Reincarnated As A Chameleon And Eating Everything To Evolve
Chapter 143 - Rematch With A Bear (1)
Recalling the direction where Nass had pointed before and by following his minimap, Matthew had finally succeeded in finding something that looks very similar to the bear's burrow that belongs to the first bear that he had killed before.
The size and shape of the burrow were relatively the same and he was 100% sure that it was indeed a bear's burrow. Matthew had moved closer towards the burrow and his scanner only detected one presence near him.
However, what made him certain that it was indeed a bear was because his heat sense had projected a hazy red silhouette of a bear inside the burrow. Its body was as big as Matthew had remembered and from the hazy silhouette, Matthew could see that it was currently moving its head up, down, left, and right as if its mouth was busy doing something.
Preparing himself to fight a bear for the second time, Matthew was currently thinking about what method he should use this time to kill the bear that used to be as strong or even stronger than himself from 2 weeks ago.
'Should I wait until it goes to sleep and ȧssassinate it with one strong bite to its neck? Maybe it's too risky… Its sense of hearing is no less than the wolves and getting this close to its burrow is already my limit, I think. If I was caught in that cramped burrow then it would be hard for me to maneuver around and kite that big thing.'
Remembering how strong the bear's paw was, made Matthew think twice about getting stuck together with the bear in a cramped place where can't move and dodge around.
'Or should I just lure him out then ambush him from the top of the trees? I learned my lesson and know that my venom would be useless if it used its aura ability, but if I used the ambush to deal as much damage as possible before it swatted me from its back, then I will gain a large advantage if the battle goes on for a long time.'
Matthew spent another 5 minutes considering the disadvantage and the advantage of each strategy he could come up with. But in the end, he decided to just confront it head-on without using tricks or his venom.
And the reason was,
'I'm not the same as myself from 2 weeks ago. I've unlocked the solid aura and I need to be able to fight in a condition where I'm not relying on my stealth. Just in case my stealth was disabled like last time, I won't be easily suppressed because of my lack of fighting experience. I will get myself used to fighting head-on.'
Matthew still remembered his fight with the human general. Not only he was basically being thrashed around by the general without succeeding in getting through the general's defense even once before the general consumed the strange pill that made his aura berserk and his mind less sharp but Matthew also can't keep up with the general's flurry of attacks even after the general's moves had been more sloppy and less refined.
Matthew had won just because he figured out how to make an aura-blade in the last second and used it to catch the general off-guard and used the opportunity to finish the fight before they exchanged more blows.
He realized that in conclusion, his technique is nonexistent and both of his fighting instinct and experience were not adequate to substitute his lack of fighting technique.
Learning a fighting technique is not something that one can do easily, especially for Matthew who had never learned martial arts before. Besides knowing how to throw simple punches like jabs, hooks, and uppercuts from watching Youcylinder videos while he was bored, he didn't know any other real martial arts.
But he can't just accept that fact and do nothing about it. If learning fighting techniques wasn't possible for him, then he would train his instincts, pile up fighting experience, and evolve even more while adding more animal body parts that could make himself more powerful than before. Basically, he needs to use everything that was available for him to get stronger.
With that resolve in his mind, Matthew turned off the chameleon aura ability, grabbed a twig, and threw it inside the bear's burrow.
—--
Inside the bear's burrow, a bear was currently busy munching on a boar carcass that he had caught earlier in the day.
'I'm only 1 level away from level 25. After I finish my fourth evolution, I will challenge that arrogant guy right away and take his place in the deeper parts of the forest.' The bear thought to himself.
'That guy was only lucky that he reached level 25 earlier than me because those foolish goblins tried to kill him and became his level instead.'
'And he only had to defeat that old man that already had difficulties walking properly to get that spot in the deeper parts of the forest. What else could it be besides that he was lucky! He got a level boost and he only needed to take over the territory of a dying old bear!'
'There's no way that I, who had been constantly hunting and fighting beasts every day, would lose to that lucky bastard.'
'I just need to hunt a few more of these boars before I can level up.' He thought while still munching on the boar's stomach.
'But it would be a shame if I hunt more than I could eat, they taste rather good.'
Moving his head around to get onto the bits and pieces stuck on the boar's bones, the bear was still focused on eating his meal.
'Oh and I wonder how that other guy is doing? He always takes things slow, pretending to be a smart*ss when in truth he was just lazy. The last time we met he was still on level 22. How can he still be at level 22 after this long? Does he even want to move deeper into the forest?'
He was about to move onto another boar, but suddenly, he heard a noise coming from behind him and he quickly turned around.
When he saw that it was a twig that had just fallen into his burrow, the bear kept staring at the twig and then looked at the entrance of his burrow, but he didn't see anything on the entrance of his burrow.
And when he was just about to check outside the burrow, another twig was thrown into the burrow and hit him squarely on his nose. Which was one of the most sėnsɨtɨvė spots other than his eyes.
The huge bear was startled and he reflexively jerked his head up, causing his head to hit the ceiling of the burrow. It didn't cause him any significant damage, but hitting his nose and making him hit his own head at his own home makes the bear furious.
'WHOEVER IT IS, I WILL TEAR THEM APART!'
The bear thought before rushing out of the burrow.
When he finally got out of the burrow, he saw a creature that was only about half as tall as himself, standing still in front of him.
'It was those creatures that lived nearby! I thought I gave them enough lessons not to get too close anymore, but it seems that it wasn't enough!'
Looking at the creature who didn't move an inch forward nor backward even after they were face to face with each other, the bear thought,
'This creature must have been too scared to even lift its claws. Then what is it doing, throwing things into my home?'
'It looked different from the others that I had seen before. He looked rather weird compared to those creatures that were a bad copycat of those cowardly wolves that liked to group up with each other. Maybe it was because of that? He looked different so the others had thrown him away and gave him to me to eat?' The bear thought.
'If that's the case then I will forgive him for annoying me. I will reward him with a quick death. Just be obedient and stay still right there.'
The bear then walked closer towards the weird-looking kobold until he was close enough to slash the creature with his claws.
Seeing the creature was still not moving even after he was right in front of his face, the bear smiled as he thought of a free meal and a slight bonus for his level.
He raised his claw and slashed it towards the creature's head. He had expected the creature's skull to break after his claws made contact with it. And he would peacefully continue eating his lunch that was disturbed mid-way.
However, when his claws were still moving downward, he saw the creature put both of its hands and cross them over each other to protect its own head.
But the bear didn't do anything as he saw this, he just continued his attack while thinking,
'What a useless thing to do, it will only make your death more painful if I can't break your skull in one hit.'
But a hazy white aura soon covered the creature's hands and soon it turned solid as it covered the creature's hands like a glove.
The moment the bear's claws hit the solid white aura, he felt like he just hit a thick tree branch.. But when he could even leave a deep dent in a thick tree branch with a single full-power hit, his claws stopped moving and it wasn't able to go past the solid white aura.
