America: A Prodigy of Stereotypes
Page 226
“Mom will be very sad, won’t she?” Gwen said.
"Wow," Stephanie exclaimed softly.
"Do you know what the best family combination in America is?" Li Qun asked.
"What is it?" Peter asked, somewhat curious.
“It’s a family made up of an Asian father and an African American mother. Children born into this family will have the most responsible father and the most loving mother. Either parent will pour all their love into the family, and there’s no need to worry about either parent cheating,” Li Qun replied.
"Where did you get this from?" Gwen began to doubt Li Qun's sources.
"It's observation from daily life."
“That makes sense,” Peter nodded.
"Really?" Stephanie thought to herself.
"The vast majority of African American mothers raise their children alone after losing their husbands, and even after the law automatically cancels the mother's guardianship when the child turns eighteen, they still care for and help the child's life."
“I know that. Even TV shows portray this stereotype,” Harry said.
"Asian fathers, traditional East Asian culture requires fathers to be responsible for their families, and they also hold themselves to this standard. After becoming fathers, they may appear strict, but they are always thinking about their children's future."
“It’s a standard stereotype, and it’s been around for thousands of years,” Li Qun said.
“Liqun, judging from your usual behavior, I think this stereotype will continue,” Gwen said meaningfully.
Chapter 193 My Home Ground
A basic legal fact that every American teenager knows is that once a person turns eighteen, their parents' guardianship and support obligations automatically end.
Unless the parent is disabled or has special circumstances that prevent them from taking care of themselves, the court may order the parents to extend their guardianship and support obligations indefinitely.
Even after adulthood, children are not entitled to freely enter and leave their parents' house. If children insist on returning home, it may constitute illegal intrusion.
Peter, Gwen, Harry, Stephanie, and Lillian will all go to college, and leaving home at eighteen to live in school dormitories or rent a place nearby is something they will all inevitably experience.
In families with poor familial relationships, the things that might happen to the children as adults will not happen to them.
"I've written down the details of the next match in my phone's notes. The organizers drew lots for me and my opponent, and they got the back alley venue."
Peter was peeking at his phone under the table. Midtown High School is quite strict about students bringing phones to school.
"Who is your opponent?" Li Qun asked.
“Jered, to put it simply, he’s a boxer,” Peter replied.
"The quarterfinals, the semifinals, you and this Gerald are in the finals for the district championship, right?" Gwen asked with concern.
“The organizers said that to become this year’s champion, you have to fight the previous year’s champion,” Peter replied.
“Oh, the champion from last year, is that the same person?” Gwen said.
"That guy from last year? You know him?" Harry asked, and Stephanie also looked at him curiously.
“His name is Goro Miyagi. He and his master own the Miyagi Pizza shop. Last year, after Goro Miyagi won the championship, he got into a fight with Li Qun, but he didn’t win,” Gwen explained.
“Is that so?” Harry laughed, turning to look at Li Qun.
“Peter, are you under a lot of pressure? You don’t seem to have ever beaten Liqun,” Harry said to Peter.
“Peter can definitely beat Goro Miyagi,” Li Qun said.
“Liqun, do you think Goro Miyagi’s karate has improved this past year?” Peter asked.
“He delivers food every day, treating it as a form of spiritual practice. He even dares to go into gang-controlled neighborhoods; his skills haven’t diminished,” Li Qun told Peter.
"Is it Miyagi Pizza? My family and I went there to eat their pizzas when I first moved here."
“What I’m trying to say is, aren’t any Italians causing them trouble?” Stephanie asked.
“They might have contacted them, and it might not have been ordinary Italians, but rather an Italian gang. They resolved the problem quietly,” Li Qun said.
“What kind of pizza do they have? I’ll call and order some this weekend,” Harry said.
"Uncle Norman, do you mind if you eat pizza?" Liqun asked Harry.
“He orders pizza delivery himself and tells me which pizza delivery place is the most authentic,” Harry replied.
“I was really impressed by the tempura pizza and the karaage chicken pizza,” Peter told Harry.
“These pizzas don’t sound respectable,” Harry said.
“It’s precisely because it sounds so strange that their pizzerias have been able to survive in New York,” Li Qun said.
“The last time I had fried noodle pizza at their restaurant was when I had it,” Stephanie said.
"what?"
Li Qun looked at Stephanie in disbelief. What kind of culinary abomination was it to put fried noodles on a pizza?
“There’s also something on the menu…” Stephanie frantically searched for memories from a few months ago.
"besides……"
“If you can’t remember, you don’t need to tell us,” Li Qun said defiantly to Stephanie.
“Okay.” Stephanie smiled.
……
……
Today is Friday, the day Peter and Jared play their game.
After school, Peter left the school alone and rushed to the competition venue early.
The unique aspect of the back alley venue is that spectators watch the game from the rooftops on either side of the alley. The alley is long and narrow, limiting viewing space, and the organizers seem indifferent to the viewing experience of the spectators in the back alley.
The entire alley was the fighting ground for Peter and his rival Gerald. There was only one entrance; the other end of the alley was sealed off with barbed wire. The alley was filled with clutter; the trash cans were bulky, and piles of fresh garbage surrounded them, along with tattered sofas, clothes lying on the ground, and old posters pasted on the brick walls. The stench of urine was the dominant smell in the back alley.
When Peter arrived, he was startled by the audience on both sides of the rooftop; he was almost discovered to be a "mutant Spider-Man."
"Red Spider, take a look at the script. You'll play the robber."
"Why am I a robber?" Peter complained to the organizers, as today's pre-match skit was once again filled with awkward moments.
"Because you're wearing a hood, criminals cover their faces."
Peter felt a little uncomfortable with the organizer's response, but he did not refute it.
Peter glanced at the script, which was only two pages long. The lines in the script were classic, the kind of lines that robbers often said, which he had heard many times when he was out doing his nighttime heroism.
"Hand over the money!"
Don't shout!
No one will come to save you!
"I'm warning you, don't call the police! I know where you live!"
"This is a prop knife, it's made of rubber." An organizer handed Peter the performance prop.
Peter held a rubber knife, which swayed back and forth in his hand. It was limp and couldn't cause any wounds.
Is it okay now?
Peter looked up and saw spectators peering out from the rooftop. Li Qun and his group had arrived, and Mr. Walter White's bald head was also looking at him from the rooftop.
"I'm ready."
Peter returned the script to the staff and walked to the alley entrance, ready to begin his awkward acting match with his opponent, Jared.
The performance began in the small theater. Peter vividly and earnestly portrayed his role as a robber, while his rival, Jared, delivered his lines like a robot, devoid of any human emotion. The two actors' performances drew laughter from the audience above them.
Someone threw down banknotes as a reward for Peter and Jared to amuse themselves.
Peter tossed the rubber knife behind his back and said to Jared, "Let's start fighting!"
Gerald was also tired of the awkward performance. He glanced at the referee, then raised his arms and clenched his fists at Peter.
“I have to tell you, this alley is my territory,” Peter said to Jared.
"You were actually a robber?" Gerald squinted at Peter, scrutinizing the man wearing the spiderweb mask.
"No, I was helping the person who was robbed."
“If someone shouts for help, I’ll go over as soon as I hear it,” Peter said.
"Row."
Jared swung his fist at Peter, who dodged it by turning his head.
Peter stepped onto the wall and ran two steps along it, getting behind Gerald. As Gerald was surprised by Peter's agility and turned around, Peter's fist was already aimed at the boxer Gerald.
Peter punched Jared in the cheek, knocking him down.
He won with a single blow, and the unconscious Gerrard was defeated as the referee counted down the seconds.
"One punch! Starscream ended the match with just one punch!"
"He's practically One-Punch Man!" the host shouted into the microphone.
Peter was wearing a mask, so no one could see his expression. Under the mask, Peter couldn't stop laughing as he heard the host's boasting.
Chapter 194 Limited Energy
"Coming today was definitely the right decision."
Walter White took a bite of the hot dog, and Stephanie, Harry, and the others were also eating hot dogs. Walter White was treating them.
“The Queens fighting champion will be decided on Sunday, and the New York City fighting champion will be decided after Thanksgiving,” Harry told Walter White.
“I don’t see Peter. Isn’t he interested in such a great game?” Walter White asked.
"Was it exciting?" Stephanie asked.
“Red Spider’s punch was absolutely beautiful; it felt like it hit me right in the heart,” Walter White said.
“Peter is busy right now,” Li Qun said to Walter White.
“When I was your age, I was also really into chemistry experiments. Was he tinkering with experiments in his garage?” Walter White said, recalling the biochemistry questions Peter had asked him.
Walter White knew that a person's energy was limited, and the contrast between the skilled fighter "Starscream" and the "genius" high school student Peter Parker made it impossible for him to associate "Starscream" with Peter Parker.
