“There is one thing,” Lisette said, her brow furrowed, “how do they endure such an environment?”
She made a comparison in her mind—even the dirtiest and most chaotic place in the Cordelia Territory was better than this Port Parebia.
“It’s not about enduring, it’s about getting used to it.” Viner pointed to the sword marks and bloodstains on the wall. “Those who can’t adapt either leave or are swallowed up by this port.”
“Then let’s finish our mission and leave as soon as possible,” Listy suggested. “Shall we head straight to the port and find a ship?”
“No rush,” Viner shook his head, his gaze drifting to a dimly lit, dilapidated tavern at the end of the street. “Didn’t you want to know about Ronag Town?”
"Wasn't it supposed to be handed over to the Holy Knights for investigation?" Lisette didn't expect Vena to be so concerned.
“It was just a casual question,” Venere paused, then continued, “If you want to find out secrets that aren’t really secrets, the tavern is the best source of information.”
“I have a question,” Felix raised his hand, “Does anyone here drink?”
Wiener: "......"
“If I don’t know how to do it, I can give it a try,” Felix said eagerly.
"Why is this kid learning to drink alcohol?" Viner flicked Felix on the head. "When we go inside, you keep quiet and leave everything to me."
"Oh," Felix said, rubbing his head.
The three of them walked to the entrance of the tavern, where a rickety sign hung.
As you push open the door, a strong smell of alcohol, tobacco, and sweat hits you.
Even though it was daytime, the tavern was already packed with people.
Perhaps because they were new faces, several pairs of eyes, both open and covert, looked over as soon as the three entered.
Ignoring the stares, Viner walked past the swaying drunkards toward the bar.
"Are you a new customer? Would you like something to drink?"
The bartender, who was wiping the glass in his hand, greeted Venus as she approached.
“Three glasses of milk,” Viner said in a low but clearly audible voice.
No sooner had he finished speaking than a drunk man sitting at the bar chuckled, "Am I drunk? Milk? Kid, if you're not fully grown yet, don't try to drink like that!"
His face was full of mockery, and his words were full of contempt, which made the people around him laugh.
Wiener waited silently for the other person to finish laughing, then grabbed the man by the collar and threw him off his seat and out the door.
The drunkard didn't even have time to scream before he collapsed onto the muddy ground outside the tavern, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Vina's movements were so fast they were dazzling, and neither the drunkard nor his companion had time to react.
When the drunkard scrambled to his feet, his face was full of anger.
"Boy, how dare you ambush me!"
He shouted at them, and several of his companions drew their weapons and surrounded Vina.
The other people in the tavern, however, seemed to be used to this kind of scene. They quickly moved tables aside, made way, and then started watching the show.
"No need for that, you can all come at once," Viner said calmly.
"Insanity!"
Enraged, the drunkard didn't care whether the other man was unarmed or not, and raised his axe to chop him down.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" Several gunshots rang out in succession, piercing the air.
Each shot hit their weapons with perfect accuracy, knocking them all out of their hands.
Those of lower quality will simply break.
The noise inside the tavern came to an abrupt halt.
It wasn't because Venerer easily broke through their encirclement, but because none of them saw how Venerer made his move.
“Pay for your drinks and then get out of here,” Viner said, glancing at the drunkard in the lead.
The drunkard realized he had messed with someone, so he didn't dare say anything more. He quickly took out a few silver coins, threw them on the bar, and called his companions to slink away from the tavern.
When Viña turned around, the bartender had already quietly placed three glasses of milk on the bar.
He beckoned to Lisette and Felix, signaling them to come over, and then, as if by magic, produced a clean handkerchief from his sleeve and placed it on the seat.
Lisette sat on the handkerchief and tapped the bar twice. A soft light instantly enveloped the three glasses of milk. After confirming that the drinks had not been tampered with, she picked up a glass and took a small sip.
"taste not good."
Lisette frowned slightly, her tone carrying a hint of disdain, and calmly put down the cup.
"You're really putting me in a difficult position," the bartender said with a forced smile, secretly thinking to himself that this was probably some pampered noble lady who had come out to gain experience.
“Miss, this is probably the only standard of a place like this.” Venere said, as if offering a word of advice.
Upon hearing this, the bartender became displeased. "Our shop used to get all our drinks delivered from Ronag town, but now..."
The bartender hesitated, as if he wanted to say something but then stopped.
Wiener flicked out a gold coin, which landed on the bar with a "clink".
“I don’t like it when people say they’re only leaving half.” Viner’s gaze was fixed on the bartender, carrying an undeniable pressure.
The bartender quickly accepted the gold coins and said, "Since you asked, I'll be frank. Since the incident in Ronag Town last month, we've had to bring our drinks from much farther away. Not only are the prices several times higher, but the quality is also nowhere near as good as before."
"What happened to Ronag?" Viner asked calmly.
"Who can say for sure what happened?" The bartender shook his head. "Some say it was because they offended someone they shouldn't have, others say it was because they were attacked by a monster. Anyway, the fire burned for several days before it stopped."
"I see..." Instead of pressing further, she changed the subject: "Do you have any spare rooms?"
"Yes, how many rooms would you like, sir?"
Having witnessed Vigna's lavish spending, the bartender naturally became very attentive.
“I want two adjacent rooms.” Viner held up two fingers.
"I'll take you there right away." The bartender quickly wiped his hands and turned to lead the way.
Vena gestured for them to follow, and respectfully followed behind Lisette.
"Well..."
Felix watched the three figures turn and leave, then looked at the untouched milk on the table, scratched his head, and finally picked up both glasses and drank them down in one gulp before hurriedly chasing after them.
Chapter 527 Survivors of Ronag Town
"I wish you a pleasant stay."
The bartender accepted the tip from Vina with a broad smile on his face.
"If I need anything else, I will continue to contact you. Please do not disturb me at other times."
After giving her instructions, Wiener slammed the door shut.
The bartender didn't mind; he'd seen plenty of rude customers, and someone like Viña was even considered kind.
Not to mention how generous he was.
The bartender quickened his pace and hurried towards the bar on the first floor.
Not long after, faint footsteps could be heard again in the corridor.
A slightly thin figure stopped in front of Lisette's door.
He looked somewhat hesitant.
A clear, crisp voice suddenly rang out from behind him: "What are you waiting for?"
"Wow!"
The boy was startled and almost fell over.
He had made sure no one was around, but Felix suddenly appeared behind him.
Almost simultaneously, the door behind the boy opened, and Venere looked down at the boy with her hands in her pockets.
“Don’t be so surprised,” Viner said calmly. “You were already watching us when we were in the tavern downstairs, weren’t you?”
"If you don't want to end up like that drunkard and be thrown out by me, you'd better make your intentions clear."
“Um, my name is Doni.” The boy’s voice was slightly nervous, but when he thought about the purpose of his visit, he mustered up his courage and introduced himself. “I see this is your first time in Port Parebia, right? This place is not like other places. It can be very dangerous to be unfamiliar with the area.”
"You definitely need an experienced guide!"
Viner raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in his voice: "So you can help us find a guide?"
“Yes, I can help you find… no, I mean, I’m the experienced guide!” Donnie waved his hand and corrected himself.
“You don’t even know where we’re going, yet you dare to say such things?” Viner asked with a hint of suspicion.
“That’s not hard to guess,” Doni patted his chest. “Outsiders come to Parebia Port for one of two purposes: either to find someone or to go out to sea, and I happen to have connections in both.”
"Looking for someone" is a euphemism; in reality, it means bounty hunters have entered Parebia Port to hunt down wanted criminals.
“I do have someone I’m looking for,” Viner said, rubbing his chin.
“Tell me, and I’ll definitely find it for you!” Donnie said hurriedly.
“Her name is Jessica, and she recently arrived in Port Parebia. Her features are: early twenties, blonde hair, dark skin, and quite well-developed. If you can find her, I will believe you have the ability to be a guide,” Vena probed.
“Okay.” Donnie immediately agreed, but his body didn’t move at all; his gaze simply shifted back and forth between Vena and Felix.
"What are you waiting for?" Wiener asked knowingly.
"That... is naturally a deposit." Donnie gave a fawning smile and gestured with his hand.
Wiener smiled slightly and then tossed out a gold coin.
Before Doni could reach out to take it, Felix suddenly drew his sword, instantly splitting the gold coin in two.
The two men each caught half a gold coin.
“This is a deposit,” Vena handed Doni the half gold coin in his hand. “If you dare to play any tricks, you should know the consequences.”
Donny looked down at the half gold coin in his hand, then glanced up at the longsword gleaming coldly in Felix's hand, and couldn't help but swallow hard.
"Yes, I understand! I'll go find Jessica right now, and I promise I won't let you down!" With that, he ran off quickly.
"You really know how to cause trouble for Jessica."
After Donnie's figure disappeared around the street corner, Lisette's figure slowly appeared from the void.
“Just testing the kid a little.” Viner shrugged.
If even a little brat can track Jessica down, then he'll definitely have to laugh at her.
“He is indeed a survivor from Ronag,” Listy added.
Felix had previously mentioned that when Viner mentioned the town of Ronag at the bar, a new pair of eyes were watching them, so the group became wary.
Furthermore, using Vena's illusions, Gauntletti used "Knowledge of Legends" on Doni.
“Once Jessica gets in touch with the Holy Knights, she should tell them about the child,” Vena suggested.
Compared to these "outsiders" of unknown origin, the Knights of St. Freya were much more likely to gain the child's trust.
“Yes,” Lisette agreed, “the next step is to find a ship to set sail, right?”
"I'll go find that bartender again."
......
Viner walked to the bar, tapped the table lightly, drawing the bartender's attention. "I'm here to inquire about going to sea. Do you know any reliable boatmen?"
"Going out to sea... May I ask where you'd like to go? You see, each boatman is familiar with different routes and channels, so I need to know that to make a recommendation for you," the bartender said, wiping his glasses.
“The Kuroshio Strait,” Viner stated bluntly.
As soon as those four words were uttered, the bartender's glass trembled violently and was about to fall to the ground. Venere quickly reached out, caught the glass, and handed it back to him.
"Thank you... sir, are you really going to the Kuroshio Strait?" The bartender's voice trembled slightly.
“It’s not that I want to go, it’s that my young lady wants to see the Kuroshio Strait.” Na continued to play the role of the guard.
"Then I strongly advise you to give up this idea!"
Perhaps because of the generous tip I had given earlier, the bartender seemed exceptionally sincere.
