The outcome was mixed. It's true that the Zeon forces suffered heavy losses, but the Earth Federation Army and the guerrillas were also full of complaints. These guys in the sky really don't value their lives! The two sides are currently at odds! Who can stand it when an FAB500 falls from the sky?
There's no way around it; friendly fire during air raids is a tradition, and you have to experience it.
"Yes." Rachel nodded with a smile. To put it simply, Ye Yun's fighting style was to hold the front line, advance slowly, and then stab the vital blood supply arteries in the rear.
"The latest Zeon interrogation confession." A little girl rushed into Ye Yun's office, holding up a letter and handing it to him, but her eyes were already fixed on the cake on Ye Yun's desk.
"Oh! Thank you very much, have some, the logistics department just baked it today." Ye Yun smiled and gestured for Qiqi to help herself. The cake wasn't made by anyone else, but by Rita's mother. They were earning such high salaries, but doing nothing made them uneasy, so Ye Yun arranged for a large oven to be provided for the three families to bake cakes, pizzas, and cookies, which were then distributed to the officers' upscale restaurant and to the soldiers returning from duty.
It must be said that, besides sex, alcohol, and cigarettes, the best comfort for soldiers on the front lines was sweets. Freshly baked sweets, which were distributed as special rations due to limited production, were very popular. Eventually, a standard palm-sized butter cake (without cream) could be exchanged for a pack of cigarettes at the base, almost becoming hard currency.
After Ye Yun finished reading the documents in his hand, he handed them to Nores, who was standing next to him. "It seems that the Zeon troops at the front are having a tough time."
"One can of beans per week, one compressed biscuit per day (about 120 grams), two water purification tablets, no meat rations, no cigarettes, no sugar..." Ye Yun looked at the food situation of the enemy soldiers obtained by the guerrillas after interrogating them according to his requirements. It was not a top secret, but it could reflect the enemy's logistical supply status very well. Ye Yun narrowed his eyes, "It looks like the front-line troops can try to make a breakthrough."
Ye Yun pointed to a valley and said, "Mobilize troops outside the defense line in this valley, have the air force conduct concentrated bombing, mobilize long-range fire support units, and prepare for a forced breakthrough."
"With such obvious preparations, the enemy will definitely be on guard." Nores looked at Ye Yun with some doubt in his eyes. The Zeon army, which still has some operational capabilities in this area, couldn't possibly be unaware of such a high-profile preparation. After the sudden loss of the battle, it would not be an easy task to attack the plateau.
"Because they never intended to fight their way up from this valley." Ye Yun reached out and poked at several valley entrances on the map. "It's been almost half a month, and the supplies the Zeon army has lost here are almost enough to re-arm them. With their airdrops being intercepted on a large scale by the air force, how many resources can they spare to support the war?"
As he spoke, Ye Yun squinted, "According to the Air Force's reports over the past three days, they haven't encountered any enemy air interception for at least a week, and ground-based air defenses have also rarely engaged them." Ye Yun smiled, "Our MS unit's airborne combat training is also nearing completion."
"Planning to directly airdrop into the enemy's base?" Nores nodded silently, somewhat approving. A large-scale troop buildup, mobilizing Zeon forces for defense, followed by a direct airdrop to bypass the enemy's defenses and launch a lightning strike on their rear base—the operational plan was reasonable.
"No..." Ye Yun shrugged. "I plan to wipe out their manpower. The mission of the airdropped troops is to attack from both sides. As for the mining cities, let the air force bomb them. It would be best if they came out, but if they don't, there's no need for us to rush in. Battlefield command will be carried out according to the changes in the battle situation." Ye Yun turned around and looked at the staff officers in the command post who were looking at each other somewhat blankly, and also somewhat excited, as they listened to his explanation.
"Congratulations everyone, we're working overtime today!"
Chapter 41 Congratulations, you've been captured!
"Huff... Huff..." A small squad of Zeon soldiers ran wildly through the jungle, as if some unknown demon was chasing them from behind.
"Boom..." The demon's low groan arrived as promised...
"Boom!"
The explosion sent flames soaring up, and the dozen or so men were instantly torn apart and fell to the ground. Recently, the small mine ambush zones that seemed to grow on their own in the jungle (the guerrillas laid them out in front of the enemy and equipped them with 72-hour self-destruct mechanisms) have become a nightmare for all the Zeon soldiers operating in this area!
Especially these Claymore mines, deliberately with reduced explosive charges, were planted by guerrillas in the jungle with the aim of crippling one or two enemies if they didn't kill them. The effect of these things is almost immediate, and they are now undoubtedly the most hated Federation weapon by the Zeon army. In fact, the hatred for these things is even greater than that for the Federation army's GAT-01 short swords, which the Federation army is increasing its investment in.
"Ah..." The expected screams rang out, and this time, for the Zeon soldiers, something even more desperate happened. The wounded Zeon soldier was none other than their last remaining medic! And to make matters worse, he had lost a leg in the explosion!
"..." The Zeon officer licked his lips. Even though he was in the damp rainforest, he didn't know why his lips felt dry, especially given the situation before him. He didn't know what to say.
Abandoning their teammates?
This is a medic; it's safe to say that without him, their chances of escaping the rainforest would have been at least halved.
But not abandoning this teammate?
Heh... Behind them were the guerrillas, their eyes bloodshot with rage, who were being chased by the resources provided by the Federation Army! Their combat vehicles were destroyed by these shameless bastards in various ways, and their accompanying MS units were attacked by Federation Army patrol MS units summoned by the enemy's signal flares, leaving them basically paralyzed in this rainforest.
Yes, those damned Federation MS aren't even trying to destroy the Zeon MS in this kind of combat situation; they're more interested in wounding them. This kind of fighting style is disgusting to the Zeon soldiers.
Because in a sense, this is a variation of sniper tactics.
The Earth Federation's mobile suit units damaged Zeon's mobile suits. Whether you repair them or not, it's impossible to perform repairs locally! They have to be towed back! And in the jungle without good roads, large transport vehicles can't get in! The only vehicles you can bring in are Zaku tanks or some large tracked repair vehicles! So… these poorly mobile vehicles are practically the perfect targets compared to mobile suits!
A certain individual from the 11th MS Squad, using similar tactics, racked up kills on four Zaku tanks, earning himself the title of ace pilot! After receiving a commendation from the Federation Forces, a rank promotion, and a kiss from a barmaid, well…
Why bother promoting it with a tactics manual?
Self-taught!
Therefore, the Zeon soldiers are in despair. The Zeon mobile suits, which were originally supposed to be Zeon's powerful offensive weapons, the Cyclops Zaku, have been repeatedly damaged by the Federation forces' various underhanded tactics, to the point that their attacking units can no longer receive support from mobile suit units.
If it weren't for the fact that the Zeon mobile suits generally achieved decent results in every battle, these Zeon soldiers might have truly lost faith in their own mobile suits.
"Let's go... those guerrilla bastards are right behind us, you guys take me with you! We can't get away!" After silently stopping the bleeding from his wound with the help of his teammates, the medic decisively took off a backpack, took out a painkiller, and handed the rest to his teammates! "Let's hurry, the guerrillas must have heard the explosion! They should be here soon."
"..." The captain of Zeon gritted his teeth, put the medical kit around his neck, and then shoved his pistol into the hand of the medic in front of him. He couldn't do anything else. Giving the pistol to the medic was just to spare him from so much pain before he was captured.
According to previous rumors, Zeon soldiers captured by guerrillas would be tortured to death in order to extract all relevant information about the Zeon army from them.
"Let's go!" The squad leader nodded, stood up and ran forward. The remaining squad members all lowered their heads, too ashamed to look at the medic.
The squad quickly disappeared from the medic's sight. The medic took a deep breath and collapsed onto the damp soil behind him. For some reason, at that moment, he suddenly felt a complete peace in his heart. The tension and fear of being surrounded by the flames of war suddenly left him.
Picking up his submachine gun and checking the ammunition, the medic took a deep breath. He no longer believed he could make it out of the jungle. Only one question remained: He didn't want to die in the jaws of wild beasts, becoming their easy prey! He wanted to at least prolong his life before he died…
"Click!" The gun barrel was pressed against the back of his head. In an instant, all his determination and will vanished, and the courage he had finally mustered disappeared.
"I caught one alive, the footprints are still fresh, those space guys haven't gone far!" Kiki's clear voice rang out in his back. "Hey, hands up!" The medic obediently dropped his gun.
"They ran towards the trap's defensive line. I don't want to go that way." A male voice rang out not far behind. The medic turned around slightly. Ah, it was a Federation soldier. Judging from his uniform, he was a Federation scout. The man walked over, gave him a quick check of his condition, and ripped off the medic's dog tag. "Ordinary soldier. Oh, a medic. You've injured your foot, but it can be treated. You're good enough to stay in the village as a doctor."
"Oh~ that sounds pretty good." Kiki said with a grin. In keeping with the guerrillas' attitude of not keeping idle people, many Zeon prisoners were thrown into the village to farm, build roads, and even repair some transport vehicles that could still be salvaged after being towed back by the guerrillas.
"Federal Army dogs!" The medic glared defiantly at the Federal Army scout behind him.
"Ha, you brainwashed idiots..." The scout didn't hold back, wiping out most of the dissenters with a single blow of his rifle butt. Still not convinced? He'd do it again. "You talk like you can actually benefit from the independence of Side 3. You're like a 007 with the mind of an 857! Today, thanks to your efforts, Gihren has crammed tens of millions more into the colony and dropped them down!"
Soldiers usually have a sweet tongue.
"Hey!" Kiki glared at him, but their attention was almost immediately drawn to an explosion coming from not far away.
"I can tell it's a broadsword and a series of booby traps. Did you add something near the broadswords we planted?" The scout picked at his ear, glancing at Qiqi beside him. He kept his distance from these guerrillas' ingenious ideas and fearless spirit. Their commander was truly interesting; he had simply used money and supplies to win them over from the start. Otherwise, just imagining himself having to fight these guerrillas in the jungle during the operation made his scalp tingle.
"Isn't this standard procedure? Why use a gun when a landmine can solve it? Alright, take him back. He's a medic. Your son's cold won't have to wait for the Federal Army's medic to arrive. We'll have a resident doctor in our village from now on. By the way, what's your name?" Kiki was clearly in a good mood about finding a skilled soldier and told the guerrillas to take the man back.
“William…” The medic was a little confused. How did he become a guerrilla medic? He didn’t seem to have agreed yet. He suddenly felt a dryness in his throat because the gunshots and shouts from not far away only lasted for a brief moment. Without a doubt, this situation meant only one thing.
Just as the Federation scouts had said, his infiltration squad had stepped into the ambush prepared by the enemy. After being wounded again by landmines, this time, the guerrillas and Federation scouts attacked without hesitation! After a short and intense burst of gunfire, no one would survive.
"So don't think you're the first one to step on a landmine. You're actually pretty lucky. Don't look so gloomy. The first mechanic captured on your side has already gotten married in his village..." The Federal Army scout said with a grin, trying to stab the other in the heart.
"Well, his wife is a bit older, so she gets a bit tanned from working all day, and she has a child to take care of. But he's not doing too badly. Our colonel gave him a wooden house, a jeep, bought him a piece of riverbank land from the village chief (Kiki's dad), and even got him a dozen sheep. He's living a very comfortable life now, much better than working for that bastard Zabi's family. At least he doesn't only get one meal a day, and they even have meat with every meal." The scout's last sentence was clearly sarcastic.
"..." The medic's face was utterly speechless. He genuinely didn't know what to say. Had the Federation forces gone mad? What did they mean by "good luck"? Look at my leg! He'd probably be lame for the rest of his life! And you're telling me I'm lucky?!
"There's no air tax on Earth (Note 1), nor as many additional taxes as in space colonies. And most likely, if you just want to live a normal life, there might be some pretty good girls in the village who would be interested in you as a doctor." The scout laughed smugly. The Federation troops had been in the village much longer than the Zeons, and had caused far more trouble. With even the military police falling, Ye Yun could only deduct all their war pay, but these soldiers went off to collect their duty allowances with smiles on their faces.
"Looks like there's no movement. Let's go, go check ahead, take him back, and make sure the medicine is available in the federal store anyway."
"go!"
Chapter 42 Woodland Strangulation
"Federal dogs!" came a Zeon soldier's loud curse. The dangers of the jungle never discriminate between the Federation forces and the guerrillas. If the Federation forces and the guerrillas can exploit it, then the Zeon forces can exploit it too.
A barrage of bullets swept across the few roads in the woodland, and several rockets plunged into the armored vehicles and trucks at the front of the convoy. However, the Zeon forces' plan to directly attack the convoy failed.
The moment the convoy was attacked, the federal troops immediately fired more than a dozen smoke grenades into the woodlands on both sides of the road, prioritizing blocking visibility over everything else! Visibility was already poor in the woodlands, and after firing more than a dozen smoke grenades, it was practically impossible to see anything at all.
Although this would inevitably affect the actions of the Federation forces, at least in this dangerous situation, the Federation forces wouldn't be heading straight for hell amidst sparks and lightning! As for the convoy reversing and leaving, the Federation soldiers had already learned very well from the fighting that doing so would have a very different outcome.
"Take cover!" A federal sergeant kicked open the truck bed, and the soldiers jumped out and hid in the bushes on both sides of the road. At the same time, the sergeant took out a signal gun and fired orange-red signal flares into the air.
Without even asking, in this location where an attack is taking place, even without the interference of Mie particles, long-distance radio communication would definitely be ruined. Therefore, the only reliable alarm device left is the rather primitive method of signal flares.
The Zeon forces weren't stupid either. They had no intention of lingering in this ambush so close to the Federation front. Even with the smoke screen obscuring their vision, it didn't stop the Zeon soldiers from bombarding the approximate location of the convoy below with machine guns, small-caliber grenades, and anti-tank rocket launchers, while simultaneously throwing grenades. Even if they couldn't see clearly, they couldn't give the Federation forces a safe and concealed opportunity to counterattack.
Naturally, the Zeon forces could fire blindly, and the Federation forces would retaliate based on the approximate direction of the gunfire and the approximate location of the muzzle flashes in the smoke! For a moment, the dense gunfire echoed throughout the forest, and bullets and various explosives shuttled back and forth between the trees and the smoke.
"Thump!" Another anti-tank rocket crashed into a truck loaded with supplies. This time, the Federation forces were not so lucky. The truck was carrying ammunition. The violent explosion created a terrifying shockwave that blew Federation soldiers fighting nearby away. When they hit the ground, they coughed up blood and were lifeless.
"Prepare to retreat..." A Zeon lieutenant, sweating profusely, glanced at his watch. Their attack seemed to be going smoothly; the Federation transport convoy was almost completely overwhelmed. The lieutenant himself was quite certain that if the attack could maintain this intensity for a little longer, the Federation would collapse!
"Lekov, shut up!" The Zeon captain beside him was about to say something when he suddenly shoved him aside and tackled him to the ground. A round grenade landed not far from the two of them, tearing several Zeon soldiers to shreds in the explosion. "We have to take something back to the camp..." The captain glanced at Lekov, his eyes full of helplessness, "I understand what you mean, but you should also know that we have no other choice now!"
"Damn it!" Lekov thought about the situation in the camp and gritted his teeth. Ye Yun had been saying, "If I can't find you bunch of monkeys running around in the jungle, can't I at least cause trouble for your logistics, which follow a fairly fixed route?" This tactic of focusing pressure on the already fragile logistics of the Zeon army was pushing the Zeon frontline troops to the brink of collapse. What's worse, due to the special nature of the mining base, they couldn't even retreat back to their base! It was as if they were starting to enjoy the same treatment as the remnants of the Zeon army.
Say it! Thank you, Ye Yun! For letting you get used to days of hunger in advance!
Lekov gritted his teeth. They needed supplies, but if they couldn't quickly defeat the Federation forces, the charging Federation mobile suits with their 100mm machine guns would teach them a lesson without hesitation.
But he also knew that his comrade was right. Their camp was no longer just lacking in medicine and medical supplies, but also in food and ammunition. In fact, the best thing they had eaten in the last two days was a wild boar that had been startled by the gunfire and charged towards the main force of the Zeon army.
However, in order to conserve the little ammunition left in the camp, they even fired at the wild boar from behind at the very end, knocking it down.
"Great! The Federation troops are preparing to run!" At this moment, Captain Luca's face was filled with wild laughter. It was not because of anything else, but because the Federation troops had once again begun to drop smoke grenades on a large scale. This action undoubtedly meant that the Federation soldiers were planning to disengage. After all, in this jungle, before the smoke dissipated, it would be enough for the soldiers to run to a safe distance!
"Charge! Move fast!" At this moment, Lekov stopped talking and immediately shouted loudly. Both of them knew that this was the critical moment that would determine their success or failure. The two of them roared and charged out, and the Zeon soldiers behind them immediately followed.
Although such infantry charges are almost never seen in modern warfare, in this dense forest environment, the soldiers' flesh and blood are still the best weapon in combat.
"Retreat!" Unlike the Zeon army, the Federation forces did not have many conflicting thoughts. Without hesitation, they immediately ordered a retreat. After all, for the Federation forces, people were more valuable than supplies!
"Move fast!" Luca led a team to sweep the battlefield while signaling the other Zeon soldiers to immediately board the intact trucks and armored vehicles and loot as much supplies as possible: fuel, food, medicine, ammunition, and even bedding! Take everything you can!
As for why they didn't just drive the car away...
Haha, there are only a few roads in this forest that are passable by vehicles. They can ambush the Federal Army. Do you think the Federal Army will turn around and ambush them in return?
Therefore, the Zeon troops could only use the most primitive method to retrieve supplies from the convoy and carry them to their camp by manpower! They knew very well that time was running out! They had to carry out their mission as quickly as possible, otherwise…
After making a brief arrangement for the outer defenses, Luca immediately led his men to search for abandoned Federal Army vehicles on the battlefield. They were organized by infantry squads to search as quickly as possible. Some pre-prepared fuel drums were also brought over to extract fuel from the trucks' fuel tanks.
"This time we didn't suffer much loss, but we used up a lot of ammunition. Hopefully..." As he spoke, Lekov glanced back at the trucks that seemed to be in good condition, his eyes filled with a hint of fervor. Who would want to go hungry if they could have enough to eat?
“Don’t worry, this time, this convoy is going to resupply the main force of the Federation Army at the front. They’ll have all the necessary supplies. You have to trust the Federation Army commander this time. He’s a great planner. He’ll even handle attacks like ours by over-supplementing the supplies. That way, even if the convoy is attacked once or twice, the Federation Army at the front won’t lose its fighting capacity.” Luca took a deep drag on his cigarette, which he had just gotten from a fallen Federation Army officer. He shared one with Lekov and kept the rest for himself.
“Yes, I hope so…” Lekov took a deep breath. To be honest, it would be a lie to say he wasn’t envious, but what could he do? Ye Yun was the commander of the Federation forces on the other side, that was an unchangeable fact, and both Lekov and Luca knew that even if Ye Yun were the commander of the Zeon forces, their current situation would probably remain the same.
"I envy those in North America and Europe... We're just so unlucky." Luca could only complain quietly to Lekov; they dared not let the soldiers sense this sentiment too much.
Of course, they dared not let the soldiers know that they had surrendered to the guerrillas and might be living a more comfortable life than on the mainland of Side 3.
"Signal flare! Federation forces are approaching!" The search operation had barely begun when a Zeon soldier on the outer perimeter shouted at the top of his lungs, then his voice suddenly shifted to a shrill scream, "Federal Mobile Suit!"
"What!" Both Lekov and Luca felt a shiver run down their spines at the thought of being caught off guard by the Federation's sudden jester.
"Stop looting! Retreat immediately!" Luca made the decision almost without thinking! Less supplies are better than losing our lives!
In fact, he didn't even need to give the order. The moment they heard that the Federation MS were coming, all the Zeon soldiers had already started to jump off various vehicles! They picked up the supplies they had collected and started to run and scatter as fast as they could.
But it was all too late. After discovering that there was no response to their calls, the driver of the Federation GAT-01 Dagger, having located the attacked convoy, concluded that the Federation convoy had been captured by the Zeon forces! Their 100mm machine guns began to indiscriminately spray bullets onto the ground, and swathes of explosions covered the entire convoy almost instantly!
The pilot of this short sword made his stance very clear: regardless of whether you're conducting a resource search, my top priority is to destroy any resources that might fall into the Zeon hands! Even if we can't get them, you won't get a single can of food! I'll starve you bastards!
Testimonials
To be honest, it was very sudden, because I thought it was going to happen next week. The plot was still progressing slowly here, and there wasn't even a draft yet!
And then—snap! I got a notification!
Ah... Editor, this is a sneak attack!
This is my fifth book on the cat website, which means I've been an author for over ten years, so I should be more calm about it. But every time I release a book, I'm very nervous, worried that the book won't be good enough, that no one will read it, that the number of clicks and recommendations will be terrible, and that it won't make it onto the charts...
In short... it's quite a dilemma.
Each book depicts some of my midnight fantasies. This isn't the first time I've had the idea of writing another Gundam novel, but to be honest, although Gundam is a big IP, the novel itself is somewhat niche. Not to mention competing with miHoYo's entire product line in terms of popularity (it would be crushed), even compared to Ultraman or Kamen Rider series, it's far inferior.
Well... I can only say that I'm glad I haven't decided to write about anything even more obscure.
UC is the origin of Gundam, but it's not really my starting point. My starting point was Wing, so you can see that I have a bias towards Wing.
If you're seriously watching the UC anime, it's probably F91 (facepalm) and V, and the rest is added in reverse order.
My love for the One Year War story really stems from the 08th MS Team. I have to say, this anime is truly the best Gundam anime in terms of its depiction of frontline battles. The complexity is astonishing, and every time I rewatch it, I can appreciate a different feeling.
As for why it's SEED technology...
Well, aside from riding the wave of popularity, the technology in SEED (especially the early SEED) is conceptually something that can be easily replicated in the UC era without feeling out of place. If you really had some kind of mystical particle like in Gundam 00, or some strange armor technology like Iron Blood that doesn't respond to beams, then the story wouldn't be very interesting.
And so, at this point, the basic outline of the story has been formed.
I'd like to thank Fat Cat for being my daily laborer throughout the entire design process.
It's up and running today! I've released all five chapters of my saved drafts, hoping to bring everyone a little joy.
By the way, I'd like to ask for your first subscription!
thank!
