Lucius whistled, then walked back briskly with the food on his shoulder.
He could already imagine the surprise of the two children and Grace when they saw this thing. It looked very delicate, but it was not so precious in the past. But now, in addition to filling the stomach, anything that could bring enjoyment to the taste buds was undoubtedly a luxury.
Even basic foods are slowly moving in this direction.
The kids will be very happy.
Grace would do it too, they hadn't done it in a long time, to save energy.
Lucius thought about it, and the regret and self-blame he felt for the rotten fruit disappeared in an instant. He expected that his family would have a happy dinner tonight, and he and Grace could find some time to be alone, hug her, cling to each other, kiss her, and then...
A foot kicked him on the back.
Lucius fell to the ground, dust flew all over his face. Before he could feel any surprise, anger or uneasiness, two strong arms pinned him to the ground, making it impossible for him to get up.
The warehouse manager shook his head, walked up to him, picked up the bag that had fallen to the ground, and untied the rope in front of Lucius.
"What are you doing! Myrmidia!"
He was furious and shouted angrily.
"Put it down! I told you to put it down!"
The warehouse manager untied the bag, took out the things bit by bit and piled them on the ground. Lucius watched helplessly as a piece of fresh meat was placed on the ground, covered with mud and became dirty.
"Asshole! Put it down!"
Fire was gushing from his eyes and throat, but the warehouse guard held him down and pressed his knee against his waist.
Finally, the warehouse manager found the bottle of exquisite caviar, shook it in front of Lucius seductively, then stood up and returned to the warehouse.
Quickly, he took out a loaf of bread, placed it on top of the Lucius family's rations, pointed with his index finger, patted his trousers, and went back to the warehouse to continue doing something unknown.
The guards quickly let go of Lucius and returned to stand guard outside the warehouse, but they kept their eyes on him and held their spears in their hands, and if the man tried to do anything, they would undoubtedly impale him.
The man didn't say anything else. He lay on the ground for a while, then stood up silently. Without even wiping the dirt off his face, he carefully put the food on the ground back into the bag and left.
He gently blew away the dust and sand on the surface of the food, put them away, tied the bag again, then turned his head to look at the warehouse. His face was dirty and expressionless. The guards were staring at him.
The man turned and headed towards home.
......
Fresh meat is not easy to store and it gets dirty, so it needs to be disposed of as soon as possible. Grace went to get water to wash it. The two children sensibly helped their father to clean up, organize the ingredients, help him change into clean clothes, and wipe his sweat.
Joel limped over and sat down on the tree stump next to Lucius.
"Any news from the kingdom? How's it going today?"
He asked, and then saw the stains and scratches on Lucius' face, which were obviously not caused by logging, and frowned, "What happened?"
Lucius shook his head.
"that's it."
He didn't want to transfer too much negative emotions to his family.
Joel sighed, looked at the bag, and said nothing more.
The atmosphere was filled with melancholy and depression, and at the same time, more people and more families were experiencing the same situation.
......
Lucius finished his meal and walked out of his temporary home, a wooden house covered with a waterproof sheet. The gathering point was sparsely populated and there was little movement among the people.
Most people are accustomed to lying down after eating to save energy and avoid consumption.
The bonfire was still lit, and the guards gathered in groups of three or four at this time, nominally on alert but actually relaxed.
Lucius hesitated, not knowing whether it was a good thing or a bad thing for the quartermaster Harold to ask him to go, but considering that he would probably offend the other party if he didn't go, he gritted his teeth, put the bag of money that had entered this vast forest with him and his family and was now useless, and rushed to Harold's house.
He didn't walk far before he found Harold's house, a wooden house that looked a little more sturdy and beautiful than Lucius's simple cottage. He knocked on the door and was nervous outside.
The window was pushed open, and a young man's face appeared there. He looked around and whispered:
"Father asked you to go to the sentry post to find him."
Then he closed the wooden window.
Lucius scratched his head, feeling confused, and couldn't help but become a little more alert.
This was a lesson he learned in the military.
So he walked out of the gathering point again. The sentry post was in the wild, and he didn't know why the quartermaster wanted to see him there.
Soon, we arrived at the destination.
He saw several guards talking to each other, laughing and chatting, and most importantly—they had food and drinks!
Lucius was filled with envy.
The cups in their hands must be filled with beer!
The man seemed to be able to smell the odor. Looking at the yellow liquid splashing out in the collision, he couldn't help licking his dry lips and walked towards the guards.
"stop!"
The guards reacted violently and suddenly grabbed their spears and pointed them at him. Lucius was confused; these people had already seen him, so why did they suddenly react so strongly?
"Hey! It's me, Lucius Corrence. Harold sent me here."
He held up his hands in a gesture.
A voice came from the sentry post. This sentry post was more complete and beautiful than all the other strongholds. It looked almost like a small villa.
Lucius could only see the shadows inside through the light.
The guards let him pass, but for some reason he felt that two people were staring at him unkindly, with provocation and mockery evident in their words.
Maybe it's an illusion?
He had no recollection of dealing with these people.
Just as he reached the door, it opened and a woman came out hurriedly with her long hair loose. She glanced at Lucius and wrapped her coat tightly around her body.
Her chest was bulging, and Lucius intuitively felt that it was not a breast but something else stuffed in it.
The woman's face flushed slightly as she brushed past Lucius and hurried back to the camp. The guards whistled at her, causing her to quicken her pace.
Lucius smelled a foul odor and quickly reacted, pushing the door open.
Harold, the logistic officer, was slumped on a sofa, his clothes a little disheveled, his lining thrown on the floor.
His face was ruddy, and it seemed that something had really happened in this sentry post just now.
Lucius controlled himself and walked over, trying to be as respectful as possible, "Mr. Harold, I'm here."
The man patted the sofa and motioned for him to sit over there.
Chapter 123: Feast of Insects
When Lucius's butt touched that thing, he even felt as if he was dreaming.
A sofa made of leather, which must be stuffed with cotton and fluff, would be considered fine furniture even in the civilized world of the past.
He never thought that he would find himself sitting on this creation of civilized society again in this forest.
"any drinks?"
Harold stood up, opened a cabinet, and asked without looking up.
Everything in the sentry post made Lucius a little dazed. He subconsciously said politely, "Thank you, but no thanks." He quickly came to his senses and felt regretful. However, Harold still took a bottle of wine whose details could not be seen, picked up a glass that had rolled to the ground, put it together with the wine glasses on the table, and filled them with yellow liquid one by one.
He swallowed and quickly took it from Harold.
The supply officer sat on another chair, his short and fat body sank into it, he raised his glass to him, and the two of them drank from each other across the air.
Lucius took a sip carefully, suppressing his desire for more, and carefully felt the taste of beer spreading in his mouth.
Harold smiled and took the initiative to speak:
"I've looked for you before, Lucius."
Lucius immediately understood that today's main business had arrived.
He put down the wine glass with some reluctance and placed it on the table.
"Yes, I explained, Mr. Harold, I wanted to be with my family."
The logistics officer frowned and opened his coat, exposing his hairy chest.
"And then what? Let them starve?"
"The situation is so difficult now..." Lucius suddenly stopped, he felt something was wrong.
"To be honest, Lucius, I appreciate your ability. You are a useful person." The supply officer came over and sat down next to Lucius again. "You shouldn't be mediocre like most people, busy and meaningless just to have a bite to eat."
"Try to get out, you are a warrior! The bravest phalanx among the Estalia!" The quartermaster's voice suddenly became louder, and he slapped his thigh to encourage Lucius.
"You deserve more and a better life!"
Lucius was silent for a while. After a while, he spoke with difficulty under the gaze of the supply officer: "I don't know, sir. I don't know what else I can do."
Harold laughed, raised Lucius's glass to him, then filled his own glass, clinked glasses with him, and drank it in one gulp. The wine flowed from his chin to his chest hair, which made Lucius feel particularly distressed. Harold wiped it off nonchalantly.
"Follow me!"
Lucius sighed in embarrassment, "But I don't want to be a soldier anymore."
Harold was a little dissatisfied, and he slammed his empty wine glass heavily on the table.
"I told you to join me! Join me! Got it, join me!"
He stood up and felt the room was a little stuffy, so he walked to the side and pushed open the wooden window, then leaned one hand on the window and looked back at Lucius.
"To be frank, you will pledge allegiance to me and become my subordinate. Now, immediately, you can take away ten days' worth of food. I will give you a note to go to the warehouse manager, and he will know what to do."
Lucius clenched his fists when the warehouse was mentioned. He had silently endured the previous humiliation.
"Isn't there a big shortage of food now?" He still grasped the key point and asked: "If we take away the food like this, will...?"
"Haha." Harold sneered and said without any worries:
"What do you think? Lucius, the warehouse, the guards, the managers, they are all my people, what do you think!?"
"at this place!"
He spread his hands, raised his head, closed his eyes, and exuded an exaggerated arrogance that Lucius found ridiculous, as if he was watching a circus clown performance.
"I named it the Kingdom of Harold Bull Skarnis!"
For a moment Lucius thought the supply officer was drunk.
"I'm in control of everything here! Everything, you understand!"
He suddenly walked over, pressed Lucius, who wanted to get up, onto the sofa, then took a few steps back and slumped back into his chair.
"Now I decide who can eat, then I decide who can't eat, and finally - the lives of more than 1,500 people here, from birth to death, are all controlled in my hands!"
"I'm the king here!"
Harold was shouting like a madman, but the guards outside seemed not to hear him.
If Lucius was very excited before, now he just wanted to leave as soon as possible. He thought the logistics officer was either drunk or crazy, and all this was too exaggerated.
Harold suddenly raised his hand and said to him in a teasing tone: "Hey, Lucius, do you know how many women I have slept with during this period of time?"
He raised an eyebrow at Lucius and pointed his finger at the fine sofa where Lucius was sitting.
"Twenty! The one who just left is the twentieth!"
"They are all healthy, beautiful women, wives, mothers, virgins, haha, hahaha!"
The supplies officer raised his head with a dazed look.
"If I starve them, they will come to me, beg me, and accept my conditions...to serve Harold!"
"Soon, I'll be able to make them do even more. They'll be my mistresses, and their men will have to work for me!"
"I plan to find another eighty to one hundred mistresses, and select the best women from among them to be my wives and concubines, so that they can give birth to excellent children for me and inherit my kingdom!"
“You are so…”
Lucius didn't want to listen anymore. The shameless words of the logistics officer made him feel deeply absurd. He took a sip of the remaining beer in the glass and was about to leave.
"Let's go! Lucius, let's go! Go!"
