Margaret smiled with joy and finally opened her eyes until the candle burned out completely.
"I think I have gained a lot. Thank you, Rosalyn." Margaret smiled happily.
044 Margaret's Understanding
As Margaret spoke, she made a gesture, and then a dove made of fire element suddenly appeared. The dove flew around Margaret happily, and then landed obediently in her palm.
"You can create animals with fire?" Russell asked in surprise.
"No, that's not the case, my Lord." Margaret smiled and shook her head. "I'm just using fire to imitate the behavior of animals. I can't really create the miracle of life like you do."
Margaret walked onto the deck with great interest, and used fire to simulate various animals. She also confirmed that they could participate in the battle like summoned creatures - it just required her to take the trouble to control them.
Margaret kept imitating various kinds of birds and enthusiastically introduced them to Russell one by one.
She simulated a variety of birds, including black storks, kestrels, sea eagles, swans, and so on, and made these birds of fire fall all over the deck. All of these birds were under Margaret's precise control, and no fire was caused anywhere.
Then Margaret snapped her fingers, and all the birds of various kinds on the deck suddenly flapped their wings and took off, then crashed violently into the rocks on the shore.
The explosion was crisp, the reefs were shaking under the bombardment, and countless tiny sparks flew all over the sky, like a grand firework being ignited.
As the excitement wore off, Margaret's legs went weak and she fell back into Russell's arms.
"Ha, what a pity! It seems I can't control so many birds at once." Margaret said breathlessly, but there was no regret in her voice.
"It's okay, take your time. You've just started practicing after all," Russell encouraged.
Russell believed that any improvement in combat effectiveness was a good thing. Margaret now possessed a means of long-range attack, which would surely come in handy in the upcoming battle against the Demon Centurion.
Now that Margaret's fighting power has improved, Russell is in a good mood.
Rosalyn was so envious that she closed her eyes and began to meditate.
However, unlike Margaret, Rosaline was not able to cast any spells after finishing her meditation.
"Huh? Why? I'm the mage! Why can't I feel the Eye of Truth, but you can, Margaret?" Rosaline frowned.
Margaret was clearly very interested in this topic. She asked, "I don't think I'm using the Eye of Truth. Rosalyn, what does your Eye of Truth look like? What kind of world do you see with it? How did you cast the spell before?"
"I don't know." Rosalyn continued to shake her head.
"do not know?"
"Yeah, I don't know. Before, I just seemed to be able to see the magic threads of everything, and then I could waver these threads to cast all kinds of spells..." Rosalyn bit her lip in grievance.
Rosalyn felt sad that the spells she usually relied on had suddenly disappeared.
"So, the Eye of Truth is more like a sense organ for you?" Margaret was stunned. "But, the birds I summoned were simulated based on my understanding of them. I didn't see any magic threads you mentioned."
Rosalin and Margaret discussed and analyzed seriously for a long time, and finally determined that what Margaret saw in meditation was also a ball of fire, just like Rosalin, but the "summoning technique" she used was completely different from Rosalin's previous magic system.
Rosaline previously relied more on the Eye of Truth to cast magic. For a wizard with the Eye of Truth, casting a fireball or the magician's hand is as natural as an ordinary person kicking away a small stone on the road. There is no need to understand the principles of magic at all.
Margaret was able to successfully simulate these birds using flames because she had a wealth of knowledge as a naturalist and had a full understanding of these birds.
"I have a way to help you use magic again," Margaret said to Rosalyn.
Rosalyn's eyes immediately lit up: "Huh? Really?"
"Yes, of course it's true. It's just different from the magic you used before. You can no longer rely on the wizard's Eye of Truth. Instead, you must understand everything in the world and then construct spells through meditation." Margaret shared her experience with Rosaline.
"Understand everything in the world? How do I do that?"
Margaret smiled and said, "I have some research notes and organized related materials in the cellar on the top of the mountain. How about we go get them together?"
"Want to leave the boat?" Rosalyn instinctively shrank back, then shook her head. "No, I don't want to get off the boat."
Looking at the way Rosalyn shrank her neck, it seemed that she was very resistant to leaving the boat.
Russell didn't know why Rosalin didn't want to leave the boat, but he persuaded her, "Let's go together, Rosalin. The ship's protective array has been destroyed. It's no longer safe here. We can look after each other."
Although the demons and lost souls on the island were probably killed, Russell was not sure if any strange guys would show up again.
With Russell's insistence, Rosaline was finally persuaded. She timidly reached out and tightly grasped Russell's sleeve, then followed behind him cautiously.
"Don't be so nervous, Rosalyn," Russell persuaded with a smile. "Although there are not many people on this island, we have almost wiped out those demons and lost souls. Next, we need to eliminate the last demon centurion on this island, and then we can leave by boat."
Russell planned to leave the island not only because it was deserted, but more importantly, after killing all the demons, he would have no new demon souls to replenish his fuel.
Therefore, Russell planned to leave on Rosaline's ship after killing the remaining demon centurion.
After Russell explained his plan, Rosalyn's voice sounded a little more relaxed: "Is there really no one on the island?"
Russell nodded, then soothed her, "Yes, but don't be afraid, Margaret and I are here to protect you."
"Yeah!" Rosalyn nodded happily, and then she relaxed completely.
Russell noticed that she was not as tense as before, and her steps were much lighter.
Seeing Rosaline sighing with relief, Russell couldn't imagine that she was a wizard who had the courage to leave home and travel around the world in her own boat to find her father.
Perhaps it was the loss of her magic that had made her feel insecure? I hoped Margaret's solution could quickly resolve Rosalyn's problem.
Russell thought so.
045 Dinner and Plans
There were no accidents on the way back and forth from the cellar to the ship. Margaret returned to the ship with her precious pile of research notes and Russell carried a box of bacon that was half eaten.
Interestingly, Rosalyn was more interested in the fragrant bacon box in Russell's arms than in Margaret's pile of notes that might help her pick up magic again.
On the way back, Russell noticed that Rosaline's eyes were always on the bacon box, and she swallowed secretly several times.
If there is one more mouth to feed, the bacon made by Margaret will probably only last for two or three days.
This means that enough food must be prepared for consumption during ocean voyages.
As for fresh water - there is a vast ocean, and Russell and Margaret can now control fire, so getting some distilled water is not difficult.
Russell thought about food as he carried the bacon crate into the ship's galley.
He turned around and saw Rosaline looking eagerly at him. He chuckled and waved his hand: "Okay, eat if you want."
Rosalyn cheered, then took out a plate and knife and fork, put a large plate of bacon on it, and began to eat it.
Rosalyn ate with great grace, her movements delicate and her chewing very carefully, but the bacon on her plate was being devoured so quickly that Russell couldn't imagine how she did it.
Russell shook his head and left the kitchen with a somewhat amused look on his face. Then he ran into Margaret head-on.
"Why, are you here to eat bacon too?" Russell asked casually.
"My Lord, I actually didn't plan to go back to get the notes today." Margaret seemed to be answering a question that was irrelevant.
"Oh?"
Margaret looked terrified. "But I was looking for dinner in the pantry, and all I found were turnips! That's why I had to get the bacon. I don't want turnips for dinner!"
Thinking of Margaret's complaints about turnips in her diary, Russell understood Margaret's thoughts.
There are always foods that people don’t like.
"How many turnips are there? Can they support us to leave this island and return to the mainland? For example, return to Port Cannos?" Russell asked.
Margaret simply took Russell to the cabin where the food was stored. As soon as the cabin door was opened, a smell of earth hit them in the face.
Looking at the turnips that still filled half the cabin, Russell nodded. "It looks like it's enough for the three of us to eat for half a month. That's more than enough!"
Margaret's face turned grim, and the thought of having to live on turnips made her feel listless.
The thought of eating turnips for the next few days made Margaret feel seasick all over again.
Should I enjoy a good meal of bacon tonight?
Or should I eat less bacon tonight and save some to enjoy every day for the rest of the voyage to ease the psychological trauma caused by the turnip?
Margaret was torn between these two options.
Finally, thinking of having to eat turnips every day for the rest of her life, Margaret decided that she must have a good meal of bacon tonight to make up for the emotional trauma that was about to happen.
Margaret made up her mind and returned to the kitchen.
Margaret then realized that both her options were off. She stared in amazement at Rosalyn, who was happily rubbing her belly and burping.
To be exact, Margaret stared in amazement at the wooden box which originally contained half a box of bacon but was now completely empty.
"You, you finished eating it all?" Margaret's voice trembled and sounded full of loss.
"Hmm! It's delicious. Do you have any more?" Rosalyn gave a thumbs up without hesitation. She seemed very satisfied with the taste of the bacon.
Margaret took a deep breath, but the huge gap between her ideal and reality ultimately made her unable to control her emotions.
Margaret asked loudly, "How on earth did you manage to eat so much bacon? It was supposed to last three people two or three days!"
Rosalyn blinked, seemingly unable to understand Margaret's question.
"What's wrong, Margaret?" Russell heard Margaret's voice suddenly become higher, and quickly opened the door and walked into the kitchen.
Rosalyn smiled and said, "Dad! The bacon is delicious. Do you have any more? I want more!"
"Uh, no, there are no more." Russell was also stunned. He now began to think that the half-warehouse of turnips might not be eaten for a few days.
Rosalyn was visibly disappointed. "Well, okay. Thanks, Dad."
At this time, Rosalyn began to miss her uncle.
Perhaps because she was separated from her mother when she was still a baby, Rosalyn's eating instinct was suppressed as an infant.
This caused Rosalyn to eat and drink unconsciously, and she would always feel hungry. She would stuff herself until she could not eat anymore. She would also eat many meals a day, interspersed with various snacks and refreshments.
The uncle felt very sorry for his poor niece, which might be attributed to his longing for his sister, so he could be said to be doting on her, providing her with almost unlimited amounts of any food she wanted to eat - as an equally powerful magician, it was impossible for the uncle to be eaten out of money by a little girl.
If meditation and practicing magic were not a very exhausting activity, Rosalyn might be considered "slightly overweight".
The atmosphere at dinner was not warm at all. Margaret, feeling lost, gnawed on the turnip with a bitter face, while Rosalin, feeling as if she had gotten into trouble, lowered her head and gnawed the turnip cautiously.
"Pah, this is disgusting." Russell gnawed on the turnip helplessly.
"Okay! There are probably still some animals surviving on this island. Let's go hunt some prey tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, and we'll just make do with what we have to eat today!" Russell encouraged the two ladies.
"What are your plans next, my lord?" Margaret forced a smile.
"Of course, we have to kill that demon centurion first." Russell glanced at Rosaline and continued, "Then we have to get enough food for us to return to the mainland. Next, we have to help Rosaline regain her magic skills, for example, by going to Cannos University. After that, I have to continue hunting these demons."
Russell would not think that his life was too long, especially since his life expectancy was less than ten years. Of course, he would continue to hunt demons.
Of course, Russell also doesn't mind taking some time to visit Margaret's hometown first, and is happy to help Rosaline find her real father.
"I will always follow you, my Lord." Margaret said seriously, "Thank you for the divine magic you have bestowed upon me."
Russell thought Margaret was talking about him resurrecting her.
In fact, Margaret was not referring to that incident. Margaret did not actually regard her spells as magic, but as some kind of divine spell bestowed by Russell.
Margaret secretly decided that she must perform well in the battle with the Demon Centurion tomorrow.
046 Evil Enemy
Although the demon centurion trapped in the acid swamp now looks weak and its roar is no longer as loud as it was in the past few days, its strength is still beyond Russell's imagination.
It was still full of terrifying aura and powerful sense of oppression. Although it had lost the spear in its hand, it still used its two swords to block countless attacks.
The fire animals summoned by Margaret exploded violently on its rough and tough skin, but apart from accelerating the dissipation of the gray fog, they did not seem to cause any substantial damage to it.
Russell, who faced the enemy head-on, was under tremendous pressure. He swung his sword and sparks flew, but he was still at a disadvantage due to its brutal strength and ferocious attack.
Fortunately, this demon centurion was completely trapped in the acid swamp. Russell could get a chance to catch his breath by moving out of its attack range when he was temporarily defeated.
However, this loophole can only be exploited once. Although the Demon Centurion fell into an irrational rage, he still possessed an excellent fighting sense honed through countless battles.
When Russell wanted to retreat for the second time because he could not hold on, the Demon Centurion subconsciously increased the speed of swinging the weapon in his hand. The airtight attack forced Russell to have no spare strength to retreat, thus tightly entangled Russell.
The Demon Centurion stubbornly refused to reduce its offensive even though the anxious Margaret conjured up all kinds of birds, even endless birds, to bombard it.
Russell felt that he could not retreat any further. If he retreated again this time, he was not sure if he would have the courage to stand in front of this huge monster that still seemed unshakable.
Russell gritted his teeth and struggled to resist the attack of the Demon Centurion, sweating profusely as he tried to resolve its violent attack.
Gradually, Russell no longer mechanically displayed Margaret's family swordsmanship in his attacks. Instead, he began to integrate this set of swordsmanship into actual combat and turned it into something he actually mastered.
Russell gradually began to feel more comfortable.
Somehow, Russell remembered what his singles coach, who was once a half-national player, said to him during a casual chat with the coach in his previous life when he joined a table tennis class out of curiosity.
