling around Xidan!" Xia Mi raised her voice slightly, drowning out the background noise. "These past few days, a lot of strange foreigners have come to Beijing, I heard they're all explorers and collectors, so I came out of curiosity to take a look. Maybe I'll hear some interesting tidbits! You know, I'm most interested in those ancient and mysterious legends!"
Her reasoning sounded flawless, carrying a touch of gossip and curiosity typical of college students.
"Oh? Did you find anything?" Nono asked, tapping the steering wheel as she followed her words.
"Don't even mention it!" Xia Mi complained. "Those people were incredibly wary, and they spoke gibberish, which I couldn't understand much of. They seemed so mystical, always talking about 'Dragon King,' 'treasure,' and 'ruins.' Sister Nuonuo, do you think they've been watching too many movies?"
"Maybe," Nuonuo replied casually, then changed the subject, "By the way, have you encountered anything strange or met anything unusual these past few days? It seems like things aren't very peaceful in the capital lately."
Xia Mi on the other end of the phone was stunned for a moment.
"Strange things? No, I was just shopping, eating, and watching the fun. Strange people, well, do those foreigners count? Sister Nuonuo, have you heard something? Is there any danger?"
"It's nothing, just asking casually. Be careful of those mixed-race teams, and pay attention to safety," Nono said casually, then added, "Sigh, speaking of which, Caesar was attacked by some madman last night and was badly injured. I just came back from visiting him at the hospital."
"What?! Boss Caesar was attacked? How serious is it? Who did it? Have they been caught?"
His reaction was natural, just like someone who was surprised and angry to hear that a friend had an accident.
“It was pretty serious. They couldn’t catch him; he ran away quickly.” Nono’s tone was emotionless. “A guy wearing a clown mask was ridiculously powerful. He beat Caesar to a pulp.”
"Little... clown mask? Who is that? He's too monstrous! Even someone as powerful as Caesar couldn't beat him?"
“Yes, there are always people more capable than you,” Nuonuo said, her eyes narrowing slightly as she began her true probing, “Speaking of which, Xia Mi, what do you think of Caesar?”
"Boss Caesar?" Xia Mi was taken aback by the abrupt question. After thinking for a moment, she said, "He's great! He's handsome and rich, and most importantly, he's devoted to you, Sister Nuonuo! He's the object of admiration for all the girls in Kassel College! It's just that sometimes he seems a bit too perfect, and there's too much of a distance between us, haha."
The evaluation was very positive and fit her "junior sister" persona.
"Perfect? Maybe," Nono said noncommittally, then posed her second question, "By the way, I remember you mentioned that you have an older brother? Is he in the capital now? How come I've never heard you talk about him in detail?"
There was a full two seconds of silence on the other end of the phone.
"Yes, yes, I do have an older brother," Xia Mi's voice was slightly lower, less lively than before. "He's not in good health and has been recuperating. It's not convenient for him to see people."
"I see. Then I hope he recovers soon." Nono expressed her understanding and made one last tentative move, "Hey, Xia Mi, you have such a good temperament, and your posture is so upright. Did you study dance before?"
This time, the silence on the other end of the phone was longer.
Nono could even faintly hear the sound of the wind in the background and Xia Mi's extremely light breathing.
"Sister Nuonuo, you noticed?" Xia Mi's voice rang out again, with a slightly embarrassed smile. "I did study ballet for a few years in middle school, but I neglected it because I was busy with schoolwork. Now I just practice casually to keep my muscles and bones moving, otherwise my bones would get stiff from sitting and reading all the time."
The reasoning is perfectly logical and explains why it gives the impression of rhythm.
All the tests were defused easily and without leaving a trace.
Every answer seemed honest, natural, logical, and flawless.
Nono's heart sank slowly.
Either she guessed wrong and Xia Mi really had nothing to do with this, or this girl's acting skills and cunning had reached a frightening level.
“Learning to dance is a good thing; it can improve your poise.” Nono finally smiled, as if she was just chatting casually. “Alright, I won’t bother you while you’re shopping. I just wanted to make a call since I was bored. Be careful out there, and don’t go to secluded or deserted places lately.”
"Okay! Thank you for your concern, Sister Nuonuo!" Xia Mi's voice returned to its previous cheerful tone. "By the way, Sister Nuonuo,"
She suddenly asked, with curiosity and anticipation, "When are you and Caesar getting married? We're all looking forward to the wedding! Could you send me an invitation?"
The question arose suddenly, shifting the focus of the conversation from her to Nono and Caesar's marriage.
Nono paused for a moment, then laughed and said, "What's the rush? It's still uncertain. If it really happens, I'll definitely get an invitation from you."
"Then it's a deal! Sister Nuonuo, you must be the most beautiful bride!" Xia Mi said happily.
After chatting for a couple more minutes, Nuonuo hung up the phone.
She put down her phone, looked out the window at the night view of Beijing, and remained silent for a long time.
Xia Mi on the phone acted perfectly normally, even perfectly explaining all her doubts.
The experience of learning ballet explained the rhythm, and the brother's recovery explained the possible connections.
